Georgia Goss Drew

MADBURY - Georgia Goss Drew died Friday night, April 13, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a long and well-fought battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 16, 1929, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Constance (Woodworth) and C. Lane Goss of Worcester, Mass., and Madbury.

A graduate of Bancroft School in Worcester, Mass., and the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass., she was a fourth-generation graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Her great-grandmother, Mary Parker (Woodworth), in 1870 was the first New Hampshire woman to graduate from a four-year college and was also the first woman to serve on the Concord, N.H., School Board.

She had been on the board of the Strafford County (NH) Health Association, and at the time of her death was an overseer of Walnut Hill School and was also a Madbury town officer. She had been a board member and vice-president of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the state of New Hampshire, where she had been a longtime house manager of its historic property in Portsmouth, the Moffatt-Ladd House.

She was the widow of Frederick E. Drew of Madbury and Barrington, N.H. She was predeceased by her son, David Goss McCaig, and her daughter, Holly Armitage.

She was previously married to Robert McCaig of Portland, Ore., and to Perley (Peter) E. Armitage Jr. of Gonic, N.H. She also leaves her companion of recent years, Alfred L. Moseley of Barrington, N.H.

Survivors include her brother, Lane Woodworth Goss of North Andover, Mass.; three nephews, Edward Woodworth Goss of Wellesley, Mass., Charles Lane Goss II of Andover, Mass., and Philip Johnston Goss of North Andover, Mass.; an aunt, Mary Woodworth Sawyer of Durham; and cousins, Jenifer D'Arcy of Durham, Susan D'Arcy Schultz of New York City, Sally Woodworth Gallagher of Concord, N.H., and Deborah Woodworth Edgar of Concord, Mass.; two great-nephews, William Woodworth Goss and Edward Woodworth Goss Jr.; and three great-nieces, Elizabeth Jane Goss and Sarah Staley Goss, both of Wellesley, Mass., and Katharine Ames Goss of Hamilton, Mass.

DREW - Georgia Goss Drew, of Madbury, N.H., died April 13, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2001, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Walnut Hill School, 12 Highland St., Natick, MA 01760, or to the Moffatt-Ladd House, 135 Market St., Portsmouth, NH 03801-3730. The Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, assisted with the arrangements.

Dorothy I. Nye

BARRE, Mass. - Dorothy I. Nye, 82, of 22 Washburn Road, formerly of 103 El Paso St., Springfield, died on Friday, April 13, 2001, at home after an illness.

Born in New Britain, Conn., she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Nelson) Coughlin. She was a graduate of Chicopee High School and lived in Springfield from 1954 to 1998. She moved to York Harbor, Maine, in 1998 for two years before moving to Barre in January 2001.

She was a member of the East Congregational Church in East Springfield, Mass. She was very active in the church as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Women's Guild.

She formed the Wacky Widows Club of Springfield.

She was the wife of the late Richard E. Nye, who died in 1981.

Survivors include two sons Edward N. Nye of York, Maine, and Richard E. Nye of Tully, N.Y., and a daughter, Cheryl McKie of York Beach, Maine; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

NYE - Dorothy I. Nye, of Barre, Mass., died April 13, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at East Congregational Church in Springfield, Mass. In her memory, donations may be made to the U-Mass Memorial Hospice, 43 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609. Pillsbury Funeral Home, 96 South Barre Road, Barre, MA, 01105, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles D. Saurman

NEWMARKET - Charles D. Saurman, 61, of Schanda Drive, died April 16, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare, after a courageously long battle with cancer.

Born July 10, 1939, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Betton) Saurman of Rye. Raised in Portsmouth, he was a 1959 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He lived in Wilmington, N.C., for eight years and the Seacoast area for 20 years before moving to Newmarket 13 years ago.

For many years he was a store manager with Kings Department Stores and then worked for Cryans Plumbing and Heating and Standard Plumbing and Heating before becoming a part owner and manager of Arjay's Ace Hardware in Exeter.

While living in Wilmington, he was active in the PTA and Little League.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife of 20 years, Sheila (Katze) Saurman of Newmarket; one son, Jeffrey Saurman and his wife, Susan, of Portsmouth; two daughters, Beth Julsaint and her husband, Charles, of Arlington, Texas, and Brooke White and her husband, John, of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Joshua Saurman of Portsmouth and Jacob Julsaint, Christiana Julsaint and Samantha Julsaint, all of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Paulette and her husband, Ted, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Denise Saurman of Eliot, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

SAURMAN - Charles D. Saurman, 61, of Newmarket, died April 16, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday from St. Mary's Church, Main Street, Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Rye. Rather than flowers, memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Sylvia B. Moulton

HAMPTON - Sylvia B. Moulton, 76, of 16 Naves Road, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Epping on Feb. 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Maurice F. and Helen (Caraway) Brown.

