Katherine "Katie" Hanson Sturtevant

YORK, Maine - Katherine "Katie" Hanson Sturtevant, 82, of 32 Avon Ave., died of lung cancer on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her residence.

She was born on April 24, 1918, in York, the daughter of Augustine C. and Katherine (Doyle) Hanson and was a 1935 graduate of York High School. She also attended Gorham Normal School and Gray's Business School in Portland.

Katie was a part-time bank teller at Ocean National Bank in York for 25 years.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church in York. She had formerly been active as a Cub Scout leader, a past-president of the Parent-Teachers Association and a Candy Striper organizer at York Hospital.

She enjoyed traveling and was a member of Elder Hostel. She also enjoyed canoeing and was a member of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association and the Saco River Salmon Club.

She was predeceased by a brother, James D. Hanson, who died in 1999.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Robert P. Sturtevant Jr. of York; two sons, Robert P. Sturtevant III of York and Mark G. Sturtevant of Mt. Olive, Ala.; three daughters, Kathleen M. Sturtevant of Kennebunkport, Maine, Barbara S. Jones of Edenton, N.C., and Patricia S. Thomas of Washington, D.C.; and six grandchildren.

STURTEVANT - Katherine H. Sturtevant, of 32 Avon Ave., York, Maine, wife of Robert P. Sturtevant Jr., died March 17, 2001, in York. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 23, at St. Christopher Church, York St., York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Affiliate, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Yvonne Marie Bernier

EXETER - Yvonne Marie Bernier, 85, of 2 Morrow St., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Exeter Health Care, after a long illness.

She was born July 31, 1915, in St. Jean Port Joli, Quebec, Canada.

She had resided in Exeter for the past 25 years and had formerly lived in Epping for 40 years, coming from Canada in 1936. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church and French Club. She was the widow of Camille Bernier, who died in 1974.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Bernier and Ronald Bernier, both of Exeter; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Antonia St. Pierre and Hazel St. Pierre, both of St. Jean Port Joli, Quebec, Canada; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Francis Ouillet.

She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

BERNIER - Yvonne Marie Bernier of Morrow Street, Exeter, died March 19, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Epping. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 136 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Yvonne G. (Sellers) Perron

AMESBURY, Mass. - Yvonne G. (Sellers) Perron, 43, of 1 Arlington St., Amesbury, died Monday, March 12, 2001, after a short illness. She was the wife of John P. Perron, formally of Manchester, N.H.

Born in Hollywood, Fla., Nov. 10, 1957, she was the daughter of Luke and Ruth (Payne) Sellers of Hollywood.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two daughters, Nicolette Brewster and Yvette Perron, both of Amesbury; and five sisters and three brothers, all of Florida.

Memorial services were held Friday at the Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Amesbury.

Christina Gingras Carter

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Christina Gingras Carter, 85, passed away in her home in Los Angeles on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, of cancer.

She is survived by her son, Raymond Gingras of California; daughters, Joanne Morse of New York and Sheila Perrault of New Hampshire; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Stephen E. Hilton

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - Stephen E. Hilton, son of Lester and Alison (Alexander) Hilton, died suddenly Thursday, March 15, 2001, at his home in Amelia.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., Sept. 9, 1951, he attended Portsmouth High School and served four years in the United States Air Force. He subsequently began a career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, eventually transferring to Kings Bay Georgia Shipyard, where he retired in 2001 with 25 years' service.

He is survived by his parents, Lester and Alison Hilton of Portsmouth; two brothers, Lester Hilton of Lancaster, N.H., and Dennis Hilton of Wakefield, N.H.; two sisters, Judy Seger of Lebanon, Maine, and Joanne Hilton of Portsmouth, N.H.; three loving children, daughters, Susan and Barbie Hilton of Amelia Island, and a son, David Hilton of St. Petersburg; several nieces and nephews; and a grandson, Nicholas.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Curtis Lake Christian Church, 77 West View Drive, Sanford, Maine.

Edna A. Shea

DUNNELLON, Fla. - Edna A. Shea, 66, of Dunnellon, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Sylvia's Hospice House.

