Frances M. Medeiros

PORTSMOUTH - Frances Marilyn Medeiros, 66, of Portsmouth, died on June 24, 2001 at home.

She was born May 1, 1935 in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late James and Mabel (Bonnell) Manning.

She leaves her husband, Russell, of 46 years, who she married in April of 1955 in Salem.

She is survived by two daughters, Robin Walton of Stoneham, Mass. and (Laura) Sue Goros of Hampton. She also leaves behind her precious and cherished grandchildren, Paul Russell Whitney of New Port Richie, Fla. and Landis Leah Goros of Hampton.

She also leaves one great grandchild, Raelyn Ella Whitney of New Port Richie, Fla.

Mrs. Medeiros enjoyed crafts, ceramics, sewing, gardening and interior decorating.

According to family members, she created a charming, cozy home for herself and the ones she loved. Most of all, she gave her love and friendship to those around her.

James A. Tilley

BRENTWOOD - James Azel Tilley, 46, of North Road, died suddenly on Monday, June 25, at his home. Born on Feb. 25, 1955 in Springfield, Mass., he was the son of Charlotte (Hill) Tilley of Springfield, Mass. and the late John G. Tilley.

He had resided in Brentwood for the past 17 years. He grew up in Springfield, Mass. and graduated from the Technical High School in Springfield. He also attended the University of Massachusetts.

He served on the West Coast in the submarine service for the U.S. Navy for six years as a Machinist Mate 1st Class on the USS Drum.

He worked for the Seabrook Station Nuclear Power Plant for the past 17 years. He was most recently the senior health physics technician. He was a member of the Ski Club in Blandford, Mass. and the Results Swim and Fitness Club in Exeter. In his spare time he loved sailing, fishing, biking, hiking and animals.

He is survived by his mother, Charlotte Tilley of Springfield, Mass.; one brother, John S. Tilley of Springfield, Mass.; his companion, Susan Dargan of York, Maine; one aunt, Carolyn Hollister of Coventry, Conn.; one cousin, Charlotte Sernoffsky of Coventry, Conn.; a dog, Betty; and a cat, Tiger.

TILLEY - James Azel Tilley, 46, of North Road, Brentwood, N.H., died June 25, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27 at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will follow on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jane Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Marion C. Russell

YORK - Marion Catherine Russell, 81, formerly of Cider Hill Road, died Tuesday, June 26 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

Born Nov. 18, 1919 in Kittery, she was the daughter of Rosco and Juanita H. (Dow) Williams.

She worked as a cashier at the A&P in York for 30 years and had previously worked at the Portsmouth A&P.

She attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery.

She enjoyed drawing and painting.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph E. Russell, who died in 1984, and by a son, Jon E. Russell, who died in 1995.

Survivors include her son, Scott J. Russell of York; two brothers, Frank and Bradley Williams, both of Kittery; three sisters, Edna Welsh of Portsmouth, N.H., Ruth Williams of Kittery, and Patricia Wojer of Kittery Point; and one granddaughter, Samantha Jordyn Russell of Sanford, Maine.

RUSSELL - Marion C. Russell, 81, formerly of Cider Hill Road, York, Maine, died June 26, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York.

There are no visiting hours.

Bertha L. Rugg

PORTSMOUTH - Bertha Louise (Coleman) Rugg, 95, of 699 Middle St., passed away peacefully on June 26 at her home, six days shy of her 96th birthday.

Born in Newington, July 2, 1905, she was the daughter of Charles and Charlotte W. (Moody) Coleman.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1923, and then went on to Normal school to obtain her degree in teaching.

She had formerly taught for the Portsmouth and Bristol school systems and the Belmont and Marshfield, Mass. school systems, and prior to her retirement, worked as a substitute teacher for the Wakefield, Mass. school system.

She also served as principal during her career in education.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth and the Wakefield Unitarian Universalist Church in Wakefield, Mass.

She and her husband Phil had a fond affection for and were strong supporters of the First Congregational Society-Unitarian Church in Hampton Falls.

She and her husband over the years were very active in church activities and organizations in both Portsmouth and Wakefield, Mass.

She was also a member of the Bridget Graffort Club in Portsmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband, Philip Newton Rugg, in November 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith A. Brown of Wakefield, Mass., and Nancy Lobdell and her husband Alban of Plantation, Fla.; four grandchildren, Scott Philip Brown of Wrentham, Mass., Lee Ann Riley of Portsmouth, Kenneth A. Lobdell of Hampton, and Wendy Lobdell McManus of Dover; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces.

RUGG - Bertha Louise (Coleman) Rugg, 95, of 699 Middle St., Portsmouth, N.H., died June 26, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.

Friends invited.

Visiting hours will be held at the chapel on Friday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, N.H. 03833.

Frances Medeiros

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Frances Medeiros, who died Sunday, June 24, 2001, were held Thursday morning at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine.

Maj. Ed Forster of the Salvation Army in Quincy, Mass., conducted the services.

Special readings were recited by Barbara Forster, and Rod Manning eulogized Mrs. Medeiros.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with Maj. Forster reciting committal prayers.

Pallbearers were John Hamilton Sr., Paul Whitney, Rod Manning, Douglas Walton, James LeFleur and Rich Forster.

Family and friends gathered together following the services for a time of refreshments and reflecting on their fond memories of Mrs. Medeiros.

Evelyn Pearson

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Evelyn (Fogg) Pearson, 80, of 4 Greenway Road, Middleton, Mass., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Thursday.

The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by granddaughter Katie Law.

Emily D. Joy

PORTSMOUTH - Emily D. Joy, 86, of 188 Jones Ave., died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth, where she had been a resident for the past seven years.

