Merilyn L. MacAllister

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Merilyn L. MacAllister, 77, a resident of 58 Merrimac St., died Friday morning, July 27, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare in Amesbury, Mass.

She was the wife of Dr. John D. MacAllister.

Born in Amesbury on Aug. 10, 1923, daughter of the late Percy and Pearl (Littlefield) Perkins, she had been a permanent resident of Newburyport for the past eight years, previously having spent winters in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.

A graduate of Amesbury High School in the Class of 1941, she began her employment working in the office at Towle Silversmiths in Newburyport. She spent many years as a homemaker and took great pride in her home.

In her later years, she began carving shore birds, as did her father, a recognized woodcarver, and did folk art and decorative painting. She was known for her custom decorative lamp shades and enjoyed working with her daughter and granddaughter at Flukes & Finds and Friends of Newburyport.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two children, Carla L. Moore and her husband, Robert, of Salisbury, Mass., and William L. Papoulias and his wife, Bonnie, of Newbury, Mass.; four stepchildren, Robert MacAllister and his wife, Liz, of Shrewsbury, Mass., James MacAllister and his wife, Eunice, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., David MacAllister of Nelson, N.H., and John MacAllister and his wife, Joan, of Munsonville, N.H.; a brother, Paul Perkins of Weare, N.H.; four grandchildren, Kelly Fredette of Newburyport, Jason Moore of Newburyport, Travis Papoulis of Newbury, and Amy Papoulias of Quincy, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Bradley Moore of Newburyport.

MacALLISTER - Merilyn L. MacAllister, 77, of Newburyport, Mass., died Friday, July 27, 2001. A service of sharing, reflection and celebration of her life will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport. One hour of visitation, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, will precede the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.

Eleanor G. Jackson

KITTERY, Maine - Eleanor G. Jackson, 86, of Kittery, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at her home.

She was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Kittery, daughter of the late Walter S. and Maude (Hearne) Jackson. She was a graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery.

She lived most of her life in Kittery, working and managing the Jackson Hardware store for many years until her retirement in 1983.

She spent her leisure time enjoying playing cards, especially whist and solitaire. She was a life member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Kittery Grange. She was also very active with her church, belonging to the Altrua Club of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery.

She is survived by her loving family, Walter Jackson of Kittery, Chester A. Jackson of Ft. Walton, Fla., and Betty Roberdeaux of Ft. Myers, Fla.; her beloved grandnieces and nephews; and her cherished great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Chester Jackson, who died in 1971.

JACKSON - Eleanor G. Jackson, 86, of Kittery, Maine, died July 25, 2001, at home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Anne Robertson, pastor of St. John's United Methodist Church in Dover, will conduct services. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. At the family's request, only family flowers will be received. Donations in her memory may be made to a church of one's choice. The Sara Orne Jewett Chapter 176 of the Eastern Star, South Berwick, Maine, will conduct services at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Ella M. Bell

KITTERY, Maine - Ella Maude (McClain) Bell, 76, of Kittery, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at her home. Born Sept. 29, 1924 in Exeter, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Agnes (Lang) McClain. She attended local schools in New Hampshire.

She married her longtime sweetheart Robert Bell on March 13, 1942, in Revere, Mass. For some time they lived in Portsmouth, N.H., and in 1952 they moved and settled in Kittery.

She worked for 13 years as a central supply technician at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, and later stayed home to concentrate on raising her children and being a loving and devoted housewife, homemaker, and mother.

In her leisure time she enjoyed baking pies, cakes, and other goodies, especially for church functions. She was an accomplished piano player who loved all kinds of music, especially Irish music. According to family members, she loved to go to the ocean and walk on the various ocean beaches in the area.

Besides her husband, Robert Bell, she is survived by her six daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Oxford of Laguna of Niguel, Calif., Mrs. Sandra Daskowski of Eliot, Mrs. Linda Jellison and Mrs. Nancy Richard, both of York, Mrs. Roberta Thomas of Newington, N.H., and Mrs. Kimberly Brown of Providence, R.I.; a son, Robert Bell Jr. of Eltoro, Calif.; her beloved 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.; and two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Hill of Florida and Mrs. Kathryn Ouimet of Portsmouth. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan L. Bell.

Her bright smile and good nature, with a loving heart, will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

BELL - Ella Maude (McClain) Bell, 76, of Kittery, Maine, died July 29, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Raphaels Catholic Church in Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor, will celebrate the Mass of Christian burial. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Marian Hall

RYE - Marian Hall, 85, a resident of Webster at Rye since 1998, died Friday, July 27, 2001 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Boston on March 11, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Stephen Gardner and Jessie (Campbell) Sleeper.

Mrs. Hall was a longtime resident of Eastchester, N.Y. She was the wife of the late Robert F. Hall and was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy H. Sheehan.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan H. Lund of Rye; a brother, Gordon Sleeper of Muncie, Ind., a sister, Priscilla Sterling of New London; four grandchildren, Sandra H. Lund, Robert F. Lund, Kelly McGee, and Michael John Sheehan.

