Barbara D. DiBella

NORTH HAMPTON - Barbara Dawson DiBella, 81, of 7 Cotton Farm Lane, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 26, 1920, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Frank N. and Anne (Witham) Dawson, the youngest of three children.

She graduated from Eliot High School, Class of 1937, and lived most of her life in the Seacoast area. Following graduation, she moved with her sister, Mildred, to New York City, where she spent a year exploring the city.

Upon her return to Portsmouth, she met and subsequently married her husband of 39 years, John J. DiBella. She and her husband, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, staff sergeant and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, were married in St. Louis, Mo., on April 13, 1942.

After her husband's discharge from the Army, they moved to Hartford, Conn., where they started a family. She began a career with the telephone company, but soon realized that she would rather be home with her children.

Her greatest accomplishment, as she would tell it, were her three children - her three-leaf clover. Her devotion to her family was well-known, as was the close bond she shared with all three children. While each child was unique, they all inherited her strength, courage, compassion, stubborn independence, Yankee ingenuity, and above all, her wry sense of humor.

The family moved back to Portsmouth in 1952, and to Greenland in 1968. She then joined her daughter, Betsy, and son-in-law, Chris, at their home in North Hampton in 1998. She shared a great love of nature, enjoyed cataloging the various birds she spotted over many years and also had quite a green thumb. While most people waited for the groundhog to surface, her neighbors knew spring had arrived when they saw her bent over her flower garden, digging in the dirt.

She loved craft fairs, yard sales, crossword puzzles and slot machines on those occasional trips to Las Vegas. Her sweet tooth was legendary and she was known to have a cookie or pastry tucked away somewhere in case of emergency. In her sweater was a tissue in one pocket and a piece of candy in the other.

As a lover of animals, she joined her daughter in the fight to rescue homeless and abandoned cats in the Seacoast area.

She was predeceased by her husband, John J. DiBella; a son, Peter J. DiBella; her sister, Mildred Dawson Saffell; and her brother, Frank A. Dawson.

Having lost her eldest son Peter aboard the USS Thresher on April 10, 1963, she became a fixture at every Thresher memorial service held in the Seacoast area, where a silent bond was formed with the families of the other Thresher crew members.

Survivors include her son, Frank J. DiBella of Los Angeles, Calif.; her daughter, Elizabeth DiBella-Young and son-in-law, Chris Young, of North Hampton; several nieces and nephews; and all of those touched by her humor, generosity and compassion.

DiBELLA - Barbara Dawson DiBella, 81, of 7 Cotton Farm Lane, North Hampton, died Sept. 12, 2001. Friends are invited to meet with the family at a memorial visitation at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Sunday, 2-4 p.m. At a private ceremony, Barbara's cremated remains will be scattered in the Atlantic Ocean to be reunited with her son, Peter. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Seacoast Area Feline Education and Rescue, P.O. Box 1531, Hampton, NH 03843; or to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03855-0196.
