Amanda L. Francis

NORTH HAMPTON - Amanda L. Francis, 25, of 93 Mill Road, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born April 12, 1976, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Peter J. And Anne N. (Russell) Francis of North Hampton.

She was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School, Class of 1995. She worked as certified nursing assistant at Exeter Healthcare and also as a cosmetologist at Hot Locks in Greenland.

Her passion was being a caregiver to a young child, Isabella, and was planning to attend nursing school this fall.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. She also played softball on the team Fireballers with the Exeter co-ed softball league.

In addition to her parents of North Hampton, she leaves her fiance, Brian Melhorn of Kittery Maine; one sister, Maura A. Francis of North Hampton; her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Russell of Hampton; paternal grandfather, Leonard Francis of North Hampton; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

FRANCIS - Amanda L. Francis, 25, of 93 Mill Road, North Hampton, died May 7, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. After cremation, interment will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Amanda Francis Nursing School Scholarship Fund, c/o Seacoast Credit Union, 887 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Elizabeth H. Jewell

NORTH HAMPTON - Elizabeth H. "Betty" Jewell, 101, of 18 Fern Road, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born April 4, 1900, in Deep Brook, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Edith (Snell) Pinkney.

A homemaker, she resided in Exeter from 1922 to 1970, before moving to North Hampton.

She was a communicant of Christ Church, Episcopal of Exeter, and was a member of Orient Chapter No. 22 O.E.S. of Exeter.

She was the wife of the late F. Wilbur Jewell, who died in 1975.

Survivors include one son, Edward L. Jewell of North Hampton; one daughter, Carolyn Hine of Marlow, N.H.; two grandchildren, Leslie Berry of Keene, N.H., and Barbara Sanders of Newport, N.H.; and great-grandchildren.

JEWELL - Elizabeth H. "Betty" Jewell, 101, died April 20, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Christ Church Episcopal, 43 Pine St., Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Residents Fund, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833. Cheryl J. Vitale

AUBURN, N.Y. - Cheryl J. Vitale, our mother, who was 56, of 7084 North Division St., Auburn, N.Y., died Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 13, 1944, in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of L. Royal and Elsie (Nielsen) Jumper of Portsmouth, N.H. She grew up in Portsmouth and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.

Mom married her husband, Michael J. Vitale Sr., of Auburn, N.Y., on May 11, 1963, and moved to Auburn in 1964.

Our mother is survived by our devoted father and loving husband, Michael Vitale Sr.; two sons, Michael Vitale Jr., and wife Kristen, and Paul Vitale and wife Wendy; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Michael III (Mikey), Tommy and Lexi; two brothers, Richard and wife Judy of Eliot, Maine, and Robert and wife Rosemary of Medford, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

VITALE - Cheryl J. Vitale, 56, of Auburn, N.Y., died May 6, 2001. Friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian burial to be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Auburn. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends are invited to call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital, Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14642, and I Can Cope support group of Auburn. Our mother touched so many lives with her strength, courage and unselfish ways. She was always a lady, a loving wife, a giving mother, a caring grandmother, and a true friend. Her spirit and inspiration will live forever within us all.

Florence M. Hughes

AUBURN, Calif. - Mrs. Florence M. (Rowe) Hughes, of Auburn, Calif., died Feb. 8, 2001, in Roseville, Calif.

Born May 11, 1916, in Portsmouth, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Silas and Clara (Evely) Rowe.

A graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1933, she continued her education at the Portsmouth Training School for Teachers, graduating in 1937.

For several years, she taught third grade at the Horace Mitchell School in Kittery Point, Maine. She was a life member of the First United Methodist Church.

She was a volunteer at Vallejo, Calif., Hospital. Returning to New Hampshire for several years, she was also a volunteer at Exeter Hospital.

Survivors include her husband Donald L. Hughes of Auburn, Calif.; two daughters, Donna Stowell of Roseville, Calif., and Jane Hughes of Rocklin, Calif; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earle E. Rowe and John A. Rowe; a sister, Pauline R. Tucker; and several nieces and nephews.

HUGHES - Mrs. Florence M. (Rowe) Hughes, of Auburn, Calif., passed away Feb. 8, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, at First United Methodist Church, Miller Avenue, Portsmouth, N.H. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Joseph R. Morin

PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Roland Morin, 80, of 1438 Islington St., died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manchester.

Born Aug. 30, 1920, in Saint Leonard, New Brunswick, he was the son of John and Alice (Cormier) Morin. He had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 50 years.

A veteran World War II and the Korean Conflict, he was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and AARP.

