Esther E. Lanzillotta

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Esther E. (Hayes) Burke Lanzillotta, formerly of Pembroke and Kingston, Mass., and Boca Raton, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at the Atrium Nursing Center in Middleboro, Mass., after a period of failing health. She was 91 years old.

She was the mother of William Burke of Portsmouth, a retired chief of the Portsmouth Police Department.

Born in Brockton, Mass., she was a daughter of the late John and Etta (Murphy) Hayes.

She was a graduate of Howard High School in West Bridgewater, Class of 1928.

She was a self-employed bookkeeper, working with her husband's company, M. Lanzillotta Co.

She enjoyed all types of dancing, playing her organ and golfing.

She had resided in Bridgewater for the last three years, having come from Pembroke and Kingston, Mass., and Boca Raton, Fla., where she had lived for 30 years.

She was the wife the late Edward F. Burke and Michael Lanzillotta and the mother of Frances Couet of Lakeville, Mass.; Barbara Hughes of Westlake Village, Calif.; Edward Burke of Auburn, Calif.; William Burke of Portsmouth, N.H.; and Patricia Hines of Brockton, Mass.

She was the stepmother of Fred Lanzillotta of Hanover, Mass., and the late Richard, James and Leo Lanzillotta.

She was the sister of Grace Lougee of Connecticut and the late Thomas, Clarence, John Hayes, Margaret Russell, Mary McNally and Rita Moran.

She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

LANZILLOTTA - Esther E. Lanzillotta, of Bridgewater, Mass., died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001. A funeral will be held at 8 a.m. on Thursday from the Prophett Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. (Rte. 18), in Bridgewater, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Rockland, Mass. Donations may be made in her memory to the Atrium Nursing Center, Resident Active Fund, 314 Marion Road, Middleboro, MA 02346.

Margaret A. Crompton

PALM COAST, Fla. - Margaret Anastasia Crompton, 96, formerly of Austin Street, Portsmouth, died at Florida Home Health Care on Friday, Aug. 10, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth on Aug. 30, 1904, she was a daughter of Frank and Ellen (Murphy) Flanagan, and was a resident here until moving to Florida in 1993.

She enjoyed her position as a saleswoman for many years in various businesses in the retail industry. She was active with the Parent Teacher Association and an 89-year member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

She enjoyed stenciling and pencil sketching, and was a fantastic seamstress.

Her husband of 57 years, former Portsmouth Fire Chief Frederick R. Crompton, died in 1983.

She is survived by a son, Robert J. Crompton of Palm Coast, Fla.; a daughter, Ann C. Carberry of Ocala, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Crompton; a brother, Frank Flanagan; and sisters Mary, Dorothy and Eileen.

CROMPTON - Margaret A. Crompton, 96, formerly of Portsmouth, died Aug. 10, 2001, in Florida. A graveside service will be held at a later date. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Florida Home Health Care Inc., P.O. Box 350215, Palm Coast, FL 32135. Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, is in charge of arrangements.

Peter W. Goddard

PORTSMOUTH - Peter W. Goddard, 47, of 8 Wilson Road, died at home on Monday, Aug. 13, 2001.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on June 18, 1954, he was a son of Warren and Yvonne (Landry) Goddard, of Portsmouth.

He was employed for many years as a property manager, and he was a communicant of St. James Church.

In addition to his parents, survivors include four sisters, Mary Brende of Hermann, Mo., Margaret Becotteof of Norwich, Conn., Ruth Hadley of Newmarket, and Sr. Mary Grace (Sara Jane) Goddard of Baltic, Conn.; seven brothers, Paul of Chesterfield, Mo., John of San Marcos, Calif., Philip of Nashua, Timothy of Carpentersville, Ill., Matthew of Hiram, Ga., Thomas of Charlotte, N.C., and 1st Lt. Andrew Goddard, U.S. Army, stationed in Germany; 22 nieces and nephews; three grandnieces and -nephews; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

GODDARD - Peter W. Goddard, 47, of 8 Wilson Road, Portsmouth, died Aug. 13, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Donna E. Hunter

HAMPTON - Donna E. Hunter, 86, of 10 Ann's Lane, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of her death.

Born in Hampton on June 1, 1915, she was a daughter of Walter and Laura (Bragg) Brown, and was a 1933 graduate of Hampton Academy. A lifelong resident of Hampton, she was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm, in 1974, and by her brothers and sister, Walter Brown, Raymond Brown, Winston Brown and Rita Bernier.

A very active woman, she maintained her home and gardens and enjoyed outings with family and friends. She was a loving and generous mother and grandmother.

