Albert E. Johnson

HAMPTON - The funeral for Albert E. Johnson, 90, of Hampton, who died March 18, 2001, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Judith Kish was organist and pianist. Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist.

Mr. Johnson's children placed the pall over the casket. The readings were offered by three of his grandchildren.

Burial followed in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with the rite of committal conducted by Father Lavigne. Pallbearers were Peter O'Shea, Chris Blais, Shawn O'Shea, Paul Poley, Tim O'Shea, Buddy Blais, Nathan Johnson and John Poley.

JACKSON - A military memorial service will be held for Lt. Col. Linwood S. Jackson, USAF, retired, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Portsmouth Country Club, 80 Country Club Lane, Greenland. Social hour to follow from 2 to 4 p.m. All friends and relatives are invited.

Robert Ridgely Hull

DURHAM - Robert Ridgely Hull, 87, of Mill Road, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1913, in Newark, N.J., the son of Walter B. and Alice (Sanders) Hill.

He was a graduate of Montclair (N.J.) High School and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran serving during World War II.

Mr. Hull was employed by the Prudential Insurance Co., retiring after 44 years of service.

He was a charter member of American Legion Gibraltar Post No. 3256; a longtime member of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire; and many conservation organizations; and was an active Boy Scout leader.

He was an avid birder and fly fisherman and a talented craftsman.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sheila Hull; one daughter, Susan Neilson of McLean, Va.; one stepdaughter, Julie Dewdney of Canterbury; three stepsons, Ron Dewdney of Putney, Vt., Peter Dewdney of Mercer, Maine, and Murray Dewdney of Meridan; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen (Riey) Hull, who died in 1968.

HULL - Robert Ridgely Hull, of Mill Road, Durham, died March 22, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Community Church of Durham. Spring burial will be in Durham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the Seacoast Audubon Society, c/o Steve Mirick, 22 Bayview Drive, Newmarket, NH 03857. Assistance with the arrangements are by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

Lt. Col. Ralph L. Moore

PORTSMOUTH - Lt. Col. Ralph L. Moore, 74, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., on Sept. 19, 1926, he was the son of Jewel P. and Ralph L. Moore.

A highly decorated military officer, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, the 187th Airborne Regiment (U.S. Army) in Korea, and the 101st Airborne Division and Green Beret Special Forces in Vietnam. Among his decorations are the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Air Medal (2 OLC), Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Ribbon, Master Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Pathfinder Badge.

Family members include his wife of 46 years, Priscilla E. Moore of Portsmouth; three daughters, Beth C. Pingree, Laura P. Moore and Dana T. Lincoln; two sons, Brian G. Moore and Kevin S. Moore; six grandchildren; his mother, Jewel Shafmaster; a brother, Jonathan S. Shafmaster; a sister, Anne P. Burrer; and several nieces and nephews.

MOORE - Lt. Col. Ralph L. Moore, 74, of Portsmouth, died March 21, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Private services will be held for the immediate family on Saturday at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice.

Robert E. "Bob" McLaughlin

RYE - Mr. Robert E. "Bob" McLaughlin, 89, widower of Elizabeth (Mansur) McLaughlin, of 80 Harborview Drive, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Wentworth, N.H., on Dec. 25, 1911, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Lottie M. (Robinson) McLaughlin.

He attended the Concord Business School and was a graduate of Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking. Prior to his retirement, he was president of the Piscataqua Savings Bank in Portsmouth for more than 20 years.

Before moving to Portsmouth, in addition to his banking career, he also owned and operated an interior decorating business in Concord where he was very active in the Community Players. He served as treasurer for the Episcopal Diocese for more than 25 years and served as a lay preacher for 10 years in East Weare. It was at this time that he formed an enduring friendship with David H. Souter, now a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and his family.

Moving to Portsmouth in 1959, he was the youngest person to become a bank president in the state. He was trustee of the Prescott Sisters Trust Fund and instrumental in the design and formation of Prescott Park. He worked with Dorothy Vaughan to save and preserve the historical homes of Portsmouth and to found Strawbery Banke.

He wrote and published a book on the history of St. John's Church and a book on the city of Portsmouth titled "Water Street." He received a Gold Seal Citation from the N.H. Federation of Garden Clubs for special contributions toward the advancement of work in civic beautification.

