Ronald Stanley Ohina

DAVIE, Fla. - Ronald Stanley Ohina, 55, died on April 11, 2001, at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Fla., after a long illness. Born April 18, 1945, in Kittery, Maine, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ohina of Eliot, Maine.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 13 years while residing in Eliot. He relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 1981, where he operated a landscaping business.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lyle Ohina, of Davie; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Lisa Ohina, of Coral Springs, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Carlos Septien, and a granddaughter, Paige Septien, of Miramar, Fla.; a sister, Judi Hammett, of Amherst, Va.; a brother, Wayne Ohina, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; two aunts, Jen Ohina and Sophia Strybuc, of South Attleboro, Mass.; two nieces; and a nephew.

A memorial service was held in Ft. Lauderdale on April 14. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Moore of Eliot, lifelong friends of Mr. Ohina, are extended sincere gratitude for their presence and support and for Mr. Moore's participation in the eulogy.

Sharon Elizabeth Rynard

KITTERY, Maine - Sharon Elizabeth Rynard, 40, of Rice Avenue, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Veterans Hospital in Togus, Maine, after a long illness.

Born in Westfield, Mass., Oct. 27, 1960, she was the daughter of Edward and Priscilla (Day) Puza. She attended local schools and graduated as the first woman to attend and graduated Westfield Vocational School, until her enrollment at an all-boys school.

After graduation she enlisted in the United States Navy, making service to her country a career. Serving as a personnel officer, she was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Reading, Pa., among other places. She was a proud veteran of the Persian Gulf War, stationed in the Persian Gulf theater during the war. She retired from military service in 1998.

She and her husband Harry Rynard made their home in Kittery with their children. She also worked on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at the pizza restaurant for a time after her retirement.

She very much enjoyed her volunteer activities. She served as a member and historian of the American Legion Post No. 6 in Portsmouth, N.H., and as a member and quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in York. She will be remembered by all for her enjoyment of people and her service to all.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Rynard, of Kittery; her daughters, Erica Robbins of Dover, N.H., and Telishia Rynard of Kittery; a granddaughter, Samantha of Dover; her stepmother, Barbara Puza of Westfield, Mass.; her sisters, Liane Hartman of Southampton, Mass.; Candice Kohlman of Mattapoisett, Mass.; Lori Costello of Westfield, Mass.; Perri Taylor of East Hampton, Mass.; and Carol Puza of Chicopee, Mass.; her brothers, David Puza of Stamford, Conn., and John Puza of Westfield, Mass.; and an aunt and uncle with whom she spent much of her teen-age years, Richard and Cynthia Puza of Westfield, Mass.

RYNARD - Sharon Elizabeth Rynard, 40, of Rice Avenue in Kittery, Maine, died May 1, 2001. A funeral will be held on Friday at 4 p.m., from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/ U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to the funeral at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held on Thursday, May 10, at 9 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, Mass. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made in her memory to the Kittery Lions Club, P.O. Box 104, Kittery, ME 03904; or to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Christina B. Torrey

HAMPTON - The funeral for Christina "Tina" Bonsey Torrey, 70, of 1 Robie St., was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, and the Rev. Daniel J. Sinibaldi, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Woodsville, were the celebrants. Readings were offered by the Rev. J.D. Minerella, pastor of the Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Hampton, and the Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, Maine.

Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Patrick Surette offered the Prayer of the Faithful. Cynthia Barrett offered a special poem that she wrote, and special music was offered by Leo and Sherry Bonsey. Gerald Bonsey offered words of remembrance.

Pallbearers were Richard Barrett Sr., Richard Barrett Jr., Cynthia Barrett, Patrick Surette, Jerry Hazelton and Sean Danico.

The Rev. James Robichaud, pastor of St. Thomas Church in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, will conduct the Rite of Committal in the Basset Yard Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft, on May 24 at 11 a.m.

Jacqueline P. Weijenhoven

EXETER - Jacqueline P. Weijenhoven, 34, of High Street, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at her home.

Born Nov. 4, 1966, in Rotterdam, Holland, she was the daughter of Klaas and Jozina (Van Den Berg) Weijenhoven.

She had resided in Exeter for the past two years. She was formerly of Portland, Ore.; Trinidad; and Holland.

She was an active committee member of Evening with the Arts. She was also on the Timberlane Daycare Parents Committee.

