Robert T. Garland

NORTH HAMPTON - Robert T. Garland, 85, formerly of North Hampton, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

He was born in Rockport, Mass., on Oct. 19, 1915, the son of the late Samuel P. and Ida (Tarr) Garland.

A longtime resident of North Hampton, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked as a self-employed carpenter.

A marksman sharpshooter, he held the title of state pistol and revolver champion in the 1960s. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and auto racing fan.

Family members include two sisters, Virginia Fowler of Hampton and Phebe R. Mason of North Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Page Garland and Samuel P. Garland Jr.

GARLAND - Robert T. Garland, 85, formerly of North Hampton, died Feb. 6, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Marjorie J. Woodworth

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held on Feb. 1, 2001, for Marjorie J. Woodworth, who died Jan. 29, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The funeral was held at Second Christian Congregational Church and officiated by the Rev. Nelson Howard III, along with her brother-in-law, the Rev. Wing.

Words of love and remembrance were spoken by her son, Adam Woodworth, and her husband, Vance Woodworth. The congregation was led in song by organist Marjorie Scully and solos were performed by Curt Bassett.

She was also fondly remembered by her brother, Bill Blankenship of Leominster, Mass.; and her sister, Jean Blinkensop of Farmington. Friends and family were provided a time of refreshment in the church fellowship hall by the ladies of the church.

Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Walter A. Doyle

RYE - Walter A. Doyle, 85, of 795 Washington Road, formerly of Perkins Road, Rye Beach, and Pompano Beach, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his home.

Born June 25, 1915, in East Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Dominick J. and Mary A. (Kearns) Doyle.

He graduated from Medford (Mass.) High School with the Class of 1933 and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked in the shipping department for First National Stores in Somerville, Mass., from 1934 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1956. He retired in 1980 from the MBTA as a bus driver with 24 years of service, and was a member of the Carman's Union Local 589 in Boston.

He was a communicant and Eucharistic minister at St. Theresa Church and a member of its men's club. He was formerly active in St. Joseph Church in Medford, Mass., and was a former member of the Corondelet Fathers Club of Framingham, Mass.

He was a summer resident of Rye Beach since 1968, moving here permanently in 1984 from Medford, Mass. He wintered in Pompano Beach, Fla., since 1985.

Family members include his wife of 58 years, Loretta M. (Burgoyne) Doyle; two daughters, Sister Mary Anne Doyle, C.S.J. of Roslindale, Mass.; and Kathleen Hannon and her husband, Thomas, of Rockland, Mass.; two grandchildren, Shaun P. Hannon and Cynthia T. Hannon; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary L. Doyle of Rockland, Mass.; and Anne Henderson of Rock Hill, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

DOYLE - Walter A. Doyle of 795 Washington Road, Rye, formerly of Perkins Road, Rye Beach, died Feb. 8, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 637 Cambridge St., Boston, MA 02135; or Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02515.

Eldred "Rick" Sayre Hart

ELIOT, Maine - Eldred "Rick" Sayre Hart, 79, of 76 Goodwin Road, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Salem Rehabilitation Center in Salem.

Born on March 3, 1921, in Antiquity, Ohio, he was a son of Earl and Fannie (Sayre) Hart. He attended school in Racine, Ohio, and graduated from Racine High School with the class of 1939.

He enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country in the Pacific theater during World War II aboard the Navy ship LCI 366, where he served as a ship's cook. He was later stationed at the military prison at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

It was while he was stationed on the Seacoast that he met his future wife of over 41 years, Ellie Rowan. They were married in 1946 and settled in Eliot raising their family.

He was employed for over 31 years at Public Service Company of New Hampshire as an electrician, retiring in 1984.

He enjoyed baseball, playing semi-pro baseball in Ohio and trying out for the Logan Indians before going to war. He fondly remembered his times spent fishing and enjoying the Ohio River, a place he dearly loved. He was an avid gardener and outdoorsman, enjoying any time spent outside, especially hunting, fishing and the like. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Eliot. He was also a member of the Rollinsford American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose lodge in Portsmouth.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie and her husband, Robert Bradbard, of Brentwood; two brothers, Ronald and Robert Hart, both of Racine, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Manuel of Racine, Ohio, and Patsy Willis of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Sara Cress of Brentwood; and a dear friend, Barbara Newhall of Merrimack.

