Harry Learnard

HOOKSETT - Harry Learnard, 46, of Hooksett, died March 5, 2001, at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, after a prolonged illness.

Born in Portsmouth on June 5, 1954, he was the son of Harry B. and Paulene (Harriman) Learnard.

He attended Manchester schools, the New Hampshire Technical College, Claremont, and New England College.

For a number of years he owned and operated his own business in Manchester, but most recently was employed by Alarmax Distributors Inc.

He was an avid car enthusiast and spent many hours restoring 1960s high-performance automobiles. He was also a strong supporter of the New Hampshire Kart Association.

Family members include his wife, Debra (Gariepy) Learnard, and two sons, Christopher and Kevin, all of Hooksett; two sisters, Lorene Stevens/Kennedy (predeceased); Patricia Ledoux of Raleigh, N.C.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

LEARNARD - Harry Learnard, 46, of Hooksett, died March 5, 2001. Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a brief memorial service at the Cate and Johnson Funeral Home, 573 Pine St., Manchester. In lieu of flowers, family members and friends are asked to make donations in his memory to "Racing Against Cancer," John Blanchette, P.O. Box 1092, Westbrook, CT 06498.

Carolyn P. (Slavin) Ohlson

WHITMAN, Mass. - Carolyn P. (Slavin) Ohlson, 76, of Whitman, formerly of Hingham, died at her home on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, after a period of failing health.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John L. and Carolyn (Lyons) Slavin. she was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament Academy, and also attended Katherine Gibbs School, John Robert Powers Modeling School, and Mount St. Vincent School, all in New York.

She was a Campfire leader in Hingham, and a Boy Scout den mother in New York and Hingham.

She also competed in equestrian riding.

She resided in Whitman for the past 27 years, coming from Hingham.

She was the wife of the late Robert E. Ohlson.

Survivors include her children, R. Craig Ohlson of Claremont, N.H.; Kent J. and Scott L. Ohlson, both of York, Maine; and Carole J. Baggs of Bridgewater; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, John J. Slavin.

OHLSON - Carolyn P. (Slavin) Ohlson, 76, of Whitman, Mass., formerly of Hingham, Mass., died March 7, 2001. A funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Prophett Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. (Route 18), Bridgewater, Mass. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church in Hingham. Visiting hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery.

Herbert Edward "Buster" Barrett Jr.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas - Herbert Edward "Buster" Barrett Jr., 74, died suddenly on Friday, March 9, 2001, at his home in Port Arthur.

He was born Oct. 18, 1926, the son of Thelma (Drake) Barrett of Rye, N.H., and the late Herbert E. Barrett. He attended Portsmouth, N.H., schools until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

After his discharge in 1947, he worked as a boiler tender on the Boston & Maine Railroad and later as a security officer for the government at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He also worked as a diesel mechanic on the tugboats in Portsmouth, where he renewed his love for the sea and began a new career in the Merchant Marine. He was the first graduate of the Mates program in 1968, which enabled merchant seamen to progress to officer level.

He began his career as an able-bodied seaman and grew through the ranks, retiring as captain. His tenure in the Merchant Marine took him to virtually every port in the world.

Friends from Phippsburg, Maine, to Bermuda to Alaska and all points in between will sorely miss him. He enjoyed traveling extensively as well as watching any sports game between Texas and any New England team. He was also a well-known chef from the Rockingham Hotel to Kennedy's Restaurant.

In addition to his mother, family members include his wife of more than 25 years, Dorothy Barrett of Port Arthur; one daughter, Linda Baribeault and her husband, Wayne, of Farmington, N.H.; two sons, Herbert Edward Barrett III of Dover, N.H., and Mike J. Barrett of Portsmouth; one stepdaughter, Valda Simon of Orange, Texas; one sister, Carol Kennedy of Rye, N.H.; eight grandchildren, including Kim Dion and John Goodwin, both of Farmington, and Michelle Heon of East Rochester, N.H.; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Charlotte Nowaczyk Powers and Dolores Lovejoy.

BARRETT - Herbert Edward "Buster" Barrett Jr., 74, of Port Arthur, Texas, died March 9, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Verna Hafford Kimball

KITTERY, Maine - Verna Hafford Kimball, 100, former school teacher, of Kittery, Maine, and Fort Myers, Fla., passed away Thursday, March 8, 2001, in Fort Myers.

