George M. Robinson

RYE - Largely attended memorial services were held for George M. Robinson, 48, of 3 Victory Lane, Rye, at Bethany Church in Greenland on Thursday, Aug. 2. Pastor Fred Cheney officiated.

Jan Stover played a piano solo. A poem was read by Jody Fougere. "On Eagles Wings" was sung by Justin Yim as requested by George's son, Dylan Robinson.

Special memories of George were shared by Shari Shambo Whitworth, Dennis L'Italian, and Chris Hoag. Also in attendance was a very large delegation of his co-workers from Verizon.

Norma H. Marlett

SOUTH CHINA, Maine - Norma Hazel Marlett, 91, passed away quietly on Aug. 7, 2001, at Lakewood Manor in Waterville.

She was born Nov. 18, 1909, in Ashton, S.D., the daughter of William H. and Minnie I. (Piercy) Francis. Norma spent her school years in Ashton, graduating from Ashton High School in 1927. She was the loving wife of Rolland Loren Marlett, whom she married on Nov. 20, 1927. Norma was the loving mother of Paul Marlett, Lois Steury, Janet Schaefer and Gregory Marlett. She and Rolland lived in Aberdeen, S.D., Washington, D.C., Madison, Wis., and Beloit, Wis. Norma lived in Madison and Monona, Wis., before moving to South China in 1987.

Norma was predeceased by her husband in 1955, and her son Paul in 1972. She is survived by her children, Lois, Janet and Gregory; her grandchildren, Craig Steury, Tom Steury, Susan Dukart, Julie Reynolds, Ken Steury, Kathy Morteza, Debbie Marlett, Bill Marlett, Kelly Marlett, Diane Schaefer-Shuldman of Portsmouth, Nancy van Elteran, John B. Schaefer, David J. Schaefer, Mark Marlett of Portsmouth, Caroline Marlett, David A. Marlett; and many great-grandchildren.

Norma was an avid reader and enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren very much. She had a kind heart and loved animals.

MARLETT - Norma Hazel Marlett, 91, of South China, Maine, died Aug. 7. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Madison, Wis. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Gifts of remembrance can be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Gray and Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor.

Mathew R. Zona

RYE - The funeral for Mathew R. "Bob" Zona, 93, of 12 Huntervale Ave., was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Joseph X. O'Connor, OSA, was the celebrant. Marjorie Scully was organist/pianist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. The pall was placed over the casket by Donald Bell, Peggy Kerr and Kristi Rada. Salvatore DiVincenzo was altar server. The gifts were presented to the altar by Nina Clapp and Horace Zona Jr. Words of remembrance were offered by Elaine Webb and Robert Vincent, who was spokesman for the Rye Lions Club. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father O'Connor. Pallbearers were Roger Philbrick, Dave Kornechuk, John Zona, Frank Ryan, Kenneth Moynahan and Randall Tompkins. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Zona's widow Anna M. (Galbraith) Zona.

Frank P. Willette

HAMPTON - Frank Paul Willette, 79, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

Mr. Willette was born in Nashua on April 4, 1922, the son of the late Paul and Felicia (Kozlowski) Willette, and had been a resident here for many years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy aboard the USS Montpelier in the Pacific. After the war, Mr. Willette attended Syracuse University, where he played football and graduated with the class of 1947.

He was a former FBI agent and investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor. While serving in both the New York and Boston offices of the FBI, Mr. Willette was integral in two of the bureau's high profile cases, the arrests of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and the Boston Brinks robbery. He later served as the regional director in the Philadelphia office of the Department of Labor.

After many years of service, he returned to Hampton to play music and work on his golf game. He was a member of the Abenaqui Country Club of Rye.

He was the husband of the late Margaret "Bib" Foley, who died in 1978. He is survived by his children, Michael, Carolyn, and David; daughters-in-law, Jacki and Margo; and grandson, Nick. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Willette, in 1977.

