Joseph Pease Conner Jr.

HAMPTON - Joseph Pease Conner Jr., 88, husband of Eleanor L. (Sandford) Conner, of 777 Lafayette Road, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth on Jan. 6, 1913, the son of the late Joseph Pease and Elizabeth (Perkins) Conner. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the University of New Hampshire.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He owned and operated Conner Carpet Care Inc. for 27 years.

He was a former member of the Rye Beach Planning Board, former director of Portsmouth Co-Operative Bank, a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 of Portsmouth, member of the Warwick Club, member of the Rotary Club, and a member of the Piscataqua Fish and Game Club.

Besides his wife of 27 years, survivors include his son, A. Bradley Conner of Greenland; daughter, Jane O'Leary of Watertown, N.Y.; two stepsons, Joseph Eberle III and Raymond H. Eberle, both of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a cousin, Mary Flanders; and several nieces and nephews.

CONNER - Joseph Pease Conner Jr., 88, of 777 Lafayette Road, Hampton, passed away Sept. 4, 2001. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the Chapel, Friday 6-8 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, NH-Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160; or to the Sandy Point Discovery Center, Depot Road, Stratham, NH 03885.

James A. Fitzgerald

SEABROOK - James A. Fitzgerald, 73, of 4 Virginia Lane, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., on April 29, 1928, the son of the late James A. and Florence E. (Anderson) Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald attended Weymouth (Mass.) High School. He was a truck driver for M. Martin DeMatteo Construction in Quincy for 30 years. He had resided in Seabrook since 1984, coming from Salisbury, Mass.

He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post No. 70 of Seabrook, the Teamsters Local No. 379 Heavy Construction, and the Moose Lodge No. 1601 of Newburyport, Mass.

He was the husband of Dorothy Fitzgerald for 26 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David Fitzgerald of Melbourne, Fla., and Scott Fitzgerald of Rockland, Mass.; a daughter, Catherine Fitzgerald of Wollaston, Mass.; a stepson, Donald Smith of Rockland, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Marjorie Godfried of Holbrook, Mass.; eight grandchildren; his sister, Elizabeth Phelps of Lady Lake, Fla.; one niece and two nephews; and his first wife, Betty Fitzgerald of Wollaston, Mass.

FITZGERALD - James A. Fitzgerald, 73, of 4 Virginia Lane, Seabrook, died Sept. 4, 2001. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Friday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12 noon until the hour of the service. Following cremation, burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01710-4688.

Richard S. Dagley

GLOUCESTER, Mass. - Richard S. Dagley, 69, of 6 Gardner Terrace, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 5, 2001, in the Addison Gilbert Hospital, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Cannon) Dagley.

Born in Gloucester on Sept. 15, 1931, he was the son of the late George A. and Vera (Hautamaki) Dagley. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and had attended Gloucester public schools. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was honorably discharged in May of 1954.

Mr. Dagley was employed as a machinist at Murmac Machine for 18 years and then at Gloucester Engineering for 30 years, having retired in 1997.

He was a lifelong member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892. He was an avid woodworker, and loved his home and family.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Eddy of York, Maine; three grandchildren, Neil M. Sheehan of Portland, Maine, Matthew K. Sheehan of York, and Kelly Ann Maxwell of Guam; and his mother-in-law, Rebecca Cannon of Hollywood, Fla.

He was predeceased by a brother, George A. Dagley.

Sophie Karatzas

HAMPTON - Sophie (Kandilis) Karatzas, 86, formerly of Hampton, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Webster At Rye nursing facility after a lengthy illness.

Born in Manchester on Feb. 23, 1915, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Marina (Betsikos) Kandilis. Until her retirement, she had been employed for many years as an instructor at the J.F. McElwain Shoe Co. in Manchester.

She remained a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manchester and was a member of the Daughters of Penelope.

She was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Evan S. Karatzas, who died in 1990.