Born in Patten, Maine, on Sept. 21, 1900, she was the daughter of Calvin L. and Margie (Violette) Hafford.

She graduated from the Madawaska Teachers Training School in Fort Kent, Maine, and started a long teaching career in Maine and Connecticut. She studied at Presque Isle, Farmington and Castine Normal schools and the University of New Hampshire.

She was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Kittery, Senior Citizens of Kittery, AARP, NRTA and NEA. Also a former member of The Rebecca Lodge and the Grange in Hermon, Maine.

She was the wife of Floyd L. Kimball, who passed away in 1973. She retired from teaching in 1963. In her later years she spent summers at her home in Kittery and the remainder of the year in Fort Myers.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen, and son-in-law, Emmett Nealon; five grandchildren, Sharon, Michael, Kevin and Christopher Nealon and Kimberly Poppalardo; two granddaughters-in-law, Linda and Robin Nealon; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlin; a grandson-in-law, Joseph Poppalardo; a sister, Myrtle Hoyt; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will take place in the spring in Kittery.

George E. Lane

KITTERY, Maine - George E. Lane, 83, the loving husband of Madeline D. (Curtis) Lane, passed away at his home on Friday, March 9, 2001.

Born in Gloucester, Mass., on Feb. 7, 1918, he was the son of the late George E. and Ingeborg (Johnson) Lane.

He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 30 years of service. He loved the outdoors, boats, bicycles and often found the trash of others as his treasure.

Family members include his wife of 63 years; three children, Judith Lane Simonds and her husband, Graham, of Ogunquit, Bruce C. Lane and his wife, Castania, of Eliot, and Jacqueline Lane of Eliot; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert G. Lane of Eliot; and one sister, Ruth E. Chefalo of Winchester, Mass.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of the arrangements.

Beverly K. Gerry

ELIOT, Maine - Beverly K. Gerry, 69, of 7 Rosemary Lane, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on May 10, 1930, in Fresno, Calif., she was the daughter of Albert and Gertrude (Wright) Pillion.

At a young age, her family moved to the Newton, Mass., area, where she attended school and graduated from Newton High School. Until her retirement she was employed by the Exeter visiting nurse service as a personal-care attendant.

Besides her enjoyment of family, she was an avid reader and a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in York, Maine, and the John F. Hill Grange #393 of Eliot.

She is survived by her husband, William Gerry of Eliot; her daughters, Debbie Hilton of Lancaster, N.H., and Pamela Ashley of Somersworth, N.H.; her sons, David A. Connoly of Kittery, Maine, Philip Connoly of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and John Harvey of Rollinsford, N.H.; her stepson, Bradley "Sam" Gerry of Eliot; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Kathy.

GERRY - Beverly K. Gerry, 69, of 7 Rosemary Lane, Eliot, Maine, died March 10, 2001, at York Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, ME 03904. Family flowers only. Please make donations in her memory to the York Visiting Nurse Association, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Rudolph J. Sibik

SOMERSWORTH - Rudolph J. Sibik, 86, of 10 Indigo Hill Road died suddenly on Sunday, March 11, 2001, at his residence.

Born in Ludlow, Mass., Sept. 24, 1914, he was the son of John and Mary (Grusza) Sibik. He was educated in Ludlow schools, graduating from Ludlow High, Class of 1931. He then attended Community college in Lynn, Mass.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Corps. Before entering the Navy, he worked for the Rockefeller Foundation at Mount Hope Farm in Williamstown, Mass.

After serving in the Navy, he was employed at Somersworth Shoe for 33 years, retiring in 1976 and serving on the executive board of directors for the United Shoe Workers of America.

He enjoyed reading and gardening.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 69 in Somersworth and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Joseph Sibik, and by a sister, Helen Suares.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sophie (Koufos) Sibik; a son, John Sibik and his wife, Linda, of Dover; a daughter, Marsha Schofield and her husband, Peter, of Rye; three grandchildren, Matthew Schofield, Andrew Sibik and Brian Sibik; a brother, Charles Sibik of Thorndike, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Koula Koufos of Somersworth; a brother-in-law, Chris Koufos of Somersworth; and nieces and nephews.

