Thomas D. Murphy

EXETER - Thomas D. Murphy, 69, of 307 Friar Tuck Drive, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born June 14, 1931, in Dorchester, Mass., he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Eva (Cooper) Murphy.

He lived for many years in Exeter and was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1950. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 20 years in the painting department and the planning office. Prior to this, he worked for several area painting contractors.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He enjoyed listening to jazz music and playing the drums.

Family members include his wife, Doris E. (Parshley) Murphy of Exeter; two sons, Timothy M. Murphy and Kyle S. Murphy, both of North Carolina; two daughters, Gay-Lynn Harris of North Carolina and Shawn K. Murphy of South Carolina; three stepsons, David M. Breen of Deerfield, Jeffrey A. Breen of Littleton, and Christopher M. Breen of Epsom; two stepdaughters, Robyn E. DesRoches of Farmington and Melanie A. Nichols of Newfields; 26 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stephen C. Murphy of Chelmsford, Mass., and Donald P. Murphy of Billerica, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

MURPHY— Thomas D. Murphy, 69, of 307 Friar Tuck Drive, Exeter, died June 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter, on Friday at 3 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, today (Thursday), from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Charles H. McCaffery

PORTSMOUTH - Charles H. "Chili" McCaffery, 90, of 928 South St., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 8, 1910, he was the son of Harry E. and Mary A. (Moore) McCaffery. He was a proud resident of Portsmouth most of his life.

He was a graduate of the local school system, Class of 1930. He was a widely known boxer in his younger years, having spent some time in Boston at the Arthur Bloom's Gym and was a longtime member of the Veteran Boxing Association, Ring 4, in Boston, as well as a past president of Ring 38.

He was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 30 years in the pipe shop. Upon retirement, he worked many years at the Wentworth by the Sea and later for Ricci Lumber. Most recently, he was a volunteer at The Edgewood Centre.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mary D. "Dot" McCaffery, who died Aug. 27, 2000; and also by his brother, James McCaffery, and his sister, Alicia McIntosh.

Survivors include his three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael D. and Cindy I. McCaffery of Rochester, Charles E. and Dianna F. McCaffery of Merrimack, and John E. McCaffery of Dover; six grandchildren, Sonya Kean and Erin Board of Rochester, Sharyon McCaffery of Dover, Jamie Hamel of Kittery, Maine, Jill Lavoie of Merrimack, and Douglas McCaffery of New Berlin, Wis.; and four great-granddaughters.

McCAFFERY - Charles H. "Chili" McCaffery, 90, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died June 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Dr. Mary E. Tomanio

ELIOT, Maine - Dr. Mary Elizabeth (Dzminowicz) Tomanio, D.C., 82, of Eliot, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Frenchtown, N.J.

Born Oct. 22, 1918, in Danbury, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (Burak) Dzminowicz and the wife of the late Samuel Tomanio.

She lived in Beacon, N.Y., before moving to Eliot 20 years ago. She graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractics in Davenport, Iowa. She owned and operated her own chiropractic practice in Beacon, N.Y., for more than 50 years. She was a founder and board member of the Foundation for the Investigation of Reality.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard Tomanio of Beacon, N.Y., and Ronald and Karen Tomanio, of Eliot; two brothers, John Dzminowicz and Alexander Dzminowicz; four sisters, Anne Kohler, Helen Tierney, Nettie Bezak and Frances Adams; and two granddaughters, Laurel and Julia.

She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Dzminowicz.

TOMANIO - Dr. Mary Elizabeth (Dzminowicz) Tomanio, D.C., 82, of Eliot, Maine, died June 5, 2001. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at the Frenchtown Cemetery in Frenchtown, N.J. Memorial contributions may be made to F.I.R. (Foundation for the Investigation of Reality), 195 Main St., Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements by the W.E. Johnson Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Twp., N.J.

Dennis W. Ury III

LEE - Dennis W. Ury III, formerly of Chicago, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at his mother's home in Lee.

