Joseph W. Vincent

GREENLAND - Joseph W. Vincent, 62, of Greenland, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

He was born in Concord, Mass., Feb. 18, 1939, the son of Jennie (Sieliski) Vincent of Hudson, Mass., and the late Joseph Vincent.

Mr. Vincent was a veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. He worked for D.G. O'Brien Inc. in Seabrook for 23 years, retiring in 1999.

He had resided in Greenland the past 24 years, coming from East Brunswick, N.J. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, playing with his grandchildren, and was a former member of the Elks.

His brother Thomas Vincent predeceased him.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 38 years, Donna M. (Ferris) Vincent.

In addition to his wife and mother, family members include one daughter, Dawn Mattson and her husband David of Hampton; one son, Michael Vincent and his wife Trisha of Greenland; grandchildren Bradley and Morgan of Hampton; one sister Jackie Plourde and her husband Jim of Littleton, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews; and friends.

VINCENT - Joseph W. Vincent of Greenland died Sept. 24, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, on Thursday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, (today) on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02116.

David S. Wells

PORTSMOUTH - David S. Wells, 78, of 36 Wilson Road, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Corning, N.Y., he was the son of Charles and Marjorie (Southwick) Wells. He was a resident of Portsmouth for the past 48 years.

Mr. Wells served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a welder and nuclear instructor at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1979 with 32 years of service to his country.

He was a coach for many years for the Little League and Babe Ruth League. He enjoyed boating, fishing and bowling. He was a member of VFW Post No. 168 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No. 4.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen (Zimmer) Wells; a daughter, Patricia Donahue of Kennebunk, Maine; a son, Michael Wells of Dover; stepsons, Donald Landry of Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Landry of Portsmouth, and Christian Landry of Epping; stepdaughters, Karen Christy of Portsmouth, Pamela McKinney of Rochester, and Lisa Landry of Dover; 17 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Mary Pryslopski of Corning, N.Y.

Mr. Wells was predeceased by his first wife, Reita (Mullaney) Wells, in 1981.

WELLS - David S. Wells, 78, of 36 Wilson Road, Portsmouth, died Sept. 25, 2001. A memorial service will be held in the near future and will be announced by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH 03101; or to the Babe Ruth League, c/o Portsmouth Recreation Department, 135 Daniel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

McGEE - Catherine C. (Foley) McGee of Brighton Mass., died Sept. 23, 2001. She was the devoted mother of Joan M. of Boston, Mass., Catherine A. of Hampton, Pauline M. Doris and her husband Edward of Brentwood, and Madeline C.; beloved daughter of the late Mark A. and Bridget (Kirrane) Foley Sr.; sister of Edward Foley and Mark A. Foley Jr., both of Brighton, Mass., Alice Borbee of West Roxbury, Mass., and Elizabeth Haddigan of Foxboro, Mass.; loving grandmother of Nicky James and Kevin Edward. Funeral from the Lehman & Reen Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill Ave. (near Brighton Courthouse), Brighton, Mass., Thursday at 8 a.m. Funeral Mass in St. Columbkille Church at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours (today) on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass. The funeral home is handicapped accessible.

Walter B. Philbrick

GROTON, Conn. - Walter B. Philbrick, age 66, of 70 South Road, Groton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, surrounded by his family. He passed away after a courageous battle with leukemia.

He was born in Exeter, N.H., March 8, 1935, the son of Harry and Rachel Hadley Philbrick. He married Priscilla Fellows, June 25, 1955, in Kittery, Maine.

Philbrick was a Navy veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1973 as the Master Diver at the former submarine escape training tank at the submarine base in Groton. He then worked for North East Utilities at Millstone Nuclear Power plant as a maintenance mechanic and as an instructor at the training unit, retiring in 2000.

He was an active member of the Groton Heights Baptist Church, as well as a former trustee at the church, a Big Brother, member of the Navy Flying Club, and a former bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He was a private pilot and an avid bicyclist and sailor.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Geary Philbrick of Griswold; daughters, Lois Chiovoloni of Bristol, Susan Baillargeon of Colchester, and Melissa Lowry of Groton, all of Connecticut; three brothers, Channing Philbrick of Penfield, N.Y., Raymond Philbrick of Portsmouth, N.H., and Gerald Philbrick of Punta Gorda, Fla., and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Arlene Dow and Margaret Kidder.

Brian J Robshaw

EXETER - Brian Jon Robshaw, 19, of 19 Downing Court, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 28, 1981, in Exeter, son of Jon L. and Susan (Jenkins) Robshaw.

Brian was a lifelong resident of Exeter, having graduated from Exeter High School with the Class of 2001.

He had worked at Ronaldo's Restaurant in North Hampton for some time as a prep cook. He was going to attend culinary school to become a chef.

