Marie S. Gaskill

YORK, Maine - Marie S. Gaskill, 73, formerly of East Boston, Mass., died Monday, Aug. 1, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1927 in Boston, she was the daughter of Joseph and Marie T. (DiFranza) Malgioglio.

She worked as a nurse's aid at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for more than 15 years. She lived most of her life in East Boston before moving to York to be closer to family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis S. Gaskill, who died in 1997, and by her father, who died in 1958.

Survivors include her mother, Marie T. Malgioglio of York; a son, Charles Gaskill of Revere, Mass.; a daughter, Lois Webber of Bellingham, Mass.; a brother, Joseph Malgiolio of Ridgewood, N.J.; a sister, Elaine Jackson of York; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

GASKILL - Marie S. Gaskill, 73, of York, Maine, died Aug. 1, 2001. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home in York.

Christina D. Kooyoomjian

NORTH HAMPTON - Christina D. Kooyoomjian, 19, of 302 Atlantic Ave., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Boston Medical Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Hampton.

Born May 20, 1982, in Salem, Mass., she was the daughter of John A. and Linda A. (Morrissey) Kooyoomjian of Hampton.

She was a graduate of Winnicunnet High School, class of 2001. She had previously lived in Salem, moving to Hampton when she was in the sixth grade.

She loved to help children and was always happy.

In addition to her parents, family members include two sisters, Danielle A. and Carol A. Kooyoomjian, both of North Hampton; her maternal grandmother, Arlene T. Morrissey of Danvers, Mass.; her maternal grandfather, Robert W. Morrissey of Salem; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

KOOYOOMJIAN - Christina D. Kooyoomjian, 19, of 302 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died July 31, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery in Hampton.

LEE - Suzana Latkins Lee of 136 Chandler St., Boston, Mass., died July 30, 2001. A service of sharing reflection and celebration of her life will be conducted from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday by Pastor Samuel Hogan of The Good Shepard Church of God and Christ, West Roxbury, Mass. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday. Arrangements under the direction of the Shields Funeral Home.

Ray J. Hastings

HAMPTON - Ray J. Hastings, 79, of 2 Seavey St., died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at his home after a period of failing health.

Born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sept. 30, 1921, he was the son of the late Ray J. and Frances (Leinenwever) Hastings. He had resided in Hampton since 1960 and had lived in Exeter, and in New York and New Jersey.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He signed on with the ARCO Marine division of the Atlantic Richfield Co. as an able-bodied seaman, and retired in 1984 as chief engineer.

In 1981 he served as a visiting professor of engineering at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. He also worked during the late 1940s at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

During World War II, he survived enemy attack when his ship was torpedoed and sunk. In 1993, he received recognition by Russian President Boris Yeltsin on behalf of the Russian people for his war service.

Mr. Hastings was a 1941 graduate of Lane Technical High School in Chicago, was a member of the Portsmouth Propeller Club, and was a frequent attendee of the monthly Massachusetts Maritime Alumni luncheons where he could reminisce with his fellow mariners. He was a past president of the former Hampton Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Miriam F. "Middy" (Stevens) Hastings of Hampton; a son, Gary S. Hastings of Telluride, Colo.; a daughter, Sandra H. Becker of Telluride; two brothers, John M. Hastings of Spring Hill, Fla., and Joseph P. Hastings of Cherry Hill, N.J.; two nieces; and four nephews.

HASTINGS - Ray J. Hastings, 79, of 2 Seavey St., Hampton, died Aug. 2, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Marie S. Gaskill

YORK, Maine - Marie S. Gaskill, 73, formerly of East Boston, Mass., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at York Hospital.

Robert F. Keohane

HAMPTON - The funeral for Robert F. Keohane, 71, of 39 Moulton Road, who died July 26, 2001, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

A cross representing a Christian symbol was placed on the casket by Robert W. Keohane. Anthony Perry and Brian Perry offered the readings. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Words of remembrance were offered by longtime friend H. Alfred Casassa.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Griffin. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Keohane's son, Robert.

Pallbearers were Philip Weydener, Anthony Perry, George Murphy, Eric Vavra, Mark Keohane and Edward Keohane. American Legion services were conducted at the funeral home Monday evening by Hampton's American Legion Post No. 35.

