Thelma Drake Barrett

RYE - Thelma Drake Barrett, 98, of Rye, and formerly of Long Island, Maine, passed away Friday, June 8, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Greenville, Maine, Feb. 6, 1903, the daughter of Herbert and Eva (Witham) Drake.

She will always be remembered for her kind and generous nature, never having a bad word to say about anyone and always making everyone feel special and loved. Her home was always the gathering place for generations of her adoring family.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Herbert E. Barrett, daughters Charlotte Nowaczyk and Dolores Lovejoy, son Herbert E. Barrett Jr., and brother Boyd Drake.

Survivors include her daughter Carol Kennedy of Rye; her sister Melba Drake of Rye; 15 grandchildren; daughter-in-law Dorothy Barrett of Port Arthur, Tex.; and several nieces and nephews.

BARRETT - Thelma Drake Barrett, 98, of Rye, died June 8, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Central Cemetery, Rye. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, N.H. 03833. Arrangements are by the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Mr. Murray Lawrence Mason

KITTERY, Maine - Mr. Murray Lawrence Mason, 83, of Kittery, died on Friday, June 8, 2001, at the York Hospital.

He was born March 26, 1918, in Greenland, N.H., the son of the late Joseph Everett and Effie May (Thompson) Mason. He attended local schools. In 1939, he moved to Kittery where he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an electrical welder and pipe welder.

In 1945 he enlisted in the Navy, and upon discharge returned to work at the shipyard until retiring in 1973.

He was a lifetime member of the Kittery VFW and York American Legion Post 56.

He was the husband of Dolores (Laird), whom he married on Oct. 31, 1938, in North Berwick.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his two sons, William Mason of Lee, N.H., and Murray Mason Jr. of Rye, N.H.; two daughters, Dolores Anne Robbeloth of Blandon, Fla., and Rose M. Maloney of Wells; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorthea Junkins of Kittery and Myrtle Grant of Stratham, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON - Funeral services for Murray Lawrence Mason, 83, of Kittery, Maine, who died Friday at York Hospital, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, will officiate. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday. A graveside committal service and burial will take place in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery.

James J. Kelley

EXETER - The funeral for James J. Kelley, 78, formerly of Exeter, was held on Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

Burial followed in the N.H. State Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen with committal prayers offered by the Rev. William Babineau, pastor of St. Paul's Church in Franklin.

The U.S. flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Kelley's son, Robert J. Kelley, by naval personnel from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Pallbearers were Michael Rush, Eric Rush, Stephen Kelley, Brock Elhers and Jason Hanson.

Thomas D. Murphy

EXETER - Services for Thomas D. Murphy, 69, of 307 Friar Tuck Drive, were held on Friday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home in Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church with the Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, officiating. Organist was Denise Kelly and soloist was John Kelly.

Burial followed in Exeter Cemetery with committal prayers offered by Father Marc. Pallbearers were David Breen, Andy Nichols, Jason Nichols, Christopher Breen, Josh Murphy and James Murphy.

Frank M. Hoyt

HAMPTON - Frank M. Hoyt, 68, of 14 Wingate St., died on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 21, 1932, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late Laurence Bracket and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Lynch) Hoyt. Raised in Hampton, he resided many years in Newburyport, Mass., before returning to Hampton in 1984.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was the franchise owner of Avis Rent-a-Car of New Hampshire.

He was a 1950 graduate of Hampton Academy and a 1959 graduate of Northeastern University. He was a world traveler, loved history, and avid fly-fisherman, and a member of the Fly Tiers Association. He was an active supporter of the N.H. National Guard and Air Guard ESGR, or Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, program.

Survivors include his companion of several years, Irene J. Frazier of Hampton; two daughters, Lori A. Ripa of Exeter and Wendy L. Cadigan of Newburyport, Mass.; two grandchildren, Logan and Lily Ripa, both of Exeter; one brother, Alden Samuel Hoyt of Hampton; a sister, Priscilla Triggs Weeks of Hampton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

HOYT - Frank M. Hoyt of 14 Wingate St., Hampton, died on June 9, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Foundation, Alumni Drive, Hampton, NH 03842.

Barbara C. Herrera

FARMINGTON - Memorial services for Barbara C. Herrera, 39, of 18 Orchard Circle, were held on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. Father Gordon Allen officiated. Words of remembrance were given by daughter Jenny Herrera.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Allen.

Murray L. Mason

Orintha M. Chick

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Orintha M. "Rinkey" Chick, 98, of Rogers Street, were held on Friday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with services at the North Congregational Church in Market Square. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated. Gary MacDonald was organist.

In attendance were members f the church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Women's City Club, Garden Club, and the Bridget Graffort Club.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Elizabeth E. Standish

ELIOT, Maine - Elizabeth E. Standish, 83, of Main Street, died on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born in Friendship, a daughter of Willie and Cora Starrett Osier. She attended school in Friendship.

She was a former member of Friendship Advent Christian Church and Portsmouth Advent Christian Church; and was a current member of the Eliot Advent Christian Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, board member and deaconess in each church.

She most recently had been employed as an office manager at Eliot Electric. She enjoyed gardening, walking along the Piscataqua River, trips to Isles of Shoals, and spending time at York Beach.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred E. Standish Jr., in 1998; a son, Michael J. Standish, in 1963; and two sisters, Margaret Partridge and Cynthia Osier.