HART - Eldred "Rick" Sayre Hart, 79, of 76 Goodwin Road, Eliot, Maine, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Salem Rehabilitation Center in Salem. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine 09304. Friends and family may call from 12 to 2 p.m. on the day of the funeral at the funeral home. Donations may be made in his memory to the Nature Conservancy-Maine Chapter, 122 Main St., P.O. Box 338, Topsham, ME 04086-0338. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904.

Roger Pollard Ramsdell

KITTERY, Maine - Roger Pollard Ramsdell, 71, of Palmer Avenue, the husband of Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Harbor Home after a long illness.

Born in York, Maine, July 2, 1929, he was the son of Clarence and Maude (Duprey) Ramsdell and graduated from York High School. In his teen-age years, he was a logger.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army for 20 years, serving in both the Vietnam War and the Korean conflict. From 1971 to 1977 he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pneumatic tool operator.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, working around the house, and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion in York and the V.F.W. in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth M. Ramsdell, who died in 1987, and Roger D. Ramsdell, who died in 1979; and by two brothers, Clarence Jr. and Kenneth George Ramsdell.

Survivors include his wife, Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell of Kittery; two sons, Larry Riley of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Steven P. Ramsdell and his wife, Ramona, of South Berwick; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Julia) Ramsdell of Eliot; a first cousin, Richard Ramsdell of Cape Neddick, with whom he grew up; four grandchildren, Cory Dean Ramsdell, Ann Marie Ramsdell, Brandon Ramsdell and Jessica Ramsdell; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Christopher P. "Chris" Girardin

GREENLAND - Christopher P. "Chris" Girardin, 18, of 4 October Drive, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Portsmouth on Jan. 24, 1983, the son of Sidney A. and Susan L. (Phillippi) Girardin of Greenland.

He attended Portsmouth High School where he was an officer for the Class of 2001. He was a member of the soccer, swim and track teams; National Honor Society; and Peer Leadership.

He was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and the Boy Scouts of America.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his maternal grandmother, Rosemary Phillippi of Swarthmore, Pa.; paternal grandparents Sidney and Arlene Girardin of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; his brother, Andrew Girardin of Greenland; and his dog, Parker.

GIRARDIN - Christopher P. "Chris" Girardin, 18, of 4 October Drive, Greenland, died Feb. 9, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Chris Girardin Memorial Fund, c/o Bernard Pelech Law Offices, P.O. Box 395, Portsmouth, NH, 03802-0395. Arrangements by J. Adeline J. Cavaness

NEWINGTON - Adeline J. Cavaness, 87, of 170 River Road, Newington, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at St. Ann Home, Dover. She was the widow of James A. Cavaness, who died in 1989.

She was born in Portsmouth, July 15, 1913, the daughter of Joseph and Angelina (Romano) Cavaretta. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1931.

She worked at Margeson's Furniture Store, Newburys, and in the supply department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of the Portsmouth Emblem Club, Sons of Italy, and AARP.

She is survived by son, Joseph A. Cavaness of Riverdale, Ga.; two daughters, Gayle J. Dorsey and her husband, Larry, of Dover, and Sharon E. Hood and her husband, Bob, of Huron, N.Y.; four sisters, Grace Cavaretta and Thomasina Kendall, both of Rye, Mildred Went of Fairfax, Va., and Olympia Bankston of Deltona, Fla.; two brothers, Henry Cavaretta and Michael Cavaretta, both of Rye; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CAVANESS - Adeline J. Cavaness, 87, of Newington, died Feb. 9, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial in Newington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Ann Home, 195 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Mary C. Makem

DOVER - Mary C. Makem, 58, of 2 Longmeadow Road, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Surgrue) Shanahan. She was a graduate of St. Mel's School in Chicago and had lived in Dover for many years.

She was the office manager for Bard Enterprises (the family business) and did all of the bookings for (Tommy) Makem and Clancy for more than 13 years.

She was active at St. Mary Academy when her children attended school there and was formerly the athletic director and a member of the School Board. She was also involved with St. Thomas Aquinas High School as a volunteer.

