Arthur Thorndike Roche

HAMPTON - Arthur Thorndike Roche, 87, formerly of Rye, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Partridge House in Hampton, where he resided for the last year.

He was the widower of the late Ruth (Bement) Roche, who died in 1971, and the late Nataline (Hale) Roche who died in 1985.

Born in Wakefield, Mass., he attended the Mitchell Preparatory School, Virginia Military Institute, and Boston University where he studied manufacturing engineering and business management. He retired from management in the research division of United Shoe Machinery Corp., Beverly, Mass., in 1976, and had been a senior engineer in management at Draper Corp. in Hopedale, Mass., from 1954 to 1958.

He was a post-war consultant to the Navy in Providence, R.I., and division manager at Barbour Stockwell Co., Cambridge, Mass., where he began his engineering career in 1933.

As a young man, he was an avid horseback rider, competing in many areas of the sport. During his school and postgraduate years he enjoyed foxhunting and polo, a joy he shared with his family on numerous occasions. When he could no longer travel for business by train, he took up the hobby of model railroad building to fill the gap. He also golf, gardening and a love of reading.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Roche of Portsmouth, Elizabeth R. Curtis of Pocasset, Mass., and Barbara R. Eldridge of Monument Beach, Mass. His son, Geoffrey T. Roche, died in 1975. He leaves behind two granddaughters and seven grandsons.

ROCHE - Arthur T. Roche, 87, formerly of Rye, died May 25, 2001. He will be buried next to his wives and son at a private graveside ceremony in Winchester, Mass. At the request of the family, please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Marlene E. Bennett

EPPING - Marlene E. (Moore) Bennett, 68, of 290 Calef Highway, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Exeter on May 13, 1933, the beloved daughter of the late Roger I. Moore and Muriel E. (Greenwood) Gould of Hampton Falls. She moved to Epping in 1987, after residing in Hampton for 55 years.

She was a graduate of Hampton Academy, Class of 1952.

She was a devoted mother and homemaker.

In addition to her mother and stepfather, Robert H. Gould of Hampton Falls, she is survived by her husband of 39 years, Philip P. Bennett of Epping; two sons, Kenneth A. Dronsfield and his wife, Debbie, of Putnam Hall, Fla., and Robert G. Dronsfield and high wife, Judi, of North Hampton; four daughters, Terry L. Yeaton and her husband, John, of Hampton, Laurie A. Dufour and her husband, Jon, of Hampton, Sue E. Tufts of Berwick, Maine, and Beth T. Merola of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; one brother, Neil I. Moore and his wife, Lorice, of Kensington; one sister, Donna R. Ricker of North Hampton; one stepsister, Tracey Fox of Maine; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant brother, Kenneth Moore in 1936.

BENNETT - Marlene E. (Moore) Bennett of 290 Calef Highway, Epping, died May 27, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery in Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Hampton United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Mrs. Cora Pearl (Calhoun) Williams

ELIOT, Maine - Mrs. Cora Pearl (Calhoun) Williams, 83, wife of William Howard Williams, of 148 Marshwood Estates, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the Main Stay Nursing Home in Sanford.

Born June 11, 1917, in Boystown, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Perley and Loretta M. (Bruce)Calhoun.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a registered nurse at the former York Harbor Hospital in York Harbor.

She was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Case of Ontario, Canada, and Catherine Walsh of York Harbor; and one brother, Vaun Calhoun of Boystown, Canada.

WILLIAMS - Mrs. Cora Peal (Calhoun) Williams, 83, of 148 Marshwood Estates, Eliot, Maine, died May 27, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Nancy Joyce (Wheeler) Seagren

NEW CASTLE - Nancy Joyce (Wheeler) Seagren, of 19 Walbach St., died Friday, May 25, 2001, after a courageous 12-year battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 10, 1944, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Norman Robert Wheeler and the late Sally May (Redcliffe) Wheeler. She attended Worcester schools and spent time working in Boston and Washington D.C., before moving to New Hampshire.

She owned and operated Mill Yard Interiors in Manchester during the 1970s. In 1978, she moved to New Castle and became involved in activities on the Seacoast. She was executive director of Pro Portsmouth in 1980-81. In addition to event planning, she promoted the arts as general director of the Pontine Movement Theatre in 1982-83.

Through the years, she has owned and operated several downtown Portsmouth businesses: Pure Temptation gifts, the Federal Cigar Store, the Depot Restaurant, Significant Events Catering and Favorite Things gift baskets.