His passion was watching wrestling, and he especially loved the WWF.

He is survived by his parents of Exeter; his sister, Kristy Robshaw of Exeter; his paternal grandfather, Dr. John Robshaw of Stratham; his maternal grandparents, Joan Fitzgerald of Exeter and Merton Jenkins of Exeter; his great-grandmothers, Ethel Wadleigh and Bertha Jenkins, both of Exeter; his stepgrandfather, Robert Fitzgerald of Exeter; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

ROBSHAW - Brian Jon Robshaw, 19, of Downing Court, Exeter, died Sept. 27, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, Pine Street, Exeter. The Rev. John E. Denson Jr. will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of N.H., 1492 Elm St., Suite #1, Manchester, NH 03101.

Doris T. Hutchins

CAPE NEDDICK - Doris T. Hutchins, 94, of Cape Neddick, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at York Hospital.

She was born on May 10, 1907, in Cape Neddick, the daughter of Ocatavius and Velma (Matthews) Talpey. She was a 1924 graduate of York High School and attended Gorham Normal School.

She taught school for several years at the Agamenticus and York Beach Grammar schools. In 1930, she married Harry F. Hutchins and they lived in Cape Neddick for 69 years, until his death in 1999.

Mrs. Hutchins and her husband operated a lobster business for more than 20 years. She was locally known for her delicious lobster rolls. They also operated Pine Park Cabins in Cape Neddick.

She was a long time member of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church and the Ladies Circle.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. James (Faith) Webster of Cape Neddick. Two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

James Koromilas

DOVER - James Koromilas, 77, an attorney and political leader, died Saturday morning, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home, 36 Summer St., after a brief illness.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Dover, the son of Spyros and Angelica (Speliotis) Koromilas.

During World War II, he served in United States Army Air Force. As a B-17 lead navigator with the 8th Air Force, he flew 35 combat missions and received the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters and the European Theatre Ribbon with five battle stars. Continuing to serve in the Air Force Reserve as the Wing Intelligence Officer, he was recalled to duty for the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

After graduating from Amherst College with a degree in political science in 1949, he went on to earn three degrees from Brasenose College of Oxford University in England, including a law degree from the Honours School of Jurisprudence and a Master of Arts degree.

His legal career first took him to Paris, France, where he served as the U.S. Special Representative on the General Counsel's Staff. He later moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as legal advisor to the Civil Aeronautics Administration, President Eisenhower's Air Coordination Committee, and the Federal Aviation Agency.

In 1960 he married Johnnie Daughtry of Kenansville, N.C. and returned to Dover to establish a private practice in law, which he continued for 40 years.

He had a very active political career, first running for U.S. Congress in 1962. In 1964 he served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.

He served three terms in the N.H. Senate, serving the 24th District from 1967 to 1972. He was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, championing Freedom of Information legislation and fighting taxes. In 1972, he was a Republican gubernatorial candidate.

He was a member of the Strafford County Bar Association, serving as president in 1976; the New Hampshire Bar Association, serving on the Board of Governors from 1978 to 1980; international bar associations; and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He took great pride in his legal work and through it touched thousands of lives.

He enjoyed traveling frequently to England with his family to visit the sites as well as his friends and colleagues. He took great pleasure in classical music, the daily New York Times, flower gardening and cooking. He was proud of his Greek heritage and enjoyed entertaining longtime friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Johnnie D. Koromilas; a son, Alec James Koromilas of Washington, D.C., and Dover; a daughter, Angelynne K. Hinson, a son-in-law, Edward K. Hinson, and a granddaughter, Caroline J. Hinson, all of Portsmouth; a sister, Mary S. Koromilas of Dover; brothers Peter S. Koromilas of Washington, D.C., and Anthony S. Koromilas of Titusville Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

KOROMILAS - James Koromilas, 77, of Dover, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., in Dover. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 93 Locust St., Dover, with the Rev. Constantine Newman, pastor, and the Rev. Arthur Athans, retired pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the Annunciation Cemetery in Dover. Memorials in his name may be made to either the Greek Orthodox Church, 93 Locust St., Dover, NH 03820, or to Dover Fire & Rescue, Central Fire Station, Broadway, Dover, NH 03820.

Raymond C. Philbrook

KITTERY POINT - Raymond C. Philbrook, 88, of 199 Brave Boat Harbor Road, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at his home where he resided his entire life.

Born May 7, 1913, in Kittery Point, he was the son of Clarence C. and Ethel (Grant) Philbrook. He graduated from York High School in 1931 and was the co-valedictorian of his class.

He worked as a pipe fitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1940 to 1946. For forty years he was a private caretaker and gardener for many local estates.

Mr. Philbrook was predeceased by his sister, Viola Philbrook who died in 1992.

He is survived by his cousin, Nancy Jackson of Uxbridge, Mass.