Born Oct. 2, 1959, in New York City, he was the son of Ann (Donovan) Ury of Lee and Dennis W. Ury Jr. of Jersey City, N.J.

He attended the Oyster River schools and the New York High School of Art and Design, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Chicago Art Institute.

A lifelong artist, he established galleries in both Providence and Chicago.

He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Michael J.D. Ury of Lee and Jonathan E. Ury of Eliot, Maine; a sister, Katherine S. Steiger of Brookline, Mass.; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dennis W. Ury of Southampton, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

URY - Dennis W. Ury III, formerly of Chicago, died June 2, 2001, at his mother's home in Lee. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Route 4, Lee, where a memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Family flowers only are requested. Those who desire may make contributions in his memory to the Seacoast Hospice of Exeter, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Donald Howcroft

NEWMARKET - Donald Howcroft, 88, of Maplecrest Drive, died June 7, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

Born Jan. 25, 1913, in Newmarket, he was the son of Herbert and Elizabeth (Kelley) Howcroft and was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

Donald began working at the hydro plant in Newmarket for Newmarket Gas and Electric and then became a meter reader for Public Service of New Hampshire He retired from Public Service at the age of 61.

He was a former member and Assistant Chief of the Newmarket Fire Department and was a former member of Lamprey Aerie #1934 F.O.E. in Newmarket.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Nutting) Howcroft of Newmarket; sons Donald H. Howcroft and Thomas H. Howcroft both of Newfields; daughter Eileen Witham of Newmarket; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

The Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket is assisting with arrangements.

Arthur C. Clough Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur C. Clough Sr., 87, widower of Barbara (Chapman) Clough, of 928 South St., died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

He was born in Portsmouth on July 30, 1913, the son of Arthur B. and Rose J. (O'neil) Clough. Arthur attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1932.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a custodian for the Portsmouth School System.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church of Portsmouth where he had taught religious education; a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; a member of Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star; and served on Portsmouth's Order of DeMolay's Advisory Board. Mr. Clough volunteered much of his time with Portsmouth Youth Recreation and was instrumental in the formation of sports in elementary schools. He conducted many variety shows for over 25 years; he received the Book of Golden Deeds Award given by the Exchange Club; and was Portsmouth's Father of the Year in 1959. Due to his commitment to Portsmouth's youth athletics, Portsmouth's Clough Field and Clough Drive were named after him.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur C. Clough Jr. of Meredith and Richard P. Clough of Portsmouth; one daughter, Mary R. Ertl of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Vernon L. Clough, Robert S. Clough, Roland E. Clough, Arthur C. Clough III, and Annette R. Bacon; five great-grandchildren; his twin sister, Daisy White of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur was predeceased by his sister Rosette Fernald.

CLOUGH - Arthur C. Clough Sr., 87, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died June 6, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services by St. Johns Lodge No. 1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven School Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o Principal, Little Harbor School, 50 Clough Drive, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Kiyo (Yonaha) Jones

PORTSMOUTH - Kiyo (Yonaha) Jones, 75, of 451 Peverly Hill Road, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 28, 1925 on Miyako Island, of the Ryukyu Islands, in Japan, the daughter of Kunio and Mutsu Yonaha. She was the widow of John H. Jones Jr., who died June 12, 1997. She had lived in Portsmouth since 1958.

Mrs. Jones was employed at Capezio's and Artisan Factory Outlet in Portsmouth. She volunteered for several years at the Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center.

She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved creating needlepoint photo albums for them and filling them with photographs that she took. She also enjoyed gardening and watching sports.