SIBIK - Rudolph J. Sibik of Indigo Hill Road, Somersworth, died March 11, 2001. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Roberge Funeral Home, 298 High St., Somersworth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with Father Arthur Athans officiating. Burial will be in the Greek Orthodox Cemetery in the spring. Memorials may be made to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 110, Somersworth, NH 03878.

Audrey E. Butler

YORK, Maine - Audrey E. Butler, 77, of 12 Beechwood Ave., died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on Jan. 24, 1924, in Kent, England, she was the daughter of Reginald and Edith (Lammerton) Manning and attended England schools.

She had worked at Porteous Clothing Store in Portland and at the Homewood Inn in Yarmouth.

She had resided in Marblehead, Mass.; Yarmouth; and Florida before moving to York in 1998. She also lived in Holland for five years.

She was an active volunteer in her communities and had been a volunteer at York Community Services and at the Salem Hospital, Salem, Mass.

Survivors include her husband, Hector Butler of York; three sons, Ian H. Butler of Norman, Okla.; Reginald K. Butler of Marblehead, Mass.; and Andrew C. Butler of Mississippi; one daughter, Audrey J. Yeaton of York; one sister, Marjorie Goodfellow of Walberton, England; and six grandchildren.

BUTLER - Audrey E. Butler of Beechwood Avenue, York, Maine, died March 11, 2001. Funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, in St. George's Episcopal Church, York Harbor. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the York Community Services Association, P.O. Box 444, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Arrangements are by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Cortnee Rae Adam

KENSINGTON - Cortnee Rae Adam, 31, of South Road died suddenly Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

Born on Feb. 9, 1970, in Kearney, Neb., she was the daughter of Connie (Hart) Adam and the late Herman Adam Jr.

She attended schools in the Loomis, Neb., school system, moving to the New England area in her teens. More recently, she worked as a successful Tupperware representative until her illness set in.

She loved music and singing, and enjoyed being with friends.

In addition to her mother, survivors include her son, Trevor Joshua Adam, and her brother, Curtiss Adam, both of Kensington; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Nebraska.

ADAM - Cortnee Rae Adam of South Road, Kensington, died March 11, 2001. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friends St., Amesbury, Mass. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Services and burial will be private.

Lois K. (Kierstead) Harwood

MEDFIELD, Mass. - Lois K. (Kierstead) Harwood, 74, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Charlwell House Nursing Home in Norwood.

She was born in Clinton, a daughter of James and Mary Jane (Johnston) Kierstead, and lived in Worcester for many years. She was a graduate of Commerce High School and attended Radcliffe College.

She had worked for the Norton company as a secretary for several years before joining the Dover-Sherborn School system.

She was a member of the Greendale People's Church of Worcester and the United Church of Christ in Medfield.

She leaves her husband of 50 years, Robert B. Harwood; two sons, Craig S. Harwood of Medfield and Brent D. Harwood of Westborough; a daughter, Gail H. Sanders of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren; and three nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother Wayne E. Kierstead.

HARWOOD - Lois K. (Kierstead) Harwood, 74, died March 10, 2001. There are no calling hours. The funeral service will be private. Burial will take place in Brookfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, National Headquarters, P.O. Box 806457, Chicago, IL 60680-3638. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Frederick H. Baldwin Jr.

YORK, Maine - Frederick H. Baldwin Jr., 54, of Bayberry Lane, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at York Hospital, following a four-year battle against cancer.

Born Aug. 13, 1946, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of Frederick H. and Barbara (Beal) Baldwin Sr.

He graduated from Tewksbury (Mass.) High School and attended Lowell (Mass.) Technological Institute.

He began his building career at age 18 in Tewksbury. His love of building brought him to York more than 15 years ago to establish Frederick H. Baldwin Jr. Inc. He was a successful developer and businessman who dedicated much of his time and efforts to the town of York.

He was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Home Builders' Association, York Housing Authority and the York Golf and Tennis Club.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Ellen F. (Connolly) Baldwin of York; a son, Christopher P. Baldwin of Santa Monica, Calif.; a daughter, Katie E. Baldwin of York; his parents, Frederick H. and Barbara Baldwin Sr. of Tewksbury; and a sister, Marcia Foster of York.

BALDWIN - Frederick H. Baldwin Jr. of Bayberry Lane, York, Maine, died March 11, 2001, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. George's Episcopal Church, York Street, York Harbor. Visiting hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.
