Katherine May Scheier

YORK, Maine - Katherine May Scheier, 81, formerly of Yorkshire Commons, Sentry Hill and Homestead Nursing Home, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1919, in Somerville, N.J., she was the daughter of George and Mary (Holt) Schlapfer.

She and her husband Stephen lived in Flemington and Toms River, N.J., before moving to York in January 1991.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Stephen Joseph Scheier Jr., who died Dec. 2, 1999; three brothers, Morris, Stanley and William Schlapfer; and her sister, Florence.

Although she no longer is with us, she leaves us with the memory of her smile and her wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include her devoted daughters, Nancy Ordemann and her husband, Rick, of York, and Bonnie Scheier-DiPasquale and fiancé John Infusino, of Brick, N.J.; a treasured grandson, Ricky Ordemann of York; a sister, Marian Miner of California; and a stepbrother, Charles Schlapfer of Brick, N.J.

SCHEIER - Katherine M. Scheier, formerly of Yorkshire Commons, Sentry Hill and Homestead Nursing Home, died May 22, 2001, at York Hospital, York, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home. If desired, memorial donations may be made to York Hospital Home Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

John Alexander Schanda

NEWMARKET - John Alexander Schanda, 68, of Grant Road, died at home, Wednesday, May 23, 2001.

Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Newmarket, he was the youngest son of Frank A. and Mable (Morrison) Schanda of Newmarket, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was a 43-year member and past commander of Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67, Newmarket; member of the Dover Lodge No. 184 BPO Elks; member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 443, Dover; past president of Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 Fraternal Order of Eagles, Newmarket; member of Local 976, Laborer's International Union of North America; and a member of Rising Star Masonic Lodge No. 47, Newmarket.

He is survived by two sons, John L. Schanda and his wife, Patricia, and Joseph Schanda and his wife, Theresa, all of Arlington, Mass.; two daughters, Joanne and her husband, Robert Brown, of Barrington, and Janet and her husband, David Richardson, of Rochester; three sisters, Frances T. Allen of Red Oak Hill, Epping, Barbara B. Wilsterman of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marie Samora of San Bruno, Calif.; two brothers, Richard R. Schanda and Joseph Schanda, both of Newmarket; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Frank Schanda.

SCHANDA - John Alexander Schanda, 68, of Grant Road, Newmarket, died May 23, 2001. Calling hours will be today (Friday) at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, from 7 to 9 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. and Legion services will be at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home with the Rev. David Wuori officiating. Committal services will follow at the graveside in Riverside Cemetery in Newmarket.

Cliff Thomas Coker

LITTLETON, Colo. - Cliff Thomas Coker, 55, of Littleton, died May 15, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

Born June 15, 1945, in Gladewater, Texas, he was the son of the late Maj. Ellis Clifton Coker, U.S. Army, retired.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Nelson of Littleton; three daughters, Ashley, Megan and Kristen Feller; two sons, Colin and Corey; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Norma Coker of South Merrimack, N.H.; two sisters, Jennifer Coker of Lawrence, Kan., and Katherine Coker-Cronin of Bennington, N.H.; and a brother, Donald Coker of Portsmouth, N.H.

In a final act of giving, he donated his organs to waiting recipients, and wished his body be donated to science. His ashes will be scattered around the Isles of Shoals at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Donor Alliance, 3773 Cherry Creek North Drive, Suite 601, Denver, CO 80209.

Bessie Burke

KITTERY, Maine - Bessie Burke, 91, of 21 Manson Ave., died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in South Paris, Maine, after a brief stay in the Market Square Health Care Center.

Born in Limestone, Maine, on May 16, 1910, she was the daughter of John and Alice Johndro. As a young woman she moved to Portsmouth, N.H., where she lived at the YWCA and worked on the Portsmouth Navy Yard during World War II.

She married Charles F. Burke in 1945 and resided in Thomaston with her husband and young son until 1953, after which they moved to Kittery, where she spent the remainder of her years. Her husband died in 1955. She worked in the Portsmouth school system food service until her retirement.

She is survived by one son, John W. Burke and his wife, Kathi, of Locke Mills; and two granddaughters, Heather Fay of Norfolk, Va., and Kristin Burke of Locke Mills

A memorial Mass will be said at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 845 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday, May 29, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations toward a park bench and flowering tree placed in her memory at the Foxwell apartments would be appreciated.

Louise J. Paquette

HAMPTON - The funeral for Louise J. Paquette, 99, formerly of Hampton Falls and Dover, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society.

Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dover, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Griffin.

Kenneth P. McDonough

PORTSMOUTH - Kenneth Paul McDonough, 97, formerly of Green Valley, Ariz., died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Kittery, Maine, Oct. 29, 1903, he was the son of Richard D. and Marion (Phillips) McDonough. He graduated from Portsmouth High School and from Dartmouth College. After college he joined the St. Croix Paper Co., later known as Georgia Pacific, in Woodland, Maine, and retired from there in 1968.