He was a shareholder of Portsmouth Athenaeum; a director of the Financial Public Relations Association; a member of the board of directors of the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce; an incorporator of the Mark H. Wentworth Home; a member of St. John's Church in Portsmouth; a member of the Navy League, Mechanics Fire Society; Federal Fire Society; Pull and Be Damned Association; and served on the boards of the Wentworth Gardner House and the Warner House Association.

After his retirement, he volunteered at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Rodier of Rye and Nancy McClary of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two grandchildren, Robert T. Rodier and Ashley E. Rodier, both of Rye; and a nephew, Robert Hemeon of Laconia.

MCLAUGHLIN - Robert E. "Bob" McLaughlin, 89, of 80 Harborview Drive, Rye, died March 20, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Chapel Street, Portsmouth. Friends invited. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Thurston "Frank" Lewis Jr.

GREENLAND - Thurston "Frank" Lewis Jr., 68, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Middletown Springs, Vt., the son of Thurston F. Sr. and Elva (Greene) Lewis.

He attended school in Middletown Springs until he joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 18. Frank was in the service for 20 years, which included tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam.

He met his wife of 47 years, while he was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. They were married Nov. 8, 1955, in South Royalton, Vt., and moved to Greenland after he was assigned to Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a planner/estimator for more than 15 years.

He was a former member of the Greenland Volunteer Fire Department and the Piscataqua Fish and Game Club, where he taught the hunters safety course. He also belonged to the Amvets. He enjoyed woodworking, puzzles and playing cards with his mother-in-law, who was his favorite card partner. He also enjoyed his faithful companion "Lucy," his black cocker spaniel.

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Lewis, and a sister, Alice Lewis McMorrow.

He is survived by his wife of Greenland; three daughters, Marie L. Hall of Newmarket, Lee Ann M. Slattery of Saylorsborg, Pa., and Julie E. Henson and her husband, David, of Center Strafford; four grandchildren, Amy E. Hall, Ron Hall, Joshua Slattery and Ryan Slattery; one brother, Albert Lewis of Poultney, Vt.; one sister, Dorothy Parrin of Stoughton, Mass.; his mother-in-law, Mary Bettis Lemery of South Royalton, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

LEWIS - Thurston "Frank" Lewis Jr. of Greenland died March 21, 2001. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vt. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, immediately following visiting hours. Burial will be held in the spring in the Riverview Cemetery in South Royalton, Vt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

John Piccolomini

HAMPTON - John Piccolomini, 72, of 132 Kings Highway, former long-time resident of Leominster, Mass., died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his home.

Born in Brighton, Mass., Feb. 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Luigi and Maria (Bracani) Piccolomini and was the stepson of the late Graziella (Barassi) DiMarzio Piccolomini.

He was a graduate of Leominster, Mass. High School with the class of 1947. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army for 20 years in the positions of supply clerk, finance clerk, administrative non-commissioned officer, recruiter and career counselor for eight years, retiring in 1968.

In 1971 he received his bachelor's degree in education from Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg, Mass., and his master's degree in 1973. He taught social studies at Gallagher Junior High School in Leominster for 20 years, retiring in 1990. He served as Leominster High's golf coach for 18 years and refereed basketball, football and wrestling, starting back in the '40s when he was in high school.

Being a referee had always been a labor of love for him. He refereed 13 high school Super Bowl games and, during his time in the service, did some coaching and worked as a referee overseas. He served for a few years as the commissioner of the North Central Massachusetts Football Officials and was responsible for assigning officials to specific games.

Piccolomini had spent his summers at his home in Hampton since 1982, moving here year-round in 1990. After moving to Hampton he became an employee of the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach for the past eight years.

He was a member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and was also a member of the B.P.O.E. of both Leominster and Portsmouth.

He was the husband of Laura J. (Caisse) Piccolomini for 43 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include six stepsisters, Assunta Lanciani, Irene Tata, Vera Tocci, Lucy Ferranti, Angelina Christoforo, Gina DiMarzio, all of Leominster; and several nieces and nephews.

One stepsister, Aldina Latorre, predeceased him.

PICCOLOMINI - John Piccolomini, 72, of 132 Kings Highway, Hampton, died March 22, 2001. Services will be held at the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster, Mass., on Monday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Saturday, 2-4 p.m. and at the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, 2-5 p.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster. If desired, donations may be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, N.H. 03833.

Lulu M. (Ballard) Parsons

KITTERY, Maine - Lulu M. (Ballard) Parsons, 95, the widow of Arthur L. Parsons, of 33 Oak Terrace, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home of Portsmouth.