She was a graduate of Epping High School and Hesser Business College.

She served the town of Hampton in several positions, starting in 1968 with the Hampton Police Department as a part-time secretary and policewoman. In 1974, she began employment as a full-time secretary for the Hampton Fire Department, and from 1975 to 1982 she held the position of clerk and dispatcher for the Hampton Police Department. She retired from the police department in 1984 as a part-time policewoman.

After serving 10 years at the Hampton District Court, where she worked as an administrator of small claims, she retired in 1994.

She resided in Hampton for 35 years, having come from Epping. She served as organist for the Congregational Church in Epping and the First Baptist Church of Hampton and was a substitute organist at many area churches for many years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton and a member of both its choir and its bell choir. She was also a member of Tide Mill Chapter #67 O.E.S. of Hampton.

Family members include six children, Wanda Brower of North Smithfield, R.I., Donna Michael of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sue Valiquet of Exeter, Walter Moulton Jr. of Tehachapi, Calif., Peter Moulton of Hampton, and Kim Moulton of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Maurice Brown Jr. of Hampton; a cousin, Eleanor Robinson; and nieces and nephews.

A brother, Lewis W. Brown, who died in 1997, predeceased her.

MOULTON - Sylvia B. Moulton, 76, of 16 Naves Road, Hampton, died April 17, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Epping. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the University of Texas, c/o Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 297153, Houston, TX 77297.

Ethel M. Hilton

DOVER - Ethel M. Hilton, 93, formerly of Cape Neddick, Maine, died April 13, 2001, at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Hilton, in Dover.

Born July 15, 1907, in Pawtucket, R.I., she was a daughter of James and Maude Jollie Copp. She graduated from the Pawtucket, R.I., High School in 1924 and attended Brown University in Providence.

She had been employed as a private secretary at Westcott, Slade and Balcom of Providence for 20 years. She had been a member of the Wells Extension, the Congregational Church in Wells, the Wells Historical Society and the Bauneg Beg Grange in North Berwick.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford M. Hilton, in 1989; her sister Lillian McGrane in 2000; and her sister Muriel Copp in 1999.

Surviving are a son, John C. Hilton of South Berwick, Maine; two daughters, Mrs. James (Linda) Fisk of Eliot, Maine, and Nancy E. Hilton of Dover, N.H.; two grandchildren; and a friend and companion for many years, Audrey C. Bell.

Robert B. Winn

SANBORNVILLE, N.H. - Robert B. Winn, 82, son of the late William and Ethel (Dore) Winn, died on Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, while receiving hospice care at the home of dear friends Vincent and Gloria Brooks. Born in Portsmouth on Feb. 27, 1919, he attended Portsmouth High School. After graduating in 1938, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

In 1942 he married Lena Stevens of Packers Falls, Durham, N.H., to whom he was devoted for 52 years until her death in 1994. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, working on the pipeline of supplies to Russia through Iran. After the war he worked as a district sales manager for Canada Dry.

He received a B.A. in psychology from UNH in 1953 and began a long career in employment counseling and rehabilitation work. He worked for the states of Maine and New Hampshire in their departments of vocational rehabilitation. While working for the District of Columbia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in 1970, he was awarded a certificate of appreciation for the "number-one hands-on placement of mentally and physically disabled persons" for places over 100,000 population in the U.S. He was a passionate advocate for the poor and disadvantaged all of his life and was proud of his many achievements for their benefit.

He is survived by his brother, Alden Winn of Durham; a nephew, Christopher Winn of North Berwick, Maine; a niece, Kathleen Jackson of Dunedin, Fla.; a grandniece, Nicole Winn of Seattle, Wash.; a grandnephew, Jonathan Winn; and a great-grandniece, Victoria Winn of San Diego, Calif.

WHITE - George R. White Sr., 58, of 5300 W. Memorial, Oklahoma City, Okla., died April 12, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the breast cancer research association of your choice.

Lauren Eleanor Smith

WINDHAM, Maine - Lauren Eleanor Smith, the 11-month-old daughter of Daniel Q. and Lisa A. Reynolds Smith of Evergreen Lane, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at a Portland hospital. She was also born in Portland.

She and her family were members of the Windham Hill United Church of Christ.

Her paternal grandparents, Daniel Q. and Barbara E. Smith of North Hampton, N.H., predeceased her.

