Robert J. O'Connell Sr.

SEABROOK - Robert J. O'Connell Sr., 79 of 61 Carolan Ave., formerly of Beverly, Mass., died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at his home.

Born in Beverly on March 16, 1922, he was the son of the late Charles and Laura (Allain) O'Connell.

Raised in Beverly and Somerville, Mass., he served in the U.S. Army with the amphibious forces during World War II.

He worked as a self-employed painter and carpenter before working for the city of Beverly as a foreman in the maintenance department. He retired in 1986 with 17 years of service.

He resided here since 1987, coming from Beverly. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, a member of the VFW, DAV and the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and was also a member of the B.P.O.E. No. 909 of Newburyport, Mass.

He was the husband of Lorraine E. (Kelly) O'Connell for 55 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Robert J. O'Connell Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Seabrook; one daughter, Judy Wolkonocki of Seabrook; one sister, Patricia Gagnon of Security, Colo.; two granddaughters, Kristan Prieto of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Lynn Forsberg of Sunrise, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Megan Prieto; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, Charles O'Connell and John O'Connell, predeceased him.

O'CONNELL - Robert J. O'Connell Sr., 79, of 61 Carolan Ave., Seabrook, N.H., died June 21, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, Monday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. After cremation, private interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newburyport, Mass.

Alfred A. Lyczak

RYE BEACH - Funeral services for Alfred A. Lyczak, of 370 Wallis Road, Rye, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Wednesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach. Rev. Joseph O'Connor was Celebrant. Words of remembrance were given by grandson, Nathan Lyczak. Prayer was given by Rev. Nancy Wood Lyczak. Presentation of gifts was given by Amanda and Carolos Coimbra. Soloist was Mary Lou Arcidi and organist was Judy Kish.

In attendance were members of St. Theresa Church.

Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by Rev. Joseph O'Connor and Rev. Nancy Wood Lyczak, Pastor of the United Church of Christ in Claremont. Grandsons Nathan and Andrew Lyczak played "Amazing Grace" on the accordion.

Bearers were Nathan Lyczak, Andrew Lyczak, Michael Lyczak, Joshua Curran, Matthew Curran and Joe Vozella.

James L. McGraw

EXETER - James L. McGraw, 86, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Langdon Place in Exeter.

He was born and raised in Albany, N.Y., graduating from Albany High School in 1933. He resided in Delmar, N.Y., for over 30 years and moved to Jupiter, Fla., in 1981. He was married to the late Ruth Bedell McGraw for 51 years.

He was employed by the Albany post office for 38 years and retired in 1973 as assistant postmaster.

A five-year veteran of World War II, he attained the rank of captain. He served in the Solomon Islands, Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious achievement.

Jim was a member of the Onesquethau Masonic Lodge 1096 of Delmar, N.Y.; Jupiter Elks Lodge 2469 of Jupiter, Fla.; and the United Methodist Church of Jupiter.

He is survived by a son, James A., of Madison, Conn.; daughter, Sara Hadley of Stratham; five grandchildren, James W. and Elizabeth P. McGraw, and Richard M., James E., and Brian C. Hadley; nephew, John T. McGraw of Troy, N.Y.; and niece, Gail Hummel of Orinda, Calif.

MCGRAW - James L. McGraw, 86, died June 21, 2001. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Masonic Brotherhood Fund for the Masonic Home of Utica, N.Y., 71 West 23rd St., 18th Floor, New York, NY 10010-4149; or the Alzheimer's Association, New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar, N.Y., next to his beloved wife. The services will be private. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home of Exeter.

Frederick Baumgarten

BRADENTON, Fla. - Frederick Baumgarten, 96, of Bradenton, died June 9, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 8, 1905, in East Dedham, Mass. He was the son of the late Lother and Tsenelda Baumgarten.

He was a graduate of Northeastern University of Massachusetts. He and his family previously lived in Portsmouth and Greenland, N.H. From 1936 to 1942, he owned and operated an Amoco gas station at the corner of Maplewood Avenue and Dennett Street in Portsmouth, known as Fred's Service Station.

In 1942, he became employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was a design engineer upon his retirement. He was a 60-year member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth. He enjoyed playing golf with some of his retired friends in Florida and hunting and fishing in New Hampshire.

He is survived by one daughter, Janet Collins, 1054 Mast Road, Alfred, Maine; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife Charlotte at their Florida residence in 1987; and a daughter, Joan Melton of California who died April 8, 2001.

There will be private services held for Fred at a later date in Florida.

Mary Kuncik Sokol

SHELTON, Conn. - Mary Kuncik Sokol, 88, of 123 Long Hill Ave., Shelton, devoted wife of 54 years of the late John Sokol, died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Dover, N.H. Born in Shelton, Conn. Aug. 26, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Milka Yurchak Kuncik and was a lifelong resident. She was a parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ansonia, a member of the Shelton Senior Citizens Center and American Russian Club of Shelton.