WILLETTE - Frank P. Willette, 79, of Hampton, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Wadleigh W. Woods

PORTSMOUTH - Wadleigh W. Woods, 96, widower of Nadine E. (Tarbell) Woods, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at his home.

Wadleigh was born in Portsmouth on Sep. 30, 1904, the son of Walter and Mary Woods. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, class of 1922, Dartmouth College, class of 1926, and held a master's degree from the University of New Hampshire.

He was married for 67 years to Nadine (Tarbell) Woods of North Bangor, N.Y., who died in 1998.

Mr. Woods spent 45 years as a teacher-coach in independent schools in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

During World War II, he served three years in the Military Welfare Service of the American Red Cross.

He was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth since 1927, Portsmouth Rotary Club since 1977, where he received the honor of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, and served on the board of directors of the Chase Home for Children from 1985 to 1995.

For 34 summers, Wadleigh was the tennis instructor at the Wentworth-by-the-Sea in New Castle. From 1975 to 1995, he played in many senior tennis tournaments throughout the Eastern United States. He was several times ranked No. 1 in his age bracket in both singles and doubles in New England.

From 1977 to 1994, he was involved in volunteer work under the aegis of R.S.V.P. In 1985, he received a commendation award for volunteerism in the state of New Hampshire. This award was presented by President Ronald Reagan in the Rose Garden at the White House.

He leaves his daughter, Diane Woods, of Durham; foster granddaughter, Cindy L. Smith, also of Durham; and many students, athletes and others he has mentored through the years.

WOODS - Wadleigh W. Woods, 96, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001. Friends may be received from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the family home at 198 Thaxter Road, Portsmouth, which will include a shared musical celebration. Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Newington Cemetery, Newington, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Middle Street Baptist Church, Court Street, Portsmouth. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Wadleigh may be made to the Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, and/or the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196. Arrangements are by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Laura L. Davis

KITTERY, Maine - A largely attended funeral for Laura Lee (Dumas-Durant) Davis, 56, of Kittery, who died Aug. 6, 2001, at her home, was held Thursday morning at the Eliot Congregational Church. Pastor Gail Kindberg conducted services. Friends of Mrs. Davis eulogized her, and talked of fond memories. The organist was Susan Utoh and the greeter was Ruth Vetter. A graveside committal service followed in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Kindberg reading committal prayers. Pallbearers were Rick Davis, Rob Pierce, Allen Pierce, Jim Collins, Ryan Lynch and Dave Eddie. A time of fellowship, sharing memories, and refreshments followed the services at the Davis home in Kittery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper funeral home of Kittery.

Michael D. Langley

BERLIN - Michael D. Langley, 42, of 41 Twelfth St., died Aug. 3, 2001, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

Born April 15, 1959, in Berlin, he was the son of Warren J. and Sophia (Sazonick) Langley.

A 1977 graduate of Berlin High School, he later attended New Hampshire Technical College in Berlin.

He lived and worked in the Portsmouth area for several years and had most recently lived in Myrtle Beach, S.C., before returning to Berlin.

Family members include his daughter, JoHannah Langley of Portsmouth; his mother, Sophia Langley of Berlin; a brother, Peter Langley of Manchester; two sisters, Christina Levasseur and Jill Langley, both of Berlin; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Warren J. Langley, in 1978.

LANGLEY - Michael D. Langley, 42, of Berlin, N.H., died Aug. 3, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the Russian City Cemetery in Berlin. The Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Anna B. Connors

PORTSMOUTH - A largely attended funeral service was held for Anna Brooks Connors on July 25, 2001 at the Farrell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Graham Alvord officiating. Words of remembrance were given by her son, Marc Connors. Burial was in the Newington Cemetery with the Rev. Alvord saying the committal prayers. Pallbearers were Vincent Frank, Cosmas Iocovozzi, James McKenzie, Stanley Heap, Brad Connor, and Richard Pinney.

Laura L. Davis

KITTERY, Maine - Laura Lee (Dumas-Durant) Davis, 56, of Kittery, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at her home. Born Dec. 1, 1944 in Kittery, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Laura (Bouchard) Dumas.

