William Gum

PORTSMOUTH - William "Ben" Gum, 72, of 20 Edgewood Road, died suddenly on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at his home.

Born in Hillsboro, Ill., on April 22, 1929, he was the son of Joseph and Naomi McNulty. He had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 35 years.

He served in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring as a senior chief petty officer. After retiring, he returned to school to earn a college degree. He enjoyed fishing and gardening in his retirement.

He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine "Peggy" (Greeley) Gum, who died in 2000, and a daughter, Sara Gum, who died in 1980.

Survivors include his daughter Diane Gum of Dover; his son, William Gum Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Portsmouth; a grandson, Christian Gum, of Portsmouth; two sisters, Clara Osborne and Mary Grant of Springfield, Ill.; in-laws Diane and Edward McAskill of Kingston, Pat Storer of Kittery, Maine, and Denise Cloutier and Don Spaulding, both of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

GUM - William "Ben" Gum, 72, of 20 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, died on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Calvary Cemetery. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of N.H., 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Dr. John J. Monahan

NORTH HAMPTON - Dr. John J. Monahan, 70, a renowned orthopedic surgeon and emeritus professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, of congestive heart failure at his home in North Hampton.

Born in Erie, Pa., to Walter T. and Nellie Monahan, he attended Cathedral Prep in Erie, where he was an all-city fullback on the school's football team. He earned his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and M.D. in 1958 from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N.H., and surgical residencies at Hitchcock, Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts General and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

He was chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa.; medical director of McKean County Crippled Children Society, Bradford, Pa.; and chief of surgery at the Erie unit of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. During this time, he retired a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves.

Beginning in 1977, he held various clinical and academic positions at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., including director of sports medicine, assistant director of the trauma center, professor of the Physiology Graduate School and full professor of orthopedics. Beyond being the recipient of many teaching awards, he was also author, co-author or editor of numerous academic studies and articles.

A devoted father and husband, he leaves his wife, Judith R. (Chabot) and seven children: Kathleen, Ann, Susan, John, Michael, Robert and Brien. He also leaves a sister, Ann Jane of Buffalo, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester. Burial will be in St. Catherine's cemetery in Westford, Mass.

Michael J. Rossetti

HAMPTON FALLS - Michael J. Rossetti, 49, of 6 Mill Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Born Oct. 6, 1951, in Haverhill, Mass., he was the son of the late Gerald J. and Lillian M. (Heroux) Rossetti.

He was raised in Haverhill and was a graduate of Lawrence Catholic High School. He lived in Haverhill for several years, moving to Hampton Falls in 1985. He was a carpenter for many years and was self-employed.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed music, especially the Grateful Dead.

Family members include his wife of 16 years, Deborah A. Benn of Hampton Falls; two sisters, Janet M. Cunningham of Lee, and Theresa A. Soellner and her husband, John, of Haverhill, Mass.; two nephews, John Soellner and Michael Soellner, both of Haverhill; two aunts; two great-aunts; and several cousins.

ROSSETTI - Michael J. Rossetti, 49, of 6 Mill Lane, Hampton Falls, died Sept. 30, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Saturday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Friday, 6-8 p.m. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Burial will be private.

Dr. Margaret Ann Savastano

GREENLAND - Dr. Margaret Ann Savastano, of Greenland, died of cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001.

She was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., July 7, 1954. She graduated from Rye Neck High School, Mamaroneck, N.Y. in 1972, and moved to New Hampshire. In 1976, she graduated from New England College in Henniker, N.H. with a bachelor's degree in biology. She received a master of science degree in teaching, with a major in environmental studies, from Antioch College in 1978. She taught Earth science at the Rundlett Junior High School in Concord.

In 1988, while still teaching, she received a degree from the N.H. Institute for Therapeutic Arts and became a licensed massage therapist. In 1991, she left her teaching position to study chiropractic at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. She graduated in 1994 and began a practice at the New England Center for Holistic Healthcare, where she practiced until the present.

Margaret also studied and taught yoga, and wrote health-related articles for the monthly publication "Our Times."

She thoroughly enjoyed hiking in the mountains, long-distance biking, cross-country skiing, practicing yoga and world travel.

She leaves her companion of 14 years and fiancé, Fred E. Legasse Jr.; her parents, James and Joan Savastano of Mamaroneck, N.Y.; sisters, Mary P. Davidson of Larchmont, N.Y., Jill E. Lanza of Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Joan A McGuire of Ann Arbor, Mich.; brother, James Savastano of Mamaroneck, N.Y.; nieces, Erin, Jacquilin and Kelsey; and nephews, Michael, James and Brian, all of whom love her very much and will miss her always.

SAVASTANO - Dr. Margaret Ann Savastano, of Greenland, died on Oct. 2, 2001. Visitation will be held at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. A memorial service at the funeral home will follow immediately after at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Lucille D'Alessandro

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Lucille D'Alessandro, 75, a former longtime resident of 162 Orchard St. in Portsmouth, N.H., died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Rockledge.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of Rockledge; three children, Judyth of Seattle, Wash., Nicholas of Cocoa, Fla., and Michele of Seabrook, N.H.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Atlantic Mortuary of Rockledge.

Robert L. Hill

PORTSMOUTH - Robert Lance Hill, 58, of 618 Dennett St., died Sept. 25, 2001.

Born Jan. 11, 1943, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Shirley Hill Bridges and the late Alfred Lance Hill.

He was a graduate of St. Patrick's School in Portsmouth, Portsmouth High School, the University of New Hampshire, with a BS in Chemistry in 1965, University of California, Berkeley, with an MS in Political Science in 1970.

