Milton L. Caverly

KEENE - Milton Lane Caverly, 79, of 46 Robbins Road, died Wednesday afternoon, April 4, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

He was a resident of Keene for the past two years, having lived in Wellesley, Mass., for 12 years and then Londonderry for the previous 22 years.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1922, in Portsmouth, the son of John Harold and Edith (Lane) Caverly.

He grew up in Greenland and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1940. He began attending Bentley College in Boston. His education was interrupted by his serving, at the rank of staff sergeant, in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in India and Okinawa during World War II. He graduated from Bentley College after the war.

He was employed for 38 years as an auditor by the Travelers Insurance Co. in both Boston and Manchester.

He was a member of the St. John's Masonic Lodge of Portsmouth and the American Legion in Londonderry.

He was the husband of Priscilla Wood of Keene.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Karen Seigenberg of Wrentham, Mass., and Kimberly O'Connell of Keene; a sister, Dorothy O'Leary of Stratham; a brother, Richard Caverly of Strafford; and five grandchildren.

CAVERLY - Milton Lane Caverly, 79, of Robbins Road, Keene, N.H., died April 4, 2001. Services will be private. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the Monadnock View Cemetery in Keene. The Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St., Keene, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Monadnock Humane Society, P.O. Box 678, West Swanzey, NH 03469.

Margaret H. Gilbert

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Margaret Hobbs (Elwell) Gilbert, 100, widow of Walter S. Gilbert, of 188 Jones Ave., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the SunBridge nursing home in Portsmouth.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1900, in North Berwick, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Cunningham) Elwell.

She was a strong, hardworking and courageous woman who loved and was loved by her family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth M. Gats of Portsmouth and Dorothy B. Melvin of Rockledge, Fla.; six grandchildren, Michele Cook of Kittery, Maine; Bethany Orlando of North Andover, Mass.; Claire Melvin of Chicago, Ill.; Tammy Joplin of Portsmouth; Matthew Gats of Eliot, Maine; and Thomas Melvin of South Berwick, Maine; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Elwell.

GILBERT - Mrs. Margaret Hobbs (Elwell) Gilbert, 100, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died April 4, 2001. A celebration of her long and happy life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the chapel. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to SunBridge Nursing Home Recreation Fund, 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Margaret E. Merrill

DURHAM - Margaret E. Merrill of 8 Meadow Road, Durham, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Webster at Rye Nursing Home.

Born April 5, 1910 in Amesbury, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Margaret (Hanley) O'Neil. She graduated from St. Joseph's School in Amesbury and was a 1927 graduate of Amesbury High School. After graduation from Bryant and Stratton Business School in Boston, she worked for a number of businesses in Newmarket and Boston, including Collier's magazine. She married Oliver B. Merrill of Amesbury in 1937. They lived in Amesbury until 1961, when they moved to South Hampton, N.H.

She served as a hospital volunteer, was a member of the Whittier Home Association and a founding member of South Hampton Friends of the Library. She was also an officer of the former Warren Manufacturing Company of Newfields.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Amesbury for many years and later, of Mary Mother of the Church in Newton, N.H. She had enduring interest in politics and baseball.

She was predeceased by her husband and by a son, Oliver B. Merrill, Jr., who both died in 1971, as well as by three brothers: John, James and Thomas O'Neil, and a sister, Ann Kerr.

She is survived by a son, John Merrill, and his wife, Emily, of Stowe, Vt.; a daughter, Amanda Merrill, and her husband, Kenneth Fuld, of Durham, with whom she resided until February; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Thomas of St. Augustine, Fla; four grandchildren, David and Stephen Merrill of Jacksonville, Fla., and Samuel and Anna Fuld of Durham; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Margaret, Erin and Emily Merrill of Jacksonville, Fla.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

MERRILL - A funeral Mass will be held for Margaret E. (O'Neil) Merrill, 90, of 8 Meadow Road, Durham. at 11 a.m. on Monday at Holy Family Parish's St. Joseph's Church, School Street, Amesbury, Mass. Private interment will be in Salisbury Point Cemetery, Amesbury. One hour of visitation will be held at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, New Hampshire affiliate, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury, Mass.

Barbara P. Abbott

PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Barbara P. Abbott, 69, of 35 Swett Ave., who died April 2, 2001, was held Thursday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church. The Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor, was the celebrant. Jean Goss was organist and Heather Weller was soloist. The readings were offered by Mrs. Abbott's son, Michael W. Abbott, and son-in-law George "Skip" Page. Her three grandchildren, Evan M. Page, Emma W. Page, and Lillian L. Page, presented the gifts to the altar.