She grew up in Eliot where she attended local schools. She has been married for 36 years to Richard Davis. Both she and her husband raised their family and worked in the Kittery area. She worked at the Kittery Trading Post as a senior cashier. She also worked previously at Casco Bank and at Data General in Portsmouth.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and crafts. According to family members, she was an excellent cook. She loved to swim, both in her pool and in the ocean, but her favorite thing to do was spend time with her beloved grandchildren. Over the years she took part in a lot of sleepovers with her grandchildren.

She had a precious gift of making people feel comfortable and loved. Her generosity and good nature will be missed by many, whose life she touched. She also loved animals, especially her pet cat, and has been a crusader for the prevention of cruelty to animals, and if she could have, would have given a home to all of God's little creatures.

Besides her husband, survivors include her son, Richard Davis Jr. and his wife, Stephanie, of Dover, N.H.; a brother, Arthur Dumas of Kittery; three stepsisters, Cheryl Fujisaki of South Korea, Linda Durant of Newport Richey, Fla. and Gail Lynch of Dover; her cherished five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Scott Christopher Davis, who died in 1994 and an infant son, Keith Davis, who died shortly after birth; a brother, Charles Dumas; and a sister, Patricia Dumas.

DAVIS - Mrs. Laura Lee (Dumas-Durant) Davis, 56, of Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 6, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Eliot Congregational Church. Pastor Gail Kindberg will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot. Friends and relatives may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Wilson Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, Inc., Old Holland Road, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094-0043, or to a charity of one's choice.

Lee C. Paige

DOVER - Lee Charles Paige, 62, of Clearwater Drive, died Aug. 4, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born in Richland, La., the son of the late Hayes and Melzie (Hammond) Paige and has lived here since 1997, moving from Massachusetts.

Lee was a decorated war veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Among his medals and citations, Lee received a Purple Heart and a Silver Star (the second highest honor bestowed upon a soldier). He was the first African American to serve in the Nike Air Defense Missile Program. Very proud of his heritage, Lee was half Cherokee Indian.

A licensed social worker by profession, Lee retired from the county of Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles, he coached the Diocese of Los Angeles Basketball Team.

Lee was the husband for Carmen Buford, Ph.D. (former associate dean and instructor at University of New Hampshire); a son, Christopher Lee Paige of Burlington, Mass.; a daughter, Raquel Evelyn Theresa Paige of Burlington; a brother, Hayes Henry Paige of Alexandria, La.; stepchildren, Michael J. Towler Sr. of Los Angeles, Laurine A. Towler of New York City, Jocelyn E. Towler, Ph.D. of Lomita, Calif., Virginia L. Towler of Los Angeles, Dr. Carolyn R. Towler of Rendondo Beach, Calif., and Stephanie L. White of Los Angeles; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his stepson, Raymond F. Johnson III.

PAIGE - Lee Charles Paige, 62, of Dover, died Aug. 4, 2001. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Central Avenue, Dover. Burial will be Monday in new Morning Glory Cemetery, Ruby, La. Contributions in Lee's memory may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

ZONA - Mathew R. "Bob" Zona, 93, of Rye, died Aug. 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Saint Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Rye. Please omit flowers. If desired, donations may be made to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

Herbert F. Baxter III

SEABROOK - Herbert F. "Cubby" Baxter III, 38, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a courageous battle with CML Leukemia.

He was born in Amesbury, Mass., July 1, 1963, the son of Arlene T. (Harrington) Baxter of Sanbornville and the late Herbert F. Baxter Jr.

Cubby was raised in Newburyport, Mass. and Seabrook, and graduated from Winnacunnet High School with the class of 1982. He was employed as a chemist for Lonza Biologics Inc., a pharmaceutical company at the Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth.

