Mrs. Alice Harriet (Wainwright) Blades

SAUGUS, Mass. - Mrs. Alice Harriet (Wainwright) Blades, 92, formerly of Glen Park Avenue, died Sunday evening June 10, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born, Jan. 9, 1909, in Gloucester, Mass., and raised in East Boston, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Lottie (Schwartz) Wainwright. She was a resident of Saugus for 68 years before moving to Exeter three years ago. In 1926, she received certificates in the business course of the Commercial High School.

A longtime member of the East Saugus United Methodist Church where, she was for years in charge of sending remembrance cards to shut-ins, the ill, and the bereaved in the church's membership. She was also formerly an active participant in the Women's Society, where her peanut butter cookies were always in demand at the bake sales.

She was the wife of the late Cyrus R. Blades. She married Aug. 16, 1931.

Survivors include one son, Robert C. Blades of Groveland, Mass.; a daughter, Dorothy Burwell of Exeter; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly A. Harmer; her sister, Doris Hoy, and brother, Charles Wainwright.

BLADES - Alice Harriet (Wainwright) Blades, 92, of Exeter, formerly of Saugus, Mass., died June 10, 2001. Wife of the late Cyrus R. Blades; loving mother of Robert C. Blades of Groveland, Mass., Dorothy Burwell of Exeter, N.H.; and the late Beverly A. Harmer; sister of the late Charles Wainwright and Doris Hoy. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus. Donations in her memory may be made to the East Saugus United Methodist Church, 81 Chestnut St., Saugus, MA 01906.

Arthur C. Clough Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Arthur C. Clough Sr., 87, of 928 South St., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Monday, with services at the North Congregational Church in Market Square.

The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated.

Grandson Nicholas Bacon sang "Ave Maria." Words of remembrance were given by Roland E. Clough, grandson; friends Peter Torrey and Bruce Pafford; and Arthur C. Clough III, grandson.

Organist was Gary MacDonald.

In attendance were members of the North Congregational Church; representatives from the Portsmouth school system; members of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; members of Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star; and members of Portsmouth Order of DeMolay.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Bearers were Arthur C. Clough III, Roland Clough, Vernon L. Clough, Robert S. Clough, Peter Torrey and John Bacon.

Masonic services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Sunday evening by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, conducted by William Sawyer, Wor. Master; and including Donald L. Stevens, P.M.; Calvin Wilder, P.M.; Verne Anderson, junior warden; Edgar Anderson, treasurer, P.M.; Peter Newbury, P.M.; Glen Reid Gordon, P.M.; A. Kenneth Day, chaplain, P.M.; Alan M. Robinson, P.M.; Rodney A Robinson, P.M.; Wallace Nelson, tyler. Also assisting in services was Robert Lawson Sutherland Jr., P.M., of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth.

Elizabeth E. Standish

ELIOT, Maine - Funeral services for Elizabeth E. Standish, 83, of Eliot, who died June 9, 2001, in Portsmouth, were held Tuesday morning at the Eliot Advent Christian Church. Reverend Sean Donnelly, Pastor, conducted services. A graveside committal service and burial followed in Harbor Cemetery in Friendship, Maine. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Thelma D. Barrett

RYE - The funeral for Thelma Drake Barrett, 98, of 149 Perkins Road, was held Monday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted at the graveside in the Central Cemetery. The Rev. Roland Kimball of Hampton officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by grandchildren.

Frank M. Hoyt

HAMPTON - The funeral for Frank M. Hoyt, 68, of 14 Wingate St., was held Tuesday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. A cross was placed on the casket by Mr. Hoyt's daughter Wendy L. Cadigan. A reading was offered by Susan M. Hoyt. The gifts were presented to the altar by his daughters Wendy L. Cadigan and Lori A. Ripa. Words of remembrance were offered by Ted Hoyt and Robert Hamel. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father MacKenzie. The flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Wendy L. Cadigan and Lori A. Ripa. Pallbearers were Fred Durham, Frank Lombardi, Rick McCloskey, Jerry Jannetti, Ted Hoyt and John Jannetti.

Murray L. Mason

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Murray L. Mason, 83, of Kittery, who died June 8, 2001, at York Hospital, were held Tuesday morning at the Wilson-Cooper funeral home of Kittery. The Reverend George Wardwell of the Kittery Point Baptist Church conducted services. a graveside committal service and burial with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, took place at Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Commander James Fitzpatrick of the York American Legion, Post 56, paid tribute to Mr. Mason Monday evening at the funeral home. A delegation from the VFW Auxiliary were present at the funeral services. Pallbearers were William Mason, Robert Mason, Murray Mason Jr., Edward Robbeloth, and Herbert Junkins.

A time of fellowship and refreshments followed at the Weathervane Restaurant in Kittery.

Sarah Bateman

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Sarah (Avedisian) Bateman, 86, widow of Roy W. Bateman, of 37 Baycliff Road, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., Sept. 15, 1914, the daughter of Melkon and Osgey (Zoolalian) Avedisian.