Burial followed in the Calvary Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Jean.

Dorothy B. "Dotty" Santoro

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Dorothy B. "Dotty" Santoro, 47, of 188 Jones Ave. were held on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, in the spring.

Richard R.C. Erickson

PORTSMOUTH - Richard R.C. Erickson, 50, of 1430 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, died with dignity and heroism on April 5, 2001, after a 22-month battle with cancer.

Born in Milwaukee, Wis., on March 23, 1951, he is survived by his wife, soulmate, and best friend of 31 years, Barbara (Katkin) Erickson. In addition, survivors include his mother and father, Yolanda and Donald Boehm; his sister, Tamara and her husband, Mark Jasinski; his special nephew, Nicholas Jasinski; and his beloved aunt, Veronica Boehm, all of Milwaukee, Wis.; along with his best friend, John Washuta of Stoddard, N.H., whom Rick thought of as a brother.

The first police officer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to graduate from the Federal Law Enforcement Academy in Glynco, Ga., Rick pursued his dream of being involved in law enforcement as an officer for several police departments in the state of New Hampshire. He considered it an honor and a privilege to wear a policeman's badge and uniform.

Most recently, he was employed as a security supervisor at Yankee Greyhound, in Seabrook. He said many times that the men and women he worked with there were "family."

A kind, caring and generous man, Rick shared his love of football, muscle cars, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, animals, and "Beaker" with those who knew and loved him best.

ERICKSON - Richard R.C. Erickson, 50, of 1430 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, died April 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Route 1, Portsmouth, on Tuesday morning at 10. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday evening from 6 to 8. Burial will be private in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885; or to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Elmer Carl Brewer

KENSINGTON - Elmer Carl Brewer, 78, of Brewer Road, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at home after a period of failing health.

He was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Newton, N.H., son of the late Elmer P. and Mabel (Evans) Brewer.

He had resided in Kensington for the past 60 years. He was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1940.

He was a veteran of World War II, having been a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed in Italy and North Africa.

He had worked as a supervisor for the Exeter Manufacturing Co. for 25 years, and was later employed by the Exeter Hospital for several years.

He was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church, serving as its director of education during the 1950s and as deacon for several years.

He was a member of the Planning Board of Kensington during the 1960s. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was active with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

He was predeceased by his son, Matthew Brewer, who died in 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Worthen Brewer of Kensington; two sons, Mark Brewer and Peter Brewer, both of Kensington; two daughters, Nancy Roffman of Kensington and Sally Brewer of Philomath, Ore.; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.

BREWER - Elmer Carl Brewer, 78, of Brewer Road, Kensington, died April 5, 2001. There are no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held for the family in Village Cemetery, Kensington. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, 1 p.m., at Kensington Congregational Church. The Rev. David Lennox and Rev. Robert Thompson will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Kensington Congregational Church Education Fund, 128 Amesbury Road, Kensington, NH 03833; or to the Kensington Recreational Committee, Town Park Fund, Town Offices, Kensington, NH 03833. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Elaine M. Hamilton

ELIOT, Maine - Mrs. Elaine M. Hamilton, 55, of Eliot, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 21, 1945, in Everett, Mass., the daughter of the late Arthur and Eleanor (Butler) Rossi.

She attended local schools and the pursued a career in nursing. She worked for several years as a nurse's aide. Elaine and her family lived in Eliot for 11 years, having moved to the area from Woburn, Mass.

When she wasn't working, Elaine loved growing flowers and doing craft work. According to her family, some of the crafts she created could have put Martha Stewart to shame.

Mrs. Hamilton was a devoted housewife and mother. She is survived by her husband, John Hamilton Sr. of Eliot; two sons, Peter Sawyer of Claremont, N.H., and John Hamilton Jr. of Eliot; two daughters, Tammy Sawyer of York, and Bonnie Hamilton-Carneal of South Berwick; seven cherished and beloved grandchildren; and sister, Diane Sawyer of Wilmington, Mass.

Her kind, caring and generous heart will be missed by all.

HAMILTON - Mrs. Elaine Hamilton, 55, of Eliot, Maine, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will take place Monday, April 9, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Visitation hours will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will take place later this spring in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot.

Marcia R. Llewellyn

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Marcia R. Llewellyn, 78, of Manchester and New Castle, died April 6, 2001 in a Bedford, N.H. health care facility.

Born August 11, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of Philip A. Robinson and Eleanor Adams Hill. She grew up in Manchester and attended Central High School, graduating in 1940, and later graduated from UNH with a bachelor of arts degree in 1943. After graduation she worked a Reader's Digest in new York City for several years before returning to Manchester to marry Stanley D. Llewellyn, who passed away in 1994.

