Lester C. Kellenbeck

NORTH HAMPTON - Mr. Lester C. Kellenbeck, 71, husband of Helen I. (Kasper) Kellenbeck, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1929, in Portsmouth, the son of the late George L. and Mabel E. (Loukx) Kellenbeck.

He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1947, and attended McIntosh College for two years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a supervisor in the supply department, retiring after 33 years. He then was employed at the Shaw's Supermarket on Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, for 12 years.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM, of Portsmouth; the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dover; the N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; and the Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord.

He was co-captain of the Shriner's color guard; president of the Legion of Honor; president of the Portsmouth Shrine Club; and had been very active in all the Masonic organizations. He was a member and past patron of the Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star, in Portsmouth.

He was a loving family man and enjoyed his grandchildren very much. He also enjoyed traveling, boats and woodworking.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Leslie McIver and her husband, Neil, of Plymouth, N.H.; three grandchildren, Deven McIver and his wife, Ingrid, of Ashland, N.H.; Katie Moulding and her husband, Chris, of Taunton, Mass.; and Colin McIver of Plymouth; and one great-grandson, Alexander Moulding of Taunton.

KELLENBECK - Mr. Lester C. Kellenbeck, 71, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, North Hampton, died April 28, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with O.E.S. services by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 at 5:30 p.m. at the chapel, followed by Masonic services by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. at the chapel. Donations in memory of Mr. Kellenbeck may be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Irene B. Rose

PORTSMOUTH - Irene B. Rose, widow of William R. Rose, of Portsmouth, died on Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Hampton, daughter of the late William and Georgie (Hook) Blake.

She graduated from what was then Keene Normal School. She taught three years in a rural school in Goffstown, N.H., and three years in Waltham, Mass., where she taught seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade English and served as chairman of the English department.

She spent one summer in Europe attending seminars at the Sorbonne, the University of Rome, the University of Munich and the University of London.

She served on the board of the Portsmouth Women's Asylum, the oldest charity organization in New Hampshire. For 10 years she was chairman of the Economy Shop of St. John's Church, where she was a communicant for more than 50 years. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

ROSE - Irene B. Rose of Portsmouth died Monday, March 19, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, at High Street Cemetery, Hampton. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William Richard Rose and Irene Blake Rose Scholarship Fund, c/o St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

John George Stringos Jr.

ROCHESTER - John George Stringos Jr. died unexpectedly in his sleep on the night of April 24, 2001. Born March 6, 1947, in Winchester, Mass., he was a son of John Stringos Sr. and Marion (Brooks) Stringos. The family moved to Somerville, Mass., where he attended school, graduating from Somerville High School.

He served as a sergeant during the Vietnam War in Company B, 196th Infantry, American Division. He earned nine medals in the service of his country. Some of the medals were: Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation with V device, National Defense Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

On Sept. 9, 1972, he married Christine Hines in Belmont, Mass. They lived in the Waltham and Lowell, Mass., areas before moving to southern Maine and Rochester.

He was employed by the Department of Defense Police, working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

His hobbies included skydiving, photography and collecting military and law enforcement artifacts.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a certified firearms instructor. He was a member of the American Legion in York, Maine, and the Blue Knights of Maine, Chapter V.

He is survived by his former wife, Christine, of York, Maine; a stepdaughter, Wendy Van Dooren of Rochester; a sister, Jewel of Amesbury, Mass.; a brother, Richard Daigle of Tempe, Ariz.; a cousin, James Stringos of York, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

A gathering was held in his honor on Sunday, April 29, 2001, at 209 Milton Road, Lot 110, in Rochester, which included fellowship, eulogy and prayer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Blue Knights of Maine, Chapter V, for the Toys for Tots program.

Aner M. (Bates) Walters

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Aner M. (Bates) Walters, 91, of 47 Blake St., Presque Isle, Maine, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, Portsmouth, on Monday. The Rev. Gordon Allen officiated.

Burial was in the Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services performed by Allen.

Bearers were Crystal Nelson, Jessica Nelson, Lawrence Hudson, Steven Chasses Jr., Ralph Littlefield and Tanya Harris.

Beverly Ann (Atkins) Roberts

KITTERY, Maine - Beverly Ann (Atkins) Roberts, 65, of 45 Eliot Road, and formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Sunday, April 29, at her home.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., on July 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Frederick W. and Loretta B. (Dennis) Atkins.

