Josephine (Cumbo) Licata

LOWELL, Mass. - Josephine (Cumbo) Licata, 89, wife of Salvatore "Sam" Licata, with whom she would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this June, died Thursday morning at a local nursing home.

She was born in Comitini, Italy, on July 2, 1911, a daughter of the late Antonio and Gerlanda (Cannistraro) Cumbo.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Licata was employed as a seamstress for Fenway Manufacturing Co. of Lowell.

She was a communicant of St. Margaret Church, and was a member of the Mother Cabrini Society.

Besides her husband, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent S. and Gerry Licata of Lowell; a daughter Carmela "CArmy" Jones of Dracut; three sisters and a brother in law, Jane Pirini, Carmella and John O'Connell, and Mary Kozen, all of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren, Sharon Gallo, Gina Pinkham, Christina Kairouz, Cindy Teixeira and Anthony Jones; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Anthony Licata, sister of the late Stefana Preziosi and mother-in-law of the late Russell Jones.

LICATA - Josephine (Cumbo) Licata, 89, a Lowell, Mass., resident, wife of Salvatore "Sam" Licata, died Feb. 1, 2001. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home, 327 Hildreth St., Lowell, Mass. Funeral will be on Monday morning with a Mass to be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Margaret Church, Lowell, Mass. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Donations in Josephine's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140. Arrangements are by the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home, (800) 561-6183.

James I. Merritt Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - James I. Merritt Jr., 67, of 40 Bedford Way, formerly of North Hampton, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was the husband of Betty-Ann (Williams) Merritt, who died Aug. 27, 1995.

Born Sept. 28, 1933, in Malden, Mass., he was the son of the late James Irving Merritt and Flora Theresa (Forant) Merritt, and had attended Haverhill (Mass.) public schools.

A machinist by profession, he had worked for Conceptronics in Portsmouth. He was also co-proprietor of Betty's Kitchen in North Hampton, which he ran with his wife.

He was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Merrimac, Mass., and was a member of St. James Lodge, A.F.&A.M. of Hampton.

His survivors are four daughters, Candie A. Benjamin and her husband, Robert, of Merrimac, Mass.; Natalie B. Chase and her husband, Frederick, of Merrimac, Mass.; Linda L. Walker and her husband, Gregory, of Amesbury, Mass.; and Jocelyn A. Paolucci and her husband, Louis, of New Jersey; two sons, Kenneth P. Cloyd and his wife, Judith, of Groton, Mass.; and Peter J. Merritt and his wife, Cassandra, of North Hampton; one sister, Esther T. Goldthwaite and her husband, Thomas, of Raymond; two brothers, John O. of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and William D. of Wallingford, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, John A. Cloyd in 1978; a sister, Marilyn Lamie in 1968; and a brother, Richard, in 1991.

MERRITT - James I. Merritt Jr., 67, of 40 Bedford Way, Portsmouth, died Feb. 1, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pilgrim Congregational Church, Church Street, Merrimac, Mass., followed by interment in Locust Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, Mass. Masonic services conducted by St. James Lodge A.F.&A.M. will be at 3:45 Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Renovation Fund of Pilgrim Congregational Church, 27 Church St., Merrimac, MA 01860.

Lawrence V. Hampton Sr

PORTSMOUTH - Lawrence V. Hampton Sr., 72, of 123 Blue Heron Drive, died Jan. 28, 2001.

Born in New York City on Jan. 15, 1928, he was the son of the late Luther and Irene (Harvey) Hampton, and lived in Portsmouth for the past 27 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran for 22 years, serving in World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0006. He collected coins.

Family members include his wife of 46 years, Hattie (Uddyback) Hampton of Lynn, Mass.; two sons, Lawrence V. Hampton Jr., of Eliot, Maine; and Sebastian Hampton of Lorton, Va.; two daughters, Brenda Hampton of Naples, Fla.; and Sharie Hampton of Dover; five grandchildren; a brother, Martin Hampton of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial was at 1 p.m. Thursday in Boscawen State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, with full military service. Donations may be made to the Horizon Soup Kitchen, 199 Manchester St., Manchester, NH 03103.