Born in Portsmouth on Aug. 6, 1914, she was a daughter of Fred and Effie (Scott) Furber.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended MacIntosh College.

The widow of Roscoe Joy, who died in 1982, she is survived by a son, Arthur Joy of York, Maine; four grandchildren, Linda Kimball and Roxanne Joy, both of Sanford, Maine, Martin Joy of Portsmouth and Mark Joy of Lyman, Maine; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Blanche and Caroline.

JOY - Emily D. Joy, 86, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died June 27, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited.

There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Greenland.

Martha S. Gifford

YORK, Maine - Martha S. Gifford, 95, of Yorkshire Commons, 155 York St., died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at York Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on April 6, 1906, in York, the daughter of Rinaldo and Alice (Carleton) Blaisdell, and was a graduate of York High School.

She was a driver of a York school bus for 20 years.

She and her husband had also operated a poultry farm on Raynes Neck Road for many years.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

She was a member of the Women's League and a deaconess at the church and served as secretary and treasurer of the Missionary Club.

She was also a nurse's aide at York Hospital and was a member of the Red Cross Motor Corps and the Old York Historical Society.

She was predeceased by her husband, William R. Gifford Jr., who died in 1980, and by a daughter, Shirley Parenteau, who died in 1974.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Gittins and Virginia Beane, both of York; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

GIFFORD - Martha S. Gifford, 95, of 155 York St., York, Maine, widow of William R. Gifford Jr., died June 28, 2001, in York.

Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. on Monday in the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Parish Church Memorial Committee, 178 York St., York, ME, or the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Mary A. Higgins

HAMPTON - The funeral for Mary A. Higgins, 87, of Hampton, who died June 25, 2001, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor of the Greenland Community Church, officiated.

Jean Goss was organist.

Burial followed in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Carter.

Pallbearers were Glen Dion, Gary Dion, Mitchell Durning, Jessy Higgins, Dean Martin and Timothy Martin.

Dwight Hammond Jr.

DOVER —Winston Dwight Hammond Jr., 75, of 1 Redden St., died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born July 7, 1925 in Claremont, he was the son of the late Winston D. and Margarite (Duncan) Hammond Sr.

He was a graduate of Windsor High School, Windsor, Vt., Class of 1943.

During World War II he served in the United States Navy, after which he earned his bachelor of science degree from Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. in 1951.

A resident of Dover for the past 40 years, he was a nuclear inspector at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in 1990.

He was an avid golfer who frequently played at Sunnydale Country Club. He also enjoyed cards and Dover High School athletics.

Family members include his wife, Dorothy E. (Pomeroy) Hammond of Dover, whom he married July 2, 1955; one son and his wife, David and Natalia Hammond, of Dover; two daughters, Diane Hammond and her partner, Cathy Maloney, of Northwood; and Deidre and her husband, Luis Araujo of Quincy, Mass.; five grandsons, Ian S. Hammond, Samuel J. Hammond, and Nathan D. Hammond, all of Dover, Hunter J. Araujo and Jeffrey Dagraca of Quincy, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Davis Hammond and two sisters, Phyllis Kavenagh and Barbara Sheehan.

HAMMOND - Winston Dwight Hammond Jr., 75, of 1 Redden St., Dover, died Thursday, June 28, 2001.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday at Pine Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Lamson, retired minister of Middle Street Baptist Church of Portsmouth, officiating.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Homemakers of Strafford County Day Out Program, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, N.H. 03867 or to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Hampshire, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, N.H. 03301.

Lawrence F. Kelley

SOMERSWORTH - Lawrence F. Kelley, 91, formerly of Topsham, Maine, Clearwater, Fla., and Somersworth, died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at the Falmouth by the Sea Nursing Center in Falmouth, Maine, after a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1909 in Portsmouth, and was the son of Lawrence Joseph and Elizabeth Hilda (McNally) Kelley.

He was raised in Portsmouth where he attended St. Patrick School.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, class of 1928, where he played basketball and baseball.

He became an apprentice shipfitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1928, retiring from there after 40 years of civil service as a naval architectural technician in 1969.

During his career at the yard he served as president of The American Federation of Technical Engineers for several years.

He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Florida and Maine.

He married Lillian T. Shaw in Somersworth in 1933.

She died in 1989. He and his wife wintered in Clearwater, Fla. for many years.

He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where he served as president of the Holy Name Society and was active in church affairs.

He was also a former communicant of Light of Christ Church in Clearwater and Saint Charles Borremeo Church in Brunswick, Maine.

In 1990 he married Cecile M. Jantey in Florida and became a year-round resident there.

After her death in 1996, he moved to The Highlands in Topsham, Maine, in 1997 to be closer to his family.

While living at The Highlands, he was an avid pool player and loved playing the piano, as he had all his life.

He is survived by four daughters, Mary T. Fulton of Maple Hill, Kan., Elizabeth R. Plante and her husband, Raymond, of W. Lebanon, N.H., Patricia A. Flanagan and her husband, Richard, of Somersworth, and Frances L. Weatherbie and her husband, William, of Brunswick, Maine; a son, Lawrence R. Kelley and his wife, Patricia, of Delmar, N.Y.; four stepchildren, Myra Hickman of Florida, Karen Sexton of California, Donald Hickman and Fred Hickman, both of Indiana; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

KELLEY - Lawrence F. Kelley, 91, formerly of Topsham, Maine, Clearwater, Fla., and Somersworth, N.H., died Thursday June 28, 2001.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, High Street, Somersworth, with the Rev. Steven Kucharski, Pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery at Somersworth.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions in his name to either the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, N.H., 03110-5032 or to High Hopes Society, 416 K Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, N.H., 03054.