Born in Argyle, Maine, on Nov. 9, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Ora P. and Nellie (Spenser) Ballard and was a graduate of the Farmington State Normal School in Farmington, Maine.

She was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth and a lifetime member of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 90, Order of Eastern Star in Kittery.

While residing in Old Town, Maine, she had worked at the Penobscott Indian Trading Post and at HM Goldsmith's Women's Store.

She moved to Portsmouth in the 1970s from Springfield, Vt., and was a guide at Strawbery Banke.

Survivors include one son, Dexter L. Parsons of Lisbon Falls, Me.; one daughter, Myrna Adams of Derry; four grandchildren, George Adams Jr. of Everett, Wash.; Stephen Adams of Alaska; Bonnie Scriba of Seattle, Wash.; and Angelia Bishop of Lisbon Falls, Me.; several great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Reginald Ballard.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

LeRoy H. Salls

ELIOT, Maine - LeRoy H. Salls, 93, of 64 Beech Road, formerly of York, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on Oct. 7, 1907, in Somerville, Mass., he was the son of Harry and Lena (White) Salls and was a 1926 graduate of Brockton (Mass.) High School and received an associate's degree in business from Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary during World War II.

He worked at General Electric in Somersworth, N.H., for many years, retiring as head of the stockroom department in 1970. He had also been employed at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York for 25 years.

He was a member of the Eliot United Methodist Church. He was a master of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 98 of York in 1960 and a member of Kora Temple Shrine. He was a York volunteer fireman for 48 years and was a past president of the York County Firemen's Association. He volunteered for the blind in Wells and was always active helping the elderly in his community.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eva (Philbrick) Salls, who died on March 15, 1999.

Survivors include one son, Roger H. Salls of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kristin Dekalands and Adam Salls; and three great-grandchildren.

SALLS - LeRoy H. Salls, of 64 Beech Road, Eliot, Maine, formerly of York, died March 23, 2001, in York. Memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the United Methodist Church of Eliot, Route 236. Services by St. Aspinquid Lodge No. 98 at 6 p.m. A reception will follow at the York Village Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Eliot, Route 236, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

LeRoy "Charlie" Thayer

HAMPTON - LeRoy "Charlie" Thayer, 68, of 450 High St., died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born on May 28, 1932, in Hamilton, Mass., son of the late LeRoy Charles and Sarah (Southwick) Thayer Arnold.

He was a disabled veteran of the Korean War and a former member of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 4 Disabled American Veterans of Newington.

He worked as an interior, exterior self-employed painter for many years.

He served as a representative to the General Court of the state of New Hampshire in the early 1990s, representing Hampton and Hampton Falls. He also served the town of Hampton as a member of the Budget Committee and as a part-time police officer.

He resided here the past 30 years, coming from Salisbury, Mass. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Hamptons American Legion Post No. 35.

Family members include one son, William Thayer of Thailand and California; four daughters and their spouses, Carol Durant and her husband, Eric, of Hampton; Susan Eno and her husband, Eric, of Exeter; Pamela Thayer and her husband, Jerry, of Newburyport, Mass.; and Debra Unga and her husband, Louis, of Mesa, Ariz.; his former wife of 30 years, Linda G. (Welch) Thayer of Exeter; three sisters and their spouses, Betty Thayer Gosselin and her husband, Raymond, of Kingston; June Thayer Whitcomb and her husband, Ray, of Hampton; and Claire Thayer DeGrandpre and her husband, Charles, of Freeport, Maine; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends in Hampton.

THAYER - LeRoy "Charlie" Thayer, 68, of 450 High St., Hampton, died March 24, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, with American Legion services at 6:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, Mass., at 2 p.m. on Monday. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Rockingham Nutrition, c/o Meals on Wheels, 111 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Mr. Robert E. "Bob" McLaughlin

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Robert E. "Bob" McLaughlin, 89, of 80 Harborview Drive, Rye, were held on Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with services at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Timothy Rich, rector, and the Rev. Gordon Allen, rector emeritus, officiated. Words of reflection written by daughter Nancy McClary were read by the Rev. Rich. "A Prayer for Life and Death" was read by daughter Deborah Rodier. Ushers were Al and Ginny Edwards. Diane Colby Dean was organist.

In attendance were representatives from the Mark H. Wentworth Home and Piscataqua Savings Bank.

Burial will be in the spring in Central Cemetery, Rye.
