M. Rose Richard

EXETER - The funeral for M. Rose Richard of 91 Epping Road was held Wednesday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, was the principal celebrant. The Rev. Mark Dollard was the concelebrant. Organist was Denise Kelly, and Jennifer Gaines was the soloist. Acolytes were Joseph Latour and Al Markey. The readings were by Philip Gage and Jennifer Gage. Words of remembrance were offered by Philip Gage. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery, with the rite of committal by the Rev. Drouin. Pallbearers were Tony Paganelli, Mike Fernandes, Mark Gruner and Philip Gage.

Catherine M. Guilfoil

GROTON, Conn. - Catherine "Kay" M. Guilfoil of 390 Long Hill Road, died Tuesday afternoon at her residence.

She was born in Dover, N.H., the daughter of Charles and Gladys Hendrickson McCoole. She married Kenneth V. Guilfoil on Aug. 26, 1950, in Portsmouth, N.H.

For many years she was the office manager of MacLaughlin Accounting in New London, Conn. She then went into partnership with her husband at Associate Planning Services in Groton.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Groton and the National Association of Tax Professionals.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Raymond McCoole of Chester, N.H., and John O'Brien of Kittery, Maine; two sisters, Shirley Mattingly of Portsmouth, N.H., and Marilyn Bunkley of Brunswick, Ga.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Michael V. Guilfoil, and a sister, Patricia McCoole.

GUILFOIL - Catherine "Kay" M. Guilfoil of Groton, Conn., died on Feb. 13, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich, Conn. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Donations in her memory may be directed to St. Bernard's High School, 1593 New London Turnpike, Uncasville, CT 06382.

Linda M. Ketchum

HAMPTON - Linda M. (Beyea) Ketchum, 55, of Hampton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in her home after a two-year struggle with ovarian cancer.

She was born June 2, 1945, in Winchester, Mass., the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Edith T. (Baril) Beyea and lived in Hampton for 43 years.

She was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School and was an active member of her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved to sew, swim, sing and walk on the beach. She was the beacon of sunshine to her family and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years and counting, Wayne C. "Sam" Ketchum of Hampton; three daughters, Michele E. Noble of Shaftsbury, Vt., Renee C. Wilkinson of Alton, and Linda M. Ketchum II of Salt Lake City, Utah; five grandchildren; four sisters, Marsha Skoglund of Hampton, Joyce Binnette of Hampton, Sandra Dupuis of North Hampton and Ellen Law of Boca Raton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

KETCHUM - Linda M. Ketchum of Hampton died Feb. 13, 2001. Services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Route 88, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Virginia Fowle Aldrich

RYE - Virginia Fowle Aldrich, 74, of Webster at Rye Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, after a long illness.

She was the beloved wife of Harold M. Aldrich, who died in 1987.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., on Jan. 29, 1927, the daughter of the late Arthur and Gladys (Teague) Fowle. She previously lived in Newbury and Amesbury, Mass., and Northwood, N.H.

A graduate of the Newburyport High School, Class of 1944, Jinny worked most of her life in antiques and decorating, after an early, successful career in dance instruction. Jinny was also an accomplished painter, creating many stunning oil paintings of her New England life.

She loved playing the piano with her daughters and grandchildren, and she adored cats. She enjoyed her summer home on Long Island, Maine, with many friends and family for more than 30 years. Many people will remember her from her shop, Country Lane Antiques, in Northwood. She and her husband were active members of St. Paul's Church in Newburyport, Mass., for many years.

She is survived by three children, Brian Aldrich and his wife, Valerie, of Alameda, Calif., Melissa Aldrich of Lewes, Del., and Sarah Shattuck and her husband, Tracy, of Portsmouth; three brothers, Barry Fowle of Stafford Springs, Va., Ronald Fowle of Stockton Springs, Maine, and Alan Fowle of Belmont; and four grandchildren, Ashley and Eric Aldrich of Alameda, Calif., and Kaitlynn and Maeve Shattuck of Portsmouth.

