R. Evelyn Eaton

SEABROOK - R. Evelyn Eaton, 92, of 2 Main St., died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

She was born in Bowdoinham, Maine, on March 6, 1909, a daughter of the late George and Mary (Marietta) Sedgley.

She was a graduate of Bowdoinham High School and moved to Seabrook in 1951 from Newburyport, Mass. She worked at the CBS Hytron Company in Newburyport for many years.

She was an avid bingo player and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of both the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post #70 and VFW Post 8942 of Rye.

She was the wife of the late Frank B. Eaton, who died in 1994, and was predeceased by two sons, Clayton V. Lindsey, in 1991, and Frederick E. Lindsey in 1990.

Family members include one son, Frank B. Eaton Jr. and his wife, Veronica, of East Kingston; one brother, Spear Sedgley, and two sisters, Marjorie Walentine and Frances Carr, all of Bowdoinham; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

EATON - R. Evelyn Eaton, 92, of 2 Main St., Seabrook, died May 8, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bay View Cemetery, Bowdoinham, Maine.

Isabel A. Dykeman

PORTSMOUTH - Isabel Agnes (Murphy) Dykeman, 82, of Portsmouth, formerly of Scarborough, Maine, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Isabel was born on Sept. 10, 1918, in Portland, Maine, the fourth of 10 children of John J. and Isabelle (Taylor) Murphy. She was educated in Catholic schools in Portland, and graduated from Cathedral High School, Portland, in 1937. She married Chester Dykeman in 1938. He died in 1965.

Isabel was trained as a CNA and worked briefly in a Portland nursing home. She retired from Fairchild Semiconductor in 1982. She had been an amateur radio operator, receiving her license in the 1950s. She and her husband were active in the ARRL until his death in 1965. She loved nature, especially birdwatching.

She is survived by three daughters, Isabel Polk and her husband Edward of Rockland, Maine, Carole Trask and her husband Ted of Merrimack, and Margaret Desfosses and her husband Phil of Portsmouth; one son, Chester Dykeman of Scarborough, Maine; two sisters, Alice (Sis) Kennedy of Portland and Dot Kelley of Windham, Maine; nine grandchildren, Kathy Smith of Milwaukee, Wis., Barbara Reid of Hampton Falls, Chester Dykeman of Windham, Maine, Theodore Trask of Merrimack, Adrianne Fernstrom of Rockland, Maine, William Fernstrom of Buxton, Maine, Frederick Dykeman of Scarborough, Maine, Steven Trask of Nashua, and Alfie Desfosses of Portsmouth; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Isabel was predeceased by a son, David; three sisters, Gertrude Grady, Anna Kelly and Eleanor Doherty; and brothers John Jr. (Mike), Phil, Eugene (Pete) and Ralph Murphy.

DYKEMAN - Isabel Agnes (Murphy) Dykeman, 82, of Portsmouth, and formerly Scarborough, Maine, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made in Isabel's memory to the Greater Seacoast Adult Day Services, 127 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Barbara Bush Children's Unit, Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.

Daniel K. Smith

NOTTINGHAM - Daniel K. Smith, 39, of 106 Smoke St., died Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., and raised in Plaistow, where he attended the Pollard School and was a member of the Timberlane Regional High School Class of 1980. He attended Plymouth State College and received his bachelor's degree in regional planning and development from the University of New Hampshire.

He was a co-founder and partner of Smith-Wessel Associates Inc., an environmental consulting firm established in 1995 in Merrimac, Mass. He was a member of the National Institute of Building Sciences, the National Lead Abatement Council and the New England Environmental Information Association. He was listed as an honored professional in the 1996-97 edition of Who's Who in Executives and Businesses.

A former Stratham resident, he was an avid outdoorsman and naturalist, who enjoyed fishing, bird-watching and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Diane L. (DeGloria) Smith; his mother, Eleanor (Nelson) Smith of Kingston; two brothers, William Haggerty of Seabrook and Bradley Smith of South Alton; a sister, Kimberly Kissel of Plaistow; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

SMITH - Daniel K. Smith, 39, of Nottingham, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Donations in his name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH.

Dale T. Woodworth Sr.

ROCHESTER - Dale Tilden Woodworth Sr., 75, of Milton Road, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1926, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., he was the son of the late Lyle and Doris (Bowden) Woodworth.

He lived in Rochester for the past 23 years after moving from Kittery, Maine. He attended the Kittery schools. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a shipwright where he retired after 27 years. He enjoyed carpentry work, which he did for many years.

He enjoyed music, having played the accordion. He and his brother and father had their own band and called themselves the Polka Dots. The group played in the local area.

