Barbara C. Herrera

FARMINGTON - Barbara C. Herrera, 39, of 18 Orchard Circle, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in East Wendover, Utah.

Born in Portsmouth, July 9, 1961, she was the daughter of Frances A. (LaValley) Burns and John D. Hughes.

She was a 1979 graduate of Thornton High School in Thornton, Colo., and a graduate of the Colorado College of Medical and Dental Assistants.

Survivors include her mother, Frances A. Burns, and stepfather, William J. Burns of Alton, N.H.; her father, John D. Hughes of Loveland, Colo.; four children, Jesse Herrera of Boise, Idaho, Christopher Herrera of Farmington, Jenny Herrera of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Alisha Hughes of Spring Creek, Nev.; her grandfather, Albert B. LaValley, and stepgrandmother, Lorraine LaValley of Portsmouth; two sisters, Brenda Henderson of Rochester and Frances Jean Crawford of Spring Creek, Nev.; a brother, John D. Hughes of Aurora, Colo.; and aunts, uncles, and several nieces and nephews.

HERRERA - Barbara C. Herrera, 39, of 18 Orchard Circle, Farmington, N.H., died May 17, 2001. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Susie M. Grasso

MILFORD - Susie M. Grasso, 93, a resident of 71 Elm St., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Harborside Healthcare Center-Milford.

Born in Milford on June 12, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Maria J. (Bontempo) Calvetti.

She was a lifelong resident of Milford. She enjoyed crafts and was well known for her beautiful crocheting. In addition, she enjoyed bingo.

She was a member of AARP, Souhegan Valley Chapter, Milford. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Milford.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Grasso, who died in 1970.

Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Salvatore J. and Joanne Grasso of Portsmouth; a daughter, Carmella J. Villane of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two very special friends, Jane Pratt and Elaine Pratt of Milford.

GRASSO - Susie M. Grasso, 93, of 71 Elm St., Milford, N.H., died May 17, 2001. Calling hours are Monday, May 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, 34 Amherst St., Milford. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Harborside Healthcare Center-Milford, Activities Fund, c/o Samantha Carpentiere, 71 Elm St., Milford, NH 03055. Smith & Heald Funeral Home, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.

Jane W. Simmons

PORTSMOUTH - Jane W. Simmons, 87, of Portsmouth, formerly of Potosi, Mo., was born at Fountain Farm, Mo., on Nov. 13, 1913. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Charlotta (Smith) White. She died at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth on May 12, 2001.

She was united in marriage to Russell R. Simmons on June 18, 1937, in Potosi. He preceded her in death on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1987.

She is survived by one daughter, Emily S. White of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, David Verdi and his wife, Denise, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Alan Verdi and his wife, Michelle, of Portsmouth; three great-grandchildren, Coleen, Steven and Elisa Verdi.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Lt. James R. Verdi, and one brother, Frank M. White.

She was a longtime member of the Potosi Presbyterian Church. She was a charter member of the Sarah Barton Long Chapter of DAR. She was an associate member Ranger Chapter DAR in Portsmouth. She enjoyed her many family and friends and was very dedicated to the community.

She and her late husband were very instrumental in many projects in Washington County, Mo., one of them being the donation of property for the current Potosi United Methodist Church.

Visitation was held at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at the Moore Funeral Home in Potosi.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, May 18, at Potosi Presbyterian Church with Brother James Malugen and the Rev. Bob Bullock officiating. Burial was in the new Masonic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were David Verdi, Alan Verdi, James Short, Trever Hill, Dennis Hill and Gordon Litton.

Lillian D. Hamel

HAMPTON - The funeral for Lillian D. Hamel, 96, of 97 Leavitt Road, was held Wednesday, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was cantor and soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. A cross representing a Christian symbol was placed on the casket by her daughter, Claire Hamel, and words of remembrance were offered by her granddaughter, Irene. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping, with the rite of committal conducted by Father MacKenzie. Pallbearers were Robert Hamel, Joel Porter, Ronald Hamel and John McCreary.

Mark P. Richards

HAMPTON - The funeral for Mark P. Richards, 44, of 28 Dunvegan Woods, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was cantor and soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The readings were offered by Kathleen Scanlon and Britt Richards. Jack and Beth Richards offered the Prayer of the Faithful. The gifts were presented to the altar by Tyler, Conor and Parker Richards. Burial was in Holy Angels Cemetery, Plaistow on Saturday morning with the rite of committal conducted by Deacon George Borkush of Holy Angel Parish. Pallbearers were Peter Sheehan, Parker Ryan, Craig Leach and Tommy Hemminway.