Mrs. Bateman was a graduate of Newburyport, Mass. High School. She was a member of the National Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

She attended the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth. Mrs. Bateman was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, George Roy Bateman, of Portsmouth, and David Bruce Bateman, of Hudson; two grandchildren, Michael Jon Bateman, of Frasier, Colo., and James Roy Bateman, of Winter Park, Colo.; one sister, Marion Sarkissian, of Seabrook; and several nieces and nephews.

BATEMAN - Mrs. Sarah (Avedisian) Bateman, 86, of 37 Baycliff Road, Portsmouth, died June 11, 2001. Private funeral services at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Barbara A. Signorelli

ROCHESTER - Barbara A. Signorelli, 62, of 4 Stacy Drive, Rochester, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Monday evening, June 11, 2001, at Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass.

Ms Signorelli was born on Nov. 13, 1938, in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of Arthur J. and Eva A. (Jurgel) Signorelli of Plaistow, N.H. She was educated at the Holy Rosary Parochial School, Lawrence, and was a graduate of Lawrence High School.

She had been a resident of Rochester for the past 36 years and previously resided in Haverhill, Mass.

She had been employed for 25 years with the General Electric Co., Somersworth until her retirement in 1993. She then had been employed on the staff of the Strafford County Homemakers.

Her surviving family members are her parents, Arthur J. and Eva A. (Jurgel) Signorelli, Plaistow; her three sisters, Mary S. Jones, Cedar Hill, Tex., Joanne S. McKenna, Bradford, Mass., and Linda S. Lennon, Atkinson, N.H.; her brother, Arthur A. Signorelli, Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

SIGNORELLI - Barbara A. Signorelli, 62, of Rochester, died June 11, 2001. Visiting hours will held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the C. Frank Linnehan and Son Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, Mass., where a funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, followed by a funeral mass at 9 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Atkinson Depot Rd., Plaistow, N.H. Burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery, Plaistow. Contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to the Residents' Activity Fund of the Assisted Living Center, 19 Beach Road, Salisbury, MA 01952.

Lucien O. Geoffrion

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Lucien O. "Jeff" Geoffrion, 92, of 1460 Palmetto St., died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at home.

He was born in Manchester, N.H., and moved to Florida in 1970 from Portsmouth, N.H.

He was a retired architect and city official. He attended the University of New Hampshire, the Atelier the Beaux Arts in Boston, and studied in Paris, France.

For 20 years he was assessor for the city of Portsmouth. He also served two terms on the City Council of Portsmouth. He was a former member of the American Institute of Architects, past state chairman of the National Association of Assessing Officials, and past president New England Chapter of Professional Appraisers.

Survivors include a son, John, a grandson, John Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Martha Taylor, all of Kittery, Maine.

Arrangements under the direction of the National Cremation Society.

Bette J. Thibeault

GREENLAND - Bette J. (Taylor) Thibeault, 61, of 3 Sanderson Ave., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at her home.

Born in Quincy, Mass., on May 29, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Albert L. and Ruth (Jordan) Taylor. She was a graduate of Braintree High School, Class of 1958, and was a member of the St. Thomas More Color Guard-Braintree Drum and Bugle Corp. She married in November 1958 and moved to Portsmouth in 1962.

She was proprietor of the former Grove Grocery on Sagamore Avenue in Portsmouth for many years. She was formerly employed at Pic 'n Pay in Portsmouth; Portsmouth High School Special Education Department; and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a plastic fabricator.

For the last five years, she was employed as a custodian at Portsmouth High School, where she was loved by all who knew her. On June 12, she was awarded the Peace Award at Portsmouth High School. Sandy White led Bette's grandchildren and great-granddaughter onto the stage to receive the award for their grandmother.

Survivors include one son, David W. Thibeault Jr. and his wife, Robin, of Portsmouth; three daughters, Jeannette Leon of Somersworth, Gail Thibeault of Greenland, and Kim Thibeault of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Patrick, Amy, Joshua, Jillian, Jamie, Kyle, Megan, Zackary and Samantha; one great-granddaughter, Kyana; a sister, Barbara J. Kelly of Quincy, Mass.; a daughter-in-law, Lisa; several nieces and nephews; and her longtime friends, Sandy White, Kay Abbott, and Wimpy and Alice Wentworth.

She was predeceased by her son, Glenn A. Thibeault, on Sept. 24, 1993.

THIBEAULT - Bette J. (Taylor) Thibeault, 61, of 3 Sanderson Ave., Greenland, died June 12, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, Monday at 10:30 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the Bette J. Thibeault Scholarship Fund, c/o Portsmouth High School, 50 Alumni Drive, Portsmouth, NH 03801-5474. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

William D. Will Jr.

CONCORD - William D. Will Jr., 33, of 15 Pitman St., died June 6, 2001, at his home after a sudden illness.

Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of William D. and Loretta A. (Gay) Will Sr., and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, where he had created the artwork for the 1986 yearbook.

He had directed the creation of the mosaic in the lobby of the New Hampshire State Hospital.

In addition to his parents of Lewiston, Maine, survivors include his maternal grandmother, Marion Tibbetts of Dowling Park, Fla.; two brothers, Raymond and his wife Jennifer (Murphy) Will of Portsmouth, and Christopher Will of Portsmouth; and one niece.

