Avis L. Sinclair

DOVER - Avis Louise (Foss) Sinclair, 87, formerly of Exeter, died on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Dover Rehab and Living Center after a long period of failing health.

She was born on March 8, 1914, the daughter of George P. and Stella (Libby) Foss. Avis grew up in Center Strafford and graduated from Austin Cate Academy in 1932, where she played cello in the orchestra and played center for the girls' basketball team.

In 1936, Avis graduated from the Exeter Hospital Training School for Nurses and proudly wore her nurse's cap as an RN. In May 1941, she married Francis M. Sinclair and moved to Exeter, where she resided until her move to Dover Rehab in 1997 due to ill health.

She was employed at Exeter Hospital for many years and was one of the hospital's first recovery room nurses. She also worked as the bookkeeper in her husband's busy wildflower business for more than 20 years, and in Dr. Angelo Rocco's Exeter home office for several years.

Avis was a former member of St. Michael's Church in Exeter. She was also active in the Exeter Women's Club and Exeter Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Avis loved music, holidays, reading, crafts and going out to eat, but her greatest love was for her family and dear friends.

A woman who wore many "hats," Avis gave of herself selflessly: as wife, mother, sister, daughter, nana, aunt and friend. She charmed us all with her sense of humor, no-nonsense style and independent spirit, and never failed to surprise us with her many talents and ambitions.

She took piano lessons in her 60s, and at the age of 80 could be found shooting hoops in the driveway with her grandchildren. Her blueberry cobbler was always the best in town.

Avis was predeceased by her husband, Francis Matthew, in January 2000; as well as her sisters Phyllis Lynbourg, Leolla Turmelle, Dora Perkins and Marion Brown; and brother George Foss.

She is survived by her son Eric F. Sinclair, daughter-in-law Andrea Sinclair, and grandchildren Kristin and Thomas Sinclair, all of Dover; sisters Ardys Page and Irene Cafasso of Rochester, and Theresa Hodges of Strafford; brother James Foss of Center Strafford; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She will be greatly missed by all of us and, as Avis used to say, "God love you!"
