Raymond B. Ryder

EAST ROCHESTER - Raymond B. Ryder, 82, of 39 Grove St., died Tuesday evening, March 13, 2001, at his home, surrounded by loving family.

Born in Lynn, Mass., Aug. 15, 1918, he was the son of S. Bernard and Grace (Saunders) Ryder.

He graduated from Lynn English High School in 1936 and Northeastern University in 1941 as a chemical engineer. He worked in Saugus, Mass., at GE Riverworks for many years and transferred in 1960 to GE in Somersworth, N.H., as a specialist in butyl rubber. He retired in 1981 after 40 years of service.

He will always be remembered for his devotion to family, especially the children, and his love of life and laughter. There was nothing more precious to him than hearing us laugh and enjoy life.

The family would like to thank the Rochester Rural District VNA/Hospice for their attentive caring during his last few weeks.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Florence (Atwater) Ryder in 1983; a granddaughter, Faye-Ela Barber in 1983; and a daughter, Dianne (Barber) Ross in 1992.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn (Scruton) Ryder of East Rochester; two daughters, Evelyn (Ryder) Morrison "Cookie" and her husband, Larry, of Balston Lake, N.Y.; Faith (Barber) Moore and her husband, Timothy, of Gilmanton; four sons, Ralph Barber and his wife, Karen, of East Machias, Maine; Brian Barber and his wife, Marilyn of East Rochester; David Barber of Palisades, Colo.; and Keith Barber of Spokane, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

RYDER - Raymond B. Ryder of Grove Street, East Rochester, died March 13, 2001. Calling hours were held Thursday at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Friday) in the chapel of the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Handicap Fund" at Grace Baptist Church, East Rochester, N.H.

Enid I. Ford

HAMPTON - Enid I. Ford, 91, of 564 Exeter Road, formerly of 569 Exeter Road, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at her home.

Born in Manchester, on Oct. 2, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Cora (Carr) Wyman.

A lifelong resident, she attended local schools, graduating from Hampton Academy. She attended post-secondary education in Middletown, Conn.

She was a longtime member and former treasurer for 28 years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Amesbury, Mass. She enjoyed gardening, planting and her flowerbeds.

She was the wife of Robert M. Ford, who died in 1996.

Family members include one son, Robert M. Ford Jr. of Riverside, Calif.; three daughters, Nyleen Rhodus of East Wenatchee, Wash.; Lorraine Walton of Hot Springs, Ark.; and Joyce Wever, of Hampton; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Kent Ford, who died in 2000; and a sister, Ruby McKee.

FORD - Enid I. Ford, 91, of 564 Exeter Road, Hampton, died March 15, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Randy L. Ulrey, 36

DOVER - Randy L. Ulrey, 36, of 24 Wellington Ave., died suddenly on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at his home.

Born in Newton, Iowa, on June 7, 1964, the son of Richard and Jean (Benson) Ulrey, he grew up in and graduated from schools in Montezuma, Iowa. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1982 and was stationed at Pease Air Force Base in 1985 when he got out of the service, and settled in Dover.

He was very involved in Dover youth activities and coached Dover Youth Football, Big Minor baseball and soccer. His hobbies were fishing, coin collecting and metal detecting.

He loved his job as a senior computer technician with Liberty Mutual Co. in Dover and had previously worked in the Portsmouth office.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married 17 years ago next month, Cindy (Richardson) Ulrey of Dover; two sons, Michael Ulrey and Daniel Ulrey of Dover; his parents, Richard and Jean Ulrey of Grinnell, Iowa; his paternal grandmother, Urscelldine Ulrey of Newton, Iowa; and a brother Terry Ulrey of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

There are no visiting hours and no funeral service is planned.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial be made either to Dover Youth Football, c/o Chuck Maglaras, 362 Back Road, Dover NH 03820; or Dover Big Minor Baseball, c/o Bruce Thorner, Glenwood Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Catherine Elizabeth Whipple

SUGAR HILL - Catherine Elizabeth Whipple, 93, of Route 117, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Hampton following a prolonged struggle with old age.

Born in Salem, Mass., she was the daughter of George and Lucy (Higgins) Humes. During the great fire in Salem, she and her family moved to Beverly, Mass. She attended school in Beverly, and went on to graduate with a teaching degree from the Salem Normal School. She taught elementary grades for several years in the Everett and Boston, Mass., school systems.

She and her husband Ralph owned and operated the LedgeLand Inn and Cottages in Sugar Hill for more than 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband in 1976, but she continued to operate the inn until recently when her son Brad took over the operation.

For many years she was an active member of the Sugar Hill Willing Workers. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Johnston in 1990.

She is survived by her son, Bradford Whipple of Sugar Hill; grandchildren, Barbara Whipple, Steven Johnston, Maria Whipple, Carolyn Bell and George Whipple; and seven great-grandchildren.