HALL - Marian Hall, 85, of Rye, died July 27, 2001. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

George M. Robinson

RYE - George Maurice Robinson, 48, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at his home in Rye, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 7, 1952, he was the son of Richard Robinson and Gloria Robinson Costello. He graduated from St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School.

He had a 25-year career working for the telephone company. He began as an installation repair, cable splicer. For the last 12 years, he was a special service technician.

He was an avid car enthusiast and a superior jack of all trades. He skied extensively throughout the United States. But by far, his biggest joy of all was the love of his boys.

He is survived by his wife, Janet (Cosman) Robinson; three sons, Jackson Robinson, 6, Dylan Robinson, 10, and Kevin Cantin, 14, of Quebec, Canada; his mother, Gloria Costello, of Rye; his sister, Joanne Robinson and her husband, Tony Fournier, also of Rye; his stepsister, Judy Green and her husband, Charles, and their son, David, of Oquawka, Ill.; and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his father, Richard C. Robinson.

ROBINSON - George Maurice Robinson, of Rye, died July 29, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Church on Breakfast Hill Road in Greenland. If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. The Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph G. Swift

PORTSMOUTH - Ralph G. Swift, 93, widower of Eleanor B. (Garland) Swift, of 238 Willard Ave., died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Lakeport on April 29, 1908, he was the son of Clyde H. and Bernice A. (Buskey) Swift.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 29 years, retiring in 1970. After his retirement, he operated a small appliance repair business.

Survivors include two daughters, Lorraine Palmer and her husband, Wayne, of Kittery, Maine, and Beverly A. Stewart and her husband, Edmund, of Exeter; a son, Robert C. Goodsell and his wife, Nancy, of Sanbornville; and his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

SWIFT - Ralph G. Swift, 93, of 238 Willard Ave., Portsmouth, died July 29, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Family flowers only. If desired, donations in his memory may be made to Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

William J. Wood

PORTSMOUTH - Masonic services for William J. Wood, 86, of 59 Sweatt Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Monday by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM. Services were conducted by Wor. Master Phillip Fraser and including Chaplain Nelson D. Hersey, PM; Senior Warden, Edward J. Conway, PM; Secretary, Donald H. Ladd, PM; Knute H. Lundgren, PM; Robert M. Argel, PM; and Robert L. Sutherland Sr., PM.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Greenland.

The American flag was presented by nephew Richard B. Wood to William's brother, Harry E. Wood.

John J. Wholey

PORTSMOUTH - John J. Wholey, 78, died on Saturday, July 28, 2001, at his home in Portsmouth, surrounded by his family.

Born in Portsmouth on Nov. 6, 1922, he was the son of Catherine and Daniel Wholey. A graduate of St. Patrick School, Portsmouth High School, Boston College, and Boston College Law School, he was also a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He served as city solicitor in 1958, on the Board of Education in 1956-57, the City Council in 1952-55 and 1976-77, and as the assistant mayor in 1960-61, 1972-73 and 1974-75.

He served as mayor of the city from 1962 to 1963, and from 1978 to 1981.

He was a member of the Joint Building Committee for Portsmouth High School and its two additions, the addition to Portsmouth Junior High, and the rebuilding of Dondero School.

He worked to institute the Portsmouth Economic Commission, the Portsmouth Housing Authority, and was honored by the NAACP as man of the year.

He was recently honored by the New Hampshire Bar Association as a 50-year member, and retired this June from Wholey and Pelech Law Office in Portsmouth. He was a member of many local organizations, including the Creek A.C., and took great pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty; daughters Gail and Shawn Pelech of Portsmouth; grandchildren Cate and John Pelech; a sister, Terri Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, James; and sisters Mary Labranche, Kay Thomits, Honora Goulding, and Patricia Harris.

Robert W. Mullins

ELIOT, Maine - Dr. Robert Wilson Mullins, 87, a longtime resident of Eliot, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Sykesville, Md.

He was born in Astoria, Ore. on May 20, 1914. He attended the University of Idaho, and was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1940. A career officer, his tours of duty included the Aleutians, Saipan and Spain. After more than 20 years of service, he retired with a rank of commander in June 1962 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He received both a master's and a doctorate of business administration from Harvard University.

He was noted for his enthusiastic teaching style, and traveled worldwide to teach young graduate students principles of business administration. When the academic years were not in session, he lived in his home on the banks of the Piscataqua River. After teaching at Northeastern University in Boston, he and his wife, Eleanor, moved to Managua, Nicaragua, where he was one of the founding professors of INCAE, a graduate school of business for the six Central American countries. Known lovingly to all at INCAE as "El Professor," he instituted a number of innovations, including the use of the Harvard Case Study method of teaching. Each year he proudly led the graduation procession in full academic regalia. In 1974 he was a visiting professor of business at the graduate school in Tehran, Iran. Later, with the relocation of INCAE to Costa Rica, he and his wife moved to Alajuela, Costa Rica, where he continued to teach for many years with great gusto until his retirement to Maine.