She is survived by eight brothers and sisters, Fumi, Yoschon, Muchun, Yoshio, Shigio, Kaziko, and Hideo of Japan, and Sachiko Nixon of Hampton, Va.; six children, John Jones and his wife Jeanne of Middletown, Del., Kazue Langham and her husband Steve of Cohasset, Mass., Carol Iber and her husband Jon of Barrington, Gene Jones and his wife Debra of Greenland, Charlie Jones and his wife Michelle of South Berwick, Maine, and Sallie McKenney and her husband Donald of Dover; numerous cousins; nephews; nieces; and ten grandchildren, Justin, Ashlee, Kevin, Brian, Sarah, Nathan, Nicole, Evan, Robert and Kristen.

JONES - Kiyo (Yonaha) Jones, 75, of 451 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth, died June 6, 2001. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Robert B. Grant

BERWICK, Maine - Robert B. Grant, 75, of Long Hall Drive, Berwick, died June 5, 2001, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Portsmouth, Jan. 22, 1926, the son of George H. and Flossie (Eldridge) Grant. He had lived in Port Orange, Fla., for 11 years prior to moving to Berwick.

Robert retired in 1987 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he had been employed for 22 years. During his years at the Yard, he was a mechanic and a Crane Scheduler.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the V.F.W. He loved woodworking and bird watching.

Members of the family include his wife Teresina C. (Bosse) Grant of Berwick; a son and his wife, Daniel W. and Suzanne Grant of Kittery, Maine; his daughters and their husbands, Gail M. and Ronald Stewart of North Berwick, Maine, and Robin and Lonnie Monroe of Berwick; two sisters, Beverly A. Dow of Greenland, and Frances E. Betton of Orange City, Fla; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 11 a.m. in Central Cemetery, Rye. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the South Berwick Senior Center, South Berwick, Maine.

Arrangements are under the direction of the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine.

John E. McCarthy

PLAISTOW - John E. McCarthy, 98, of 130 Main St., died Wednesday evening June 6, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Born in Newton, N.H., he attended local schools. Mr. McCarthy first worked as a wood heel turner at the former Russell Wood Heel Co., in Plaistow. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Navy in Somersworth. He also worked at Western Electric Co. in North Andover. Most recently, Mr. McCarthy worked as a mutual teller at Rockingham Park, Salem, Suffolk Downs, Revere, Mass., and Yankee Greyhound, Seabrook, retiring at age 76.

Mr. McCarthy was the oldest continuous member of Holy Angels Parish of Plaistow.

He was the husband of the late Ethel (Ray) McCarthy, who died in 1980, and father of the late Virginia Miller and the late John E. McCarthy Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Thelma Stewart of West Newbury, Mass., and Joanne McCarthy of Plaistow; also three grandchildren, Wendy (Miller) Hume, Stephen Miller and Glenn Miller, all of North Hampton; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

McCARTHY - John E. McCarthy, 98, of 130 Main St., Plaistow, died June 6, 2001. Relatives and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery. Donations in his name may be made to the Plaistow Fire Department Rescue Squad, 27 Elm St., Plaistow, or to Holy Angels Food Pantry, c/o Holy Angels Parish, 8 Atkinson Depot Road, Plaistow.

Walter Gordon Smith Jr.

YORK - Walter Gordon Smith Jr., 78, of Indian Trail, York, husband of Lois P. (Boynton) Smith, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.

He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Augusta, Maine, son of Walter G. and Iva (Cunningham) Smith. He graduated from Cony High School.

Mr. Smith, a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, served in the Air Force for 28 ½ years. He was one of the first of eight to be awarded the rank of Senior Master Sgt. when that rank was created, and one of the first to be named Chief Master Sgt. Mr. Smith was a Base Sgt. Major at Langley AFB, Va., from 1968-1971.

He was a member of the Mt. Olivett Masonic Lodge in Washington, Maine and Past Master of the Hunsruck Lodge, Hahn AFB in Germany. He was a Past Patron of the Nahe Chapter, OES, a member of the Knights Templar, Amarillo Commandery, R.A.M. of Amarillo, Tex., past Commander of the Ramsdell-Rogers Post of the American Legion in York, a cub scout leader and an Air Force Sunday School Teacher.