Family members include one daughter, Pamela D. Fisher and her husband, William, of North Berwick, Maine; two grandsons, Matthew R. Dingle and his wife, Sarah, of Newburgh, Maine, and Nathan H. Dingle and his wife, Wendy, and their children, Hannah and Jacob, all of Lousiville, Ky.; two step-grandchildren, William Fisher of Arlington, Mass., and Bryan Fisher of Hampton; one nephew, Raymond Brown of Salisbury, Mass.; and one niece, Marilyn Bernier of Bedford, N.H.

HUNTER - Donna E. Hunter, 86, of 10 Ann's Lane, Hampton, died Aug. 13, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the High Street Cemetery in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. At 6:30 p.m., the family will lead a celebration of her life.

Robert E. Lewis

WESTMINSTER, Mass. - Robert E. Lewis, 80, a chemical engineer, of 113 East Gardner Road, formerly of Leominster, died Aug. 13, 2001, of complications from lung disease. Born in Pepin, Wisc., he was a son of Catherine (Ruggles) Lewis and Everett Drake Lewis. He was a 10th-generation descendant of Governor William Bradford of Massachusetts.

He attended the University of Wisconsin and later graduated from Northeastern University. During World War II, he served as a radio operator in the Merchant Marine, stationed on Gallops Island in Boston Harbor. He was owner and president of Marion Plastics in Fitchburg, Mass., and was an expert in thermo-plastics, consulting at such places as MIT in Cambridge. He also worked for a time at Lever Brothers, Foster Grant and Enron Corp.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth D. (Mazzola) Lewis; nine children, Elizabeth L. Bowen of Westminster, Mass., Mary Ellen Letarte of Lunenburg, Mass., Robert G. Lewis of Gloucester, Mass., Christine A. Gagne of Bark River, Mich., Margaret R. Lewis of Waterville, Maine, John E. Lewis of Charlotte, N.C., James A. Lafond-Lewis of Boston, Mass., Thomas M. Walker-Lewis of South Berwick, Maine, and Martha J. Lewis of Charleston, S.C.; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Cocuzzo of Bourne, Mass.; and two brothers, George and Richard Lewis, both of Charlotte, N.C.

He was predeceased by his brothers Ralph, Donald and Howard Lewis.

LEWIS - Robert E. Lewis, 80, of 113 East Gardner Road, Westminster, Mass., died Aug. 13, 2001. The funeral will be at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, from the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Westminster, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held at noon at St. Edward the Confessor Church, Church Street, Westminster, followed by burial in Woodside Cemetery, Narrows Road, Westminster, Mass. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday. Donations may be made in his name to the Beacon of Hope, St. Edward the Confessor Church, or to the Westminster Historical Society, 110 Main St., Westminster, MA 01473.

Frank P. Willette

HAMPTON - The funeral for Frank P. Willette, 79, of 10 Elliot St., was held Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Joseph X. O'Connor, OSA, was the celebrant. Salvatore DiVincenzo was the altar server. Judith Kish was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. Michael P. Willette offered words of remembrance. Burial followed at the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father O'Connor.

Meda J. Barker

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Meda J. Barker, 84, of 33 Brown Road, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. Services were conducted in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor, officiated. Ellen Pond was organist/pianist and Jane Smith was soloist. Burial followed at the West View Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lawrence. Pallbearers were Luke Taylor, Rodney Barker Jr., Brian Day, Kevin Barker, Scott Baker, Michael Barker and Jason Barker.

Herbert F. Baxter III

SEABROOK - The funeral for Herbert F. "Cubby" Baxter III, 38, of 14 Janvrin Drive, was held Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Pastor Ted McCurdy of the Rand Memorial Church officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends. After cremation, interment was Tuesday at the Hillside Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Pastor McCurdy.

Josephine DiMario

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Josephine DiMario, 77, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the home of her son, Dr. Richard DiMario of Cape Neddick.

She was the daughter of the late Leonardo and Anunziata Scaramuzzino, who settled in Kenilworth, N.J., in 1915, from Calabria, Italy.

She was a lifelong resident of Kenilworth and spent the last two years of her life with her son in Cape Neddick during her illness.

She was a medical secretary for 15 years in New Jersey and prior to that was employed by General Motors for many years.

She was the wife of the late Kenilworth Police Chief Joseph DiMario, and the mother of the late Joseph DiMario Jr. of Freehold, N.J.

Besides her son, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rosmary Tortorello of Kenilworth; a sister, Jean Pazienza of Kenilworth; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held Aug. 3 in New Jersey.

Stanley J. Drobisewski

DOVER - Stanley J. Drobisewski, 81, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth on Jan. 5, 1920, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley J. Drobisewski. He attended St. Patrick School and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, class of 1938.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He retired after working many years in the construction industry, and was a charter member of the Laborers Union Local No. 976. He was an avid golfer and a former member of the Wentworth Fairways.

