William F. James

PORTSMOUTH - William F. James, 64, of Portsmouth, longtime resident of Greenland, died on Friday, July 13, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1936, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of William F. James Sr. and Marjorie (Kendall) James.

He attended and graduated from Thompson Academy in Quincy, Mass. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, from which he received honorable discharge. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 25 years and was a member of the Yankee Clippers Barber Shop Quartet.

Survivors include a sister, Juanita Saunders and her husband, George, of Greenland; an aunt, Barbara Pearson of Arizona; a nephew, F. William Saunders and his fiancee, Darlene Padziora of Dover; a niece, Deborah Wright of Keene; a great-niece, Beth Padziora of Rochester; two great-nephews, Jesse Padziora and Zachary Mocciola, both of Dover; a great-great-nephews, Austin Lavoie of Dover; and two great-great-nieces, Sarah and Amber Edgerly of Rochester.

JAMES - William F. James, 64, of Portsmouth and a longtime resident of Greenland, died July 13, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

HAYWARD - William Clark Hayward, died Nov. 16, 2000. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, July 21, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, Chapel Street, Portsmouth. All friends and family welcome.

Agnes V. Crowley

PORTSMOUTH - Agnes V. Crowley, 92, of 409 Richards Ave., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born in Portsmouth on July 25, 1908, she was a daughter of Cornelius and Ellen (Cronin) Crowley. She was a graduate of St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School, with the Class of 1926.

She was an employee of New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. and retired as a line assigner in the Portsmouth plant department.

She was a lifelong communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Golden Age Club.

Survivors are her sister Martha Billings of Portsmouth; three nieces, Sharon Bryan of Melbourne, Fla., Sally Conlon of Pinehurst, N.C., and Martha Morse of North Canton, Conn.; and four nephews, Stephen C. Crowley of Scottsdale, Ariz., J. Frank Crowley of Bedford, John F. Malsbenden of Colchester, Conn., and Paul V. Malsbenden of Bow.

CROWLEY - Agnes V. Crowley, 92, of 409 Richards Ave., Portsmouth, died July 15, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer Street, Portsmouth. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Truman D. Moy

YORK, Maine - Truman D. Moy, 82, of Cape Neddick Road, died July 12, 2001, at York Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on April 21, 1919, in Mondovi, Wisc., a son of John B. and Mildred (Harvey) Moy.

His family moved to New York State when he was a child. He spent most of his childhood in and around Galway, N.Y., working on farms. He joined the Navy during World War II and became a chief petty officer. He served in Bermuda during the war as an aviation metalsmith, where he was assigned to repair seaplanes that were on submarine patrol. He was also stationed in the Pacific. While in the Navy he lived in Florida, Texas, California and Washington State as well as serving a tour of duty in Japan. He retired from the Navy in 1961 after serving 20 years, then moved with his wife and three daughters to York Beach. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring there after 21 years.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the York Beach Volunteer Firemen, St. Aspinquid Lodge 198, A.F.&A.M., the Boardman-Ellis VFW Post 6977, the Fleet Reserve, the Maine Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Maine Old Cemetery Association. With his wife, Ulvilda, they located, mapped and recorded the majority of the old private cemeteries in the town of York. Their work was then published by The York Historical Resources Task Force as a map, titled "Family Burial Plots in York, Maine." It was also included in the book "Vital Records of York, Maine" by John Frost. He served on the Board of Appeals for York. He enjoyed baseball, reading, history, science, politics, playing cards and his family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ulvilda (Kurtz) Moy, who died in 1997; a son, Roger J., an infant, who died in 1951; as well as two brothers, Cecil H. Moy, who died in 1981, and Reid J. Moy, who died in 1985.

Survivors include his daughters, Agnes U. Moy and Lona G. Davis, both of York Beach, and Rebecca L. Moy and son-in-law Larry Bailey of York Harbor; two grandsons, Chad E. Davis of York Beach and Dakota D. Irvin of York Harbor; two brothers, Frank E. Moy and his wife, Ann, of Schagicoke, N.Y., and Newell D. Moy and his wife, Lillian, of Salt Lake City; and 17 nieces and nephews.