Survivors include a brother, James Osier of Augusta; three sons, Gilbert A. Standish of Brownville, Alfred E. Standish of Milford, N.H., and Leo E. Osier of Meredith, N.H.; one daughter, Leona J. Fisher of Eliot; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

STANDISH - Elizabeth E. Standish, 83, of Eliot, Maine, died June 9, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today (Monday) at Eliot Advent Christian Church, 90 Pleasant St., Eliot, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. A committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Harbor Cemetery in Friendship, Maine. Arrangements are by Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Calvin H. Taylor

KITTERY, Maine - Calvin H. Taylor, 73, of Wainwright Avenue, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born March 6, 1928, in Sanford, Fla., he was a son of Aldeen and Annabelle Hinsin Taylor and attended local schools. He graduated from Sanford, Fla., High School.

Directly out of high school, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving as an electrician and retiring as a chief electrician after 20 years.

He worked as an electrician at Simplex Wire and Cable for 18 years and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 444 of Portsmouth, N.H., and was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Taylor of Kittery; a stepson, Kenneth Turcotte of Pikeville, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Carla Whiting of Dover, N.H.; a brother, Aldeen Taylor Jr. of Florida; his nieces, Suzanne and Elizabeth of Florida and Martha Taylor of York, Christina Thompson of Vermont, and Michelle Pace of Hampton, N.H.; grandchildren Matthew and Marla Turcotte, Melinda Canterbury and Tina Pelchat; great-grandchildren Seth and Sydney Turcotte, Christen, Brianna and Alyssa Turcotte, and Gareth and Emily Pelchat.

TAYLOR - Calvin H. Taylor, 73, of Wainwright Avenue, Kittery, Maine, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at St. Raphael Church, Kittery. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, NY, NY 10019. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Judith Anne (Moore) Clark

TUCSON, Ariz. - Judith Anne (Moore) Clark, 61, of Tucson, and formerly of Exeter, N.H., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, after a lengthy struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Born Feb. 29, 1940, in Portsmouth, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Leonard W. Moore and Ruth V. (Fogg) Moore.

She married Thomas A Clark of Portsmouth, N.H., on Oct. 26, 1963.

She worked for the Badger Farms Creameries and the Allied New Hampshire Gas Co. in Portsmouth before moving to Boston to work for the Prudential Insurance Co. In 1988, she was diagnosed with MS and had to leave the employ of the Seabrook Bank and Trust Co.

She was a member of the Rainbow Girls, and after high school she just enjoyed life, the beach, the woods, wild and domestic flowers, animals (cats in particular), and everything else Mother Nature had to offer.

In addition to her husband, survivors include twin daughters, Jennifer A. Clark of Dover, N.H., and Amanda J. Clark-Sluis of Fountain Valley, Calif.; a son, Matthew B. Clark of Manchester, Conn.; sisters Marilyn J. Blaisdell and Cheryl J. Tackett, both of Stratham, N.H.; a brother, Calvin L. Moore of Las Vegas, Nev.; and granddaughter Emerson Kate Sluis of Fountain Valley, Calif.; three nieces and two nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Doris Moore Blanc.

No memorial service is planned at this time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Desert Southwest Chapter, 315 South 48th St., Tempe, AZ 85281.

M. Rose Demers

NEWMARKET - M. Rose Demers, 77, of New Road, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare in the presence of her loving family and friends, after a lengthy illness.

Born March 4, 1924, in Newmarket, she was the daughter of WIlliam J. and Laura (Jalbert) St. Hilaire. She was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

For 20 years, she worked as a press operator at the Kingston-Warren Corp. in Newfields. She also worked at Sam Smith Shoe and Royce Shoe, both in Newmarket, and General Electric in Somersworth.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She derived great pleasure from her family.

Her husband of 53 years, Raymond "Moe" Demers, died this past February.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Brown and her husband, Irving "Jack" Brown III, and Nathalie "Nappy" Crowley and her husband, Ronald Crowley, all of Newmarket; four grandchildren, Angela Stafford and her husband, Michael, and their children, Connor and Heather; Jessica Bird and her husband, Ron, and daughter Kendall; Mathew Russell and his wife, Dawn, and son Lucas; and Nathan Russell and his wife, Michelle, and son, Cody; one brother, John St. Hilaire of San Jose, Calif.; four sisters, Jacqueline Ouellette, Nancy Leary and Patricia Weston, all of Greenland, and Joanne Graves of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her sister, Doris Pohopek.

DEMERS - M. Rose Demers, 77, of New Road, Newmarket, died June 8, 2001. No services are planned at this time. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Should friends desire, memorials may be made in her memory to Exeter Healthcare, 4 Alumni Drive, Exeter, NH 03833.. The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, is assisting with arrangements.

Carl Lewis Tomes

YORK BEACH, Maine - Carl Lewis Tomes, 73, of Long Beach Avenue, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the Harbor Home in York Harbor.

Born July 25, 1927, in Shrewsbury, Mass., he was the son of the late Dr. Rudolph Tomes of Kittery, and Nora (Foley) Barry of Quincy, Mass.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He received an associate's degree from Boston University in 1950. At the age of 40, he returned to BU, and received a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in counseling from the University of Southern Maine.

He taught at the Holy Rosary School in Rochester, N.H., and later became a guidance counselor in the Milton, N.H., school system.

After living in Kittery for 20 years, he moved to York Beach and opened the Golden Pineapple restaurant, which he operated for 10 years with his wife, Caroline.

In addition to his wife, M. Caroline (Peterson) Tomes of York Beach, survivors include one daughter, Terril Fernald of Eliot; two grandsons, Jansen J. Fernald of Cambridge, Mass.; Timothy W. Fernald II of Dover, N.H.; one granddaughter, Jennifer C. Fernald of Eliot; and one great-granddaughter, Celine.

TOMES - Carl Lewis Tomes, 73, of Long Beach Avenue, York Beach, Maine, died June 10, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Christopher Church. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Harbor Home, Norwood Farms Road, York Harbor, ME 03911. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
