Bea W. Craig

PORTSMOUTH - Bea W. Craig, of Portsmouth, formerly of Rochester, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.

Born May 18, 1919, in Berlin, N.H., she was the daughter of Eric Oleson Holt and Olava Valstead, who immigrated from Norway to New Hampshire in 1911.

She contributed to all types of community activities and organizations, including the American Red Cross, Rochester Historical Society and of course, her main love was the work she performed at Foster's Daily Democrat. After her retirement from Foster's, she was honored to receive the Citizen of the Year award in 1984, for her outstanding contribution to her community.

She treasured her independence and chose to become a single parent of a set of twins at the age of 25. Following five years in a sanitarium, from age 18 to 23, she was sick with tuberculosis following her mother's death from the same disease when Bea was 14 years old. This happened following the deaths of her sister and two brothers early in their lives from separate tragedies.

She came to the Rochester area with her brother, Howard Holt, and settled in East Rochester to care for her father and raise her two children. She found great pleasure in home teaching and raising her children by securing extra workbooks and posing as a teacher with a mail-order educational supplier. All of her efforts paid off and she was proud of her children's accomplishments.

She later became even more involved in her work and the community. She unselfishly dedicated herself and her time performing volunteer work with dedication and admiration.

She graduated from McIntosh College in 1959 and worked for Kendall Insurance until 1970. She then began working part-time at Foster's Daily Democrat Rochester Bureau. This quickly became a full-time job that she treasured, and which gave her purpose and recognition, becoming known as B-Z-B. She traveled around in her Volkswagen at all hours of the day and night. She could be seen at Dunkin' Donuts in the wee hours of the morning after having completed a story.

Traveling outside of Rochester was rare, so she thoroughly enjoyed her trip to her parent's country of Norway with her son as a 65th birthday present, and her earlier trip to Guatemala.

After her retirement in 1984, she continued to keep herself busy. She resided at Rochester East, where she would organize bingo and card games for the other residents. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, latch hook or making tabletop doilies for friends and family

In 1994 she moved to Portsmouth where her daughter cared for her until she passed away peacefully at home from heart failure following a week of rapidly declining health, due to complications of a fall on Friday, April 13. She fought a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, having lost a lung to TB in her early 20s. She also suffered from Alzheimer's disease for more than eight years.

She will be remembered for her hard work, her love of life and God, and her great sense of offbeat and sometimes shocking humor. Her love for education, her work as a photographer and newswoman, as well as her love for the city of Rochester, will live on through the Bea Craig Scholarship, which is in the process of becoming established. Anyone interested in becoming involved in the planning process may e-mail at:

www.BeatriceWCraig@aol.com.

Her family includes her twin children, Dr. Erik Craig of Santa Fe, N.M., and Allison Oleson of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Liane Fremeau of Macon, Ga., Robert Fremeau and David Fremeau of Portsmouth; and three wonderful great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Howard Holt, both parents and three siblings.

Calling hours will be held at the Edgerly Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, on Monday, April 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Beatrice basked in the love that Rochester showed her and would enjoy a celebration complete with music, flowers, and words of love from friends, old and new. The family would welcome and appreciate anyone who would like to speak at the funeral as part of the celebration. The family may be reached at 427-0058.
