Charles W. Call

STAFFORD, Va. - Charles W. Call, 79, formerly of Exeter, and Woodbridge, Va., died Feb. 8, 2001, at Brooke Nursing Center, Stafford, Va., after a long illness.

Born Nov. 23, 1921, in Exeter, he was the son of Arthur J., Sr., and Mabel (Lane) Call.

He was a graduate of Exeter High School, class of 1938. He also graduated from McIntosh Business School in Dover, class of 1941.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines, and was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star.

He retired after more than 30 years with the Defense Department, at the Pentagon.

An avid sports enthusiast, he played on the Exeter Collegians basketball team. He also played on various baseball and softball teams in the Exeter area.

While living in Woodbridge he coached Little League baseball and basketball.

Family members include two sons, Alan Call of Aylett, Va., and Stephen Call of Stafford, Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Joe (Pamela) Hunt of Hanover, Va.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Frank (Edith) Whelden of Osterville, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur J. Call Jr. and Dr. Russell J. Call; and three sisters, Ethel Metcalfe, Nellie Young and Dorothy Draper.

CALL - Charles W. Call, 79, of Stafford, Va., died Feb. 8, 2001. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Feb. 17 in the downstairs vestry of the First Baptist Church in Exeter. The Rev. Moynihan will officiate. Burial will take place in Quantico Military Cemetery, Quantico, Va., at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be sent to First Baptist Church, 2 Spring St., Exeter, NH 03833. Assistance to the family was provided by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Winthrop Pickering Hoyt Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Winthrop Pickering Hoyt Jr., husband of Dorothy (Vallincour) Hoyt, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a short illness.

He was the son of Winthrop P. and Lucy (Akerman) Hoyt and was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Portsmouth, as the Portsmouth Memorial Bridge was being christened. He spent his childhood on the Hoyt farm in Greenland and attended the Greenland School. He went to Portsmouth High, graduating in the class of 1941, and played several sports including football and baseball. He enlisted for active service immediately after graduation. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II, serving in the European theater. He built air strips in Bishop Storford, England, and also had duty in Nancy, France.

Following his return to New Hampshire from World War II, he worked for several building contractors as a carpenter and for Simplex. He coached the Lions baseball team in the early '50s and played hockey in the Rye Outdoor Hockey League. He used his last paycheck from the service to buy the baseball glove and hockey skates he used throughout his life with pride.

He married Dorothy Vallincour on Sept. 26, 1954, and built the family home on Spinney Road. He worked for Fred J. Brown Construction Company of Greenland for many years and finished his work career with 15 years' service at the University of New Hampshire in the carpenters shop, retiring in 1990. He spent many happy hours at the university's sports events, especially at the hockey arena, where he held season tickets, from the creation of the original Snively Arena and later at the Whittemore Center. He enjoyed helping his daughters' many friends and was a devoted father and grandfather.

He served as chaplain of the Greenland Veterans Club, helping to start their scholarship program, and to prepare food baskets. He was an avid ice fisherman on Great Bay. He was an avid and prolific gardener, who helped with community gardening projects throughout the Seacoast. He enjoyed many retirement trips to Florida for baseball spring training in the springtime.

He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy, of 46 years; two daughters, Rae Ann Hoyt Chrane and her husband, Scott, of Rochester, and Lianne Hoyt Deal and her husband, Charles, of Medford, Mass.; two granddaughters, Sarah Chrane and Rachel Deal; a brother, Kenard Palfrey of Rye; a sister, Priscilla McLane of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Palfrey of Portsmouth; as well as many nieces, nephews, and warm friends.

HOYT - Winthrop Pickering Hoyt Jr., of Portsmouth, died Feb. 12, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Chapel, with Greenland veterans services at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Greenland Veterans Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 13, Greenland, NH 03840, or to the Salvation Army, Middle Street, P.O. Box 6534, Portsmouth, NH 03802-6534.

Rebecca Kramer Frost

ELIOT, Maine - Rebecca Kramer Frost, 82, of Goodwin Road, Eliot, died Feb. 11, 2001, at her home in Eliot.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1918, in Auburn Schukill, Penn. She served in the 8th Army Air Force in Cambridge, England, from 1942 to 1945.

After the war she moved to Kittery Point and married her husband, Joseph W. Frost. She was an ardent gardener.