ALDRICH - Virginia Fowle Aldrich, 74, of Webster at Rye nursing Home, Rye, died Feb. 13, 2001. Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport, Mass. Donations may be made in her memory to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Stanley Drown

KENSINGTON - Stanley Drown, 77, of Kensington, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Weymouth, Mass., May 17, 1923, the son of Edward and Frances May (Wright) Drown. He was raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and resided several years in Braintree, Mass., before moving here 15 years ago.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, and was a member of the National Organization of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was employed by the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston for 40 years. He began as a stock boy out of high school and retired as office manager in 1980.

He enjoyed playing the piano. He played in the restaurant of the former Lucas's Greenhouse in Hampton Falls in 1989 and 1990.

He was predeceased by his two sisters, Betty Drown and Ruth Markham.

Family members include his wife, Edna A. Drown of Kensington; his brother-in-law, Bud Markham of Newnan, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

DROWN - Stanley E. Drown of Kensington died Feb. 13, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. If desired, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Walter A. Doyle

HAMPTON - The funeral for Walter A. Doyle, 85, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, formerly of Perkins Road, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, and the Rev. Robert McMillan S.J., from the Archdiocesan Chancery were the celebrants.

Salvatore DiVincenzo was altar server. Judith Kish was organist and pianist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. The pall was placed on the casket by Mr. Doyle's family. His daughter Kathleen T. Hannon and her husband, Thomas, offered the readings. His daughter Sister Mary Anne Doyle, C.S.J., offered the Responsorial Psalm. The gifts were presented to the altar by grandchildren Shaun P. Hannon and Cynthia T. Hannon, who also offered words of remembrance.

Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass., with the Rite of Committal conducted by the Rev. James Sheehan of the Campion Center, Weston, Mass. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Doyle's widow, Loretta M. (Burgoyne) Doyle.

Pallbearers were Stephen Quigley, James Ferraiolio, Paul Burgoyne and Michael Quigley.

Joseph A. Shaw Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Joseph A. Shaw Sr., 71, husband of Lizzie M. (Wilson) Shaw, of 38 Coakley Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on June 17, 1929, a son of Alfred and Ambrosine Shaw.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring as a technical sergeant after 23 years of service.

He served on the Portsmouth Police Auxiliary and was formerly employed as a manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Portsmouth and as a security guard at Portsmouth High School and the Hanover parking garage. He was also employed at the Seabrook nuclear power plant.

He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth; a member and past commander of Frank E. Booma Post #6, American Legion; and a member and past chaplain of Emerson Hovey Post #168, VFW.

Besides his wife of 47 years, survivors include one daughter, Ollegra Sterling of Portsmouth; one son, Joseph A. Shaw Jr. of Barrington; two grandchildren, Monique and Veronica Sterling, both of Portsmouth; three brothers, Frank, Cecil and Kenneth Shaw, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Jewel Jackson of New York, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Clarence T. Shaw.

SHAW - Joseph A. Shaw Sr., 71, of 38 Coakley Road, Portsmouth, died Feb. 13, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with American Legion services at 5:45 p.m. by Frank E. Booma Post #6 and VFW services at 6 p.m. by Emerson Hovey Post #168. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Emily Dubay

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Emily Dubay who died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Tampa, Fla., were held Wednesday morning at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau celebrated the Mass of Christian burial. Nancy Jones was the organist. Music was also provided by the St. Raphael's church choir. Philip Sousa was the acolyte.

A graveside committal service was held at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Nadeau reciting committal prayers. Burial followed in the family lot. Bearers were Craig Dubay, Robert Strout, Lewis Johnson and John Stadig.

The Rev. Nadeau offered prayers during the Catholic vigil service on Tuesday evening at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery. A reception for a time of sharing was held at the home of Craig Dubay in Portsmouth, N.H., after the funeral.