She grew up in Rocks Village, Haverhill, and graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1954. She was a former member of the Second Baptist Church in Rocks Village, where she taught Sunday School for many years until moving with her husband and children to Kittery in 1974. She was also a member of the Round Table Club of Rocks Village.

She was a devoted wife for 40 years to her husband, Darrell. She enjoyed being a homemaker and a mother. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading and raising plants.

She was preceded in death by her son, Andrew, who died in infancy.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell C. Roberts; two daughters, Darlene Roberts of Dover, and Andrea (Mrs. Richard) Wirth of Kittery; five grandchildren, Sherri Ann, Stefani Lynn, Kelsey Loretta, Jacob Darrell and Mikayla Ruth; and several cousins.

ROBERTS - Beverly Ann (Atkins) Roberts, 65, of Kittery, Maine, died Sunday, April 29, 2001. Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Eliot Baptist Church in Eliot, Maine. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill, Mass. Another funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday in Haverhill. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eliot Baptist Church, 238 Dow Highway (Rte. 236), Eliot, ME 03903.

Arline B. (Burgess) Grant

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Arline B. (Burgess) Grant, 80, of Blossom Street, were held on Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by her son, Charles B. Grant.

Burial was in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Bearers were Charles B. Grant, Gary J. Grant, Charlotte E. Grant, Tim Harned, Mark Burgess and Jim Marchese.

Gregory Bret Freitag

YORK, Maine - Gregory Bret Freitag, 42, of York Street, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a two-year battle with cancer.

Born April 27, 1959, in Louisville, Ky., he was a son of Rudolph E. and Mary K. (Bret) Freitag and was a 1977 graduate of York High School.

He was a self-employed mason. He enjoyed playing the guitar, photography, playing pool and going camping. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and walking the beach with Lily, his dog.

He was a member of St. Christopher Church and a member of the Elks in York.

Survivors include his parents of York Harbor; his daughters, Kaitlyn and Annaliese, and their mother, JoAnn of York; a sister, Lisa, and her husband, Bill Ranauro, and their children, Emily and Daniel, all of Walpole; a brother, Kurt, and his wife, Michele Freitag, and their sons, Michael, Thomas and John Paul, all of York; and his dear friend and companion, Debbie Marble of York.

FREITAG - Gregory B. Freitag of York, Maine, died April 27, 2001, in Boston. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2001, at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be at a later date in the First Parish Cemetery, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a trust fund for his children, being established at the Maine Bank and Trust in York. Arrangements are by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Mark Edward Keiran

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. - Mark Edward Keiran, 44, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Grand County, Colo., the result of an automobile accident.

Born Oct. 15, 1956, in Boston, Mass., he was a son of Alan J. and Barbara A. (Skillings) Keiran. He was a 1974 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover. He attended one year of college at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1980 he moved to Boulder. Most recently he moved to Kremling from Frisco, Colo.

He worked as an independent, self-employed carpenter.

He is survived by his parents of Longmont, Colo.; his daughter, Kyle Keiran of Frisco; his brothers, Michael (Brenda) Keiran, of Kingston, Alan (Mary Jane) Keiran, of Lakeville, Minn., and Scott (Maureen) Keiran, of Rowley, Mass.; his sisters, Mary (Steve) Scott, of Longmont, Chris (Greg) Wilson, of Niwot, and Carol (Saud) Karum, of Niwot; and several nieces and nephews.

KEIRAN - Mark Edward Keiran, 44, of Summit County, Colo., died April 26, 2001. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Howe Mortuary Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Brian Morrow as celebrant. Services will conclude at the church with cremation to follow. Memorial contributions are requested to the O.U.R. Center, c/o Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, CO 80501.

Roland T. Barnaby

HAMPTON - Roland T. Barnaby, 88, of 16 Thorwald Ave., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood after a lengthy illness.

Born in Greenland on Jan. 12, 1913, he was a son of the late Lewis and Charlotte (Thompson) Barnaby.

He worked as a carpenter for contractors in the Seacoast area for many years. He also was employed by Hampton Motors for several years and by the town of Hampton as a part-time police officer from 1960 to 1978.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton and had resided here since 1928, having come from Stratham.

He was the husband of Ina H. (Taylor) Barnaby; they would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on May 11.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Roland T. Barnaby and his wife, Linda, of Portsmouth; two daughters, Lynda A. Berry of Newport, N.C., and Charlotte "Peppa" Ring and her husband, Jay, of Hampton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lewis Barnaby of Seabrook; two sisters, Priscilla Berry of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Marilyn Huber of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers and four sisters predeceased him.