He was the husband of the late Mary (Piccinni) Morin, who died in July 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Morin of Marietta, Ga., and Michael Morin of Poland Spring, Maine; two daughters, Arlene Rovnak of York, Maine, and Tina Desmarais of Fayston, Vt.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a brother, Conrad J. Morin of Portsmouth; two sisters, Bernadette Cyr of Wethersfield, Conn., and Lorraine Shortsleeve of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

MORIN - Joseph Roland Morin, 80, of 1438 Islington St., died May 7, 2001. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. No visiting hours. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

FRANKLIN - Priscilla Franklin, of Cider Hill Road, York, Maine, died Feb. 15, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in First Parish Cemetery, York. A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced in June at the Union Congregational Church of York Beach.

Ronald T. Wojer

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Ronald T. Wojer, 59, of Tenney Hill Road, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Chelsea, Mass., Oct. 18, 1941, he was the son of Zig and Rose (Balchak) Wojer. He attended local schools and graduated from Boston Trade High School.

He was the husband of Patricia (Williams) Wojer. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and was employed at Boston Naval Shipyard, Pease Air Force Base and most recently until his retirement in 1993, as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Outside Machine Shop.

He was a member of the Chelsea Yacht Club and the Hampton Chapter of the HOG Club (Harley Owners Group).

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Williams) Wojer; son, Ronald "Chip" Wojer Jr.; a brother, Christopher T. Wojer of Massachusetts; four sisters, Linda and Douglass Bevis of Massachusetts; Elaine Cyr of Massachusetts; Jane Nigno of California; and Gail Wojer of Massachusetts.

WOJER - Ronald T. Wojer, 59, of Tenney Hill Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died May 7, 2001. A funeral will be held on Thursday, May 10, at 11 a.m. from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/US Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Pauline G. Guyett

PORTSMOUTH - Pauline G. (McNeil) Guyett, 81, widow of James C. Guyett, of 928 South St., died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth

She was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 25, 1919, a daughter of the late James and Margretta (Coleman) McNeil.

She had been employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the supply department; the Macallen Co. formerly of Newmarket; the former Dan's Supermarket in Kittery, Maine; and the former Teddy's Lunch in Portsmouth.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.

She enjoyed crocheting, reading and sports as well as going to her grandchildren's sporting events. While a resident at the Edgewood Centre, she enjoyed playing bingo, bowling and many other of the Centre's activities.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Ann O'Reilly of Kittery and Janice E. Terrio of Epping; six grandchildren, Jason Terrio, Jared Terrio, Sherry O. Childs, Wendy O. Collins, Danna Eddy and Tricia Kashmen; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Three sisters, Barbara Palfrey, Elizabeth Dame and Joanne Lilakos predeceased her.

GUYETT - Pauline G. (McNeil) Guyett, 81, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died May 7, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Dept., 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Elise L. Hunnewell

YARMOUTH, Maine - Elise L. Hunnewell, 76, of Alpine Street, Littlejohn Island, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at a Portland hospital, after a brief illness.

Born in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Maurice E. and Ruth (Dixon) Luckstone. She attended local schools and graduated Georgetown Visitation Convent, Class of 1942. She also attended Briarcliff College, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing.

She worked for the Welcome Wagon in South Norwalk, Conn., and for the superintendent of schools in Norwalk, Conn. for many years.

She was chairperson for the Nursing Advisory Board for the Department of Health in Norwalk, Conn. for over 20 years.

She summered on Squirrel Island throughout her childhood. She retired to Maine with her husband, William, in 1983.

She was an assistant Girl Scout leader and was well-known by her family and friends for her culinary skills. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yarmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband, William, who died in 1991 and her sister, Patricia L. Mathe, who died in 1987.

She is survived by one son, John S. Hunnewell and his partner, Michelle LaCount, of Rye, N.H.; two daughters: Pamela Audet and her husband, John, of Cape Neddick, Maine; and Alison Fisk and her husband, R. James, of Hollis; one sister, Mrs. Edith Madden of Yarmouth; and four grandchildren.

HUNNEWELL - Elise L. Hunnewell, 76, of Alpine Street, Littlejohn Island, Yarmouth, Maine, died May 7, 2001. Visiting hours will be Friday, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Yarmouth. Burial will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Maine. Donations in her memory may be made to the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center, c/o Development Office/Gibson Pavilion, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, Maine 04101.

Henry M. Patenaude

RYE - Henry M. "Mike" Patenaude, of Clearwater, Fla., and Rye, formerly of Tewksbury, Mass., died May 8, 2001. He was the beloved husband of S. Regina (Sullivan) Patenaude. He was the devoted father of Regina L. Whitnall of Tewksbury; Edward G. Patenaude and his wife, Anne, of Rye; Thomas M. Patenaude and his wife, Peggy, of Andover, Mass.; Theresa M. Riel and her husband, Bud, of Ipswich, Mass.; Janice A. Stanton and her husband, Richard, of Belmont, Mass.; David M. Patenaude and his wife, Cheryl, of Hudson; and Michael P. Patenaude and his wife, Gail, of Tewksbury. He was the brother of Yvette Lepine, Alice Roy, Lorraine Blaha and Ella LaRoche, all of Florida, and the late Ruby LaRoche and Mary Jane Hamel. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a charter member of the Tewksbury Veterans Association, a member of the Wilmington-Tewksbury Lodge of Elks and the Wilmington-Tewksbury VFW.