BERKOWITZ - Logan Paige Berkowitz, born Dec. 31, 2000, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001. She was the beloved daughter of Jeff and Gwenth Berkowitz of Hampton Falls, N.H. The Logan Paige Foundation has been established to raise awareness and help those with myotonic dystrophy, P.O. Box 750017, Arlington Heights, MA 02475-0017; www.loganpaige.org is currently being developed. Donations in her memory would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Joyce Funeral Home, Waltham, Mass.

Mr. Raymond J. Desjardins

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Raymond J. Desjardins, 36, of 199 McDonough St., Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Thursday, with services at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Monsignor Lawrence Burns was celebrant. Words of remembrance were given by Tim Locke and Samantha Desjardins. Soloist was Patricia Rose. Organist was Maureen Sheehan.

In attendance were former classmates from Portsmouth High School.

Bearers were Troy Locke, Ken Cash, Mike Locke, Greg Locke, Maurice Blanchard and Steve Rolling.

Wake services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Wednesday evening, by Monsignor Burns.

Mrs. Helen C. Slanetz

KEENE - Mrs. Helen C. Slanetz, a longtime resident of Durham, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Keene.

The daughter of George and Catherine Carruth Colby, she was born in Clinton, Mass., on May 24, 1908. She received her education in schools in Clinton and Enfield, Conn., and New Britain Teachers College.

She was an active member of the Durham Community Church where she taught Sunday school and accompanied the Junior Choir. She was a past president of the Women's Guild and served on many church committees.

She was a founding member of the Durham Youth Association. She was active in the state Republican Party, serving as chairman of the Durham Republican Committee and treasurer of the Strafford County Republican Committee. She was a member of the State Republican Committee for more than 40 years and also served in two constitutional conventions and was the first woman assistant moderator for Durham.

She was well known in Durham for her piano playing. She studied both violin and piano and played popular music by ear. She was a member of a jazz band and organized "Helen's Friends," a group of singers who, for many years, sang regularly at area nursing homes.

She was the widow of Dr. Lawrence W. Slanetz, an emeritus professor and dean at the University of New Hampshire, who died in 1986.

She is survived by a son, L. William Slanetz of Keene; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Caryl) F. Carle of Derry; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Robert, predeceased her in 1985.

SLANETZ - Mrs. Helen C. Slanetz, a longtime resident of Durham, died Feb. 13, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at the Durham Community Church. Burial will be in the Durham Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make memorials in her name to the Durham Community Church, Main Street, Durham, NH 03824.

George V. Dietz

KINGSTON - George V. Dietz, 69, of MacMillan Road, died suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Nov. 1, 1931, in Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late George and Marian (Kreiselmier) Dietz.

He had resided in Kingston since 1960. For most of his working life, he was a self-employed consultant and drafting engineer in the New England area.

He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was an active member of the Kingston Veterans Club.

In his spare time, he had an avid interest in designing, building and racing sprint cars with his grandson.

He was predeceased by his wife, Philomena F. Dietz, who died June 1, 2000.

He is survived by a son, Timothy M. Dietz of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Barbara I. Boyle of Brookline, Mari-Jo Yanus of Hampstead, Pamela A. Dietz of Manchester, and Beth F. Tuttle of Rye; four grandsons, Patrick M. Boyle, Matthew R. Yanus, Tyler Dietz and John M. Tuttle.

DIETZ - George V. Dietz, 69, of MacMillan Road, Kingston, died Feb. 14, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Kingston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Kingston Veterans Club, Veterans Memorial Building Fund, Kingston, NH 03848.

Mrs. Eva V. (Sisman) Carroll

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Eva V. (Sisman) Carroll of 31 Wilson Road, Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Friday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. James Church. Father Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, was celebrant. Lector was Thomas Ahearn. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Jane Milette, Theresa Hickey and Joanne Greene. Organist was Jean Goss and Janet Green was vocalist. Presentation of the gifts was by Susan Vanasse and Ketti Davis Vanasse.

In attendance were communicants of the church.

Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Bearers were Jody McGowen, William McGowen, Augustine Zamarchi, John Allard, Daniel Vanasse and Michael Perry.