Born Nov. 17, 1934, in Castle Eaton, England, she was the daughter of Herbert V. and Alice Cole Ockwell. She lived in Portsmouth, N.H., before moving to Dunnellon.

She was a buyer for the U.S. Government Exchange for the Army and Air Force. She was a member of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include her husband, John F. Shea, of Ocala; a daughter, Stacy Shea of New Castle, N.H.; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, John Paul Shea, in May, 1986.

SHEA - Edna A. Shea of Dunnellon, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died March 18, 2001. Funeral services at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hiers Memorial Chapel at TimberRidge, Ocala, Fla., with Father Raymond Lettre officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1180, Ocala, FL 34478; or the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St., Atlanta, GA 30309. Arrangements by the Heirs Memorial Chapel at TimberRidge.

Irene B. Rose

PORTSMOUTH - Irene B. Rose, widow of William R. Rose, of Portsmouth, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Hampton, daughter of the late William and Georgie (Hook) Blake of Hampton.

Irene graduated from what was then Keene Normal School. She taught three years in a rural school in Goffstown and three years in Waltham, Mass., where she taught seventh-grade English. She taught 31 years in Portsmouth at the junior high school. In those years, she taught seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade English and served as chairman of the English Department.

She spent one summer in Europe attending seminars at the Sorbonne, University of Rome, University of Munich and University of London.

She served on the board of Portsmouth Women's Asylum, the oldest charity organization in New Hampshire. For 10 years she was chairman of the Economy Shop of St. John's Church, where she was a communicant for more than 50 years.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

ROSE - Irene B. Rose of Portsmouth died Monday, March 19, 2001. Graveside services will be announced at a later date. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William Richard Rose and Irene Blake Rose Scholarship Fund, c/o St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

JACKSON - A military memorial service will be held for Lt. Col. Linwood S. Jackson, USAF, retired, at the Portsmouth Country Club, 80 Country Club Lane, Greenland, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27. Social hour to follow from 2 to 4 p.m. All friends and relatives are invited.

Charles G. Ingram

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Charles G. Ingram, 42, of 433 Greenleaf Ave., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Monday, with services at the New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, pastor, officiated. Pianist was Carrie Coltrane. Scripture readings were given by Nathaniel Holloway, Lionel White and Irving Heughan. The Prayer of Consolation was given by Nathaniel Holloway. Jarvis Williamson gave the obituary reading, and ushers were Jarvis Williamson and Kelvin Edwards.

Bearers were Alvin Dixon, Ed Wiseman, Gregory Givens, Jimmy Thomas, Milton Thomas, David Thomas and Larry Ingram.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery in the spring.

Wake services were held Sunday evening at the funeral home by the Rev. Hilson.

Elizabeth R. Wentworth

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth R. Wentworth, 91, of 188 Jones Ave., died on Monday, March 19, 2001, at Sunbridge Healthcare in Portsmouth after a lengthy illness.

Born Oct. 11, 1909, in Brentwood, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Euginie (Thayer) Rand. She graduated cum laude from UNH in 1931 with a B.A. in history.

Family members include one daughter, Patricia Torrence of Berkeley Hills, N.J.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jonathan Wentworth.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Lester Llewlyn Burdick Jr.

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Lester Llewlyn Burdick Jr., 71, of Eastern Point Road, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on May 2, 1929, the son of Lester L. and Esther E. (Young) Burdick Sr. He attended grade schools in Belmont, Mass., and graduated from Williston Academy in Northampton, Mass. He received a B.A. in business management from Syracuse University. He served in the Navy as a pilot after receiving his wings at the Naval Cadet Flying Program in Pensacola, Fla. As a naval aviator, he landed many times on the aircraft carriers Midway and Hornet. After four years of active duty, he joined the Naval Reserve.

He joined his father in the family-owned insurance business, Lester L. Burdick Inc. in Andover, Mass, and was still active with the business at his time of death. He and his wife moved here from Groton, Mass., nine years ago.