She leaves her husband, Leonard A. Seagren, whom she married in 1980. She has also deeply touched all those who have worked and played with her.

SEAGREN - Nancy Joyce (Wheeler) Seagren, of 19 Walbach St., New Castle, died May 25, 2001. A memorial service (celebration of life) will be held in mid-June at her beloved Bethany Church in Greenland. Arrangements will be announced at a later date. It is her wish that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Nancy J. Seagren Fund to benefit her charitable interests in the Seacoast, including services for children and animals. Such donations should be directed to the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Assistance with the arrangements was made by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Doris S. Golter

KITTERY, Maine - Memorial services for Doris S. Golter, 96, of 33 Oak Terrace, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with services at St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. Timothy T. Rich, rector, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Jennifer Hanley. Dianne Colby Dean was the pianist, and the vocalist was Angelynne Hinson.

In attendance were members of the church, including representatives from the Altar Guild.

Burial was in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Ann W. Stevenson, associate rector of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Frederick H. Hart Sr.

YORK, Maine - Frederick Hayward Hart Sr., 92, of York, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at York Hospital. Born April 5, 1909, in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late George T. and Mable H. (Hayward) Hart. He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School. He went on to graduate from Northeastern University and then continued his education and obtained an associate's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

For many years he worked as a partner for the Macomber Looms and then owned and operated the Frederick H. Hart Co. Manufacturers Representatives of York, which he started in Nahant, Mass.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York, the St. Aspinquid Lodge AF and AM, Sutton Chapter, the Zebolum Council, Olivet Comandery and the Alleppo Temple of Shrine of Lynn, Mass.

He was married 63 years ago on Christmas Day in Lynn, Mass., to the former Dorothea Smith, who predeceased him in 1998.

He is survived by a son, Frederick H. Hart II; his wife, Linda, of York; and two daughters, Alexandra Wildey and her husband, George, of Veazie, Maine, and Wendy Brunet and her husband, Clarence, of East Rochester, N.H.; his beloved eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

HART - Frederick Hart Sr., 92, of York, Maine, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2001, at the First Parish Congregational Church in York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York, ME 03909, or to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery, Maine.

Geraldine Frazier

KITTERY, Maine - Geraldine Frazier, 77, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Born June 10, 1924, in Boston, Mass., she was a daughter of Walter K. and Gertrude T. (Blasser) Hallett. For 20 years, she and her family lived in North Berwick, and in August of last year she moved to Kittery.

She was a devoted wife, mother and housekeeper, who took great pride in her home and family. She was an accomplished artist and was a longtime member of the Durham, N.H., Art Association.

On April 13, 1954, she married Billy Jack Frazier in Catlettsburg, Ky. Her husband predeceased her.

She is survived by three cherished children: Leslie Frazier of Holbrook, Mass., Kenneth Frazier of Nashua, and Karen Frazier of Kittery; her two beloved grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Teddy Barton of Oklahoma; and a brother, Kenneth Hallett of New Jersey.

There will be no funeral service or visitation hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Marjorie Leathe

NORTH HAMPTON - Marjorie Leathe, 57, of North Hampton, died May 23, 2001, at the Edgewood nursing home in Portsmouth.

Survivors include two daughters, Wendy Johnson of Exeter and Heidi Akerman of Rochester; a son, William Nerling of Biloxi, Miss.; and her husband, Norman Leathe, of North Hampton.

Services were held Friday, May 25, 2001, in Manchester. Donations can be sent to the Edgewood Center, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Janice E. Morrill

RYE - Janice Ellen (Tapply) Morrill, 76, of 100 Parsons Road, formerly of Ashby, Mass., died May 29, 2001, in York Hospital, York, Maine, after an illness.

She was born June 23, 1925, in Fitchburg, Mass., daughter of Harry and Ruth (Donaldson) Tapply and lived in Ashby many years before moving to Rye 16 years ago. She was a graduate of Fitchburg High School, Class of 1943, and before retiring several years ago was the secretary for the Burbank Hospital Laboratory for 17 years.

She leaves her husband of 56 years, Phillips B. Morrill; one son, Phillips B. Morrill Jr., of Ashby; three daughters, Heidi R. Morrill of Sandy Ridge, N.C., Robin S. Morrill-Olihovik of Milford, N.H., and Charleen Morrill of Winchendon, Mass.; a sister, Berle Tapply of Fitchburg; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Ferne Jones, who died last year, and a brother, Donaldson Tapply, who died in 1998.

