Phyllis Anna Thompson

ELIOT, Maine - On May 10, 2001, Phyllis Anna Thompson of Eliot, passed away peacefully at York Hospital, ending her long-term struggle with chronic lung disease. She was 75 years old.

She was born Phyllis Anna Place, daughter of Harold Rutledge Place and Estella Areczena (Hanscom) Place on Dec. 21, 1925. She was born at home in Eliot, and was the youngest of seven children. She attended the Eliot schools and graduated from Eliot High School in 1943.

Following high school, she went to work at Rival Foods in Portsmouth, N.H., as a bookkeeper. Among her tasks there she was responsible for the accounting of government food rationing coupons during World War II. After the war, she met and married Kenneth Edward Thompson of Portsmouth, a recent veteran of the war. They soon began raising a family, which, before they were through, would include five children.

In addition to raising their children, Phyllis and Kenneth built two homes in Eliot. Phyllis was involved in the hands-on aspects of the construction of each of the two homes, from the foundation work to the finish work. Though she was primarily a homemaker, she also worked as a bookkeeper at Green Acre Baha'i School during summers in the 1960s.

She had many hobbies including music, sewing, knitting and crocheting, but will be remembered most recently as a poet. She wrote many, many poems over the course of her life, and had published many in recent years in the Eliot monthly newspaper, The Curmudgeon. Her poems reflected a gentle, hopeful outlook, and celebrated diversity among people. Happily, these were not just lovely passages to fill her lines of poetry, but ideals that characterized the way she lived.

Although a quiet and unassuming woman, she was loved by many people, though not nearly so much as she was loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss her dearly. For many years her home was a crossroads for many people, and a safe harbor for those who needed sanctuary or a meal, or just a hot cup of coffee and someone to talk with.

Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Kenneth who died in June of 1994, and with whom she was married for 46 years. She was also predeceased by all of her siblings.

She is survived by her children, John Thompson of Eliot, Steven Thompson of Eliot, Jo Anna French and husband Jack French of Bangor, Scott Thompson and his wife Monica Zulauf of Somersworth, N.H., and William Thompson and his wife Josephine Thompson of Los Angeles, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