Kathleen D. Healey

STRATHAM - Kathleen D. Healey, 94, of 28 Stratham Green, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the Exeter Health Care.

Born in New York City, Oct. 18, 1906, she was the daughter of the late James and Katherine (Doherty) McGuire.

She lived for many years in New York and worked for the New York Telephone Co. After retiring, she moved to Deerfield, Fla., where she lived for 35 years, before moving to Stratham two years ago.

She was the wife of the late James Healey.

Family members include two daughters, Eileen Fitzgerald of Stratham and Gerry Halpin of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

HEALEY - Kathleen D. Healey, 94, of 28 Stratham Green, Stratham, died Feb. 1, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Arrangements by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Harold Linwood Durgin

KITTERY, Maine - Harold Linwood Durgin, 98, of Lewis Road and formerly of 460 State Road, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in Kittery.

Born in Worcester, Mass., Oct. 20, 1902, he was the son of Frederick and Mabel (Moody) Durgin.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and from 1958 until his retirement at the age of 62 at Pease Air Force Base.

He established the well-known Christmas tree farm on the property in 1954. He served as a selectman for the town of Kittery from 1958 to 1961.

He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Sarah S. (Norton) Durgin, who died in 1993; and by two sons, Richard, who died in 1999, and Clayton, who died in 2000.

Survivors include his son, Neil and his wife, Annette Durgin, of Williston, Vt.; a daughter, Ann and her husband, David Blake, of Kittery, with whom he lived; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

DURGIN - Harold L. Durgin, 98, of Lewis Road, Kittery, Maine, and formerly of State Road, died Feb. 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in First Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Capt. Joseph Edward Rehler

PORTSMOUTH - Capt. Joseph Edward Rehler, CEC, USN retired, of 77 Wentworth St., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.

Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Oil City, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward and Mary Rehler. He was a 1930 graduate of MIT with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and obtained a master's degree in chemistry and bacteriology in 1947 from St. Bonaventure University. He also completed graduate courses at New York University, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, George Washington University, the Naval War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

He was a licensed professional engineer and published several papers on water treatment and on the construction of dry dock facilities. He was a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and the New York State Water Control Association. He was also a member of the Society of Military Engineers and was a past president of the Piscataqua post, a past president of the 800-member Washington, D.C., post, and a past first vice president of the Chicago post.

After work with the Permutit Co., he was appointed superintendent of water for the City of Olean, N.Y., during which time he was in the Naval Reserve. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served 30 years as a career officer. His tours of duty included Philadelphia, Cape May; U.S. Technical Mission in Paris, France; the Naval War College; Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C.; U.S. Fleet Activities in Japan; Washington, D.C., as head of Yards and Docks; Great Lakes, Ill., as district Public Works officer; Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as Public Works officer; the Industrial College of the Armed Forces as director of the correspondence school; and the U.S. European Command as chief of civil engineering division.

After retirement from the Navy in 1970, he served as acting superintendent of public works for Portsmouth and was subsequently resident engineer for the district of Dover.

His hobbies included antique clock collecting, golf, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by Marion Rehler, his wife of more than 70 years; his daughter, JoAnn Lamoreaux; grandchildren, Diane Wyatt and Brian Lamoreaux; sister Eileen Shannon; brothers Kenneth and Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Chuck, James and Clarence.

Following a private ceremony his ashes will be scattered at sea.

Adrienne Jean Murad

PORTSMOUTH - Adrienne Jean Murad of Portsmouth died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, after a three-month battle against cancer.

Born in Scranton, Pa., April 10, 1947, she was the daughter of Marion Mako Kincannon and Frank Mako.

She graduated from York (Maine) High School. She lived on Cape Cod and the New Hampshire Seacoast most of her life. She was employed by the Tiny Touch Doll Shop in Hampton Falls for many years and worked as a volunteer for the Stratham S.P.C.A. She worked as a chef at a number of Seacoast restaurants and was last employed by the Panera Bread Co. of Bedford.

