Anna Brooks Connors

NORTH HAMPTON - Anna Brooks Connors, 63, of 27 Granite Post Green, died on Friday, July 20, 2001, at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer. It was her 44th wedding anniversary, and she was surrounded by family and friends.

Born Aug. 15, 1937, she was the daughter of Robert and Marjorie (Brooks) Payn of North Hampton.

Primarily a mother and grandmother, she was employed for 10 years at Liberty Mutual.

She was the wife of Thomas P. Connors Jr.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include two sons, Michael Connors of North Hampton and Marc Connors and his wife, Gina, of Rye; four grandchildren, Riley Connors, Olivia Connors, Anabella Connors and Sylvia Bridgeo.

CONNORS - Anna Brooks Connors, 63, of North Hampton, died on July 20, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial in Newington Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833-4806.

Douglas P. Brown

BROWN - Douglas P. Brown, 45, of Portsmouth, died July 19, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Central Cemetery in Rye. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to his favorite charity, A Safe Place, P.O. Box 674, Portsmouth, NH 03802-0674. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

James A. Dunton

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for James A. Dunton were held July 11, 2001, from the Middle Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Vivan Martindale officiating. In attendance were residents of the Edgewood Centre and friends. Portsmouth Lodge of Elks #97 conducted services on Tuesday evening, July 10. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Martindale conducted committal services. Bearers were Thomas Coakley, Neil Coakley, Jack Sullivan, John Sullivan, Larry Kinch and Sandy Trefethen.

Mae L. Holzworth

RYE - The funeral for Mae L. Holzworth, 76, wife of Robert G. Holzworth, of 391 Central Road, was held Monday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. The Rev. Douglas F. Carter, pastor from Greenland Community Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Mr. Carter.

Barbara R. Crossley

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Barbara R. (Hanson) Crossley, 55, of 21 Triton Drive, Rye, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Monday. Rev. Dr. David Kerr officiated. A poem was read by Barbara's daughter Johanna Montgomery.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Dr. Kerr.

Bearers were John G. Crossley Jr., Patrick E. Ricker, Michael Montgomery, Mike Workman, Tony Callham, and Gene Callham.

Carrie A. Odiorne

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Carrie A. Odiorne, 97, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Monday, July 23, 2001. Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Staley, pastor of the New Castle Congregational Church, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by family and friends.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Rev. Staley.

Bearers were Andrew White, Theodore Bartlett, Richard Bartlett, Stephen White, Karl Durand, and Matthew White.

Frederick E. Everett

ROCHESTER - Frederick E. Everett, 71, husband of Marjorie (Squires) Everett, of 18 Morgan Road, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Bound Brook, N.J., on Dec. 19, 1929, the son of the late Edgar and Evelyn (MacKenzie) Everett. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1947.

Mr. Everett served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, retiring after 20 years of service in 1968.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for nine years and was a self-employed painting contractor for over twelve years.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth and St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth.

Besides his wife of fifty-two years, survivors include six children, Judith Drummond of Conover, N.C., Gloria Adams of Conover, N.C., Dianne Moreira of Swansboro, N.C., Evelyn Vitagliano of Eliot, Maine, Frederick E. Everett Jr., of Portsmouth, and Mark D. Everett of New Durham; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Messiere of Columbus, Ohio, Marilyn Tapscotts of Somersworth, and Judy Gregory of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

EVERETT - Frederick E. Everett, 71, of 18 Morgan Road, Rochester, died July 23, 2001. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Chapel with Masonic services by St. Andrews Lodge No. 56 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Cancer Center at Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Mildred S. Rogers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Mildred S. Rogers, 82, of 5606 Foxcross Court, died Monday morning, July 23, 2001, at Arbors of Fort Wayne Health Care Center, where she had been a patient for the past two months.

Born April 9, 1919, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Frank T. and Margaret (Cassiday) Skofield.

She was married on May 22, 1946, to Ray M. Rogers.

A former Sunday school teacher and a former president of the U.M.W., she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur, Ind. She was also a former member of the Psi Iota Xi sorority.

She was a homemaker and a former employee of New Hampshire National Bank in Portsmouth, N.H., as well as a former employee of the Ships Service Department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

In addition to her husband, a former superintendent of North Adams Community Schools in Indiana, she is survived by her son, Douglas R. Rogers, of Akron, Ohio; her brother, Herman Skofield, of Walpole, N.H.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Helen and Frances Skofield.

ROGERS - Mildred S. Rogers, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Monday, July 23, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the DeBaun Funeral Home in Terre Haute, Ind. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. on Friday until the time of the service. Memorials may be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, Ind.

Robert E. Russ

DOVER - Robert E. Russ, 81, formerly of 3 Hawthorne St., died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at St. Ann Home, after a period of failing health.

Born Jan. 6, 1920 in Rollinsford, he was the son of Alfred and Marion (Johnson) Russ.

A veteran, he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the First Marine Division under Col. Edson, known as Edson's Raiders.

He was employed as an installation foreman with New England Telephone & Telegraph, retiring after 38 years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Winnipesaukee Lodge F&AM of Alton and a member of the Alpha Chapter Order of Eastern Star of Alton.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth (Brown) Russ; a daughter, Judith Hampe of Hopkinton; a sister, Elizabeth (Russ) Masek of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

RUSS - Robert E Russ, 81, formerly of 3 Hawthorne St., Dover, died July 22, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery in Kingston with the Rev. Abby Lynn Campbell, officiating. Those who desire may make donations in his name to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820; or to St. Ann Home Activities Fund, 195 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820. Arrangements under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.