Survivors include three sisters, Stella Bunn of Corpus Christi, Texas, Jane Finney of Norfolk, Va., and Victoria Finney of Portsmouth; his good friend, David David; several nieces and nephews; and the nieces and nephews of his longtime companion, the late Ann Casey of Dover.

DROBISEWSKI - Stanley J. Drobisewski, 81, of Dover, died Aug. 14, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours are 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Donna E. Hunter

HAMPTON - The funeral for Donna E. Hunter, 86, of 10 Ann's Lane, was held Thursday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Graveside services were conducted in the High Street Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Mrs. Hunter's family offered words of remembrance at the funeral home Wednesday evening.

John J. Wholey

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for John J. Wholey, 78, of 921 Greenland Road, were held Aug. 2, 2001. Wholey was the former mayor of Portsmouth.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Agapit Jean. The pall that draped the casket was placed by his daughters, Shawn Pelech and Gail Wholey. The crucifix was placed on the casket by his wife, Betty Wholey.

Readings were given by Phil Labranch and Maureen Labranch Tremblay. Organist was Richard Gremlitz, soloist was Carolyn Morse-Finn and cantor was Kitty Crotty. The eucharistic gifts were presented by Shawn and Gail. The eulogy was delivered by his grandchildren, John Pelech and Cate Pelech.

Burial was in the Wholey family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Father Jean conducting the committal. Words of remembrance were said at the grave by Peter Weeks.

Pallbearers were John Pelech, Bernard Pelech, Ted Connors, Peter Weeks, Robert Watt, Phil Labranch and Steve Harris.

Nathaniel J. Spead

LACONIA - Nathaniel J. Spead, 84, formerly of 65 Dartmouth St., died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001.

He was born April 7, 1917 in Manchester, the son of Nathaniel and Helen (Drouin) Spead. He graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1936, and from St. Anselm College in 1940. Mr. Spead was a longtime resident of Laconia and was a cost analyst for Scott & Williams for 37 years. He also worked in the Town Clerk's Office for the town of Meredith.

Mr. Spead was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Laconia.

Mr. Spead was an avid fly fisherman and was a member of the Belknap County Sportsmen's Club.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Richard J. Spead, of New Hampton, James A. Spead of Clearwater, Fla., and William A Spead of Brentwood; two daughters, Gayle Mullikin of Bradenton Beach, Fla., and Maureen Winternitz of Portland, Pa.; eight granchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Second Lt. Richard K. Spead who died in World War II.

SPEAD - Nathaniel J. Spead, 84, formerly of 65 Dartmouth St., Laconia, died on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Laconia. Msgr. Thomas Clancy will officiate assisted by two Benedictine Monks of St. Anselm College. Burial will follow in Bayside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Spead Family Scholarship Fund, St. Anselm College, 100 St. Anselm Drive, Manchester, NH 03102. George A. Lagassa

EXETER - George A. Lagassa, of 7 Riverwoods Drive, died on Monday morning Aug. 6, 2001, following a period of deteriorating health.

George was born Nov. 30, 1915, in Green Bay, Wis., the son of the late George J. and Catherine (Gagnon) Lagassa.

He spent his childhood in several locations in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He married Dorothy Zabinski on Oct. 23, 1936, in Two Rivers, Wis.; and they settled in Sheboygan, Wis., where their two children were born.

Mr. Lagassa had a successful career in manufacturing and held management positions with Bolens Products, Aeroquip Co., Titeflex Inc., Standard Thomson Inc., and Zero/Halliburton. He retired in 1986 as president of Fluid Conditioning Products Inc. in Lititz, Pa.

He lived in Sheboygan, Wis.; Jackson, Mich.; Longmeadow, Mass.; Wayland, Mass.; Sun Valley, Calif.; Morristown, N.J.; Lancaster, Pa.; and North Hampton before moving to Riverwoods at Exeter when it opened in 1996.

He was respected as an outstanding employer with a knack for getting the best out of people and for knowing how to get to the root of a problem. Mr. Lagassa was a member of the Jackson, Mich., Lions Club, the Springfield, Mass., Rotary Club and the Springfield Country Club. He was an avid golfer and a lover of good food; and as a Wisconsin native, he introduced many New England friends to the gastronomic pleasures of Sheboygan Bratwurst.

He will be remembered for his devotion to wife and family, his diplomacy, his sense of humor, his sage advice, his sentimentality and his wonderful story telling.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his sister Catherine; and his brother Lloyd, who gave his life in World War II.

Survivors include his son, George K. Lagassa and his wife, Peri (Powell), of North Hampton; his daughter, Barbara Tack of Exeter; two granddaughters, P. Phelps and C. Beach Lagassa of North Hampton; and his grandson Jason Roach and his wife, Aki Takanezawa, of Redondo Beach, Calif.

LAGASSA - George A. Lagassa of 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, died Aug. 6, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, in the Great Bay Room at Riverwoods of Exeter. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
