Patricia S. Aykroyd

HAMPTON - Patricia S. Aykroyd, 80, died Sept. 24, 2001 at the Partridge House after a brief illness.

Born in Spring Grove, Ind., on Sept. 21, 1921, she was the oldest daughter of the late Clyde M. Semler and Louise Mather. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor of arts degree in 1942. While attending college she met Albert W. (Wes) Aykroyd, whom she married shortly after her graduation.

As the wife of an Army officer, she moved from post to post as Wes' unit prepared to deploy to Europe. When deployment came in September 1944, she moved to Akron, Ohio, with her year-old son Geoffrey to wait for Wes' return.

In 1946 Patricia began a 26-year stint as an Army wife. She met the challenging demands of frequent moves and raising a family (often by herself) with grace and poise. From 1948 to 1952 while living in Tokyo, she mastered the arts of Japanese painting, flower arranging and dancing, and demonstrated her skills in exhibits with Japanese artists and dancers.

While at Fort Knox, Ky., she served as an American Red Cross Grey Lady (volunteer); in Heidelberg, Germany, she was the co-president of the German-American Club. An inveterate traveler, she took advantage of overseas postings to learn the local language, meet the people, and travel - interests she passed on to her children. At the same time, she became interested in hooked rugs, cross-stitch and knitting.

In 1972 she moved with Wes to Portsmouth, where she quickly became involved with numerous activities, most notably, the Guild of Strawbery Banke and the Altar Guild of St. John's Church. Despite her many travels, she always felt a special relationship with the people and city of Portsmouth, where she lived for 29 years, longer than anywhere else in her long life.

She is survived by her daughter, Anne Madison of Portsmouth; two sons, Geoffrey B. Aykroyd Sr. and his wife Janie of San Antonio, Texas, and Douglas S. Aykroyd and his wife Elizabeth of Hampton; her sister, Muriel (Mimi) S. Bergdorf and her husband Clarence of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at 4:30 p.m., at the New Castle Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Patricia Aykroyd may be made to Strawbery Banke, P.O. Box 300, Portsmouth, NH 03802-0300.