Richard W. Tatarinowicz

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Richard W. Tatarinowicz, 50, of 102 Exeter Road, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was cantor and soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The readings were offered by Thomas Culhane and Lucille Fitzsimmons. Burial followed in the Oak Lawn Cemetery with the rite of committal conducted by Father Ham. Taps was sounded and the U.S. flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Tartarinowicz's widow, Carol A. (Cabana) Tatarinowicz by a detachment of personnel representing the Marine Corps. Mrs. Tartarinowicz then presented the flag to their son, Eric T. Tartarinowicz. Pallbearers were Michael Culhane, Rick Ace, Kevin Culhane, Ed Hassinger, David Sheets, Louis Merola and Thomas Culhane.

James M. Connery

JAMESTOWN, R.I. - James M. Connery, 50, of Swinburne St., died Friday at home.

Born in Woburn, Mass., he was a son of John J. Connery of Marco Island, Fla. and the late Mary P. (O'Connell) Connery.

He was a longtime resident of Rhode Island. He graduated from Barrington High School in 1968 and graduated from URI in 1972. He was involved with the Conservation Agency and was an avid gardener and guitar player. He enjoyed music and the outdoors.

Besides his father he leaves a brother, John W. Connery of Columbia, Mich.; two sisters, Janice Colby of Morristown, N.J., and Elizabeth A. Cronin of Hampton, N.H. He was the brother of the late Cathleen Thomas.

CONNERY - James M. Connery, 50, of Swinburne St., Jamestown, R.I., died May 18, 2001. A memorial gathering will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Lighthouse at Beavertail Park, Bevertail Road, Jamestown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New England Organ & Tissue Bank, 50 Staniford St., Boston, MA 02114, or Jamestown Ambulance, 50 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835

Helene Bulley

KITTERY - A graveside committal service and burial for Helene Bulley, who died Jan. 5, 2001, were held Saturday afternoon in Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick. The Reverand George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, recited committal prayers. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery

Dr. Robert Andrew Johnson

NEW CASTLE - Dr. Robert Andrew Johnson of Newcastle, N.H. died May 18, 2001.

Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Pittsfield, N.H., he was a graduate of Bates College and Albany Medical School. He served overseas in the Air Force from 1943 until 1946, receiving the Bronze Star.

A member of the American Board of Surgery and The Board of Neurological Surgery, he trained at Bellevue Hospital, Jersey City Medical Center, Children's Hospital in Boston, Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and New York Hospital. He was attending neurosurgeon at the major hospitals in Worcester, Mass., for 37 years and retired as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

His wife of 55 years, Minna Flynn Johnson, survives him, as does a daughter, Amy E. Johnson of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; two sons, Robert Flynn Johnson of San Francisco, and Richard Andrew Johnson of Milton, Mass.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by his brothers, John M. Johnson, M.D., of Southampton, Long Island, N.Y., and Wallace E. Johnson, M.D. of Dayton, Ohio.

JOHNSON - Dr. Robert Andrew Johnson, of New Castle, N.H., died May 18, 2001. Private funeral services at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Arrangments by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

CROSSMAN - Harold G. Crossman, Jr., 79, of 52 Sherburne Road, Portsmouth, died May 12, 2001. Committal services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, at the Durham Cemetery, Durham, N.H. Friends invited. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Harland F. Chapman

DERRY - Harland F. Chapman, 76, of 1 Bayberry Lane, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

He was born in Exeter on Feb. 5, 1925, the son of the late George and Edith (Wentworth) Chapman.

He was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy in Derry and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a cook for nearly 30 years, working at Phillips Exeter Academy and the Rockingham Nursing Home. He resided in the Seacoast area most of his life, and moved to Vermont in the late 1970s. More recently, he resided in Derry.

He was the husband of Eleanor F. (Moulton) Chapman for 40 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include six sons: Michael L. Coburn of Tennessee, Donald W. Coburn of Vermont, Scott P. Coburn of New Hampshire, Mark E. Chapman of Vermont, Paul O. Chapman of California, and Bruce Chapman of Manchester; six daughters: Shirley A. Chapman of Portsmouth, Lynne Aboujaoude of Derry, April S. Forgit of Pennsylvania, Beth A. Curto of Pennsylvania, Robin M. Chapman of Vermont, and Angelia L. Chapman of Derry; 23 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Chapman of Georgia and Reginald Chapman of Kingston; two sisters, Lucy Bloom of Stratham and Betty Reid of Rhode Island; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Daniel O. Coburn, who died in 1972.

CHAPMAN - Harland F. Chapman, 76, of 1 Bayberry Lane, Derry, died May 19, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Sophia Burke

HAMPTON - Sophia "Betty" Burke, 88, died on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center where she resided since 1997.