He was a former Seabrook harbormaster and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was known for his love for his family.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Colleen D. (Lennon) Baxter of Seabrook; six children, Jeremy Baxter, Herbert F. Baxter IV, Dwayne Stoddard, Alannah Baxter, Adrian Baxter and Cheyenne Baxter, all of Seabrook; his maternal grandfather, James W. Harrington of Amesbury; his paternal grandmother, Florence (Dobson) Abesamra of Methuen, Mass; two brothers, Brian A. Baxter of Sanbornville and Bradley R. Baxter of Seabrook; three sisters, Tammi-Jo Baxter of Concord, Robbi-Lyn Baxter of E. Kingston, and Tara Bishop of Salisbury, Mass.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

BAXTER - Herbert F. "Cubby" Baxter III, of Seabrook, died Aug. 9, 2001. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. After cremation, private interment will be in the Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook. If desired, donations may be made in Cubby's memory to First Mass Bank, 270 Lafayette Road, Seabrook, NH 03874.

Charles R. LaRose

SUQUAMISH, Washington - Retired Police Captain Charles R. LaRose passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, from natural causes. He had resided in Washington State for the past seven years.

Born April 17, 1941 in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of Ralph and Isabelle (Zych) LaRose. He attended college at St. Anselm's in Manchester, N.H. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Shafter in Hawaii for three years, as a military policeman. Among the many military honors, he earned the expert pistol and marksman rifle and carbine commendations.

He was known to his partners, served on the Portsmouth Police force for 22 years, from patrolman to captain. He served as president of the Portsmouth Police Relief Association and president of the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. He was a member of the police Scuba Diving Team, along with Carl Seavey, his partner and best friend.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joyce (Lampert) LaRose; daughter Valerie French of Dover, N.H.; daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Frank Eldredge of Stratham, N.H.; daughter and son-in-law, Danielle and John Bradford of Washington state; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Sarah LaRose of Washington state; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Minnie LaRose of Greenland, N.H.; a sister, Janice Twombley of Somersworth, N.H.; several grandchildren; and many aunts, nieces, and nephews.

He was well-known for his humorous and giving nature and will be missed by all.

LaROSE - Retired Police Captain Charles R. LaRose passed away Aug. 7, 2001. A private memorial service for family and friends will be held on Sunday in Washington State. If desired, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Portsmouth Police Relief Association.

Christos G. Katsikas

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. - Christos G. Katsikas of Charlestown, formerly of Lowell, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at his home after a long illness with cancer. He was 58.

He was a graduate of Lowell High School, Wentworth Institute and Suffolk University. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard Reserves for six years. He was employed by Altid Enterprises of Cambridge for 37 years, serving as senior advisor in real estate planning and development.

He was a longtime member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England.

Survivors include his parents, George C. and Helen Katsikas of Hampton, N.H.; sisters Angie Genzabella of Fortunes Rocks, Maine, Irene Clarke of Sandown, N.H., Antonia Boutselis and Ann Manchini, both of North Andover, and Joan DeChane of Chelmsford; and brother Charles Katsikas of Santa Fe, N.M.

A funeral service was held on Friday, Aug. 10, at noon at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Boston. Donations in his memory may be made to either the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of N.E., 162 Goddard Ave., Brookline, MA 02445; or the Boston Center for Liver Cancer, c/o Dr. Keith Stuart, 330 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215.

Interment was at High Street Cemetery in Hampton, N.H.

Arrangements were made by Arthur C. Hasiotis Funeral Service of Boston.

Betty J. Papandrew

RYE - Funeral services for Mrs. Betty J. (Hillard) Papandrew, 77, of 10 Pollard Drive, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with memorial services at the First Congregational Society-Unitarian, Hampton Falls. The Rev. Carl Scovel, D.D., and the Rev. Henry J. Stonie, Ed.D., officiated.

Guitar preludes were given by T.J. Wheeler. Organist was Barbara Owen, and violinist was Priscilla Leavitt. Reflections were given by Steve Woodcock, Sarah Woodcock, Paul Bamford, and Zac and Jordan Papandrew.

Burial was in the Central Cemetery with committal services by the Rev. Scovel and the Rev. Stonie. Mike Mone played the bagpipes.