WILL - William D. Will Jr., 33, of 15 Pitman St., Concord, died June 6, 2001. A visiting hour will be held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army, 58 Clinton St., Concord. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army with Capt. Scott Flanders officiating. Arrangements under the direction of the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St., Concord, NH 03301.

SIGNORELLI - Barbara A. Signorelli, 62, of Rochester, died June 11, 2001. Visiting hours will held from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at the C. Frank Linnehan and Son Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, Mass., where a funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, followed by a funeral mass at 9 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Atkinson Depot Rd., Plaistow, N.H. Joseph S. Sobel

SEABROOK - Joseph S. Sobel, 60, of Seabrook and Deland, Fla., formerly of North Andover, Mass., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 in Deland.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., Jan. 18, 1941, the son of Stella (Stefanowich) Sobel of Deland and the late Joseph E. Sobel.

Mr. Sobel was raised in Methuen, Mass., and was a graduate of the former Tenney High School in 1959. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He worked as a self-employed wholesale florist in Methuen, Mass., for many years. He had resided in North Andover, Mass. from 1965-1990, before moving to Seabrook and Deland.

He is survived by his former wife, Jennifer "Janie" Sobel of Seabrook; one son, Master Sgt. John Sobel, USAF Okinawa, Japan; five daughters, Jane McGrady of Falmouth, Maine, Jennifer Eacho of Kingston, Kristina Sobel of Maynard, Mass., Valerie Smith of Columbia, S.C., Jeanette Sobel of Seabrook; one brother, Edward Sobel of Grand Junction, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.

SOBEL - Joseph S. Sobel, 60, of Seabrook and Deland, Fla., died June 12, 2001. The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday June 19 at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Elizabeth Lois Roy

NEWINGTON - Elizabeth Lois Roy, 67, of 57 Fabyan Point, passed away Tuesday evening, June 12, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a long illness.

Born in Lynn, Mass., Oct. 2, 1933, she was the daughter of William and Josephine (Brennan) Mahoney. She was a graduate of St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School, Class of 1951. After graduating, she was employed by the principal of Portsmouth High School as a secretary, a position she also held in Dalton, Mass., where she lived for several years.

She moved back to the Seacoast in the late 1950s to Newington, where she raised her family. She was a former member of the Planning Board in Newington.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Roy of Strafford; two daughters, Susan Roy of Newington, and Erin Roy of Dover; five grandchildren; her former husband, Roland Thomas Roy; four sisters, Patricia Hanson and Carol Keefe of Portsmouth; Eileen Rock of Exeter, and Sheila Brigham of Eliot, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

ROY - Elizabeth Lois Roy, 67, of 57 Fabyan Point, Newington, died June 12, 2001. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Newington Cemetery. No visiting hours. Memorials may be made to the Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital for the Lung and Heart Center, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Nathan S. Cobb

PORTSMOUTH - Nathan S. Cobb, 83, formerly of Islington St., died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth.

He was born in Dorchester, Mass., July 31, 1917 and had been a resident of Portsmouth for many years.

He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, having worked in the Supply Department.

He was predeceased by his wife, Katy, who died in 1999 and a son, Nathan, who died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, Gordon of Portsmouth and Chester of New Mexico.

COBB - Nathan S. Cobb, 83, formerly of Islington Street, Portsmouth, died June 14, 2001. Services will be private. Arrangements under the direction of the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Helen M. Henley

ROCHESTER - Helen M. Henley, 86, formerly of 15 West Lane, Chestnut Hill Mobile Home Park, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at the Sunbridge Health Care and Rehabilitation in Portsmouth.

Born March 30, 1915, in Rochester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Loomis) Stackpole.

Mrs. Henley has lived in the New England area all her life. She was a graduate of Rochester High School, Shaws Business College and Providence Bible College. She worked a clerk and typist for 23 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She was the first clerk and founder of the Fairhaven Camps in Brooks, Maine. She was a former minister's wife in her younger years; a member of the Church of God where she played piano for 15 years and taught Sunday school; she was a member of the gardening club, and the Women's Club.

Members of her family include her daughter, Martha Rothwell of York, Maine; a son, Richard Henley of Eliot, Maine; her grandchildren; Stephen Rothwell of Buxton, Maine, Matthew Rothwell of Eglin AFB, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., David Rothwell of Houghton College, N.Y., Brittany and Tyler Henley of Eliot Maine; a great-grandchild, Samuel Rothwell, of Buxton, Maine.

HENLEY - Helen M. Henley, 86, formerly of 15 West Lane, Chestnut Hill Mobile Home Park, Rochester, died Thursday June 14, 2001. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Church of God, Rte. 108, Rochester, N.H., with Reverend Wayne Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery, Franklin Street following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, NH 03867.

SEAGREN - Nancy J. Seagren, of 19 Walbach St., New Castle, died May 25, 2001. A memorial service (celebration of life) will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, in the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland. It is her wish that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Nancy J. Seagren Fund to benefit her charitable interests in the Seacoast, including services for children and animals. Such donations should be directed to the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801. Assisting with the arrangements was the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