She is survived by her husband; her daughters, Elizabeth and Susan; and her brothers and sisters in Pennsylvania.

The family would like to especially thank the Hospice of York program and the visiting nurse program of York along with her physicians, Dr. Stephen Jendzejec, Dr. Robert Horowicz and Dr. Sheila Martin.

FROST - Rebecca K. Frost, 82, of Goodwin Road, Eliot, died Feb. 11, 2001, at her home. Services will be private. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 09304.

Margaret T. Hanscom

PORTSMOUTH - Margaret T. (Thompson) Hanscom, 95, widow of Arthur H. Hanscom Sr., of 928 South St., died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.

She was born on Oct. 22, 1905, in Portsmouth, daughter of the late John E. and Mary (Chandler) Thompson.

She was a member of the Court-Central Baptist Church for 30 years and a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church for 26 years. She was also a member of the former Fannie A. Gardner Rebecca Lodge #82 and the former Pocahontas.

During World War II, she volunteered her services in knitting headgear for servicemen overseas.

Survivors include a son, Arthur H. Hanscom of Portsmouth; a daughter, Mary F. Mayhew of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Ricker of Brentwood; nine nieces; and one nephew.

Phyllis D. Cottrell

EXETER - Phyllis D. Cottrell, 77, of 187B Front St., died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at her home.

A lifelong resident of Exeter, she was born on Feb. 15, 1923, the daughter of the late Harold S. and Dera (Babb) Smith. She was a graduate of the Robinson Female Seminary.

A homemaker, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, Exeter, and a member of the VFW #2181 of the Exeter Ladies Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was the wife of Warren E. Cottrell for 60 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Robert W. Cottrell of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Linda L. MacNeill of Brentwood and Cynthia A. McGinnis of Sanford, Fla.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert F. Smith of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

COTTRELL - Phyllis D. Cottrell, of 187B Front St., Exeter, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Baptist Church, 2 Spring St., Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. The family requests no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 2 Spring St., Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Ruth M. Eldridge

KITTERY, Maine - Ruth M. (Shaw) Eldridge, 75, of 137 Martin Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at York Hospital.

She was born in York, Maine, on May 31, 1925, the daughter of Leslie and Florence (McKay) Shaw, and attended York schools.

She had worked as a nurse's aide at area nursing homes for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Earl Eldridge, who died in 1986. She was also predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Ready, and by her granddaughter, Angela R. (Merosola) Wakefield, who died in March 2000.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Merosola, of Kittery; three sons, Gerald Eldridge and his wife, Windy, of Quincy, Mass., George Eldridge, of Richmond, Va., and Ronald Eldridge, of Eliot; one brother, Eugene Shaw and his wife, Alrose, of South Haven, Mich.; eight grandchildren, James M. Eldridge, Christine Eldridge, Joseph Merosola Jr., Kristina Merosola, Jeffrey Eldridge, Jamie Eldridge, Peter Tufts and Michael Tufts; and six great-grandchildren.

ELDRIDGE - Ruth M. Eldridge, 75, of 137 Martin Road, Kittery, Maine, widow of Earl Eldridge, died Feb. 13, 2001, in York, Maine. A private service will be held. Arrangements are by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.

Sgt. Lloyd G. Wallett

PORTSMOUTH - Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Lloyd G. Wallett, 84, of 209 Grant Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the VA Hospital in Manchester.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, on Aug. 14, 1916, he was the son of Edward and Edna (Lusher) Wallett and had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1961.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in China, New Guinea, the western Pacific, the southern Philippines, Luzon, the Ryukyus and the air offensive on Japan. He was awarded several decorations and citations, including the Presidential Unit Citation, for his service in World War II. After the war he reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired in 1961 as a master sergeant.

He was employed as the manager of the Pease Bowling Center and retired from the Civil Service after 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #4.

He was an avid bowler, sportsman, baseball player and sports card and stamp collector.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Rosie (Lepizzi) Wallett; a daughter, Susan Diaz of Portsmouth; a son, Michael Wallett of the U.S. Air Force in Corpus Christi, Texas; four grandchildren, D.J. Lopata, Natene Wallett, Alex Wallett and Ammarie Wallett; three sisters, Bonnie Curtis of Hercules, Calif., Florence Bohnert of Central Point, Ore., and Elizabeth Opsahe of Bellaire, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

WALLETT - Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Lloyd G. Wallett, 84, of 209 Grant Ave., Portsmouth, died Feb. 13, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday morning at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evening. Burial will be in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Helen P. Young

YORK, Maine - Helen P. Young, 91, widow of Neil W.W. Young, and formerly of Rogers Road, Kittery, and York St., York, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at her residence in the York Harbor Health Care Center at Sentry Hill.