WHIPPLE - Catherine Elizabeth Whipple, 93, of Route 117, Sugar Hill, N.H., passed away March 14, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on April 7 at the Sugar Hill Community Church, with the Rev. Thomas Golden officiating. Burial will take place in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Sugar Hill. Those who wish may make donations in her memory to the North Country Home Health Agency, 536 Cottage St., Littleton, NH 03561. The Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Those wishing further information or to sign a register may log on to www.rossfuneral.com.

LANE - George E. Lane, 83, of Kittery, Maine, died March 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, at the Second Christian Church, 33 Government St., Kittery. Patricia A. Comer

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Patricia A. Comer, 51, of 61 Witchtrot Road, died suddenly on Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

Born Jan. 31, 1950, in Dover, she was the daughter of Patrick and Gabrielle (Somerset) Hughes. She grew up in South Berwick and was a graduate of Marshwood High School, attended Endicott College and earned her teaching certificate from the University of New Hampshire.

She was an avid participant in all her children's activities and fund-raisers. She was a member of the Sunday Sports Group of South Berwick, the Historical Society of South Berwick, and enjoyed the Chadbourne archaeological dig yearly in South Berwick. She loved snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, swimming and hiking.

She had been a teacher at the Woodman Park Elementary School in Dover for many years.

Patricia was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Mark E. Comer; a daughter, Darcey Comer; and a son, Shane Comer, all of South Berwick; a sister, Karen Andrews and her husband, Carl, of Lyman; three brothers, Dana Hughes and his wife, Melanie; John Hughes and his wife, Christina; and Kevin Hughes, all of South Berwick; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

COMER - Patricia A. Comer of Witchtrot Road, South Berwick, Maine, died March 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., with the Rev. Donna Lee Muise. pastor of the First Parish Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to either the So. Berwick Historical Society, P.O. Box 296, So. Berwick, ME 03908; or So. Berwick Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 157, So. Berwick, ME 03908.

Irving S. (Ike) Cross

BRENTWOOD - Irving S. (Ike) Cross, age 68, of Old Danville Road, died Friday, March 16, 2001, after being admitted to Exeter Hospital.

A native of Somerville, Mass., he was born Nov. 20, 1932, son of the late Irving and Elsie (Bowker) Cross. He had resided in Brentwood the past 45 years, where he had been active in town affairs being former town road agent and for the past 25 years serving as selectman, many years as chairman.

He graduated from Somerville High School and was in the Coast Guard for seven years. He was a member of Gideon Lodge, Kingston, and the Brentwood Seniors.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Carol Chase Rogers Cross of Brentwood; a son, Kenneth A. Cross of Brentwood; three daughters, Marcia E. Sparks of Punta Gorda, Fla.; Tammy L. Cross of Boca Raton, Fla.; and Pamela Schaaff of Brentwood; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Irving S. Cross III.

Being an only child, he leaves three cousins, C. Edward Bowker of Lexington, Mass.; Robert I. Bowker of Pace, Fla.; and Alberta Stevenson of Goffstown.

CROSS - Irving S. Cross of Old Danville Road, Brentwood, died March 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday from The Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Route 111 in Brentwood. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. only, today (Sunday) at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, and again from 7 to 9 p.m. only, on Monday. Spring burial will be in the Brentwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ike Cross Memorial Fund for the Children of Swasey Central School, c/o Marty Summers, Dalton Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Marion Etta (Garnett) Lord

MOODY, Maine - Marion Etta (Garnett) Lord of 243 Ocean Ave. died Friday, March 16, 2001, at her residence.

She was born in Calais, the daughter of Raymond and Ethel (Rouse) Garnett and attended Calais and Kennebunk schools.

She operated a cottage rental business in Moody for many years and along with her husband was one of the founding members of the Moody Beach Association.

She attended the Ogunquit Baptist Church and was a life member of the Priscilla Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Ogunquit Women's Club.

She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and square dancing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry C. Lord, who died in 1982; and by two brothers, George Garnett and Walter Garnett.

Survivors include two daughters, Methel "Mickey" Thompson of Charlestown, R.I., and Jennie Shepard of Glen Ellen, Calif.; three sisters, Lena Hill of Kennebunk, Pauline Quilter of Sun City, Fla., and Ethel Littlefield of Kittery; three grandchildren, William Buono of Standish, Robert Buono of Ledyard, Conn., and Rhonda Cawood of Cape Elizabeth; and five great-grandchildren.

LORD - Marion E. Lord of Ocean Avenue, Moody, Maine, widow of Harry C. Lord, died March 16, 2001, in Moody. Funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Services by Madonna Chapter O.E.S. at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm, Laudholm Farm Road, Wells, ME 04090.

Rita J. (Pierce) Chamberlain

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine - Rita J. (Pierce) Chamberlain, 72, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 15, 2001, at a local hospital.