He was a life member of the VFW No. 1772, NARFE, the Moose Lodge No. 1282 of Milton, and a member of American Legion Post No. 7.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Members of his family include his wife of 36 years, Eleanor M. Woodworth of Rochester; his sons, Daryl T. Woodworth of South Berwick, Maine, Dale T. Woodworth Jr. of Sanford, Maine, Dean C. Woodworth of Lebanon, Maine, and James Woodworth of Barrington; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson; his daughters, Lynn and Patricia Woodworth, both of Rochester; his sisters, Shirley Renner of Dover and Elaine Derry of East Burke, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Wanda Woodworth; his brother, Donald Woodworth; his stepmother, Lilllian Woodworth; and a stepbrother, Carlton Woodworth.

WOODWORTH - Dale Tilden Woodworth Sr., 75, of Milton Road, Rochester, died May 7, 2001. Calling hours will be held 7 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday) at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Maine St., Rochester, NH 03867. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be in the Christian Cemetery in Kittery Point, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rochester Visiting Nurse, 89 Charles St., Rochester, NH 03867.

Emma M. Boyd

RYE - Emma M. Boyd of Rye died on Tuesday, May 8, 2001.

Beloved wife of the late John T. Boyd. Devoted and loving mother of Cynthia Lentz of Allentown, Pa., John T. Boyd Jr. of Rye, Candace Boyd of Sunapee, Hollie Fremeau of Manchester, and Celeste B. Ward of Stratham.

She is also survived by a brother, Gordon N. MacKenzie of Harwich, Mass., and was predeceased by her sisters, Florence and Marion, and brothers, Irving and Allen.

She leaves six adored grandchildren, Mark Lentz, John and Shalyn Ward, Ayla Boyd, Michael and Jack Fremeau. Proud great-grandmother of Ashely and Jacob Lentz. She is also survived by nieces, Heather and Marsha, and nephews, Neil, Gordon and Doug.

BOYD - Emma M. Boyd of Rye died May 8, 2001. Services will be held in the Rye Congregational Church, Central Road, Rye Center, Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, from 5-9 p.m. today (Thursday). Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Emma's memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Mary P. Carroll

ELIOT, Maine - Mary P. Carroll, 95, widow of Joseph P. Carroll, of Riverview Drive, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Kirkwood Corners in Lee, N.H.

Born in Dover on Nov. 2, 1905, she was the daughter of Frank W. and Martha (Haley) Prescott.

She was a graduate of Dover High School and Wentworth Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed for many years at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, where she was a supervisor, retiring in 1972.

After her marriage, she and her husband were the first to settle on Riverview Drive in Eliot, where they encouraged and participated in warm neighborhood gatherings.

She was a member of the Wentworth Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and was active in Eliot Senior Citizens for many years.

She was affiliated with St. John's United Methodist Church of Dover. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph P. Carroll, who died Feb. 25, 1999.

Family members include one son, Patrick J. Carroll of Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren, Patrick J. Carroll Jr. of Eliot and Catherine Maynard of Portland, Maine; four great-grandchildren, Neva M. Carroll, Patrick Carroll and Mathieu Carroll, all of Eliot, and Nicholas Maynard of Portland.

CARROLL - Mary P. Carroll, 95, of Eliot, Maine, died May 8, 2001. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Anne Robertson, pastor of St. John's United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

James H. Clifford III, M.D.

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, Mass. - James H. Clifford III, M.D., 59, husband of Gail (Tosi) Clifford, died Tuesday morning, May 8, 2001, at Beverly Hospital.

Born in Lawrence on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1942, son of Josephine (Callagy) Clifford of Rye Beach, N.H., and the late James H. Clifford Jr., he was the oldest of four boys. Jim grew up in Rye Beach. He was loved at the Rye Beach Club where he served as pool director and met his bride-to-be, Gail Frances Tosi.

Jim was graduated cum laude from Phillips Academy in Andover in 1960 and from Harvard College in 1963. In 1967, he received a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He then was an intern in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital from 1967 to 1968. Following two years with the United States Air Force, Jim completed his medical training at the Medical Center Hospital of the University of Vermont.

Jim had been a well-respected member of the Beverly Hospital staff since 1972. He was a former trustee of Beverly Hospital, chief of medicine at Beverly Hospital, and medical director of Beverly Nursing Home. He was currently the medical director of Lahey Beverly, Danvers, Ipswich and a member of the Medical Director Committee at Lahey Burlington. Jim was a member of the American Medical Association and the Massachusetts Medical Association.

Jim was known for his true passion for his family, friends, gardening, tennis, reading and history. He loved the ocean, swimming, and body surfing, and enjoyed much of his leisure time with family and friends at the Manchester Bath and Tennis Club and Essex Country Club. Jim will be remembered as a gentleman with strong competitive standards.