PATENAUDE - Henry M. "Mike" Patenaude of Clearwater, Fla., and Rye, formerly of Tewksbury, Mass., died May 8, 2001. Funeral will be at 9 a.m. on Friday from the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. in St. William's Church, Main Street (Route 38), Tewksbury. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Interment will be in Tewksbury Cemetery. Contributions in his memory to the Portsmouth Home Health Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, would be appreciated.

Steven J. Gialousis

NEWMARKET - Steven J. Gialousis, 24, of Schanda Drive, died May 4, 2001, in Arizona.

Born Oct. 16, 1976, in Haverhill, Mass., he lived in Newmarket for 13 years before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a firefighter. While in the service he was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Ariz.

He is survived by his mother, Ellen (Fowler) Otash and her husband, Jon, of Newmarket; his father, Paul G. Gialousis of Newmarket; his maternal grandmother, Agnes R. Fowler of Tewksbury, Mass.; his paternal grandfather, James Gialousis of Lowell, Mass.; two sisters, Alison Ambrogio and her husband, Michael, of Newmarket and Sara Gialousis also of Newmarket; a brother, Thomas P. Gialousis of Nottingham; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

GIALOUSIS - Steven J. Gialousis, 24, of Newmarket, died May 4, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday from St. Michael's Church, Exeter, with burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Lt. Col. Paul John Buckley

CAMBRIDGE, Maine - Lt. Col. Paul John Buckley, (USAF, Ret.) 81, of Cambridge and Williston, Florida, died at his home in Florida on Sunday, May 6, 2001. He was a highly-decorated pilot in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H. in 1919, to Andrew Michael Buckley of Carrigdangan, County Cork, Ireland, and Ellen (Coffey) Buckley of Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland. He was a graduate of Southern Colorado University and was a Catholic.

He retired in 1973 after 31 years with the U.S. Air Force. He was a fully-qualified Air Defense and Tactical Air fighter pilot. He flew 83 combat missions in World War II, 103 missions in Korea, and 189 missions in Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and many others.

He was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff School. His last assignment was as executive officer to Lt. General Jay T. Robbins, the leading (living) Pacific Ace in World War II, in an Air Tactical study where many of the air tactics recommended were used in the Gulf War.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Garrett) Buckley; four children, Robert P. Buckley of Windham, N.H.; Maureen E. Buckley of Stowe, Mass.; James A. Buckley of Augusta, Maine; and Kathleen G. Buckley of Boxborough, Mass.; six grandchildren: Maleaka, Mark, Austin, Nathaniel, Maeghan, and Caitlin; one brother, Thomas Buckley of South Berwick, Maine. He was predeceased by his first wife, the children's mother, Margaret (Bennett) Buckley in 1963.

BUCKLEY - Lt. Col. Paul John Buckley (USAF, Ret.) 81, of Cambridge, Maine, and Williston, Florida, died May 6, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Oscar W. Olson

GALLATIN, Tennessee - Oscar W. Olson of Gallatin, Tennessee, formerly of Kittery and York, Maine, died May 1, 2001, in Tennessee.

Born on March 3, 1927, he was the beloved husband of Berniece (Hanson) Olson for 54 years, and the son of Oscar W. and Anna (Horning) Olson.

He attended Kittery schools. As a young man he worked at the old Kittery bowling alley that was located across from the Rice Library in Kittery. He worked many years at the Simplex Wire and Cable Co. in Newington, N.H.

He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served aboard the cruiser Astoria. The Astoria was engaged in many battles in the Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Donna Holst of Hendersonville, Tenn.; Margaret Clements of Sudbury, Mass.; and Christine Gilbert of Waynesboro, Va.; a son, Robert Olson of Cross Plains, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Mead of Oldsmar, Florida; and a brother, John C. Olson of Greenland, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Leon Main and Robert A. Olson. He loved his church and his family.

A military funeral service was held on Friday, May 4.

CLIFFORD - James H. Clifford III, M.D., 59, of Manchester by the Sea, Mass., died May 8, 2001. He was a son of Josephine (Callagy) Clifford and a brother of John T. Clifford, both of Rye Beach. He was also a brother of William F. Clifford of Hampton and Thomas A. Clifford of Rye. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Sacred Heart Church, Manchester by the Sea. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, Mass. Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