She is survived by her husband of 10 years, David C. Pompel of Exeter; her son, David Max Pompel of Exeter; her parents of Bodegraven, Holland; one sister, Yvonne Weijenhoven of Leiden, Holland; two brothers, Ruud Weijenhoven of Bodegraven, and Jeroen Weijenhoven of Gouda, Holland; and two nieces.

WEIJENHOVEN - Jacqueline P. Weijenhoven, 34, of High Street, Exeter, died April 28, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Portsmouth (South Church), 292 State St. Burial will be in Pacific Grove, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Francis J. Donahue Sr.

SHAPLEIGH, Maine - The funeral for Francis J. Donahue Sr., 74, of Shapleigh, formerly of North Hampton, N.H., was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, N.H. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Judith Kish was organist and pianist. James White was cantor and soloist. Salvatore DeVincenzo was the altar server.

The placing of the pall and placement of Christian symbols on the casket were by Mr. Donahue's six children, Francis J. Donahue Jr., Michael J. Donahue, Marc Donahue, Adele Polizzotti, Elizabeth Jean Brown and Cheryl Brown. Jackie Donahue and Kelsey Donahue offered the readings and Phil Brown offered the Prayer of the Faithful. Alison Donahue and Cheryl Donahue presented the gifts to the altar.

Eucharistic ministers were Jackie and Erin Donahue. Special music was provide by Scott and Lauren Brown with Justin Yim on guitar. Words of remembrance were offered by Francis J. Donahue Jr.

Burial followed in the Center Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Lavigne. Pallbearers were Francis J. Donahue Jr., Michael Donahue, Marc Donahue, Robert Polizzotti, Scott Brown, Phillip Brown, Jonathan Donahue, Chris Brown, Kyle Donahue and Bob Polizzotti. The U.S. flag, representing Mr. Donahue's service to his country, was presented to his daughter Adele M. Polizzotti.

Elizabeth A. Brickley

WAYNESBORO, Va. - Elizabeth Noble "Betty" Brickley, 83, of Waynesboro, and formerly of Durham, N.H., Pocantico Hills, N.Y., and Bronxville, N.Y., died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Augusta Medical Center, Fisherville, Va., after a period of failing health.

Born Nov. 7, 1917, in New Milford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Clement and "Blossom" Noble.

She was a graduate of New Milford High School and went on to join the U.S. Marine Corps where she attained the rank of first lieutenant and became one of the first women Marine officers serving during World War II.

She was the devoted wife of the late John T. Brickley.

Her interests included sports of all kinds, working at local libraries, and her family and friends.

She will be remembered for her sparkling brown eyes and smiles, her positive attitude, and her love of family and country.

She was predeceased by one brother, John Noble.

She is survived by her loving sons and daughters-in-law, John and Kathy Brickley of Hampton, N.H.; Stephen and Linda Brickley of Waynesboro; and Matthew Brickley and his fiancee, Barbara Bauknight, of Columbia, S.C.; and four devoted grandchildren, Taylor, Keith and Ryan Brickley of Waynesboro, and Sarah Brickley of Hampton, N.H.

She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an arthritis charity of your choice.

Ruth Price Silva

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service for Ruth Price Silva will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the Fellowship Hall of Green Acre Baha'i School in Eliot, Maine. She died on March 1, 2001.

She was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, and member of the Portsmouth Baha'i community.

Calvin W. Buckman

KITTERY, Maine - Calvin Warren Buckman, 83, of Rogers Road, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on June 21, 1917, he was the son of William and Elizabeth Buckman, and attended local schools.

He was married to Dorothy (Moulton) Buckman for more than 61 years.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He was retired as a supervisor for Public Service of New Hampshire. He was a member of the Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery and the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as trading and fixing lawn mowers and snowblowers.

He is survived by his loving wife and two nieces, Sylvia Kinne of Thornton, N.H., and Clarience LaFlamme of Berlin, N.H.

BUCKMAN - Calvin W. Buckman, 83, of Rogers Road in Kittery, Maine, died May 2, 2001, at York Hospital. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, Maine. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to The Church at Spruce Creek, Wilson Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Helen Hanson

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Helen Hanson, 82, who died April 29, 2001, at the Homestead Nursing Home were held Wednesday morning at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church, conducted services. A graveside committal service and burial followed in Moss Side Cemetery, Cumberland, Maine, with the Rev. Avery reciting committal prayers.