MOY - Truman D. Moy of 167 Cape Neddick Road, York Beach, Maine, died July 12, 2001, in York. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the York Beach Fire Department, P.O. Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910.

George B. Jabre Sr.

NEWMARKET - George B. Jabre Sr., 73, of North Main Street died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born April 6, 1928, in Dover, he was the son of Shakrallah S. and Rose (Grenier) Jabre. He was raised in Durham and lived in Newmarket for many years.

A 1948 graduate of Dover High School, he received a degree in business management in 1957 from McIntosh College.

He owned and operated Friendship Lanes in Newmarket from 1962 until 1985. He was also a former member of the Newington Fire Department and former police chief in Madbury.

He was a member of the Polish Club and Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 F.O.E., both in Newmarket.

Survivors include six children, Chick Jabre and his wife, Patricia, of Portsmouth, George B. Jabre Jr. of Ohio, Sue Welch of Farmington, David Jabre and his wife, Marie, of Manchester, Travis Jabre and Tristain Jabre, both of Newmarket; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Madeline Lockhardt of Durham; a sister-in-law, Polly Jabre of Newmarket; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert J. Jabre.

JABRE - George B. Jabre Sr. of North Main Street, Newmarket, died July 14, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday from St. Mary's Church, Newmarket. Graveside services will follow in St. Mary's New Cemetery, Dover.

Richard J. Flanagan

DOVER - Richard J. Flanagan, 44, of 71 Grove St. died on Saturday, July 14, 2001, surrounded by his family at Brigham & Women's Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 17, 1957, in Rochester, he was the son of Dennis and Jeanette (Marcoux) Flanagan. He was educated in Somersworth, graduating from Somersworth High School, Class of 1976.

For the past 25 years he had worked at Tri-City Dodge. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed restoring vintage automobiles.

He was the husband of Barbara Ann (Burns) of Dover.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his son, Sean William Flanagan of Dover; three brothers, Dennis Flanagan Jr. and David Flanagan, both of Somersworth, and Michael Flanagan of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Denise Gagne and Darlene Flanagan, both of Somersworth; his mother- and father-in-law, Brian and Patricia (McArdle) Shaw; three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, William Burns of Merrimack, and David Shaw, Kevin and Stephanie Moore, all of Sarasota, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

FLANAGAN - Richard J. Flanagan of Grove Street, Dover, died July 14, 2001. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Roberge Funeral Home, 298 High St., Somersworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Trinity Church. Burial to follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the Jimmy Fund, 375 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02315.

Dominick J. Peluso

PORTSMOUTH - Dominick J. Peluso, 74, of 377 Leslie Drive, died at his home on Saturday, July 14, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth on March 23, 1927, he was a son of Nickola and Rosa (San Arcangelo) Peluso and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

While in high school he started selling vegetables from a wheelbarrow. In 1957 he founded a one-room vegetable stand on State Road in Kittery, Maine, and named it the Golden Harvest. He had great success in this business and retired in 1998 after 41 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances (Falls) Peluso; one daughter, Pamela Pike of Concord; two stepdaughters, Candace Buell of Somersworth and Valerie Bacon of Portsmouth; a stepson, Russell Anderson of Wakefield; three grandsons, David, Nicholas and Jacob Leiper; stepgrandchildren Tammy Jones, Tiffany LaFrenier, Darren Bacon, Colin Bacon, Miranda Bacon, Michael Anderson and Mandy Madingly; a stepgreat-grandson, Kale Jones; one brother, Vincent Peluso of Salem, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Bertha Peluso, in 1997.

PELUSO - Dominick J. Peluso, 74, of 377 Leslie Drive, Portsmouth, died on July 14, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Operation Blessing, 600A Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Marion Knight

HAMPTON - Marion E. Knight, 89, of 58 Moulton Road, died Thursday, July 12 at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Noyan, Quebec, Canada on Feb. 24, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Herman L. and Martha L. (Tipping) Johnson.