Irving W. Tourtellot

ADVANCE, N.C. - Irving Williams Tourtellot, 87, of Bermuda Village, formerly of Greenville, S.C., and Charlotte, died July 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Hospital in Winston-Salem after a brief illness.

Born April 25, 1914, in Hope Mills, he was the son of the late Carl Thurston and Irene Laraway Tourtellot. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Tourtellot Currier.

He spoke many times of his pride in the members of his ancestral, immediate and extended family. Survivors include his beloved wife of almost 69 years, Louise Bentz Tourtellot; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Chester and Janet Graven Tourtellot, William Lawrence and Sandra Queen Tourtellot, all of Charlotte; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl Thurston Tourtellot Jr., of Greenville, S.C., Richard Chester Tourtellot of Hampton, N.H., and Raymond Bernon Tourtellot of Burlington, Mass.; as well as 13 nieces and nephews; 22 grandnieces and nephews; and four great-grandnieces.

He attended The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., graduating with a BS degree in civil engineering. He was a registered engineer in seven states and was active as an officer in the local, state and national levels of the American Society of Civil Engineers and also in the Consulting Engineers Council.

He retired in 1974 as a vice president, Southern Division, of Charles T. Main, after a long civil engineering career that took him all over the world to 42 countries on four continents. This included working with Crandall Dry Dock Engineers in Cambridge, Mass., and in Canada for many years, designing and managing construction in shipyards around the world.

TOURTELLOT - Irving Williams Tourtellot, 87, of Bermuda Village, Advance, N.C., died July 27, 2001. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, in the Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Ave., Charlotte, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Huguenot Society of South Carolina, 138 Logan St., Charleston, SC 29401. Arrangements under the direction of Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, 120 South Main St., Winston-Salem, N.C.

Ralph G. Swift

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Ralph G. Swift, 93, of 238 Willard Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Thursday. The Rev. Patricia L. Bristow-Carrico, pastor of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, Maine, officiated.

Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Bristow-Carrico. Bearers were Tom Palmer, Rick Koch, Mike George, Chris Koch, Aaron George and John Perham.

Jack Sharkey Jr.

RYE - Jack Sharkey Jr., 84, of 65 Washington Road, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

Born on May 5, 1917, in New York City, he was the son of the late Jack and Maria (Cerini) Sharkey.

Mr. Sharkey was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. Before World War II, he was a welterweight contender, boxing in Madison Square Garden in New York.

He was a gas pipeline engineer for Local No. 274 of Ridgefield, N.J.

He had lived in Rye since 1982, coming from Secaucus, N.J., and was a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

He was the husband of Margaret (Barclay) Sharkey for 39 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack Sharkey III of Warren, Maine; two stepsons, Barclay Close of Hays, Kan., and David Close of Farmington, Maine; one stepdaughter, Laurie B. Remick of Eliot, Maine; one sister, Marion Termeg of Bricktown, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three nieces.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton.

Ella M. Bell

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Ella M. Bell, who died July 29, 2001, at her home in Kittery, were held Thursday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau celebrated the Mass of Christian burial. Organist was Alfred "Butch" LaPointe and altar attendant was Ronald LaMontagne. The church choir provided musical selections.

Family members eulogized Mrs. Bell at the service. A graveside committal service followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. The Rev. Nadeau recited committal prayers.

Bearers were Jeffery Jellison, Paul Daskoski, Eric Hannaford, Scott Daskoski, Bryan Hannaford and Shawn Oxford.

A reception followed the funeral services at St. Raphael's Parish Hall. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.

Mark C. Cantlin

GREENLAND - Mark C. Cantlin, the widower of Agnes Joanna White Cantlin, died on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at the home of his daughter, Margaret Karnacewicz, following a brief illness.

Born May 19, 1901 in Bristol, Conn., he was the son of Thomas and Emma (Little) Cantlin. His family moved to New Hampshire in his early years and they lived in West Swanzey, Wesport, Winchester and Keene, where he attended local schools.

He began work for the Faulkner Colony Woolen Mills in 1916. He continued his employment there until the closing of the mill in 1954. At the time of the mill closure, he was the superintendent of the office overseeing daily operations of the mill. He was then employed at International Narrow Fabric in Keene until the factory closed in 1974.

