Anastasia M. Rafferty

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Anastasia (Stasia) M. Rafferty, 94, of Essex Avenue, Portsmouth, were held recently from the Farrell Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor John E. Molan, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Burns and the Rev. Michael Griffin. Organist was Maureen Sheehan and soloists, Christine Stadler and Joyce Loughlin Bastille.

The funeral pall was placed on the casket by Mary Loughlin and Stasia Loughlin Marple. Readings were given by Margaret Rafferty, Conall Loughlin and Bernard Loughlin. The gifts were brought to the altar by Peter, Brendan and Garrett Loughlin.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, with committal prayers by Monsignor Molan.

Bearers were her nephews Bernard and Peter Loughlin, Shaun, Kevin and Brian Rafferty and great-nephews, Brendan, Garrett and Conall Loughlin.

Marion Armsden

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held for Marion Armsden of Eliot, Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. Dr. David Avery, of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated. Burial was at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Friends and family gathered at the church after the service for a time of sharing and remembrance.

Eleanor Mae Perkins

York, Maine - A private graveside committal service and burial was held on Aug. 30, 2001, at the First Parish Cemetery in York for Eleanor Mae Perkins, 74, of Mountain Road, York, Maine. The Rev. Judson Stone of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church, officiated. In attendance were Mrs. Perkins loving family. Bearers were her beloved grandsons, David Johnson, Clint Hutchins, Matthew Hutchins and her beloved nephew, Jeremiah Lewis. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Nichole V. Miller

ELIOT, Maine - Nichole Virginia Miller, 16, of Sargents Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Trauma Center as a result of a motor vehicle crash.

Born on July 30, 1985, in Minot, N.D., she was the daughter of Karen M. Denault of Eliot and Jeffrey A. Miller of Portsmouth, N.H.

Her first love was her family, and she enjoyed spending time with them and with her very special boyfriend, Duncan Rea. Many who knew her describe her as fun-loving and kind. She loved animals, having rescued many and brought them for rehabilitation to the Center for Wildlife in York.

She would have been entering the junior class at Marshwood High School in a few days, and she was looking forward to spending time with her friends again, entering the Flora Culture Program and working with flowers, which is something she enjoyed very much.

She is survived by her parents; grandparents, Alice Denault of Kittery and "Pop Pops," Tom Derosia of Kittery, Charles Denault Sr. of New York, Joseph Miller of Dorchester, Mass, and Nadine Miller of Portsmouth; a brother, "BJ" Miller of Eliot; a step-brother, Bobbie Chase of Portsmouth; a half-sister, Ashley Mcgourty of Eliot; two half-brothers, Sean and William Miller of Portsmouth; aunts and uncles, Charles and Cindy Denault and Robert and Sue Denault of Kittery, and Joelly, John, James and Jeremy Miller of Portsmouth, N.H.; as well as a special great-uncle, Burt Johansen of Watertown, Mass.

MILLER - Nichole Virginia Miller, 16, of Sargents Lane in Eliot, Maine, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Trauma Center as a result of a motor vehicle crash. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m., today, from the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Donations may be made in her memory to the Center for Wildlife, P.O. Box 620, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Manuel Traveis

SEABROOK - Manuel Traveis, 82, of Seabrook, died of natural causes Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Anna Jacques Hospital. Born in Winthrop, Mass., and a longtime Seabrook resident, he was the son of the late Joseph and Florence (Rogers) Traveis.

He worked for more than 40 years as a chemical engineer for Dupont in Wilmington, Del. He was a dedicated father and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Muriel (Ganshirt) Traveis; two sons, Paul and his wife, Charlotte Traveis, of Saugus, Mass., Gary and his wife, Sara Boore-Traveis, of Los Gatos, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy Hastings and her husband, Donald, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Patricia Hooker and her husband, Andrew, of Youngstown, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph Traveis of Boston, Mass. and Albert Traveis of Ipswich, Mass.; two sisters, Madeline Raymond of Poway, Calif. and Ruth Solazzo of Boston, Mass.; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

TRAVEIS - Manuel Traveis, 82, of Seabrook, died Aug. 31, 2001. A funeral service will be held from the Oceanside Funeral Home, 34 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, Mass. Private interment will be held at Bayview Crematory in Seabrook. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 100 Water St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

Irene C. Dionne

KITTERY, Maine - Irene C. (Beaulac) Dionne, 87, the wife of the late Herve Dionne, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Langdon Place in Dover, N.H.