Survivors include her parents, Daniel Q. and Lisa A. Reynolds Smith of Windham; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Linda Reynolds of Kensington, N.H.; two aunts, Lorrie Darwin of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Karen Kuntz of Stratham, N.H.; and one uncle, Keith Reynolds of Salisbury, Mass.

SMITH - Lauren Eleanor Smith, 11-month-old daughter of Daniel Q. and Lisa A. Reynolds Smith of Evergreen Lane, Windham, Maine, died April 16, 2001. There are no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ, Windham Center Road, Windham. The Rev. Dr. William D. Howden will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook, Maine. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Pseudo-Obstruction and Hirshbrungs Society, 158 Pleasant St., North Andover, MA 01845. Arrangements are by Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.

George R. White Sr.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - George R. White Sr., 58, widower of Joyce (Barry) White, of 5300 W. Memorial, died on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Nov. 11, 1942, the son of the late Frank and Mildred (Laderbush) White.

He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include two sons, George R. White Jr. of Massachusetts and Jeffrey B. White of Pleasanton, Calif.; two brothers, Robert White of North Reading, Mass., and Donald White of Portsmouth; one sister, Francis Baker of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

JACKSON - Patrick John Jackson, 68, of Central Road, Rye, died March 22, 2001. A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m. at West Epping Quaker Meeting. Reception to follow at Tributary Farm, Blake Road, Epping. For directions please call 778-1220. ELLIS - Elizabeth (Hunt) Halliday Ellis of Langdon Place, Exeter, formerly of North Hampton, died Jan. 11, 2001. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Sunday, April 29, at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Billie Joanne Moulton

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held for Billie Joanne Moulton on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

The service was officiated by the Revs. Robert Wing and Melvin White. Words of remembrance were spoken by her children and other family members. In attendance were friends, family and close friends from Meetinghouse Village in Kittery where she had enjoyed living for a number of years. Mrs. Beth Wing offered several solo performances and accompanied the service on the organ.

Pallbearers included her sons Russell Belleville, Frank Belleville, and Dennis Belleville, as well as her sons-in-law Charles White, Jeremy Carlson and Stephen McCarthy.

The service continued at Orchard Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Wing offering words of committal. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Isoline Irma Fernald

ELIOT, Maine - A memorial service was held for Isoline Irma Fernald on April 12, 2001, at the Blaisdell-Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot.

The service was officiated by the Rev. William Gardei with kind words of remembrance offered by Dennis Bezanson, with whom Irma spent time while she was at the Homestead in Kittery.

In attendance were family, friends, representatives of the Homestead in Kittery, and representatives from the Eliot Town Hall. Pallbearers were Glen Fernald, Michael Hoyt, Thomas Hoyt, Dana Hoyt, Brian Hoyt and Jay Muzeroll.

The service concluded with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Friends and family gathered at the home of Walter and Mildred Hoyt for a time of remembrance and sharing. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Mildred A. Hall

HAMPTON - Mildred A. Hall, 95, of 340 Lafayette Road, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Methuen, Mass., May 29, 1905, the daughter of the late Theodore and Anna (Paul) Kiessling and was a graduate of Methuen High School with the Class of 1923.

She and her husband, the late Frederick W. Hall, who died in 1979, owned and operated the former Greystone Hotel at Hampton Beach and were also the proprietors of Jackie's Travel Agency.

She was a resident of Hampton since 1948, coming from Portsmouth and Methuen. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, Tide Mill Chapter No. 67 O.E.S. of Hampton and had been a longtime volunteer for R.S.V.P.

Family members include one daughter, Pauline R. O'Brien of Hampton with whom she resided; one son, Frederick W. Hall Jr. of Kittery, Maine; six grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Eunice Mae McKenna

PORTSMOUTH - Eunice Mae McKenna, 84, formerly of 188 Lincoln Ave., passed away Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre after a long period of failing health.

Born in Portsmouth on April 29, 1916, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Sullivan) Watkins and was a lifelong resident here.

She was employed at the Portsmouth Junior High School and for many years worked at Tober's Apparel in downtown Portsmouth.

She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Women's Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Daughters of America.

The widow of Louis P. McKenna, who died in 1999, she is survived by one son, Paul McKenna and his wife, Susan, of Dover; two grandchildren, Timothy McKenna and Theresa McKenna of Dover; two sisters, Mabel Ogdon and Mary Bassett, both of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ellen McGinnis, and four brothers, Charles Watkins, Robert Watkins, James Watkins and Ormon Watkins.

McKENNA - Eunice M. McKenna, 84, of 188 Lincoln Ave., Portsmouth, died April 20, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Monday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Sunday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.