He was predeceased by his son, Dr. Nicholas Creed Mullins, and Eleanor Callahan Mullins, his wife of 59 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Lynn Shematek; five grandchildren, Nicholas Mullins, Robert Mullins, Nancy Mullins, Anne Shematek Smith and Christopher Shematek; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Mullins, Creed Mullins, Emma Smith and Hunter Mullins.; and his sister, Mildred Dodson of Paradise, Calif.

MULLINS - Dr. Robert Wilson Mullins, 87, of Eliot, Maine, died July 15, 2001. A memorial service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, with a reception to follow. In lieu of memorial gifts or flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Eleanor Jackson

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Eleanor Jackson, who died July 25, 2001, were held Tuesday, July 31, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Anne Robertson, pastor of St Johns Methodist Church in Dover, N.H., conducted the services. The Sara Orne Jewett Chapter 176 of the Eastern Star of South Berwick held a service prior to the funeral. Those taking part in the Eastern Star service were Worthy Patron Lyle Littlefield, Worthy Matron Sharon Nye, Ruth, Berla Grant, Martha, Bea Rowland, Electa, Margaret Morse, Esther, Robyn Faulkner and Chaplain, Barbara Fernald. A delegation from the Eliot Grange, the Eastern Star and Phillip Gerry, were honorary bearers. Active bearers were Matt Dumont, Sean Jackson, Michel Dumont, Scott Jackson, Chester A. Jackson and Walter Jackson. A graveside committal service and burial followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. The Rev. Robertson recited committal prayers.

Barbara P. Bemis

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Barbara Patterson (Blackington) Bemis, 81, of 156 Parsons Road, Rye, were held Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Her son, Preston Bemis, gave words of reflection. Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Gum.

Robert E. McCluskey

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Robert E. McCluskey were held Saturday, July 28, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Burns at St. Catherine of Siena Church. The gifts were presented by his brother, Lawrence McCluskey, and his sister, Mary Hranybzka. Pallbearers were Michael Sullivan, James Hathaway, Steven Bartlett, Mark Willer, Joshua Johnson, and Gregory Jassmond. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Msgr. Burns conducting the committal.

Priscilla A. Delisle

STRATHAM - Priscilla A. Delisle, 64, of 76 Portsmouth Ave., formerly of Peverly Hill Road in Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born March 7, 1937 in Berlin, N.H., she was the daughter of Majorique and Marie (Tremblay) Doyon.

She lived in Portsmouth for 40 years and was a communicant of St. James Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts, knitting, sewing, and cooking.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Paul A. Delisle; six sons, David A. Delisle, Donald P. Delisle of Portsmouth, Daniel M. Delisle of Illinois, Douglas R. Delisle of Rochester, Dennis H. Delisle of Florida, and Dale A. Delisle of Portsmouth; one daughter, Dorothy Chapman of Portsmouth; two brothers, Maurice Baker of Winstead, Conn., and Norman Baker of Delia, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son, Dana C. Delisle in 1995.

DELISLE - Priscilla A. Delisle, 64, of 76 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, died Aug. 1, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Darrell K. Perry

INDIANAPOLIS - Darrell K. Perry, 41, of Indianapolis, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, in Indianapolis.

Born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England on Dec. 13, 1959, he was the third son of the late Edward R. Perry Sr. and Renee C. Goins.

He lived in Portsmouth, N.H., and graduated from Portsmouth High School, class of 1977. He also earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College, class of 1981.

Upon graduating from college, he worked for Kraft Foods, Inc. in Boston for many years in the marketing department. Upon returning to Portsmouth, he worked for Measured Process, Inc. in Dover, N.H., and the New Hampshire Sweepstake Commission until he moved to Indianapolis to be with his brother, Edward.

Survivors include his mother, Renee C. Goins, and stepfather, James B. Goins, of Portsmouth; two brothers, David H. Perry and wife, Ellen, of Norfolk, Mass., and Edward R. Perry Jr. and fiancée, Gretchen Stuart, of Indianapolis; his beloved aunt, Sara King; uncles, Nick and Abe; cousins, Doreen Nichols-Holstein, Gus and Teddy Nichols; many other relatives in Virginia; and a multitude of friends in the surrounding area and across the U.S.A. His sunny smile, dimples, good nature, plus a loving heart will be missed by all who knew him.

PERRY - Darrell K. Perry, of Indianapolis, died July 25, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the New Hope Baptist Church, 263 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Office of Communications, Building 31, Room 7A50-MSC2520, Bethesda, MD 20891-2520. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.