She had been a member of Brookside Congregational Church, Manchester Garden Club, Indian Ridge Tennis Club, and was a longtime board member of the Woman's Aid Home. she was also a Hospice volunteer in the Manchester area for many years.

Members of her family include her son, Philip R. Llewellyn of Londonderry, N.H.; three grandchildren, Gregory, Scott, and Kristen Llewellyn; a sister, Phyllis Heroneums of Amherst, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

LLEWELLYN - Marcia R. Llewellyn, 78, of Manchester and New Castle, N.H., died April 6, 2001. Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, at Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the chapel at Brookside Congregational Church, 2013 Elm St. Rev. William Donoghue will officiate. Leonard W. Stanley

ROCHESTER - Leonard W. Stanley, 58, former longtime resident of Rochester, died suddenly Friday, April 6, 2001, at home on Governor's Road, Farmington, where he most recently resided.

Born Dec. 4, 1941, in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of the late Morris C. Stanley and Mabel E. (Barlow) Stanley.

He had resided in Farmington for three months, having previously resided in Wakefield for four years and was a longtime resident of Rochester.

He owned and operated Colie's Paving of Rochester. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rochester.

Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and horse race's, having previously owned a race horse. He also enjoyed game shows and taking trips.

He is survived by his wife Karen K. (Doherty) Stanley of Farmington; his mother, Mabel E. (Barlow) Stanley Bachand of Rochester; six children, Linda Stanley Carr of Rochester, William Stanley of Tampa, Fla., Daniel Stanley, Keith Stanley, Tim and his wife, Joelle, Stanley of Rochester, and Amanda Stanley, all of Rochester; two stepchildren, Carrie Smith of Rochester and David Smith of Manchester; 11 grandchildren, Nicole Gagnon, Chantel Stanley, Kaylyn, Kyle and Joshua Stanley, Connie Stanley, Mikey, Kiara and Trevor Stanley, Alexander and Zachary Mayo; four brothers; Bobby Stanley of Rochester, Job Stanley of Farmington, Neil Stanley and Freddy Stanley, both of Rochester; several nieces and nephews and his former wife Lorraine Stanley of Rochester.

STANLEY - Leonard W. Stanley, 58, former longtime resident of Rochester, died April 6, 2001. Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St. in Farmington. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the funeral home, with Rev. Charles Whitford officiating. Interment will be later in the spring at the Rochester Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH 03101.

John C. Argue

HAMPTON - John C. Argue, 46, of Hampton, died Thursday, April 5, 2001.

Born May 8, 1954, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Dr. John S. and Mary Elliot (Peck) Argue of Gilmanton Iron Works.

He was a graduate of Bishop Brady High School in Concord with the class of 1972, also the University of Wisconsin, and did his graduate studies at American University in San Diego.

He worked as a software product manager at Lilly Software Associates of Hampton since 1993 and had resided here since then, coming from Pembroke.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 5093 of Hampton. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan G. (Burbank) Argue; three sons, Peter J. Argue, Daniel B. Argue, John P. Argue; two daughters, Sara E. Argue, Catherine M. Argue, all of Hampton; eight brothers, Thomas of Somersworth, James of Rollinsord, Daniel of Rochester, Mich., David of Silver Spring, Md., Peter of Pulaski, Va., Michael of Cambridge, Mass., Christopher of Lawrence, Mass. and Timothy of Concord; three sisters, Catherine Fountain of Duxbury, Mass., Rosemary Argue of Manchester, Maureen Ebner of Plymouth; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

ARGUE - John C. Argue, 46, of Hampton, died April 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Nona V. (Sessions) Bolstridge Ramsey

SOMERSWORTH - Nona V. (Sessions) Bolstridge Ramsey, 75, wife of Herbert Ramsey, of Pinecrest Drive, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, April 6, 2001 after a period of failing health.

Born August 25, 1925, in Adamstown, New South Wales, Australia, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Nona (Vinette) Sessions.

She had worked as a fancy stitcher in local shoe shops. She was a strong, hardworking and courageous women who loved and was loved by her family and friends.

Besides her husband of Somersworth, survivors include two sons, Burns H. Bolstridge of Somersworth and Kenneth Bolstridge of Biddeford, Maine; four daughters, Niki S. Cook of Somersworth, Dawn Sklarski of Madbury, Doreen Stern of Newington, and Samantha R. Bolstridge of Ohio; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

RAMSEY - Nona V. (Sessions) Bolstridge Ramsey, 75, of Pinecrest Drive, Somersworth, passed away peacefully in her sleep April 6, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., Monday, at the Chapel.