Mr. Smith was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing his passion for gardening with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Lois (Boynton) Smith of York; two daughters, Leisa and her husband Frank Muccio of Kittery, and Lori Koester of Portsmouth; son Jeffrey and his wife Christie Smith of Manchester; sister Fannie Robinson of Augusta, Maine; eight grandchildren, Edward Smith, Michelle Smith, Olivia Smith and Alex Higgins, all of Manchester, Emily Koester of Portsmouth, Anthony Muccio, Zeland Muccio and Frank Muccio, of Kittery.

SMITH - CM Sgt. Walter G. Smith Jr. USAF Ret., died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Kittery, Maine. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, Maine 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Virginia Margeson

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Virginia Margeson, 92, widow of Ralph C. Margeson, died June 2, 2001, at Manor Care of Dunedin, Fla.

Mrs. Margeson, who was born in Newport News, Va., formerly resided in New Castle and moved to Fla. in 1990.

She was a volunteer for Strawbery Banke and for the Portsmouth Hospital. She was an avid reader and loved playing cards and needlework.

Mrs. Margeson is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Harrison of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, Ralph Harrison and James Harrison, both of Minneapolis, Minn., John Harrison of St. Paul, Minn., Ann James of Brainerd, Minn., and Kenton Harrison of Rochester, Minn., and eight great grandchildren.

Claire ("Dolly") A. Haddock

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS, Fla. - Claire ("Dolly") A. Haddock, 69, of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, passed away unexpectedly on June 5, 2001.

She was born on July 25, 1931, in Meredith, N.H., to Ivers Allen and Olive Allen. She married her childhood sweetheart, John H. Haddock, on July 25, 1949, and followed her beloved husband during his Army military career that included deployments in Europe, tours of duty in the Korean War and Vietnam War and various assignments in the United States.

Dolly and her family moved to Portsmouth in 1971, following her husband's retirement from the Army. She taught special education in area schools for more than 25 years, including positions at Hampton Academy, Little Harbour School and the Maude J. Trefethen School. Her students and fellow teachers will best remember Dolly for her tremendous spirit of giving, unending patience and love for teaching. Some of her dearest friends and fondest memories were from her teaching days.

Following her retirement from teaching, Dolly channeled her energies into volunteer work for local organizations. She loved her work and friends at the Portsmouth Garden Club, including playing the role of Mrs. Claus for the Urban Forestry Center's Festival of Trees. Dolly also volunteered her time and talents at The Ritchie McFarland Children's Center.

However, Dolly's greatest joy came from her role as a wife and a mother to her six children. The following words as written by her departed husband, expressed this most eloquently: "My darling bride, you are my whole world, life and reason for living. Without you, I would be nothing. You have been my source of strength and inspiration. You have shown by example how to be an outstanding mother. You made incomparable sacrifices for me and our children. I will always be indebted to you."

Dolly was predeceased by her loving husband, John H. Haddock, in 1992; her sister, Jeanne Morrill, in 1994; and her brother, Ernest Ladd, in 2000.

Dolly will be sadly missed by her six children and their families: Leah Many, her husband Danny and their children, Charles, John and Claire; Theah H. Stockton and her children, Tisha and Aleesa Jo; Allen B. Haddock and his wife, Sparkle; Selena H. Clarke; John H. Haddock Jr. and his fiancé Pam; and Jim Haddock and his wife, Yvette. She will also be lovingly remembered by her beloved sister-in-law, Alice Ladd, her brother-in-law, William "Timer" Morrill, and many nieces and nephews. Dolly's family and her friends in N.H. and Fla. will miss her wonderful smile, her sense of humor and indomitable spirit.

HADDOCK - Claire ("Dolly") A. Haddock, 69, of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., died on June 5, 2001. Interment will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Arlington National Cemetery. A celebration of Dolly's life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of gifts and flowers, donations may be made in Dolly's name to the NHSPCA, located on Greenland Avenue, Stratham, N.H.