She is the beloved mother of Audrey Sokol of Shelton and Helen Cass and son-in-law Dr. Paul Cass, of Eliot, Maine; a devoted sister of Helen Kuncik, William Kuncik and Peter Kuncik, all of Shelton; two cherished grandchildren, Blake and Maura Cass of Eliot, Maine.

She was predeceased by her brother, Stephen Kuncik.

SOKOL - Mary Kuncik Sokol, 88, of 123 Long Hill Ave., Shelton, Conn., died June 18, 2001. Funeral services at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, from the James T. Toohey & Son Funeral Home, 92 Howe Ave., Shelton, at 11 a.m. in Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Burial in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Derby. Calling hours 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Panachyda services at 7:15 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter & Paul Church Fund or MSAD No. 35 for a tree to be planted at Eliot Elementary School where many joyful times were shared with grandchildren, through the funeral home.

ECKE - A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert Skidmore Ecke, M.D., of Eliot, Maine, who died on May 19, 2001, will be held at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, 155 State Road, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2001. The many friends of the late Dr. Ecke are cordially welcomed.

ALIX - Henry L. Alix, 83, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 20, 2001. Born in Keene, N.H., he resided in Greenland, N.H., before moving to Florida 1½ years ago. He retired from the shoe manufacturing industry. He was an avid golf player and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy, and son Richard, both of Green Cove Springs; daughter, Jeanne Alix of Vernon, Conn.; two brothers, Norman of Webster, Mass., and Leonard of Holyoke, Mass; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and his many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Green Cove Springs with Father Donal Sullivan officiating. Family will receive friends at the Chapel of Clay Funeral Home today (Friday), June 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date in Webster, Mass., at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Clay Funeral Home, Green Cove Springs.

Anastasia "Stasia" M. Rafferty

PORTSMOUTH - Anastasia "Stasia" M. Rafferty, 94, of Portsmouth, died at her home on Friday, June 22, 2001.

Born Jan. 12, 1907, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Margaret (McCooey) and Denis F. Rafferty and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. She was a graduate of Saint Patrick School; Portsmouth High School, Class of 1923, where she was awarded the Haven Medal for three years of Excellence in Mathematics; and Bryant and Stratton Business School.

She was employed at the National Gypsum Co. for several years and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972 where she was administrative assistant to the admiral. She was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Catherine of Siena Church.

She is survived by the children of her sister, Mary: Bernard, Peter, and Mary Loughlin and Stasia Loughlin Marple; her brother Jack: Shaun, Kevin and Brian Rafferty and Cathy Rafferty Reynolds; her brother Denis: Margaret, Denis, Mark Rafferty, Eleanor Rafferty Hogan and Sharon Rafferty Pelligrini; and her brother Terry: Rosemarie Rafferty O'Reilley; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

RAFFERTY - Anastasia "Stasia" M. Rafferty, 94, of Portsmouth, died June 22, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Monday at 10 a.m. Friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. If desired, memorials in her name may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the charity of one's choice.

Lillian Rose (Fisher) Katze

EXETER - Lillian Rose (Fisher) Katze, 90, died June 21, 2001, at SunBridge of Exeter, where she had resided since 1998.

Born Oct. 8, 1910, in East Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Samuel and Esther (Cohen) Fisher. She lived in Boston until 1952 when she moved to Portsmouth for 12 years and then resided in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta before returning to Exeter.

Lillian attended Boston University and for several years worked as a congressional clerk in the U.S. House of Representatives. Later she worked at Kings Department Store in Portsmouth and the Sun Trust Bank in Atlanta.

Her husband, Albert I. Katze, died in 1968.

Survivors include a son, Edward Katze of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Sheila Saurman of Newmarket; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jo Anderson

ROCHESTER - Jo Anderson, 82, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at St. Ann's Home in Dover with his family at his bedside, following a long struggle with prostate cancer.

Born Sept. 25, 1918, in Houghton, Mich., he was the only child of William and Hope (Brady) Anderson. He grew up in Kingston, R.I., where his father was head of electrical engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at URI in 1940. Upon his parents' deaths in 1935-6, he lived with URI Dean Royal Wale's family in Kingston.

He attended the apprentice course for electrical engineers at General Electric Co. in Lynn, Mass. in 1940, and worked for GE in Mobile, Ala. installing motors in oil tankers during World War II. Following the war he returned to Lynn, Mass. to GE's watt-hour meter engineering division. He was transferred to GE's Somersworth plant in 1954 where he worked until his retirement in 1980. In the latter part of his career, he held the position of manager of design engineering. He was a member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, chairing the "Effects of Harmonics in Meters Working Group of the Power Systems Instrumentation and Measurements Committee." He was also a member of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), serving on/chairing numerous committees over the years.

He was active in St. Mary's parish in Rochester for 46 years as CCD teacher, lector and parish council member, and helping out with penny sales, bingo and many other school and parish activities.

His hobbies as a younger man included flying (he held a pilot's license) and sailing (he crafted his own sailboat). He built a large skating rink for his children and grandchildren every winter.