She was employed at the old Portsmouth Hospital as a clerical worker, retiring in 1972.

She resided in Hampton since 1951, coming from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Women's Guild of the Church, and was a former member of the Hampton Garden Club.

She was the wife of the late Allen L. Knight, who died in 1991.

Family members include nieces and nephews.

KNIGHT - Marion E. Knight, 89, of 58 Moulton Road, Hampton, died July 12, 2001. Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to either the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842, or to the Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862.

David Desmond

YORK HARBOR, Maine - David FitzGerald Desmond, Lt. Col. U.S. Army (retired), 83, of 14 Cameo Court, Sentry Hill Retirement Community, York Harbor, died on Sunday, July 15 at York Hospital after a valiant fight against prostate cancer.

Born in Portland on Feb. 15, 1918, the son of John and Helen (Dougherty) Desmond, he was a graduate of Chevrus High School and Portland Jr. College.

He had been a resident of York since 1946 and was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Design Division for many years. Throughout the 1960s, he was president of the Old York Improvement Society and the York Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife operated Desmond Cottages on Long Sands Road from 1951 until 1980. Mr. Desmond was also the owner of The Desmond Real Estate Agency and at the time of his retirement from real estate, it was the oldest original owner-operated agency in York.

Mr. Desmond was a former member of the York Golf and Tennis Club and was an avid tennis player until the age of 81. He eagerly tried to inspire this love to his grandchildren and their young neighbors.

He was keenly interested in early Irish Desmond heritage and conducted presentations and fund-raisers to restore The Great Hall at Desmond Castle in Askeaton, Ireland. He and his wife enjoyed many years of foreign travel and happy vacations at their cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee and winters of tennis activity with dear friends at Marco Island, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Constance (Hirst) Desmond of York Harbor; son Russell J. Desmond and his wife, Bobbie; two grandchildren, Jacqueline and Brandon of York; a brother, Thomas J. Desmond of Chatham, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hirst Black; two nieces; and two nephews.

DESMOND - David F. Desmond, 83, of 14 Cameo Court, York Harbor, Maine, died on Sunday, July 15, 2001. Friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Grande Living Room at the Inn at Sentry Hill. Donations in his memory may be made to the Autism Society of America Foundation, 7910 Woodmount Ave., Suite 300, Bethesda, MD 20814-3067.

Robert Caldwell

KITTERY, Maine - Robert H. Caldwell, 75, of 12 Sunset Drive, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at York Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 5, 1926 in Biddeford, Maine, he was the only child of Hugh S. and Bertha (Lord) Caldwell and was a 1944 graduate of Biddeford High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for two years during World War II. At the end of the war, he left the service and attended the University of Maine at Orono and was a 1950 graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He began working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1950, retiring in 1981. He held several positions in the engineering department, spending most of his time as the head of the Marine Mechanical Branch of the Planning Yard Division.

He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Kittery. He enjoyed outdoor activities including skiing, canoeing and water-skiing. He loved spending time with his family at their camp on Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to Arizona in their travel trailer.

He was active in scouting in the 1960s and had served as a scoutmaster. He was also an amateur photographer, taking countless pictures at Traip Academy sporting events. He was a member of the Dunlap Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M., No. 47 of Biddeford and was a member of the National Association of Naval Technical Supervisors.

Survivors include his wife, whom he married in 1948, Esther (Silcox) Caldwell of Kittery; one son, Russell Caldwell of Kittery; two daughters, Rebecca Caldwell of Kittery and Roxanne Williams of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Alyssa M., Adam H. and Ashley Caldwell and Thomas and John Williams.

CALDWELL - Robert H. Caldwell, 75, of 12 Sunset Drive, Kittery, Maine, died July 15, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, in St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 60 Government St., Kittery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be given to the University of Maine Foundation, c/o Robert Caldwell Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2220, Bangor, Maine 04402. A reception will follow the service at the Caldwell residence at 12 Sunset Drive. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.