Born in Manchester, N.H. on July 14, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Israel and Augustine (Therrialt) Beaulac.

Before moving to the Kittery/Portsmouth area, she lived in Manchester where she worked as a hairdresser. Upon moving to this area she owned and operated the Kittery Maytag Laundromat on Government Street for 40 years. She was a past member of the Portsmouth Country Club.

She was a member of St. Raphael's Church for many years.

She is survived by one son, Donald N. Dionne of Gonic, N.H.; two daughters, Lorraine Y. Perry of Manchester, N.H., and Pauline C. Brown of Kittery, Maine; one sister, Yvonne Roy of Danvers, Mass. She will also be sadly missed by her beloved 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Doris Dionne, a brother, Gerard Beaulac; a sister, Cecile Desaulnier; and her great-granddaughter, Tina Dionne.

DIONNE - Irene C. Dionne, 87, of Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 29, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at St. Raphael's Church in Kittery, with the Rev. Real Nadeau, officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Rachel Smith

SALISBURY, Mass. - Rachel Smith, 87, of 23 Beach Road, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Exeter Healthcare in Exeter, N.H.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., March 14, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Abalon and Annie Haddad.

Mrs. Smith worked at the Davisville Credit Union in North Kingston, R.I., as a customer service representative for several years, retiring in 1975.

She had resided here since 1984, coming from North Kingstown, R.I.

Mrs. Smith's enjoyment was her love for her family and cooking.

She was the wife of the late Wayne P. Smith, who died in 1984, and was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Haddad, and a sister, Nellie Moghab.

Family members include one son, Jibran W. Smith of North Hampton; two grandchildren, Jibran D. Smith and Jared Smith; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

SMITH - Rachel Smith, 87, of 23 Beach Road, Salisbury, Mass., died Aug. 31, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday. Burial will be in the Long Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, Mass. If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Mildred V. Sullivan

YORK, Maine - Mildred V. Sullivan, 90, a resident of Harbor Home in York and formerly of Biddeford, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Harbor Home following a long illness.

She was born July 13, 1911, in Indian Orchard, Mass., a daughter of Alexander and Mabel Youmell. She graduated from local schools.

She was employed by the city of Springfield, Mass., as the assistant administrator to the Public Building for 58 years.

She was a communicant of Saint Mary's Church of Wells, and she enjoyed bowling.

She was wife of the late John P. Sullivan, who died in 1983.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Blakely of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Edward Youmell of North Carolina and Clement Youmell of Agawam, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

SULLIVAN - Mildred V. Sullivan, 90, a resident of Harbor Home in York, Maine, formerly of Biddeford, Maine, died Sept. 1, 2001. A memorial service at Saint Mary's Church in Wells, Maine, will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

Timothy L. Wentworth

YORK, Maine - Timothy Leo Wentworth, 75, of York Street, died unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Watertown, Mass., the son of John and Mary Elizabeth (O'Brien) Wentworth.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

During his career as a barber until his retirement in the 1980s, he owned many barber shops including the Razor's Edge in Sudbury, Mass., for 10 years, and shops in Framingham and Brimfield, Mass. He and his wife had moved to Brimfield in 1962, and to York six years ago.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard and working around his house. He was an opera fan.

He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

He was the husband of Ellen J. (Kenrick) Wentworth of York for 53 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Timothy Wentworth of Southbridge, Mass., Daniel Wentworth of Cooperstown, N.Y., William Wentworth of Pomfret Center, Conn., and Dennis Wentworth of Wales, Mass.; one daughter, Amy McCurdy of Raeford, N.C.; one sister, Mary Keenan of South Boston, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

WENTWORTH - Timothy L. Wentworth of York, Maine, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York Street. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Mary H. Philbrick

RYE BEACH - Mary H. Philbrick, 79, of 20 Causeway Road, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Carl A. and Florence (Marden) Howe. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1940, and Plymouth Business College in 1941.

She retired in 1987 from Weatherwatch Heating Services Inc. after 46 years of service.

She was a member of the Rye Congregational Church and past president of the Women's Fellowship of the church. She was a charter member and past president of the Seacoast Business and Professional Club, and member and past president of the Rye Over 55 Club.