MORRILL - Janice E. Morrill, 76, of Rye, died May 29, 2001. The funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery Ashby, Mass. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001, in the Aubuchon-Moorcroft Funeral Home, 132 Woodland St., Fitchburg, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oncology Department, York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Stella E. Cilley

NEWMARKET - Stella E. Cilley, 91, of Grant Road, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, Fremont.

Born Aug. 25, 1909, in Dixfield, Maine, she was the daughter of Jesse H. and Lydia (Holman) Smith. She had resided in Newmarket since 1930.

She was a graduate of Robinson Seminary, Class of 1926, and Plymouth Normal School, Class of 1928, and received a B.A. from UNH, graduating in 1968.

For 14 years she taught first grade in Epping and Nottingham, and for many years she wrote for several area newspapers.

She was a past master and secretary for the Piscassic Grange in Newfields, a member of the Fair Hearing Council of Newmarket, and an active member of the Rockingham Extension Service.

She was a member of the Baptist Society of the Newmarket Community Church, of which she was treasurer for many years. For 40 years she was the superintendent of the Sunday school program in the Community Church. She was past president and secretary of the Friendly Club and past secretary of the Parish Circle.

She was a past president of the Newmarket Women's Club. She was a former member of the Newmarket Budget Committee and served several terms on the Planning Board, having been a member of the first board.

She was the second lady jurist selected from Newmarket.

Her husband, Norman O. Cilley, died in 1982.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Cilley of Caribou, Maine, Roger Cilley of Barrington, and Robert Cilley of Newmarket; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CILLEY - Stella E. Cilley, 91, of Grant Road, Newmarket, died May 24, 2001. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today from the Newmarket Community Church, with the Rev. David Wuori, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. WHITNEY - Irving Whitney, 79, of Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at York Hospital. Due to a scheduling change, his funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, instead of what was listed in the death notice that ran in this newspaper on Saturday.

Preston P. Burnell

ROCHESTER - Preston Porter Burnell, 54, of Chestnut Hill Road, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

Born March 31, 1947, in Sanford, Maine, he was the son of Lloyd and Phyllis (Sanborn) Burnell. He served with the U.S. Navy.

He resided in Springvale until moving to Rochester 14 years ago. He worked as a tool and die maker for General Electric in Somersworth. He was a member of the American Legion. He loved to play darts, golf and loved his dog, Spunky.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores (Locey) Burnell of Rochester; his mother, Phyllis Burnell; three sons, Kevin P. Burnell of Haverhill, Mass., Steven L. Burnell of Sanford, Maine, and James R. Burnell of Grove City, Ohio; four sisters, Georgianna Huntress of Shapeligh, Maine, Elizabeth Shields of Sanford, Maine, Marilyn Morin of Windham, Maine, and Nancy Hersom of Shapleigh, Maine; one stepson, Duane Gregoire of Rochester; one stepdaughter, Dawn Hunt of Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BURNELL - Preston Porter Burnell, 54, of Chestnut Hill Road, Rochester, died May 28, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Acton, Maine. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society New Hampshire, 360 Route 101, Bedford, NH 03110.

Marlene E. Bennett

EPPING - The funeral for Marlene E. Bennett, 68, of 290 Calef Highway, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were held in the United Methodist Church, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor, officiated. Mary Oliver was the organist and Elizabeth Barcomb was the soloist.

Mrs. Bennett's granddaughters offered words of remembrance and a letter was read by the Rev. Moore that was written by Mrs. Bennett's daughter, Laurie A. Dufour.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Stacy Noyes, Phillip Tufts, Thomas Tufts, David Tilton, Neal Moore Jr. and Eric Peltz.

Jeannette M. Hadley

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Funeral services for Jeannette M. Hadley, of Pompano Beach, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H., with memorial services held at the Immaculate Conception Church, Portsmouth. Father George Desjardins was celebrant, and lector was Ernest C. Desjardins, who also gave the eulogy. Vocalist was Jennifer Saunders and organist was Marion Arnoldy.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Raymond Desjardins.

Peter L. Chaggaris

HAMPTON - The funeral for Peter L. Chaggaris, 67, of 5 Dumas Ave., was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Funeral services were conducted in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Nicholas Kastanas of St. Athanasius Church, Arlington, Mass., and the Rev. Charles Mihos, retired priest from Lynn, Mass, officiated.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Kastanas and Father Mihos. Full military honors were accorded by a detachment of Army personnel from Ft. Drum, N.Y.

The flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Chaggaris' widow, Cynthia M. (Collins) Chaggaris.