Following his retirement, he and his wife, the late Mary (Doyle) McDonough, traveled for several years and then settled in Green Valley. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Calais, Maine; and a communicant of St. James Parish in Woodland, Maine, and Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Green Valley.

He was active in the alumni activities of the Dartmouth College Class of 1925, with the special assistance of his daughter-in-law Caroline McDonough.

Survivors include his children, Richard D. McDonough of Old Greenwich, Conn., Nancy A. Lerandeau of Orofino, Idaho, Elizabeth Emerson of Vallejo, Calif., and Michael G. McDonough of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

MCDONOUGH - Kenneth P. McDonough, 97, died in Portsmouth, May 24, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer Street, Portsmouth, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Mark H. Wentworth Home, Social Activities Fund, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Irving E. Whitney

KITTERY, Maine - Irving E. Whitney 79, of Kittery, passed away at the York Hospital, Thursday night, May 24, 2001.

He was born July 28, 1921, in Wilton, N.H., the son of the late Henery and Mary (Mercer) Whitney Sr. He attended local schools, and in 1941 he moved to Kittery, where he worked for 24 years as a mechanic at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

In his leisure time, Mr. Whitney enjoyed deer hunting, and according to his family it has been officially recorded that Mr. Whitney shot the second-largest deer (a 16 pointer), in Maine. He also loved to run coon dogs and from time to time enjoyed lobster fishing with his son. He was a member of the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club, the National Rifle Association, and was active with the Boy Scouts of America.

He was married to the former Maxine Campbell, who predeceased him in January 2000.

He is survived by his son, Irving Edgar Whitney of Kittery; daughter, Virginia Rux of South Berwick; stepdaughter, Maxine Campbell; adopted son, William Whitney; three grandchildren; and brother, Harold Whitney of Kittery Point.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Henery Whitney Jr. and Edgar Whitney, and a sister, Lucy Timothy.

WHITNEY - Mr. Irving E. Whitney, 79, of Kittery, Maine, died Thursday night, May 24, 2001, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 31, 2001, at 10 a.m., at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, pastor of St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Kittery, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Oceanview Cemetery, Wells, Maine.

Harry Portman

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Harry Portman, affectionately known as "Red," were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Friday, with services held at Temple Israel in Portsmouth. Rabbi David Mark officiated. Words of remembrance were given by son, Dr. Ronald Portman, grandsons Adam and Andrew Silver, and granddaughter Wendi Portman.

In attendance were members of Temple Israel and representatives from Portsmouth Regional Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.

Bearers were Dr. Ronald Portman, Sheldon Gelman, Richard Silver, Adam Silver, Andrew Silver and Gerald Singer.

Harland F. Chapman

DERRY - The funeral for Harland F. Chapman, 76, of Derry, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. Services were conducted at graveside in the High Street Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated.

Sophia Burke

HAMPTON - The funeral for Sophia "Betty" Burke, 88, of Hampton, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society.

Using the cross as a Christian symbol, her daughter, Sandra L. Scagliotti, placed it on the casket. A poem was offered by her four daughters, Carol Ann Sohn, Judith Mae Modine, Sandra Louise Scagliotti and Lynda Stephanie Burke.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father MacKenzie.

Dr. Robert S. Ecke

ELIOT, Maine - Dr. Robert Skidmore Ecke, of Eliot, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Nov. 22, 1909, he was the son of the late Albert D. and Grace (Dekker) Ecke.

He was educated in New York City public schools and in 1931 graduated from Bowdoin College, receiving an A.B. degree cum laude in German, chemistry and biology. At college he also was a member of the varsity football team and president of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

In 1935, he received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University and following that was a surgical intern with the Baltimore City Hospitals in 1936 and a research fellow with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1937. Prior to World War II, he was on the staff of Notre Dame Memorial Hospital in Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada. His experiences there are recounted in his recent book, "Snowshoe & Lancet."

During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the Medical Corps. Most of his service was in the European Theatre where he was decorated for meritorious service in connection with his work for the Typhus Commission. The work with the Typhus Commission took him to a number of countries in southern Europe and Africa during the latter stages of the war. During the last six months of the war, he served with the partisan forces in Yugoslavia and he pioneered typhus control in that country.

Immediately after World War II, while still in the Army, he served as a consultant to SHAEF and subsequently was honorably discharged as a lieutenant colonel. Following the war, he briefly served as medical director for Notre Dame Memorial Hospital. He left after a short term there and took on special projects with the CIA. He continued to work for the CIA until 1964. His official comment on this portion of his career was always "No comment."

He then engaged himself in medical research until 1969. From 1969 through 1979, he was in the private practice of medicine in Hartsdale, N.Y. In 1979, he "retired" and moved to Eliot.

Upon his retirement, he maintained an extensive correspondence and authored a considerable body of poetry. He was a board member and then president of the Visiting Nurse Services of Southern Maine. He was a member of the Eliot Historical Society as well as the Friends of the William Fogg Library. He was also a member of the Great Works Regional Land Trust in South Berwick, as well as the Society for the Preservation of New Hampshire Forests.