She was the wife of the late Emmons B. Philbrick, who died in 1989.

Survivors include one brother, William A. Howe of Rye; and three nieces, Gail Shannon, Linda Howe and Karen Howe.

PHILBRICK - Mary H. Philbrick, of 20 Causeway Road, Rye Beach, died Sept. 1, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Rye Congregational Church, Rye Center. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private interment will be in the Central Cemetery in Rye. At Mrs. Philbrick's request, there will be no visiting hours and flowers be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Shirley and Helen Philbrick Trust, c/o Rye Public Library, 581 Washington Road, Rye NH 03870. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Frank J. Shea

PORTSMOUTH - Frank J. Shea, 93, of 188 Jones Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at SunBridge Care Center for Portsmouth.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., on June 23, 1908, the son of the late John and Alice (Finley) Shea. He had resided for many years in New Jersey, living in the towns of Newark, Irvington, Union, Summit and Sparta. He moved to Exeter in 1995 and to Portsmouth earlier this year.

He was a former member of the Massachusetts National Guard. He worked as a practical engineer, inventor and machinist for the Peter Wendel & Sons Company, a truck body manufacturer in Irvington, N.J.

He held a private pilot's license and enjoyed many years of recreational flying. In the late 1940s he and a friend flew from New Jersey to Norway, Maine.

He was a communicant of Saint Michael's Church in Exeter. He assisted with Masses both at the church and at the weekly Masses held at Langdon Place in Exeter. He served as a Eucharistic minister in Sparta, N.J., and was Past Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus in Irvington, N.J.

He was the husband of Anna M. (Wormer) Shea. They would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this month.

In addition to his wife, his family members include three sons, Eugene J. Shea of Rye, Owen T. Shea of North Easton, Mass., and Frank J. Shea Jr. of Franklin, Mass.; a daughter, Mary Ann Hill of Hampton Falls; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dennis P. Shea, in 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at Saint Michael's Church. The Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor of Saint James Church in Portsmouth was celebrant. John Kelly was soloist, and Denise Kelly was organist. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to N.H. Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 623, Manchester, NH 03105. Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home of Exeter.

Dorothy M. Bailey

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Dorothy M. Bailey, 75, of Timber Pines, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001. She was born in York, Maine, and had lived most of her life in Kittery, Maine. She came to Florida 17 years ago from York.

She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. She was a retired dietitian employed with the board of education. She worked on the Elections Board of Hernando County, Fla.

She is predeceased by husbands John Chase and Lawrence Buckley.

She is survived by her husband Everett of Timber Pines, Spring Hill, Fla.; two sons, Jack Chase of Navarre, Fla., and Jim Chase of Kodiak, Alaska; two stepdaughters, Ellen Hayden of York, Maine, and Patricia Buckley of Baltimore, Md.; one stepson, Michael Buckley of Rye, N.H.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Stiles M. Decker Jr.

HARDWICK, Vt. - Stiles Morrow Decker Jr., 87, died on Aug. 22, 2001, at Central Vermont Hospital.

Born into a Navy family on Sept. 20, 1913, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Stiles Morrow Decker Sr. and Madeleine Gigneau (Loomis) Decker.

During his career, he traveled to the Philippines, Hawaii, Trinidad, the Bahamas, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba, France, Italy, England, Portugal, Turkey and Australia. He was a member of the Class of 1935 of the U.S. Naval Academy. He also received a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

During World War II, he served as commanding officer of USS-SC 449 and USS-PC 542. He also served as executive officer of the USS Puffer (SS-268). While serving as the Puffer's "XO," the sub received a Presidential Unit Citation. Among numerous other decorations he was twice decorated with the Silver Star.After the end of World War II, he served as a member of the U.S. Naval Mission to Turkey, as shop superintendent at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and engineering officer of the Submarine Supply Center in Philadelphia. He also served as naval inspector for New York City. After retiring from the Navy, he worked in New York City for an engineering firm for six years before joining IBM Corp., where he spent the next 20 years, until his retirement in 1987.

Seacoast survivors include a daughter, Priscilla Cookson of South Berwick, Maine; a stepdaughter, Pamela Rice of Portsmouth; and two stepsons, John Winslow Rice of Portsmouth and Peter Peirce Rice of New Castle.