He was a member of the Boardman-Ellis V.F.W. Post in Cape Neddick, the Elks in York, and both the York Golf and Country Club and the Cape Neddick Golf Club. He was a member and officer of the 76 Club and a member of the Algonquin Club in Boston. He was a member of the Shrine organization in Boston and served as Captain of the Mounted Patrol. He was elected to Jesters and Sordid in 1970. He was a ham radio operator and collector of antique automobiles. He enjoyed boating, fishing, photography, hunting, camping, flying and computers.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Susan R. (Lumpkin) Burdick of York Harbor; one son, Mark L. Burdick of Groveland, Mass.; four daughters, Lesann P. Van Valkenburg of York, Jennifer S. Metcalf of Kennebunk, Patricia A. Knox of York, and Suzanne E. Gerrard of San Francisco, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

BURDICK - Lester L. Burdick Jr. of York, Maine, died March 20, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Visiting hours are 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A reception will follow at the Stage Neck Inn, York Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner's Burn Hospital, 31 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Alfred Dennis Emerton

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Alfred Dennis Emerton, 61, of Sheru Lane, husband of Valerie (LeBlanc) Emerton, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Sept. 19, 1939, son of Malcolm and Dolores (Baird) Emerton.

He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a computer program analyst.

Survivors include his wife, Valerie (LeBlanc) Emerton of York Harbor; his mother, Dolores Emerton of Haverhill, Mass.; one daughter, Theresa M. Toledo of Derry, N.H..; three sons, Patrick J. Emerton of York, Michael R. Emerton of Chelsea, Mass., and Christopher D. Emerton of Wallingford, Conn.; one brother, Dennis Emerton of Moultonboro, N.H.; two grandchildren, Jacob G. Toledo of Derry, and Christopher Jack Emerton of Wallingford, Conn.

EMERTON - Alfred D. Emerton of York Harbor, Maine, died March 19, 2001, at York Hospital. Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with the family at his residence, 41 Sheru Lane, York Harbor, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made either to the German Home, 374 Howard St., Lawrence, MA 01841, or to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Gary D. Fegan

NEWMARKET - Gary D. Fegan, 52, of New Road, formerly of Hampton, and Eliot, Maine, died March 19, 2001, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

Born Sept. 11, 1948, in Exeter, he was the devoted son of Clayton and Almeda (Chase) Fegan.

During the Vietnam War he served in the Army National Guard. While in the service he received many medals, including National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Service Bar, Vietnam Service Ribbon with device, and Expert Badge with bar (M-16).

He was a 1968 graduate of Exeter High School.

He was also a member of the Church of Christ, Kittery, Maine.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved the Maine woods and spending time at camp at Phillips Lake in Lucerne-in-Maine with his family and friends.

He loved his grandchildren, Tristen and Tucker, and spent many enjoyable hours with them.

In Eliot he was a Little League and soccer coach.

He was predeceased by his brother, C. Wayne Fegan, in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jill (Monaghan) Fegan, of Newmarket; two sons, Denis and his fiancée, Robin Locke, of Brentwood and Jamie and his wife, Cherise, of Fremont; one sister, Linda French and her husband, David; two grandchildren, Tristen and Tucker Fegan, both of Fremont; several nieces and nephews, whose children called him Grandpy Gary or Poppy Gary; and several cousins.

FEGAN - Gary D. Fegan, of Newmarket, died March 19, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of Christ, 48 Love Lane, Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Philanthropy Office, 41 Mall Road, Burlington, MA 01805, or Rockingham Visiting Nurses Association, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket, is assisting with the arrangements.

Stanley H. Blanchard

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Stanley H. Blanchard, 62, of 199 McDonough St., were held Friday, March 16, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by the Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Burns and the Rev. Edward J. Kelley. Acolytes were David Palumbo and Michael Marconi. Organist was Nelson Ward and soloist was Pat Mackinson.

Members of St. Catherine Women's Club formed an honor guard at the church.

The eulogy was delivered by Stan's brother-in-law, Timothy Locke. A poem was read by his stepdaughter, Tonya Neihart.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Michael Sacks, Victor Binder, Troy Rauschenbach, Mike Locke and Troy Locke.