He had a great many interests that kept him active his whole life. Gardening, canning, rug-hooking, cribbage, and a passion for motorcycles were just a few. As a devout Catholic, his faith was a priority. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his daughter, Margaret Karnacewicz of Greenland; his sister, Mary Boufford of Keene; his daughter's children, Mark and his wife, Kathlene, Micheleen, Michael, and Marty and his wife, Jenny. He was predeceased by his mother and father; his wife of 63 years, Agnes; his five brothers, Archie, Paul, Leo, John and Clayton; and his son-in-law Michael Karnacewicz.

CANTLIN - Mark C. Cantlin, 100, died Aug. 3, 2001. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home. There will be visiting hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Foley Funeral Home in Keene. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard's Church in Keene. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Keene. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Keene Area Home Health and Hospice, 69-L Highland St., P.O. Box 564, Keene, NH 03431.

Dale R. King

SIDNEY, Maine - Dale R. King, 56, died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at his Pond Road home.

He was born in Oakland on Sept. 19, 1944, the son of William and Beverly (Forsberg) King. He attended local schools, graduating from Oakland's Williams High School in 1962.

He was a graduate of the apprentice program as a shipwright at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard where he was employed for 17 years. Since 1983, Dale was employed as a licensed real estate broker with Century 21 Surette in Waterville.

Dale was a former musician with several bands in the central Maine area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, croquet, pool, skydiving and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Sheryl MacNeil King; two sons, Christian and Cory of Sidney; two sisters, Linda King Stevens of Smithfield, and Crystal King Paulette of Sidney; a cousin, Leonel Cote of Belgrade; a nephew, Tony Paulette; three nieces, Penny Nutting, Lisa Coro, and Vicky Thompson; and several grand nieces and nephews.

KING - Dale R. King, 56, of Sydney, Maine, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. Friends are invited to visit from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, Maine. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Oakland United Baptist Church, Church Street, Oakland. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St., Atlanta, GA 30309.

Karen M. McDonough

HAMPTON - The funeral for Karen M. McDonough, 44, of 59 Hampton Meadows, was held Thursday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The pall was placed on the casket by Khris Berns and Marlene Lendrim. Words of remembrance were offered by Lynne Sylvia. The gifts were presented to the altar by Karen's sister, Kathryn A. Hayes and her family, including husband Michael and children Ellen and Steven. After cremation, interment was on Friday in the High Street Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Griffin. Pallbearers were Robert Wilson, James Kennedy, Jerry Clark, Robert Lendrim, Glen Masella and Karney Nazarian.

John A. Hayes

PORTSMOUTH - QMCM John A. Hayes, U.S. Coast Guard Ret., 62, husband of Anita M. (Wells) Hayes of 1 Freedom Circle, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at his home.

Born Oct. 10, 1938, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Lawrence H. and Cyrena M. (Ulmer) Hayes and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School class of 1956.

Hayes served for four years in the Navy and then enlisted in the Coast Guard where he served during Vietnam. He retired from the Coast Guard at the rank of master chief quarter master in 1978, with a total of more than 21 years of service.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, and a life member of Emerson Hovey Post 168, VFW in Portsmouth and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Besides his wife, Anita, survivors include two sons, Robert Hayes of Laytonville, Calif. and Glenn Hayes of Barrington; two daughters, Susan Hayes of Somersworth, and Connie Nason of Dover; six grandchildren, Daniel, Ryan, Michael, Glenn, Laura and Charles; and sister, Linda Berg, of Arkansas and brother, Richard Hayes, of Florida.

Two brothers, Philip Hayes and Peter Hayes, predeceased him.

HAYES - QMCM John A. Hayes, U.S. Coast Guard Ret., 62, of 1 Freedom Circle, Portsmouth, died Aug. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with VFW services by Emerson Hovey Post 168 at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday. Flowers will be accepted or donations in John's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Scott St. Louis. Nelson Ward was the organist and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist. Alter servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Several friends offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal prayers by Deacon St. Louis. Pallbearers were Jamie Puloso, Josh Linane, Denis Housneck, Mike Fields, Axle Cancel and Ryan Dewar.
