Emily M. Dubay

TAMPA, Fla. - Emily M. Dubay, 78, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

She was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Caribou, Maine, daughter of the late George and Rose Marie (Dube) Lovejoy. She attended local schools and later married and moved to Kittery, where she was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed arts and crafts and spent many hours sewing as well as baking and cooking. She married Albert Dubay in 1941 in Van Buren, Maine. He predeceased her in April of 1998.

In October of 1998 she moved from Kittery and resided in Tampa. She later moved in with her son, Emile J. Dubay of Tampa.

Besides her son, she is survived by her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Alice Lovejoy-Sousy and Gladys Lovejoy-Foss.

DUBAY - Emily Dubay, 78, of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, with the Rev. Real Nadeau celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. A graveside committal service and the burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Visitation hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

J. Peter Joubert

MORRISTON, Fla. - J. Peter Joubert, 54, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Shand Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born on May 16, 1946, in Amesbury, Mass., son of the late Theodore and May (Bourque) Joubert.

He was employed by Midwest Midway of Chicago, Ill., for several years.

He enjoyed working around the house and also enjoyed his only grandson, Jay.

He was the husband of Diane (Foote) Joubert for 37 years.

In addition to his wife and grandson, his family members include one son, J. Peter Joubert Jr. of Portsmouth; one daughter, Dorothea Joubert of Morriston; one brother, Ted Joubert of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

JOUBERT - J. Peter Joubert, 54, of Morriston, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday in Ocala, Fla.

Arlene J. Cain

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Arlene J. (Johnson) Cain, 84, widow of Norman R. Cain Sr., of 928 South St., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was born on Jan. 16, 1917, in Portsmouth, the daughter of Edward and Audrey (Fuce) Johnson, and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.

She was formerly employed as a telephone operator for New England Tel & Tel. She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth and a member and past matron of the Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star in Portsmouth.

Survivors include one son, Norman R. Cain Jr. of Bow; two granddaughters, Diane King of Keene and Kristin Cain of Milford, Mass.; one great-granddaughter, Caitlin Lehane of Keene; and two sisters, Esther Robbins and Lena Goodwin, both of Kittery, Maine.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Johnson.

CAIN - Mrs. Arlene J. (Johnson) Cain, 84, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Feb. 11, 2001. There will be no funeral services. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Beulah B. Hanscom

YORK, Maine - Beulah B. Hanscom, 80, formerly of Beech Ridge Road, died Sunday, Feb. 11, at Harbor Home, after a long illness.

She was born on June 25, 1920, in York, the daughter of George L., Sr., and Alice O. (McIntire) Chapman, and was a 1938 graduate of York High School.

She had worked as a bookkeeper at Parson's Lumber and for Connie Small in York for many years. She had also been a bookkeeper at York Hospital.

She was a member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and the Wells Grange. She had served as the organist at the Ogunquit Baptist Church and the Court Street Church in Portsmouth. She had also been a private music teacher in the York area for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard P. Hanscom, who died in 1996, and by her brother, Harvey Chapman, who died in 1992.

Survivors include a brother, George L. Chapman Jr., of York; one niece; and two nephews.

HANSCOM - Beulah B. Hanscom, 80, formerly of Beech Ridge Road, York, Maine, died Feb. 11 in York Harbor. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will be in the spring in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160-B, Portland, ME 04101.

Donald James Langley

AMESBURY, Mass. - Donald James Langley, 84, of 110 Market St., died early Sunday morning, Feb. 11, 2001, at Harborside Healthcare Center.

He was the husband of Margery (Sargent) Langley.

Born on Sept. 7, 1916, in Hampton Beach, he was the son of the late Edmund and Mildred A. (Holbrook) Langley and attended Hampton Academy in Hampton and Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. He became a first lieutenant after completing Officers School and was in charge of air/sea rescue in the West Indies from 1943 to 1945, at which time he received a commendation from the commanding general.

After his military service, he attended Boston University for three years in hotel administration and went on to real estate school and appraisers school, graduating in 1971 from Realtors Institute, GRI.

He owned and operated Langley Motors in Newburyport, Mass., from 1945 to 1950, then built and operated Yankee Village Motel in Hampton from 1950 to 1960. From 1960 to 1966 he managed the 100-room Meadowbrook Motor Inn in Portsmouth, and from 1959 to 1964 he owned and operated DeJay's Gifts & Casual Wear. He started in the real estate business in 1966, becoming a real estate broker and operating his own realty office until his retirement.

During his years in New Hampshire, he was chairman of the Recreation and Tourist Committee of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and was a former vice president of the New Hampshire Hotel Association, director of the New Hampshire Motel Association and director of the Portsmouth Yacht Club, where he served as chairman of its building committee.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Realtors, serving as state director in 1973; a member of the Essex North Board of Realtors, serving as its treasurer from 1968 to 1970; a member and director of the Amesbury Rotary Club, the Newburyport Rotary Club and the Portsmouth Rotary Club; a director of the Amesbury Co-operative Bank; a director, and fund chairman from 1971 to 1973, of the Amesbury YMCA; a member of the Amesbury Industrial Foundation, the Amesbury Planning Board and the Amesbury Historical Commission; and a director of the Bartlett Museum and the Bartlett Cemetery.

Politically, he had been Republican Finance Chairman of Amesbury for eight years as well as Republican Town Chairman for eight years.

Additionally, he was a member of Warren Lodge, A.F.&A.M., of Amesbury; Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; and the Massachusetts Consistory in Boston.