He was predeceased in January by his wife of almost 58 years, Lucille (Bourque). Survivors include three sons, Jo Anderson Jr. of Chicago, William Anderson of Meredith and David Anderson of Boston; four daughters, Marcia Werner of Wayland, Mass., Mary Beth Goldblatt of Fort Montgomery, N.Y., Paula Glynn of Dover, and Karen Anderson of Boston; a brother-in-law, Arthur J. Bourque Jr. of Lynnfield, Mass. and his five children, Arthur III, Denis, Elizabeth, Anne and Barbara; children-in-law Joan Bradbury of Chicago, Claire Anderson of Meredith and Marblehead, Mass., Alan Werner of Wayland, Mass., Stan Goldblatt of Fort Montgomery, N.Y. and James Glynn of Dover; grandchildren Lorraine and Josh Anderson of Chicago, Jennifer and Brad Anderson of Meredith, Matthew and Amy Werner of Wayland, Mass., Alison Goldblatt of Fort Montgomery, N.Y., and James, Christopher, Meghan and Peter Glynn of Dover; and several great nieces and nephews.

ANDERSON - Jo Anderson, 82, died Thursday, June 21, 2001 in Dover. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, June 25 at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 26 at St. Mary's Church, Lowell Street (new location), Rochester. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Mary's Church, Lowell Street, Rochester, N.H. 03867, or St. Ann's Home, 195 Dover Point Road, Dover, N.H. 03820.

Alma E. Berger

FORT WORTH, Texas - Alma E. Berger, 93, a retired nurse, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at a local hospital.

She was born Oct. 4, 1907, in Westbrook, Maine, to Una Clark and Frank L. Farr. married to John L. Spiess in 1924 and divorced in 1930. She graduated from the Haverhill Municipal Hospital in Haverhill, Mass., in 1932. She was an active nurse from the time of graduation until 1975.

She was predeceased by her husbands Leon F. Coffin in 1972 and Harold Berger in 1989.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Harlow of Lake Worth; son, Kenneth L. Spiess of Thonotosossas, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Judith Coffin McAdams of Hillsboro, N.H., and Meredith Coffin Tilton of Portsmouth, N.H.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

KATZE - Lillian Rose (Fisher) Katze, 90, of Exeter, died June 21, 2001. Graveside services will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Central Cemetery, Rye. The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, is assisting with arrangements.

Frank J. Vieira

EXETER - Frank J. Vieira, 79, of Minuteman Lane, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at his home in Exeter, surrounded by family.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1922, in Jamestown, R.I., the son of the late Manuel and Mary Vieira.

A graduate of Newport High School in Newport, R.I., and the University of Rhode Island in 1947, he had resided most of his life in the Exeter area.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed for more than 35 years by the government as a scientist for the Soil Conservation Service and was well respected in his field.

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer, having been a member of the Exeter Country Club for more than 20 years. He enjoyed following professional sports and was a big fan of the Boston Red Sox.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Vieira, who died in 1977; and his second wife, Renda Stilson Vieira, who died in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve (Letendre) Vieira of Exeter; his son, Robert F. Vieira and his wife, Dee, of Newfields; four daughters, Rosemary Vieira of Portsmouth, Frances Williams and her husband, Don, of Deland, Fla., Nancy Griswold and her husband, John, of Middletown, Conn., and Suzanne Vieira of Egg Harbor, N.J.; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Belowski of Newmarket; two stepsons, Stephen Letendre of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Christopher Letendre of Plymouth, Mass.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

VIEIRA - Frank J. Vieira, 79, of Minuteman Lane, Exeter, died June 23, 2001. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. only on Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Michael's Church, located on the corner of Front and Lincoln streets in Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Arthur C. Labrie

HAMPTON - The funeral for Arthur C. Labrie, 75, of 1 Malek Circle, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Gerald Belanger, pastor of Our Lady of the Mountains Church, North Conway, was the celebrant. The readings and altar servers were by members of the Holy Name Society.

An honor guard was formed at the church by Holy Name Society members. Burial followed in St. Louis Cemetery, Nashua, with committal prayers by the Rev. Ronald Cote. Pallbearers were Russell Barker, Ray Robinson, Daniel Thibodeau, Marc Thibodeau, Ben Robinson and Chris Labrie.

Robert Ecke

ELIOT, Maine - A celebration of the life of Robert Ecke, who died May 19, 2001, was held on Saturday at the Eliot Congregational Church. The Rev. David Avery, pastor, conducted the services. Organist was Emily Haggerty, who also played special selections by Beethoven and Schubert on the piano. The greeter and usher was Ruth Veter. Friends and family paid tribute to Dr. Ecke by telling stories of his life and sharing fond memories. Following the service, friends and family gathered at the Days Inn in Kittery for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

A private burial will take place on Monday at Brooks Memorial Cemetery in Eliot.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Anastasia "Stasia" M. Rafferty

PORTSMOUTH - Anastasia "Stasia" M. Rafferty, 94, of Portsmouth, died at her home on Friday, June 22, 2001.