She was born in Salem, Mass., on July 3, 1912, the daughter of the late John and Caroline (Ludwin) Chmielewski. She had resident in Hampton since 1977.

She provided many hours of community service, volunteering as a secretary at the Hampton Town Office, Hampton schools, and at the Lane Memorial Library. She was a member of the Hampton Senior Citizen's Club.

She was the widow of Gordon C. Burke, who died in 1996.

Family members include her four daughters: Carol Ann Sohn of Leola, Pa., Judith Mae Modine of Cheshire, Conn., and Sandra Louise Scagliotti and Lynda Stephanie Burke, both of Hampton; three grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Edward Chemelski of Salem; and many nieces and nephews.

BURKE - Sophia Burke, 88, of Hampton, died on May 20, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Louise J. Paquette

BRENTWOOD - Louise J. Paquette, 99, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Rockingham Nursing Home, where she resided since 1993.

The youngest of 14 children, she was born in Somersworth on Sept. 1, 1901, the daughter of the late Honore and Marie (Gagne) Dubois.

She worked for many years as an assembly and manufacturing worker in the Dover area mills and shoe shops.

She had resided in the Dover-Somersworth area for most of her life, before moving to Hampton Falls in 1991.

She was a former communicant of St. Charles Church in Dover and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. She was a former member of the Women of the Moose in Dover for many years, serving as president in 1951.

She was the wife of the late Elmer J. Paquette, who died in 1961.

Survivors include one son, Elmer J. Paquette of Rye; one daughter, June Grady of Barryville, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

PAQUETTE - Louise J. Paquette, 99, of Brentwood, died May 20, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 8:45 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of the Mass at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dover.

Ethel B. Remick

RYE - Ethel B. Remick, 93, of Straw's Point, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Waltham, Mass., on Nov. 7, 1907, the daughter of the late Grover C. and Flora W. (Oxton) McQuillan. She had resided in Rye for most of her life, before retiring to Lakeland, Fla., in 1970. She lived there for 25 years, returning to Rye five years ago to live with her daughter.

During the 1930s she worked for her family's business, the former Rand Stom Quarry in Rye. She also worked during World War II at Camp Langdon and then worked from the mid-1940s until her retirement in 1969 in the supply department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a 1928 graduate of Portsmouth High School and a 1930 graduate of McIntosh Business School in Portsmouth. She was a former member of the Rye Bethany Church and of Christ Lutheran Church of Lakeland, Fla. She was a charter and life member of Rye's Darning Needle Club, and a member and former historian of the Zef Club of Lakeland. She was also an honorary life member of the National Camping Traveler's Association.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star's Grand Chapter of Florida, the Lakeland Chapter of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, the Bethlehem Shrine Auxiliary No. 9 of Lakeland and a charter member of the William Pitt Tavern in Portsmouth's Strawbery Banke.

She was the widow of Irving L. "Lee" Remick who died in 1985.

She was also predeceased by her son, James L. Brown, in 1999, and a grandson, James L, Brown Jr., in 1987.

Family members include her daughter, Jane B. Remick of Rye; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

REMICK - Ethel B. Remick, 93, of Straw's Point, Rye, died May 18, 2001. Services will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory of Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Rye Ambulance Corps, c/o Rye Fire Department, 563 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870.

Wayne M. Keith

ROCHESTER - Wayne Merritt Keith, 61, of 76 Winter St., died Friday, May 18, 2001, at the Rochester Manor after a courageous five-year battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Born July 24, 1939, in Rochester, he was the first son of H. Merritt and Rita (Beaulieu) Keith. He graduated from Spaulding High School, Class of 1957, and served four years in the U.S. Navy as an avionics specialist. He attended the University of New Hampshire and later received an associate's degree in art from El Camino Junior College in Torrence, Calif. He was employed by the Simplex Wire & Cable Co. for 19 years as a development technician before retiring due to his illness.

He was an extensive world traveler, visiting six continents and twice driving solo to Alaska and back by automobile. He was athletic and an avid sports fan. He enjoyed jazz music and loved York Beach in Maine. He was widely known for his "one of a kind" sense of humor and very dark summer tans.

Survivors include his mother, Rita Keith (with whom he resided); a brother, Vaughn Keith of Rochester; a sister, Cheryl Clark of York, Maine; a nephew, Thomas Keith of Kittery, Maine; two nieces, Sheila Lessard of Auburn, N.H., and Tanya Clark of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandnieces, Madeline and Cydney Lessard.

He was predeceased by his father, who died in 1996 at the age of 83.

KEITH - Wayne Merritt Keith, 61, of 76 Winter St., Rochester, N.H., died on May 18, 2001. Special services requested by the deceased will be honored and observed. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester.