Jason L. Jenness

VESTAL, N.Y. - Jason Leo Jenness, 31, of Hillside Drive, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston, Mass., surrounded by family and friends, after a valiant fight with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

He was born April 6, 1970 in St. Albans, Vt., and grew up in Littleton. He graduated from Littleton High School in 1988 where he excelled in sports and was a true class leader. He graduated from Daniel Webster College in Nashua in 1992 with a bachelor of science degree in aviation management. He served five years in the U.S. Air Force where he was a captain and senior missile launch officer. He had a master's degree in aviation science from Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

At the time of his diagnosis, he was completing his final course for a second master's degree in leadership from Augsbury College in Minneapolis, Minn.

Following his military service, he worked for US West in Minneapolis and most recently was employed by Sanmina (formerly Hadco) Corp. in Owego, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Doreen (West) Jenness of Vestal, N.Y.; his mother, Rhonda Jenness of Littleton, N.H.; his sister, Jade Monahan and her fiancé EJ Chea of Portsmouth; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tim and Sherry West of Hamilton, Mont.; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Laura West of Bozeman, Mont.; his niece, Taylor West of Bozeman, Mont.; his beloved yellow labs Sierra and Savanna; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

JENNESS - Jason Leo Jenness, 31, of Hillside Drive, Vestal, N.Y., died July 22, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, at the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Joseph Klatka as celebrant. Committal rites will follow at the Saint Rose Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Jason Leo Jenness Memorial Fund, c/o Binghamton Savings Bank, 540 Hooper Road, Endwell, NY 13760; (607) 779-2345. Contributions will be made to "The Family Inn," a home-away-from-home for transplant patients and their families. Arrangements under the direction of the Pillsbury Funeral Homes.

Robert V. Parnham

OCALA, Fla. - Robert V. Parnham, 55, of Ocala, died Monday, July 23, 2001.

A native of Portsmouth, he was the son of Robert C. and Edna Parnham and came to Ocala seven years ago from El Paso, Texas.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated with high honors from the Naval School of Music and played the trumpet and flugle horn.

He retired after 25 years of service with Clarostat Manufacturing in Dover, as an electrical manufacturing engineer, and then retired with a company in El Paso, Texas.

He was a member of the Church of the Incarnation in Ocala. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 8083 in Belleview, Fla.; a member of the Village Concert Band of Lady Lake, Fla.; a member of the Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band of Ocala; a member of the Ravens, a three-piece band of Ocala; and a former member of the Masonic Harmony Lodge in Gorham, Maine. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Florence "Fluff" Parnham, of Ocala; his father, Robert C. Parnham of Portsmouth and his wife, Bette; a sister, Althea Moquin and her husband, Raymond, of Newmarket; and several nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his mother, Edna, in 1974.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Portsmouth.

Lucy B. Smart

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Lucy B. (Oulton) Smart, 87, the wife of Philip Smart, of 133 Lincoln Ave., died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Edgewood Centre.

Born in Portland, Maine, July 20, 1914, she was the daughter of Thomas and Edith Oulton. She was a graduate of Portland High School and Gorham Normal School.

She was formerly employed as a clerk typist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Besides her husband, survivors include two sons, Thomas P. Smart of West Hartford, Conn.; and Maj. Peter H. Smart, U.S. Army, of Ansbach, Germany; a grandson, Nicholas Smart, and granddaughter, Phoebe Smart, both of Ansbach, Germany; two nieces, Dorothy Sawyer of Springvale, Maine and Edith Stanek of Euclid, Ohio.

SMART - Mrs. Lucy B. (Oulton) Smart, 87, of 133 Lincoln Ave., Portsmouth, died July 21, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the chapel.

Iva S. Dunbar

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Iva S. Laing Tennett Dunbar, 83, of Ormond Beach, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, Fla.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass. and lived in Reading and Andover, Mass. before moving to Ormond Beach in 1958, via Jacksonville. She was a resident of Rye from 1971 to 1978.

A homemaker, she was an elegant and gentle lady, and enjoyed travel, gardening, playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, and the company of family and friends of all ages.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin; two sons, Jay Laing of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and Steven Laing of Rye; and fondly remembered nieces, nephews and cousins in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.

DUNBAR - Iva S. Laing Tennett Dunbar, 83, died July 20, 2001. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday at Rye Central Cemetery, Central Road, Rye. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to PEO Chapter C-J, c/o Mrs. Robert Roberts, 4 Via Verona, Palm Coast, FL 32137-2210.

William J. Wood

PORTSMOUTH - William J. Wood, 86, of 59 Sweatt Avenue, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Nov. 10, 1914, he was the son of James O. and Rena E. (Skedgell) Wood and attended Portsmouth schools.

He served in the United States Army during World War II with the HQ & HQ Battery 821st Anti-aircraft (AW) Battalion.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a master electrician for Davidson Rubber Co., retiring in 1976.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth for more than 50 years and a member of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion of Portsmouth.

Survivors include his brother, James F. Wood of Elyria, Ohio, and his twin brother, Harry E. Wood of Eliot, Maine; a sister, Susan Garland of Forest City, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

WOOD - William J. Wood, 86, of 59 Sweatt Ave., Portsmouth, died July 25, 2001. Masonic services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday by St. Andrew's Lodge No 56 F&AM at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. There will be a private burial at the convenience of the family. If desired, donations may be made to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, N.H. 03885-0196.