Members of her family include two sons, Nicholas and his wife, Lucille Karatzas of Hampton, and Philip Karatzas of Plymouth, Mass.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anne Newton and Athena Archambeault, both of Manchester; and two nieces, also of Manchester.

KARATZAS - Sophie (Kandilis) Karatzas, 86, formerly of Hampton, died Sept. 5, 2001. Calling hours at the McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., corner of Hanover Street, Manchester, will be today, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The Trisagion service will be conducted at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral with the Rev. Michael Kouremetis, dean of the cathedral, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Staff Recognition Fund at Webster At Rye Nursing Facility, 795 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870.

William M. Walker

STRATHAM - William M. Walker, 76, of Portsmouth Avenue, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Exeter Hospital, after a sudden illness.

A native of Gorham, he was born Feb. 22, 1925, the son of the late John M. and Susie (Hammond) Walker.

Formerly of Exeter, he has called Stratham home for the past 25 years. He was a graduate of Gorham High School, where he excelled in baseball, and received his associate's degree in accounting at the Manchester School of Business.

He retired from Munters/Cargo-Caire in Amesbury, Mass., after 22 years, having also worked at Conway in Exeter as an accountant. He also worked for 12 years for Shaw's in Stratham and Seabrook.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radioman 1st Class. He was vice commander at the Philip Covey V.F.W. Post 2181 of Exeter. He was a 50-year member of the Gorham Masonic Lodge. He loved to spend his free time gardening and with his family.

He is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Palladino and Rebecca S. Southworth, both of Stratham; two sons, Russell C. Walker of Exeter and Jack Walker of Newmarket; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandsons; and a brother, George M. Walker of Exeter.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Harold (Bud) Walker and Raymond Walker; a sister, Ramona Nordholm; and a grandson, Joshua W. Stow.

WALKER - William M. Walker, 76, of Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, died Sept. 6, 2001. Calling hours will be Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Stratham Community Church. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine will officiate, followed by full military honors at the Maple Lane Cemetery in Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the DAV Chapter 13, 32 Court St., Exeter, NH 03833 The Brewitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rachel Smith

SALISBURY, Mass. - The funeral for Rachel Smith, 87, of 23 Beach Road, who died Aug. 31, 2001, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton, N.H. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Long Hill Cemetery, Salisbury, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.

Mary H. Philbrick

RYE BEACH - The funeral for Mary H. Philbrick, 79, of 20 Causeway Road, Rye Beach, who died Sept. 1, 2001, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. Services were conducted at the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. John A. Solie, pastor of the Rye Congregational Church, officiated. Donna Lewallen was organist and Pam Sheerin was soloist.

Private committal services were conducted by the Rev. Solie in the Central Cemetery, prior to the service. Pallbearers were Roger Philbrick, Richard Philbrick, Stephen Philbrick, Alden Philbrick, Don Pondgrace and Bob Rawding.

Alice E. Grandmaison

HAMPTON - Alice E. (Donovan) Grandmaison, 85, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at her home.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., on April 27, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary "Mollie" (Byrne) Donovan.

She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lawrence. She worked for New England Telephone, now Verizon, for 41 years, retiring in 1976. She later enjoyed working as a hostess at the Ashworth by the Sea hotel and at the gift shop at the Hampton Beach Casino for a number of years.

She was a longtime resident of Lawrence, coming to Hampton in 1976. She was a former communicant of St. Patrick's Church in South Lawrence and attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Quota Club and the local Seacoast Women's Group.

She loved the beach and enjoyed walking along the wall at North Beach. She was the judge during boogie board competitions and loved watching the grandchildren growing up. She loved lobsters, steamers and seafood. She also loved to travel with her cruise buddies and traveled to Ireland with her children.

She also loved the mountains in the winter and summer of New England and all they inspire. She also enjoyed going to Florida, spending time with her family.

She was the wife of the late Paul A. Grandmaison, who died in 1986, and was also predeceased by her first husband, Joseph T. Dolan, who died in 1969.