Born in Concord, N.H., she was the daughter of Claude G. and Evelyn A. (Symonds) Pierce, was educated in Concord and in Eliot, Maine, schools, graduated from Eliot High School, Class of 1946, and graduated from hairdressers school in Concord.

In her early years, she was employed at a New Hampshire beauty shop, doing hair for guests at the Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle.

Her interests included reading, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family, especially at their camp on Sebago Lake.

She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church of Cape Elizabeth, where she was active in the Women's Workshop Group, and was responsible for the boutique at the annual church fairs held in August and December.

She had served as a den mother for the Cape Elizabeth Cub Scouts and was a former member of the Cape Elizabeth Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Paul G. Chamberlain of Cape Elizabeth; one daughter, Marian C. Fasulo of South Portland; three sons, Robert P. and Richard P. Chamberlain, both of Dover, N.H.; and David P. Chamberlain of Falmouth; three sisters, Evelyn Sirrell of Portsmouth, N.H.; her twin sister, Ruth Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Bernadine Schnitzler of Eliot; one brother, Lloyd Pierce of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.

CHAMBERLAIN - Rita J. (Pierce) Chamberlain of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, the wife of Paul G. Chamberlain, died March 15, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bartholomew Church, Cape Elizabeth. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Should friends desire, contributions may be made in her memory to the Cape Elizabeth Rescue Unit 325, Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107.

Merida E. (White) Mills

EVERETT, Mass. - Merida E. (White) Mills, of Everett died Thursday, March 15, 2001.

Beloved wife of the late Frederick B. Mills; loving mother of Barbara Roy of Tennessee, Kenneth J. of New Jersey, William F. of New Hampshire, Douglas L. of New Jersey, Pamela Donahue of Abington, Charles H. of Connecticut, Stephen A. of Everett and Norma J. Mills of Everett; sister of Avanelle Saurman of York, Maine; Lloyd White of Virginia Beach, Va.; and the late James R. and Frederick White.

Also survived by 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

MILLS - Merida E. (White) Mills, of Everett, Mass., died March 15, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the J.E. Henderson Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Everett. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours from 2 to 6 p.m. today (Sunday). Burial will be private. Albert E. Johnson

HAMPTON - Albert E. Johnson, 90, of 22 Tuck Road, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Seacoast Health Center.

He was born in Norwood, Mass., July 16, 1910, the son of the late Eric and Hilda (Sperstrom) Johnson. He had been a resident here since 1986, coming from Woburn, Mass.

He was a carpenter in Boston's metro west area for many years, working as a subcontractor for various home builders. He also worked several years in the security department of Wang Labs.

He was the husband of the late Jessie W. (Patterson) Johnson, who died in 1996.

Family members include a son, Albert A. Johnson of Deerfield; four daughters, Jessie M. O'Shea of Andover, Mass.; Patricia C. Poley of Billerica, Mass.; Frances M. Blais of Malden, Mass.; and Joan E. Rowe of York, Maine; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON - Albert E. Johnson, of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, died Sunday, March 18, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Ward James "Jim" Killion

LEE - Ward James "Jim" Killion, 59, of North River Road, died March 18, 2001, after a long struggle with cancer.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 22, 1941, he was the only child of Ward and Gwendlyn (Hood) Killion. He attended schools at St. Mary's in Ohio; and in Andover, Mass., and Woodsville, N.H.

A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in mechanical engineering, he worked briefly in Boston before entering the world of Formula V auto racing from 1968 to 1973. In 1969, at age 28, he won the National Championship in the Formula V class in the American Road Race of Champions at the Daytona Speedway.

The following year (1970) he made it two-in-a-row at Daytona by beating out nearly 100 other Formula V drivers, including many from Europe, in the "Trans Atlantic Challenge" for the Col. George M. Smith Memorial Trophy. Later that year he also raced at the Nurburgring raceway in West Germany. He also won the Brundage Trophy for sportsmanship in auto racing.

In 1974, he moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where he lived for several years. Returning to the United States in 1978, he settled in the Portsmouth area, where he worked as an independent contractor for nearly two decades. He was known as a skilled craftsman and builder who specialized in remodeling old homes.

Since 1997, he had been employed by Williams Communications as a title specialist and right-of-way agent in the selection of routes for fiber-optic cable systems from Virginia to the greater Boston area.

Jim was a lifelong sports car enthusiast who loved driving on remote country roads and visiting places like Vermont's Northern Kingdom and the Amish settlements in Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed playing the stock market and using his considerable skills fine-tuning the automobiles of his many friends.

He is survived by first cousins in New York and Texas; and his companion, Alishia Leck; and his many friends in the Seacoast region.

KILLION - Ward James "Jim" Killion, of North River Road, Lee, died March 18, 2001. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Spring burial will be in Ladd Cemetery, Haverhill, N.H. Memorial donations may be made to Kinzer Mennonite Church, Church Road, Kinzer, PA 17535; or the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.