He co-authored a book with Holly J. Blake in March 1999 titled "Tahiti Bound," which depicts his voyage from Gloucester to Tahiti from 1938 to 1939.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Donald J. Langley Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla., Glen F. Langley of Freeport, Maine, and Christian T. Wyman of Amesbury; seven grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth W. Langley of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Meredith Ann Wyman, who died in 1966; his brother, Edmund Langley; and his sister, Irene Teague.

LANGLEY - Donald J. Langley, 84, of Amesbury, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the First Congregational Church of Hampton, Winnicunnett Road, Hampton, followed by interment in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. Warren Lodge will conduct Masonic services at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Kindly omit flowers. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Eldred "Rick" Sayre Hart

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, for Eldred "Rick" Sayre Hart of Eliot, who died Feb. 8, 2001, in Salem, N.H. The service was held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery officiating.

A farewell service was presented by the Loyal Order of Moose Portsmouth Lodge prior to the service. Words of love and a reading were presented by Mr. Hart's granddaughter, Sara Cress. Burial will take place in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot in the spring.

Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine.

Raymond J. Desjardins

PORTSMOUTH - Raymond J. Desjardins, 36, of 199 McDonough St., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in North Hampton.

Born in Portsmouth on June 27, 1964, he was the son of Patricia (Locke) Desjardins and the late Roland Desjardins.

He attended Portsmouth schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School, class of 1982.

He loved and enjoyed outdoor activities: hiking, snowmobiling, motorcross, and was a very good pool player, even with only one arm. He was known around the Seacoast as the one-arm-bandit pool player. He lost his left arm in a very serious motorcycle accident in 1984.

He loved detailing automobiles and still continued doing this after the loss of his arm, and was considered one of the best at it. He also loved spending time with his two nieces, and gave them so much love and laughter.

Besides his mother, survivors include his stepfather, Stanley Blanchard, of Portsmouth; two sisters, Rolinda Desjardins, of Portsmouth, and Tonya Neihart and her husband, Jon, of Nottingham; two nieces, Samantha Desjardins and Alexa Neihart; his maternal grandfather, Leslie Locke, of Portsmouth; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

DESJARDINS - Raymond J. Desjardins, 36, of 199 McDonough St., Portsmouth, died Feb. 11, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 845 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

M. Rose Richard

EXETER - M. Rose Richard, 82, of 91 Epping Road, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Born April 5, 1919, in Epping, she was the daughter of the late Rose Currier Donovan.

She attended schools in Epping and had lived in Exeter for the past 50 years. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and enjoyed her family and provided day care for her family.

She was the wife of the late Gerard P. Richard, who died in 1996.

Family members include one son, Robert Richard of Stratham; three daughters, Patricia Brewitt of Wolfeboro, Marianne Gage of Rayne, La., and Teresa Brake of Eliot, Maine; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

RICHARD - M. Rose Richard, 82, of 91 Epping Road, Exeter, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Richard S. O'Connor

PORTSMOUTH - Richard S. O'Connor, 92, of 106 Osprey Drive, died Feb. 10, 2001, at his home, after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1908, in Pittsburgh, Penn., he was the son of the late Daniel and Julia (Trent) O'Connor.

Family members include seven daughters, Julia Hesselund-Jensen of New York City, Elizabeth McBreen of Belport Village, N.Y., Joan Newton of Washington, D.C., Susan Lewis of Portsmouth, Kathleen Smith of Arlington, Va., Margaret Mangan of Thames-Ditton, England, and Mary Alice Cooper of New York City; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary O'Connor of Pittsburgh.

Florence May Hughes

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Florence May Hughes, 85, died Feb. 8, 2001. She was born May 11, 1915, in Portsmouth.

After completing her education in Portsmouth, she went on to teach elementary school at Brixham School in York, Maine. She and her husband and two daughters moved to Vallejo, Calif., in 1956, where she volunteered for the local hospital guild. She and her husband retired to Hampton in 1979, where she continued her commitment to volunteer work at Exeter Hospital. She and her husband relocated to Auburn, Calif., in 1990, where her immediate family was privileged and delighted to share her company.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Donald Hughes; as well as daughters Donna Stowell and Jane Hughes; her sister, Pauline Tucker of Portsmouth; brothers John and Earl Rowe of Portsmouth; grandchildren Charles Stowell and Lisa Zeng; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

A lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, she will be remembered for her sweet disposition, quick wit and endless love and affection.

HUGHES - Florence May Hughes, 85, of Auburn, Calif., died Feb. 8, 2001, in Roseville, Calif. A celebration of her life will be held this spring in Portsmouth, preceding her burial at Harmony Grove Cemetery.

Grace Rita Pevear

OVIEDO, Fla. - Grace Rita Pevear, 87, formerly of Hampton, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass., on April 29, 1913, and attended schools there.

She was a former business owner in New Hampshire. With her first husband, the late Everett Cole, they owned and operated the former Seagate Motel at Hampton Beach. She also ran a coffee shop in Exeter and was involved in caring for many foster children.

She moved to Oviedo in 1999 after having spent many winters in Florida.

She was a former communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, and was a member and past president of the Ladies Union of the First Congregational Church of Hampton.

Her second husband, Eben R. Pevear, who was a lifelong resident of Hampton, died in 1989.

Family members include two sons, Chester J. Cole of Winter Park, Fla., and Everett N. Cole of Hudson, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Hugelman of Gilmanton, N.H.

PEVEAR - Grace R. Pevear, 87, of Oviedo, Fla., formerly of Hampton, died Feb. 8, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