Born July 27, 1909, in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of John Cameron and Gertrude (Putnam) Hardie.

She attended the public schools of Brockton, Mass. She received a nursing diploma from the Faulkner School of Nursing in Boston.

Upon retirement from the nursing profession, she was active in volunteer services. She was chairman of the volunteers for the New Bedford, Mass., chapter of the American Red Cross and was also coordinator of the southeastern Massachusetts American Red Cross activities at the VA Hospital in Brockton.

Upon her husband's retirement and their move to York, they were volunteers in the medical records department at York Hospital for 10 years. She was also a member of the York Hospital Auxiliary.

The Youngs celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 24, 2000. Her husband died in August of 2000. She was also predeceased by a son, David P. Young, who died in infancy in 1942, and by a brother, Donald Cameron Hardie.

She is survived by a nephew, Donald Cameron Hardie Jr., of Royal Oak, Mich.

YOUNG - Helen P. Young, formerly of York Street, York, Maine, and Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, died Feb. 13, 2001, at Sentry Hill in York Harbor. Graveside services will be held in the spring in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Public Library, 172 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Eva V. Carroll

PORTSMOUTH - Eva V. (Sisman) Carroll, widow of Robert M. Carroll, of 31 Wilson Road, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.

She was born in Exeter, daughter of Peter and Felicia (Boris) Sisman.

She was a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

She was retired from the shoe industry and had also worked at Rich's Dept. Store, formerly in Portsmouth.

She loved gardening and cooking and was a friend to many people.

Survivors include her sisters, Joan Pike and her husband, John, of Portsmouth, and Mary Esselstyn, of Redwood City, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Leigh Baysden, of Fredericksburg, Va.; a step-grandson, Robert Baysden, of Fredericksburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

CARROLL - Eva V. (Sisman) Carroll, of 31 Wilson Road, Portsmouth, died Feb. 13, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Children's Hospital, Boston Unit, c/o Memorial Gift Coordinator, Bektash Shriners, P.O. Box 7252, Concord, NH 03301-7252. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Michael Mazzin

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Michael Mazzin, 82, for many years a resident of Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in Port Charlotte, Fla., after a long illness.

Born in Russia on Feb. 13, 1919, he immigrated to the U.S. and worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. He owned and operated a commercial sign company in Portsmouth before moving to Port Charlotte, Fla.

During World War II he served in the Russian Army and fought against the Nazis.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Laura (Bardaczuk) Mazzin of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one son, Al Mazzin and his wife, Diane, of Chelsea, Mass.; four grandchildren; five stepchildren, including Peter Pawula of Portsmouth, Larissa (Pawula) Mulkern and her husband, Michael, of Portsmouth, Stephanie (Koss) Dubowyj and her husband, Andrew, of Londonderry, Natalie (Pawula) Carr and her husband, James, of Pacifica, Calif., and Anna (Kos) Joyal and her husband, Chris, of Carmichael, Calif.

MAZZIN - Michael Mazzin, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and for many years a resident of Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in Port Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Russian Orthodox Church of Epiphany, 963 South St., Roslindale, Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass.

Carolyn L. Vittum

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Carolyn L. (Peaslee) Vittum, 69, of 1000 Walker St., Holly Hill, Fla., and formerly of Eliot, Maine, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, on Tuesday, with services at Eliot Congregational Church in Eliot. The Rev. David Avery, pastor, officiated. Organist was Emily Haggerty.

In attendance were members of the church; representatives from Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter #176, Order of Eastern Star, of South Berwick, Maine; and representatives from the Eliot Grange.

Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, in the spring.

Order of Eastern Star services were held at the chapel Monday evening by Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter #176, including Worthy Matron, Mary Zimmerman PM; Worthy Patron, Lyle L. Littlefield; Chaplain, Orville DeRochemont; Adah, Priscilla DeRochemont PM; Ruth, Janice Knowles PM; Esther, Gwen Mason PM; Martha, Robyn Faulkner PM; Electra, Beatrice Rowland.