He was a proprietor of the Portsmouth Athenaeum. He served on the Eliot Zoning Board of Appeals and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Eliot. In addition to the organizations already mentioned, he was active in many other groups and societies in the region and throughout the country.

He was predeceased by his longtime friend and companion, Robert W. Olson, who died in 1996.

He is survived by a nephew, Benjamin Van Dekker, and a niece, Jan Dekker, as well as several cousins and many good friends.

He was also predeceased by his sister, Katherine Ecke, and his brother, Albert Dekker, who was a well-known actor in both films and on Broadway.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, Society for the Preservation of New Hampshire Forests and the Visiting Nurse Services of Southern Maine.

Jeannette M. Hadley

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Jeannette M. Hadley passed away at Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Fort Lauderdale on March 5, 2001, following a short illness.

She was born in Wells, Maine, on Feb. 27, 1914. She resided in Wells and Lake Worth, Fla., until her marriage to N. Paul Desjardins. They resided in Portsmouth, N.H. He died in 1956 and she later married Otis N. Hadley. They resided in Rye Beach, N.H., and Hollywood, Fla. He also preceded her in death. She was a resident of Pompano Beach since 1980.

She was the owner/operator of Jeannette's Sea Shore Shoppe in Rye Beach for many years, retiring in 1975.

She is survived by one son, Dr. Ronald P. Desjardins of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; three stepchildren, Guy Hadley of Orlando, Brad Hadley of Raleigh, N.C., and Sharon Gross of York, Maine; several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

HADLEY - Jeannette M. Hadley, of Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth and Rye Beach, died March 5, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth, Wednesday, May 30, at 11 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. If desired, memorials may be made to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 1216 2nd St., S.W., Rochester, MN 55902. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Peter L. Chaggaris

HAMPTON - Peter L. Chaggaris, 67, of Hampton, the owner and operator of Spartan Security Systems of Boston, Mass., for 38 years, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001.

He was the son of the late Louis and Stella (Angelakis) Chaggaris. He was a native of Lynn, Mass., and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1952 and Northeastern University in 1957 with a degree in engineering.

He served as a captain in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Korea and Japan, and was awarded a commendation ribbon.

Prior to starting his own business in 1963, he was employed by RCA in Needham, Mass., and was operations manager for Gamewell Manufacturing in Newton, Mass.

An avid collector of vintage cars and treasures, his hobbies included music, films, electronics and shopping.

He leaves his wife of 41 years, Cynthia (Collins) Chaggaris of Hampton; his sister, Betty C. Eliopoulos of Swampscott, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Collins and Patricia Cloon, both of Hampton, and Ellen Roughsedge of Wolfeboro; several beloved nephews; three grandnieces; and one grandnephew.

CHAGGARIS - Peter L. Chaggaris, 67, of Hampton, died May 23, 2001. Services will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Rev. Franklin Woodruff Thurston

EAST KINGSTON - The Rev. Franklin Woodruff Thurston, 83, of Giles Road, died suddenly on Saturday, May 26, 2001, after a long illness at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born on June 13, 1917, in Water Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late Morgan Goodrich Thurston and Ethel (Woodruff) Thurston.

Growing up, he was active with the Eagle Scouts. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va., Class of 1939. In 1943, he graduated from Drew Seminary in Madison, N.J. He resided in the New Jersey and New York area for 40 years.

In those years, he served as a preacher as a former member of the Northern New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served at the Westtown Methodist Church in Westtown, N.Y., the Federated Church of Chester, N.J., the Trinity Methodist Church of Clifton, N.J., and the Grace Church of Kearny, N.J.; served as associate superintendent of Goodwill Industries in Newark, N.J.; served at Trinity Methodist Church in Rahway, N.J., the Archer Memorial Methodist Church in Allendale, N.J., and the Calvary United Methodist Church in Dumont, N.J.; and was instrumental in starting a creative living center in Allendale, N.J.

He retired and moved to New Milford, Conn., where he spent the next nine years living and working as the minister of calling for the First Congregational Church of New Milford. In 1989, he moved to Exeter, where he became an active member of the Congregational Church of Exeter, and was a former minister of visitation for the church. He and his wife had lived with their daughter in East Kingston since September 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Muriel (Brust) Thurston of East Kingston; two daughters, Lynne Kuhn of East Kingston and Sandra Thurston of Manchester; one son, Richard Thurston of North Haven, Conn.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

THURSTON - The Rev. Franklin W. Thurston of Giles Road, East Kingston, died on May 26, 2001. There are no calling hours. Private services will be held for the family at the funeral home. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Exeter. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Centenary Fund and Preacher's Aide Society, 22 Madison Ave., Madison, NJ 07940-2099; or the Third Century Building Fund of the Congregational Church of Exeter, P.O. Box 97, Exeter, NH 03833. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.