In addition to his mother, family members include a brother, Paul Hill of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Gail Marino and her husband, Louis S. Marino, of Nashua; three nephews, Christopher, Jonathan and Michelle Marino, and David Marino.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Barbara A. Karp

HOLDERNESS, N.H. - Barbara A. Karp, 42, of College Road North, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Speare Memorial Hospital, Plymouth, after a long period of failing health.

She was born in Methuen, Mass., the daughter of Earl and Theresa (Endyke) Sidney, and attended schools in Salem, N.H.

She graduated from Merrimack College in 1981 and Northern Essex Community College in 1985. She was president of her nursing class.

She had been employed by Holy Family Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and recently at Speare Memorial Hospital. During her nursing career, she made a positive impact and earned the respect of everyone she was in contact with.

She was a member of the Lakes Region Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She was most recently involved in the New Hampshire Chapter of Families with Children From China and other adoption groups.

She was a lovely wife and devoted mother of two young girls. One who loved to share her creative talents with others and spending time with family and friends.

The family includes her husband Gary and daughters Riley and Hannah of Holderness; her mother from Salem; her father from New Bern, N.C.; two sisters, Carole of Manchester and Linda of Merrimac, Mass.; a brother, Robert of Salem; numerous nephews and a niece.

KARP - Barbara A. Karp, 42, of College Road North, Plymouth, died on Oct. 1, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Plymouth Congregational Church on the Common, Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cure For Lymphoma Foundation, 215 Lexington Ave. 11th floor, New York, NY 10016. Mayhew Funeral Home in Plymouth is in charge of the arrangements.

C. Frank Barnes

HAMPTON - C. Frank Barnes, 87, of 87 Winnacunnet Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Peoria, Ill., Dec. 30, 1914, the son of the late Francis and Amelia (Webber) Barnes.

He was raised in and attended Peoria schools, and graduated from St. George High School in Evanston, Ill., with the Class of 1933. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He worked as an engineer for the Department of Public Works in Quincy, Mass., at the sewage treatment plant, retiring in 1972. He was also employed by the Quincy Naval Shipyard and as a sales representative for electrical appliances.

He moved to Hampton in 1992, coming from Derry, and was a longtime resident of Quincy, Mass. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

He was the husband of Alice Scott Barnes for 18 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Robert Barnes and his wife Pam of Attleboro, Mass.; a daughter, Bernadette Boddy and her husband, Leonard II of Seabrook Beach; five grandchildren; and cousins.

BARNES - C. Frank Barnes, 87, of 87 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, died Oct. 3, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Friday at 12 noon. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Friday from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Dr. Margaret A. Savastano

GREENLAND - Dr. Margaret Ann Savastano, of Greenland, died of cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001.

She was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., July 7, 1954. She graduated from Rye Neck High School, Mamaroneck, N.Y. in 1972, and moved to New Hampshire. Roland A. Soucy

HAMPTON - The funeral for Roland A. Soucy, 89, of Hampton, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Members of the Holy Name Society were the altar servers. Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C., offered the readings.

Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Ham. The U.S. flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Soucy's daughter, Pauline Beausoliel.

Pallbearers were Mark Soucy, Daniel Soucy, Robert Soucy, Armand Soucy, Gerald Soucy and Marlon R. Kitchin.

American Legion services were conducted at the funeral home Monday evening by Hampton American Legion Post 35 under the direction of Joseph Kutt, commander, and John Holman, chaplain.

PHILBROOK - Raymond C. Philbrook, of Brave Boat Harbor Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died Sept. 28, 2001. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 6, at his residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the York Public Library, 172 York St., York, ME 03909; or the Rice Public Library, 8 Wentworth St., Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Bertha M. Pizzano

CHELSEA, Mass. - Bertha M. (Bourinot) Pizzano, of Chelsea, died on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, after a long illness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore F. Pizzano; and sisters, Ernestine McCafferty of Watertown, and Rita Hede of Kingston, N.H.

Survivors include her son, Richard C. and his wife Grace of Woburn and Rye, N.H.; granddaughter Heidi Cady and her husband Michael of North Reading and Rye, N.H.; great-grandsons Daniel, 8, and Jeffrey, 10; and her sister-in-law Yvette (Dion) Pizzano of Revere.

She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered.

In lieu of flowers, because of Bertha's lifelong compassion for and love of animals, please make donations in her memory to the Merrimack Feline Rescue Society, 91 Bridge Road (Route 1) Salisbury, MA 01950; or the New England Home for Little Wanderers.

Diane M. Hubbard

PORTSMOUTH - Diane M. (Robert) Hubbard, 51, of 600 Kearsarge Way, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Tilton on Feb. 6, 1950, the daughter of Cecile Robert and the late Armand Robert.

Diane was a graduate of Tilton High School and attended the Wilford Academy in Boston.

She was employed as a floral designer for Michael's Arts and Crafts and was a certified nurse's aide, working for several agencies in the local area.

She had great artistic ability, enjoyed painting and loved nature.

Besides her mother, Cecile Robert of Tilton, survivors include three sons, Owen P. Robert of South Berwick, Maine, Anthony M. Hubbard and Andrew J. Hubbard, both of Portsmouth; and a sister, Denise Zajac of Connecticut.

HUBBARD - Diane M. (Robert) Hubbard, 51, of 600 Kearsarge Way, Portsmouth, died Oct. 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Please omit flowers. Donations in memory of Diane may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 66 Hanover St., Suite 101, Manchester, NH 03101. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.