Family members include one daughter, Doris Michaud and her husband, Ed, of Atkinson; one son, Christopher Dolan and his wife, Susan, of Hampton; one stepson, John P. Grandmaison and his wife Pat, of Hampton; two brothers, John Donovan of Revere, Mass., and Edward Donovan of Stuart, Fla.; two sisters, Helen Driscoll of Methuen, Mass., and Marion Chafetz of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Beaudoin, Melissa Finneran, Danielle Michaud, Allison Dolan, and Megan Dolan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, William Donovan and Francis Donovan.

GRANDMAISON - Alice E. (Donovan) Grandmaison, 85, of Hampton, died Sept. 7, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Roomet J. Aring

PORTSMOUTH - Roomet Joost Aring, 61, died suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Estonia on March 3, 1940, and immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1952. He and his family moved to Portsmouth in 1976 after falling in love with the city on a visit. He was an award-winning architect and an acclaimed artist and was strongly dedicated to the Portsmouth community. Shortly after arriving in Portsmouth, he and his wife, Monika, had a dream that the Portsmouth downtown would be revitalized and, as a result, they founded Pro Portsmouth, and organized the first Market Square Day. Among his membership in many local organizations, Mr. Aring was a dedicated Rotarian.

Other than his family, Roomet's passion was beauty and light. He always searched and found the beauty in people and in the world around him. This was reflected in his wonderful art. He had a kind, gentle and generous spirit and all who knew him felt his love and warmth. Words cannot describe how much we will miss him.

He was the husband of 36 years to Monika Aring. He was the loving father of Antje Bourdages of Stratham, and Emily Aring Carpenter of Seattle, Wash. He was the adored grandfather of Alec and Lea Bourdages and of Finn Carpenter. He had two sisters and three brothers and was uncle to many nieces and nephews.

ARING - Roomet Joost Aring, 61, died Sept. 5, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington. If desired, donations may be made to The Portsmouth Rotary Charitable Fund in Memory of Roomet Joost Aring. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home of Portsmouth.

Elmina D. Perrella

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Mrs. Elmina DeCicco Perrella, 88, of St. Augustine since 1996 and formerly of York, Maine, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at St. John's Health Care Center, St. Augustine, after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Archangelo and Rosina Pescatore DeCicco.

She was employed as a glovemaker during World War II and for many years of her life. She was best known for her wonderful Italian cooking.

She was the wife of Alfred J. Perrella, whom she married in 1935.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Rosemarie P. Lesswing of Kittery, Maine, and Port Orange, and Deborah J. Perrella of St. Augustine; grandchildren, Lynette Lesswing Asselta, Christopher D. Perrella and Alexandra W. Perrella, all of St. Augustine, Frederick M. Lesswing of Ft. Lauderdale, and Laura K. Lesswing of Berwick, Maine; great-granddaughter Maya Li Asselta of St. Augustine; nephew Nicholas A. Cannizzo Sr. of Johnstown, N.Y.; niece Rose Richardson of Gloversville, N.Y.; many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Mary Cannizzo; two brothers, Nicholas and Anthony DeCicco; her son, Daniel J. Perrella; and grandson, Eric Anthony Lesswing.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church, Cayadutta Street, Johnstown, N.Y., with the Rev. James Fitzmaurice as celebrant.

Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Joseph Pease Conner Jr., 88, 777 Lafayette Road, were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

The flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Conner's wife, Eleanor L. (Sandford) Conner.

Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Gum.

Jane L. Ward

RYE - Memorial services for Jane L. (Maynard) Ward, 74, of 795 Washington Road, were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine, pastor of the Stratham Community Church, gave scripture readings and words of reflection. Words of remembrance were given by Robert Dunn and Karen Alexander. Soloist was Judy Ringer and organist was Malcolm Austin.

In attendance were members of the North Congregational Church.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