A 26-year resident of Manchester by the Sea, Jim was deeply devoted to his entire family. He will be missed by all, especially his wife of 36 years, Gail (Tosi) Clifford; his three daughters, Lisa Marie Clifford of Charlestown, Christina Clifford Comparato of Hamilton, and Julie Clifford Smail, M.D., of Cranston, R.I.; his sons-in-law, Christopher P. Comparato of Hamilton and David F. Smail, M.D., of Cranston; his mother, Josephine (Callagy) Clifford of Rye Beach; his brothers, John J. Clifford, D.M.D., Thomas A. Clifford of Rye, N.H., and William F. Clifford of Hampton, N.H.; and his granddaughter, Caroline E. Comparato of Hamilton.

CLIFFORD - James H. Clifford III, M.D., 59, of Manchester by the Sea, Mass., died on May 8, 2001. He was the husband of Gail (Tosi) Clifford. Father of Lisa M. Clifford of Charlestown, Christina Clifford Comparato and her husband Christopher P. Comparato of Hamilton, and Julie Clifford Smail, M.D., and her husband David S. Smail, M.D., of Cranston, R.I. He was the son of Josephine (Callagy) Clifford of Rye Beach, N.H. He was the brother of John T. Clifford of Rye Beach, N.H., William F. Clifford of Hampton, N.H., and Thomas A. Clifford of Rye, N.H. He was the grandfather of Caroline E. Comparato of Hamilton. A funeral Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Church, Manchester by the Sea, Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, from 4-8 p.m. today (Thursday). The family has requested memorial donations to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, in lieu of flowers.

Doris S. Golter

KITTERY, Maine - Doris S. Golter, 96, of 33 Oak Terrace, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at The Alternative in Kittery.

She was born on April 21, 1905, in London, England, the daughter of the late John R. and Cecilia (Sutton) Golter.

She was employed for 65 years for the former Brown's Jewelry Store of Portsmouth, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include two sisters, Genevieve Dow of North Hampton and Cecilia "Nell" Edwards of Eliot, Maine; several nieces and nephews, including nephew Kenneth J. Edwards of Shapleigh, Maine.

GOLTER - Doris S. Golter, 96, of 33 Oak Terrace, Kittery, Maine, died May 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Walter L. Hartwell

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Walter L. Hartwell, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Harborside Health Care.

He moved to Brevard County, Florida, in 1974, from Portsmouth, where he was born. He was a U.S.

Coast Guard veteran.

He was a parts manager for Taccetta Chevrolet in Portsmouth.

He enjoyed working on cars and helping others in the neighborhood with their cars. He was a volunteer

with the Portsmouth Auxiliary Fire Department for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Nellie Hartwell of Rockledge; a daughter, Jeanette F. Hartwell of

Windham, Maine; two sons, James T. Hartwell of Ocean Springs, Miss., and John W. Hartwell of New-

market; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

HARTWELL - Walter L. Hartwell, 93, of Rockledge, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, died Jan. 30, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Greenland Cemetery.

Thomas J. Manning Jr.

HAMPTON BEACH - Thomas J. Manning Jr., 78, of 15 Dumas Ave., died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Sunbridge Care Center-Glenwood in Lowell, Mass.

He was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Manchester, the son of the late Thomas J. and Alice T. (Dolan) Manning. He was a graduate of Manchester High School and the University of New Hampshire, with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He worked as a chemist for the Cabot Company of Chelsea, Mass., for many years.

He lived in Stoneham, Mass., for many years and had summered at Hampton Beach since childhood, moving here year-round after retiring in 1985.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, and was an usher at St. Patrick's Church, Hampton Beach, during the summer months.

He was a member of the Republican Club of Stoneham, Mass. He enjoyed the beach and the ocean and golfing, and was a member of the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye, where he achieved a hole-in-one.

Family members include his wife of 50 years, Virginia M. (Mellen) Manning of Hampton Beach; one son, Thomas J. Manning III of Stoneham, Mass.; one daughter, Christine M. Manning of Hampton; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary M. Smith.

Patricia E. Warrington

KINGSTON - Patricia E. Warrington, 76, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass.

She was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Putney, Vt., daughter of the late John Joseph and Ethel (Aiken) Lyons. She was the widow of Edwin G. Warrington Jr., who died June 14, 2000.

She graduated from Salem Classical and High School in Massachusetts in 1943 as valedictorian and attended Salem Evening School. She worked as a secretary in Boston, Mass., and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She was a ham radio operator, WB1EOF.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Exeter (Reformed) for many years.

She was predeceased by one brother, John Carlton Lyons, and one sister, Eleanor Lansing.

She is survived by a daughter, Eileen Erin Wentworth of Rochester; two sons, Timothy Warrington and Mark Warrington, both of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, William Lyons of Putney, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

WARRINGTON - Patricia E. Warrington, 76, of Kingston, died May 9, 2001. Private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of arrangements.