BARNABY - Roland T. Barnaby, 88, of 16 Thorwald Ave., Hampton, died April 18, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home Residents Fund, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Patricia Wiley

LOWELL, Mass. - A graveside committal service and burial for Patricia Wiley, who died Thursday, April 26, 2001, were held Monday at Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Maine. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church, officiated. Military honors were provided by members of the New Hampshire Air National Guard. The American flag was presented to her sister, Betty Chapman. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

Dorothy W. G. Nason

DOVER - Dorothy Wilson Greenaway Nason, 88, of Langdon Place, 60 Middle Road, formerly of Nute Road, and a winter resident of North Port, Fla., and Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., died April 26, 2001, at home with her children.

Born April 26, 1913, in Dover, she was a daughter of Robert W. and Annie (Stearns) Greenaway. She graduated from Dover High School in 1931, attended UNH and graduated from Posse Nissen College in Boston in 1935. She taught for two years at Laconia State School before marrying her high school sweetheart, the late Donald B. Nason, also of Dover, in 1937. They lived in New Jersey; Cincinnati, Ohio; Michigan; Pennsylvania; New York; and Amherst, N.H.

She spent her life supporting her husband's career, raising her children, volunteering to help others and making the world a better place than she found it. A physical therapist, she volunteered at the Percy Jones Veterans Rehab facility in Battle Creek, Mich., during World War II. She was active in many environmental concerns, especially water and forest conservation, having made a presentation before the N.H. state Legislature on behalf of the Amherst Water Conservation District. Her efforts also extended to church, historical and genealogical research and study.

She was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Northam Colonists, Piscataqua Pioneers, League of Women Voters, DAR (Margery Sullivan Chapter), Dover Women's Club, UNH Alumni Association, Strafford County and N.H. Society of Genealogists, U.S. Power Squadron, Audubon Society, Strafford Three Rivers Conservancy, Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Auxiliary and the Manning Family Association. In addition to her volunteering, she enjoyed boating, nature, playing bridge and maintaining active correspondence with family, friends and acquaintances around the world. She had an insatiable curiosity about the people and world around her.

She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 55 years, Donald Biederman Nason, and her sister, Marjorie Holmes. Survivors include a son, Robert Greenaway Nason of Green Bay, Wis.; a daughter, Judith Ann Nason Jacobs of North Port, Fla.; a sister, Phyllis Waldron of Kennebunk, Maine; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. She included all the step-grandchildren and -great-grandchildren as her own.

NASON - Dorothy Wilson Greenaway Nason, 88, of Langdon Place, Dover, died April 26, 2001. The family will be available from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, in the Dallas Room at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, at the corner of Locust and Hale streets, Dover, followed by a memorial service celebrating her life at 11 a.m., at the church. There also will be a service at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Langdon Place of Dover, 60 Middle Road, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Dover, or The Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements are under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.

Aura Widen

RYE - Aura (Clark) Widen, 77, of 150 Mill Lane, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at her home.

She was the wife of former Rye harbormaster and lobster fisherman John O. Widen. They had resided in Rye Harbor for over 54 years.

She was born in Portsmouth on June 22, 1923, a daughter of the late William and Mary (Rowe) Clark.

She spent her childhood on Wentworth Street in Portsmouth's South End, where she attended Haven School and then attended Portsmouth High School.

She was the former owner of Ray's Seafood Restaurant in Rye for over 10 years.

She was a passionate and avid doll collector, and the joy of her life was being with her family. Her other interests were toll painting and crocheting.

Besides her husband of 56 years, survivors include two daughters, Susan Widen Sanchez of Tampa, Fla., and Judith Ann Munroe of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Andrew J. Widen of Rye; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters.

WIDEN - Aura (Clark) Widen, 77, of 150 Mill Lane, Rye, died April 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

ROMANKO - Patricia Nerina Quirk Romanko, 70, of Parma, Idaho, formerly of Portsmouth, died Nov. 18, 2000. An open house will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 4, at Germaine Brigham's home, 22 Locke Road, New Castle. Friends are invited. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the St. Catherine of Siena Church, Portsmouth. Interment will be in South Cemetery, in Portsmouth. Children's charities, such as the Special Olympics and the Idaho Youth Ranch, were among her favorites. It was her wish that donations be made to charitable foundations in lieu of flowers. Contributions may be made to Patricia Romanko Public Library, P.O. Box 307, Parma, ID 83660.
