Dr. Charles R. Buffler

MARLBOROUGH - Dr. Charles R. Buffler, 66, an engineer and scientist who performed highly influential work in the field of microwave technology, died Feb. 27, 2001. Vice president with Microwave Research Center since 1994, he had been performing consulting services to the industrial, scientific and medical microwave communities. He had been struggling with cancer for the last two years.

Born April 8, 1934, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., he and his parents moved to Austin, Texas, in 1941 where his father became a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas. Fascinated by science and mathematics at an early age, he took all such courses offered before graduating from Austin High School in 1951. He then pursued his scientific interests by taking his undergraduate training in physics at the University of Texas, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1955, with a bachelor of science degree with high honors.

Continuing with his education, he received a scholarship to Harvard University, where he studied engineering and applied physics. In 1956, he married his college sweetheart, Nancy Walker, also a University of Texas graduate.

He was awarded a Ph.D. in engineering and physics from Harvard in 1960. He was a Fellow of the International Microwave Power Institute, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma, and Sigma Xi societies.

In 1959, he began work for Varian Associates as a research scientist in Palo Alto, Calif., and subsequently in Boston, remaining with Varian until 1966. Buffler founded, and was president of Microwave Magnetics Inc. in 1968. Microwave Magnetics developed highly specialized microwave devices, microwave instrumentation and systems, and in a broad range of scientific studies.

In 1973 he became associate director of Advance Engineering Resources at Leeds & Northrup Co., where he was involved in a wide variety of engineering developments. In 1975, he joined Litton Microwave Cooking Products, in Minneapolis, where he became director of research and development. In 1980 he received the Litton Industries Advanced Technology Award for his outstanding patentable contributions. He remained with Litton until 1985.

Throughout his career, he had been involved in an extremely broad spectrum of technologies and research and development activities, stretching from the arcane studies into the physical bases for "dowsing," to studies into the whole-body heating of humans with microwaves. Buffler was also involved in numerous practical, patentable developments of various microwave heating and cooking devices.

He published 35 papers in various scientific and technical journals, authored a text book, "Microwave Cooking and Processing; Engineering Fundamentals for the Food Scientist," and was awarded two patents. His most technically outstanding and personally satisfying work dealt with investigations into certain characteristics of ferromagnetic materials. This work led to a more complete understanding of ferrite devices. Such devices have since been incorporated into virtually every radar and communication system in the world.

Buffler had been an active participant in civic activities, having been a long-standing member of the Marlborough Conservation Commission, most recently as secretary. In 1999, he was elected to a term on the Marlborough School Board, serving until his death. He loved opera, gardening, nature walks, gourmet food, fine wine and good dictionaries. He also enjoyed raising sheep and discussing current events and world issues.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his mother, Esther; his brother, Richard; and three children, Susan, Robert and his daughter, Allison; and John and his wife, Ilse, and their children Jacqueline and Dylan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either Marl-Harris Ambulance, Sandy LaPlante, Box 671, Marlborough, NH 03455; or to The Monadnock Conservancy, P.O. Box 337, Keene, NH 03431.