Pallbearers were Keith Hanson, Scott Hanson, Allen Hanson, Chris Hanson, Warren Hanson, Rick Sawyer and Rob Blaisdell.

Maryann Stewart

WESTBROOK, Maine - Maryann Stewart, 65, of Woodmont Street, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a period of failing health.

Born April 1, 1936, in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Lawrence and Helen (Kraft) Stewart.

She grew up in Kittery until her early teens, moving to Pineland where she spent much of her adult life.

Remembered for her fun-loving sense of humor, she will be missed by those who loved and cared for her most of her life. She was very fortunate to have spent the last part of her life with wonderful people who provided excellent care at Community Partners on Woodmont Street in Westbrook. Her family will miss her determined spirit and love of life.

She is survived by her father and stepmother, Lawrence and Ann Stewart of Kittery; her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Tony Brunetta of Portsmouth, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her Nana, Adeline Stewart, whom she enjoyed and was very close to growing up; her brother, John Stewart; and sister, Helen Stewart Wood.

Frances C. Rogers

SINGER ISLAND, Fla. - Frances C. Rogers, 72, of Singer Island and North Hampton, N.H., died Sunday, April 29, 2001, after a brief illness.

Born June 30, 1928, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of John and Mabel (Hadley) Castle. She had recently moved from Windham, and previously lived in Methuen, Mass.

She had been involved in various retail endeavors over the years, most recently as the owner/operator of the "You're Invited" gift shop in Hampton Falls, N.H.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church, Rye Beach, N.H.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Kenneth L. Rogers; two daughters and their husbands, Gail and Scott Sudduth of Newfields, N.H., and Martha Jo and Douglas Hewitt of North Hampton and Fort Polk, La.; four grandchildren, Thomas and Emily Ostrander, and Sarah and Jennifer Hewitt.

She was predeceased by one son, Thomas J. Rogers.

There are no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, at St. Theresa's Church, Rye Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

Peter P. Hobbs

PORTSMOUTH - Peter P. Hobbs, 62, of 171 Sagamore Ave., passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the Veterans Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt.

Born in Portsmouth, March 18, 1939, he was the son of Carlos and Catherine (Walsh) Hobbs. He attended St. Patrick School and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1957.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6. He was an avid gardener and fisherman.

Survivors include four sisters, Mary Labranche of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Helen Kinch of Portsmouth, Sandra Osborne of East Kingston, and Shirley MacDonald of Portsmouth; his longtime companion, Dorothy Caswell and her family; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Smith; and two brothers, Carl Hobbs and Cornelius Hobbs Sr.

HOBBS - Peter P. Hobbs, 62, of 171 Sagamore Ave., Portsmouth, died May 2, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday at 9 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., today (Friday) from 6 to 8 p.m. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation of N.H., 66 Hanover St., Manchester, NH 03101-2230.

Roger P. Sloan

EXETER - Roger Pagan Sloan, 81, of Newfields Road, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a long illness.

Born July 8, 1919, in Claremont, he was the son of the late Harry Edson and Edith (Pagan) Sloan.

He was a resident of Exeter since 1946, formerly of Claremont, where he graduated from the local high school.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.

He graduated from the University of New Hampshire where he received his BA in forestry, and received his master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

He was employed with the UNH Extension Service from 1946 to 1983, serving as the county forester initially, then as the State Extension forester. He was also an associate professor at UNH.

He was a former chairman of the Exeter Conservation Commission, a trustee of Gilman Park, and a former director of the Exeter Cooperative Bank.

He was a longtime member of the Exeter Congregational Church. He formerly served as deacon for several years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, bee keeping, reading and managing his woodlots. His grandchildren were his greatest joy.

He was predeceased by his son, Bruce Aldrich Sloan, who died in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris (Aldrich) Sloan of Exeter; one son and his wife, Douglas and Anne Sloan of Stratham; one grandson, Nicholas Sloan of Stratham; and one granddaughter, Alexandra Sloan of Stratham.

SLOAN - Roger Pagan Sloan, 81, of Newfields Road, Exeter, died May 2, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Exeter Congregational Church. Private burial will be for the family in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Exeter Public Library, Chestnut Street, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of the arrangements.