She spent her last few months living with her loving sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Ernest Greenwood, of Ocean Road in Portsmouth. She is also survived by her son, Rene Murad of Keene; sisters, Lenore Tousignant, Robyn Boshart and Kimberley Lutz; her brother, James Kincannon Jr.; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

It was one of her last wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Portsmouth Hospice VNA, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Wendell B. O'Connor

HAMPTON - The funeral for Wendell B. O'Connor, 64, of 36 Lovering Road, North Hampton, was held Saturday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.

The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated.

Burial followed in the Center Cemetery in North Hampton, with committal services conducted by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Steve Green, Bill Shaw, Ryan O'Connor, Charles Ireland and Peter Blaisdell.

Roland J. Langlois

RYE - Roland J. Langlois, 84, formerly of Bernard Drive, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Seacoast Health Center.

He was born Aug. 16, 1916, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Ferdinand and Sophie (Landry) Langlois. He attended schools in Canada and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the Military Police Battalion.

A longtime Andover, Mass., resident, he owned and operated the former well-known Hi Spot Restaurant in North Andover with his sisters, the late Mary and Frances Langlois.

He was a longtime summer resident of Rye, moving here year-round from North Andover, Mass. He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach.

He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Jones) Langlois.

Family members include two nieces, Marie Miller of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.; and Helen Karwowski of Raleigh, N.C.; and one nephew, James Langlois of Middleton, Conn.

LANGLOIS - Roland J. Langlois, formerly of Bernard Drive, Rye, died Feb. 2, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye.

Mrs. Sophie (Geranis) Lukas

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Sophie (Geranis) Lukas, 87, widow of John N. Lukas, of 928 South St., died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1913, in Somersworth, the daughter of the late Costas and Garoufalia "Rose" (Diamond) Geranis. She was a graduate of Somersworth High School.

She and her late husband John were proprietors of the former Lukas Taxi for more than 35 years.

She was a member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Somersworth and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. She was also a member of the Daughters of Penelope, Aglaia Chapter No. 144, and the Philoptochos Society.

She was an outstanding cook and many of her recipes were used at the Lukas Another Restaurant in both Portsmouth and Hampton Falls. She was also a voracious reader.

Survivors include two sons, Constantine J. Lukas of Framingham, Mass.; and Peter Lukas of Stratham; two granddaughters, Sophia G. Lukas of Hyde Park, Mass.; and Keira Lukas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson, John Nicholas Lukas of Stratham; one great-grandson, Lysandre Lukas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

LUKAS - Mrs. Sophie (Geranis) Lukas, 87, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Feb. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with wake services at 7 p.m. by Father Angelo Pappas. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Memorial Fund, Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Pates Brook Road, Somersworth, NH 03878. Loyola M. McCarthy

LEOMINSTER, Mass. - Loyola M. (Savage) McCarthy, 78, of 14B Notre Dame St., also of Hampton Beach, died Saturday evening, Feb. 3, 2001, at University Commons Nursing Home, Worcester, Mass., after an illness.

She was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Northern Grand Isle, Vt., daughter of Willie A. and Ethel E. (Way) Savage, and came to Leominster many years ago.

She owned and operated a nursery school in Marlboro, Mass. She also worked as a nurse's aid in the New England area.

She was a member of St. Cecilia's Church in Leominster, the Come Alive after 5 Group in Hampton, and the Friday Knights of Columbus Dance Group, where she was an active member.

Her husband, Florence T. McCarthy, died in 1983. A daughter, Gloria Leger of Worcester, died in 1996. Two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond Savage, and one sister, Idella Mazzerole, also died previously.

She leaves one daughter, Constance E. York of Chiefland, Fla.; three stepsons, Paul McCarthy of Dennis, Mass., Richard McCarthy of Hudson, Mass., and David McCarthy of Manchester; one stepdaughter, Margaret McCarthy of Framingham, Mass.; one brother, Carl Savage of Florida; two sisters, Florence LeBel of Connecticut and Hazel Mason of Vermont; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

McCARTHY - Loyola M. (Savage) McCarthy, 78, of 14B Notre Dame St., Leominster, Mass., also of Hampton Beach, died Saturday evening, Feb. 3, 2001, at University Commons Nursing Home, Worcester, Mass., after an illness. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the M.A. Simard & Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., Leominster, with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St., Leominster. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Marlboro, Mass. Calling hours at the funeral home are 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5.