PHILBROOK - Raymond C. Philbrook, 88, of 199 Brave Boat Harbor Road, Kittery Point, died Sept. 28, 2001, at his residence. A Memorial Service will be held at noon, Oct. 6, at his residence on Brave Boat Harbor Road in Kittery Point. Interment will be private. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

PHILBRICK - Walter B. Philbrick, 66, of Groton, Conn., died Sept. 30, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Groton Heights Baptist Church, 72 Broad St., Groton. Interment will be held with military honors. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Donations in his memory may be directed to the charity of the donors choice.

Ethel M. Byron

YORK and NEWPORT, Maine - Ethel M. Byron, 96, died Sept. 27, 2001, at York Hospital. She was born Aug. 12, 1905, at Black River Bridge, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of John and Agnes MacDonald.

She had owned and operated the Oxbow Cabins for eight years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield and the New Era Auxiliary at the church. She also belonged to Newport Senior Citizens and the H.G. Libby Women's Relief Corps in Newport.

She moved to Kittery in 1996 to be near her daughter, and later moved to Sentry Hill in York. She had most recently attended the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth.

She was predeceased by her three husbands, Howard Sheldon, Orville Sawyer, and Stearle Byron; a grandson, Richard Lovering Jr.; a son-in-law, Richard Lovering Sr.; sisters Mabel MacColl, Ruth Williston, Ruby MacDonald, and Myra MacDonald; brothers Duncan MacDonald and Burton MacDonald.

She is survived by two sons, Leon and his wife, Betty, Sheldon of Millbrae, Calif., and John and his wife, Janice, Sheldon of Palmyra; a daughter, Elizabeth Lovering of York; a stepson, Eugene Byron of Linneus; one stepdaughter, Madeline Davis of Wrentham, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Shirley Haars of Mirimachi, New Brunswick, Canada; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She will also be fondly remembered by Debra Driscoll and John Perry.

BYRON - Ethel M. Byron, 96, of York and Newport, Maine, died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., in Newport, with the Rev. Gerald Scott and the Rev. Russell Carle officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, also at the funeral home. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Brooks Memorial Park, in Eliot. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Granville W. Curtis

GLEN - Granville W. "Curt" Curtis, 73, of Jericho Road, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Salisbury, Conn., on Jan. 23, 1928, he was a son of the late Granville W. and Zille (Eldridge) Curtis.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, serving as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and Asia from 1945 to 1949. As a member of the reserves for 10 years, he was recalled for active duty in October of 1950 through July of 1952 during the Korean conflict in Antrac Crewman. He also served as a drill instructor for 2nd Lt. P.L.C., Marine Corps School, in Quantico, Va.

He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 921 in Portsmouth until it merged into Local 1966, and worked for 22 years as a carpenter millwright, cabinet maker, retiring in 1985 due to a disability.

He later worked as a field supervisor for the Rockingham County Community Action Program, helping out in its winterization program and was the first New Hampshire state-certified energy auditor. In his earlier years, he was employed as a guard at the Portsmouth Naval Prison.

He was a longtime resident of Hampton Falls, moving to Glen in 1990.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, VFW Post 8810 and the American Legion Post 0043 and served on the board of directors of the Self-Help Housing Program. He also enjoyed repairing and refinishing antique furniture.

He was the husband of Ethel L. (Magrath) Curtis for 42 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include three sons, Bryan L. Curtis and his wife, Ruth, of Glen, Bruce Curtis and his wife, Donna, of Newmarket, and Granville W. Curtis Jr. and his wife, Tracy, of Dover; one daughter, Irene Curtis of Dover; one stepdaughter, Donna J. Parsons of Simi Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilbur Curtis of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Frank Curtis of Red Hook, N.Y., and Elliot Curtis of Millbrook, N.Y.; two sisters, Frances Curtis, Germantown, N.Y., and Shirley Cardinal of Copake, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

CURTIS - Granville W. "Curt" Curtis, 73, of Glen, formerly of Hampton Falls, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

William D. LaGrange

GREENLAND - William D. "Red" LaGrange, 67, of Greenland, formerly of Salem, N.H., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.

He was born and educated in Lawrence, Mass., and was a graduate of Lawrence High School in the Class of 1951.

He served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 4, of Boston, Mass.

Family members include his son, William D. LaGrange Jr., of Salem, N.H.; daughters Donna M. Smith of Pelham, N.H., and Gail McLean of Lawrence, Mass.; sisters Barbara M. Sullivan of North Andover, Mass. and Ann F. Thibault of Greenland, formerly of Haverhill, Mass.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LaGRANGE - William D. "Red" LaGrange, 67, of Greenland, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in St. Mary's Church in Lawrence, Mass. Burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, in Lawrence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 122 Amesbury St., Lawrence, Mass.