She was a humanitarian and always gave of her time and talents to community activities, and for 10 years ran the annual concert for the George Grenier Memorial Fund for the Dover Firefighters Association.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Tommy Makem; a daughter, Katie Makem; three sons, Shane Makem, Conor Makem and Rory Makem; and a granddaughter, Molly Dickerman, all of Dover.

MAKEM - Mary C. Makem, 58, of 2 Longmeadow Road, Dover, died Feb. 8, 2001. Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday and Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third streets, Dover. In lieu of flowers it was Mary's request that memorials in her name may be made to the Blanche Hardman Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Mary Academy, 222 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

George P. Cumm

NAPLES, Fla. - NAPLES, Fla. - George P. Cumm died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at his home in Naples.

He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Saranac, N.Y.

He was a regional manager of Northeast Goulds Plumbing in New York. He was a member of Bektash Shrine Temple, Noble Travelers of Bonita Springs, Fla., past member of the Elks Club, and the Portsmouth (N.H.) Yacht Club.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Norma "Chips" Cumm of Naples; two daughters, Melinda (John) Holland of Harvard, Mass., and Carol Ann (Brian) Nooney of New London, N.H.; two brothers, Robert Cumm of Oswego, N.Y., and Donald Burrows of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Whitney and Camden Holland.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Community Congregational Church UCC, 15300 Tamiami Trail, North Naples. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1435; or the American Diabetes Association, 1101 North Lake Destiny Road, Maitland, FL 32751.

Vinson E. "Vin" Taggersell

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services were held on Saturday for Vinson E. "Vin" Taggersell, 74, of 171 Locke Road, Rye, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. Words of remembrance were given by sons Lance Taggersell, Scott Taggersell and Brandt Taggersell, and son-in-law Robert Levine.

In attendance were friends from Portsmouth Regional Hospital Cardiac Services.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Richard Dukette

PORTSMOUTH - Richard Dukette, 54, of 592 Kearsarge Way, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a long period of failing health.

Born in Portland, Maine, April 27, 1946, he was the son of Barton and Geraldine (Bowler) Dukette.

He served in the United States Air Force and was employed as a chef in the Seacoast area.

Survivors include two sisters, Sharon Bruni of Standish, Maine, and Anita Salamone of Windsor, Conn.; three brothers, Robert Birosh of Sebago Lake, Maine, John Duncan of Portland, Maine, and Barton Rich of Westbrook, Maine; an uncle, Ed Houle, with whom he resided; and several nieces and nephews.

DUKETTE - Richard Dukette, 54, of 592 Kearsarge Way, Portsmouth, died Feb. 10, 2000. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Carolyn L. (Peaslee) Vittum

HOLY HILL, Fla. - Carolyn L. (Peaslee) Vittum, 69, widow of Carl S. Vittum, of 1000 Walker St., Holly Hill, and for many years a resident of Eliot, Maine, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at the Webster at Rye Nursing Home, Rye, N.H., after a long illness.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1931, in Center Sandwich, N.H., the daughter of the late Earle Peaslee Sr. and Louise (Carter) Peaslee.

She was formerly employed as an LPN at the Pease Air Force Base Hospital.

She was a member of Eliot Congregational Church; past president of Eliot Seniors; member of Retired Military Nurses Association; member of Sarah Orne Jewitt, Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 176 of South Berwick, Maine; and a member of the Eliot Grange.

Survivors include one son, Richard Vittum and his wife, Terry Lee, of Portsmouth, N.H.; two daughters, Susan Walker and her fiancé, Robert Perrier, of Stratham, N.H.; and Pamela Morrison and her husband, Daniel, of York, Maine; eight grandchildren, Michael Glidden of Portland, Maine; Matthew Glidden of Brookline, Mass.; Scott Morrison of York, Maine; Eric Morrison of York, Maine; Nathan Walker of Salem, Mass.; Katherine Walker of Stratham, N.H.; Rob Perrier of Stratham, N.H.; and Carolyn Vittum of Gorham, Maine; one great-grandchild, Natalie Davis of Gorham, Maine; and a brother, Earle Peaslee of Sandwich, N.H.

She was predeceased by her brother Charles Peaslee.

VITTUM - Carolyn L. (Peaslee) Vittum, 69, of 1000 Walker St., Holly Hill, Fla., and formerly of Eliot, Maine, died Feb. 10, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Eliot Congregational Church, 155 State Road. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, N.H. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.
