Daniel E. Rosholt

DOVER - Daniel E. Rosholt, 44, of 30 Maple St., died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital following a brief illness.

Born June 14, 1957, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Edward J. Rosholt and the late Florence (Menard) Rosholt.

He was a graduate of Oyster River High School, Class of 1976, and attended the University of New Hampshire for one semester. While in high school he was very involved in soccer.

He served a five-year enlistment in the U.S. Navy.

Dan was a master electrician, licensed in the states of New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. He was self-employed after working for several years at Modini Electric of Manchester.

He enjoyed fishing, lobstering, skiing and hiking.

Family members include his father and stepmother, Edward J. and Martha (Flechtner) Rosholt of Durham; three brothers, Michael P. Rosholt of Dover, Mark J. Rosholt of Massillon, Ohio, and Kevin M. Rosholt of Berwick, Maine; four sisters, Theresa A. Bianchi of Manchester, Catherine L. Kling of Manassas, Va., Christina L. Waterman of Somersworth, and Jennifer L. Salmon of Albany, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his mother, Florence M. Rosholt, in 1972.

ROSHOLT - Daniel E. Rosholt of Maple Avenue, Dover, died Oct. 4, 2001. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Hope Community Church, 197 Sixth St., Dover, with the Rev. Steve Spearing, pastor, and the Rev. Lynn Opderbecke, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Franklin Cemetery, Franklin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Colon Cancer Alliance, 175 9th Ave., New York, NY 10011; or more information may be obtained at www.ccalliance.org. Ralph E. Spinney

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Ralph Ellsworth Spinney, 76, of The Mainlands Unit 1, Pinellas Park, died on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Bayfront Trauma Center in St. Petersburg as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born May 16, 1925, in Kittery, Maine, the son of Ralph N. and Ruth G. Spinney. He graduated from Traip Academy in Kittery, Class of 1942, and served in the Navy during World War II. He was retired from The Bendix Corp.

He was a member of Masonic Lodges in Kittery and Saco, Maine; and Natick, Mass. He was also a member of Egypt Shrine Temple in Tampa, and the Unit 1 Men's Club in Mainlands. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London, N.H.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Whitman Spinney; daughter, Carol Rivers and husband Dana of Sterling Heights, Mich.; son, David Spinney and wife Debi of Coral Springs; stepdaughter, Susan Roos and husband Peter of New London, N.H.; two grandchildren, Kari Rivers and Matthew Spinney; and two stepgrandchildren, Christopher and Peter Roos.

A memorial service will be held in New London, N.H., at the convenience of the family.

Phyllis A. Strout

HAMPTON - Phyllis A. Strout, 69, of 15 Anns Lane, died, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center.

She was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of the late Ernest B. and Thelma (Marsters) Rich.

Mrs. Stout was raised in Haverhill, Mass., and attended schools there. She lived most of her life in Hampton and was a member of the First Congregational Church, Hampton. She was a member of the Merry Mixers Bowling League of Portsmouth, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, sewing, plants and reading.

She was the wife of Irving K. Strout for 47 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Steven L. Strout of Hampton; one daughter, Karen A. Smalley of Barrington; three grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Rich of Haverhill, Mass., and Kendall Rich of Amesbury, Mass.; two sisters, Brenda Teague of Salem, N.H., and Beverly Murphy of Sanford, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

STROUT - Phyllis A. Strout of 15 Anns Lane, Hampton, died Oct. 4, 2001. Services will be held at the Center Cemetery, North Hampton, Saturday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885; or the Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301-4059. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Bessie Greenfield

PORTSMOUTH - Bessie (Cohen) Greenfield, 100, the widow of Samuel Greenfield, of 928 South St., passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born in Greenland, Feb. 3, 1901, she was the daughter of Philip and Rose (Ohtowski) Cohen and attended Portsmouth schools.

She was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for Dinnerman's Market of Portsmouth.

She was a member of Temple Israel, a life member of Hadassah, and a former member of the Sisterhood of the Temple.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Weinbaum and her husband, William, of Peabody, Mass., and Marilyn Supovitz and her husband, Irving, of Bridgewater, N.J.; one son, Bradley Greenfield of Miami Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

GREENFIELD - Bessie (Cohen) Greenfield, 100, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, N.H., died Oct. 5, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, Temple Israel Cemetery, Banfield Road, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Israel, 260 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Eleanor L. Syphers Hodgdon

PORTSMOUTH - Eleanor L. (McNabb) Syphers Hodgdon, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of 340 Lafayette Road, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Portsmouth Sept. 21, 1911, she was the daughter of Albert G. and Mary A. (Kellenbeck) McNabb.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and the Women's Circle of the Church. She volunteered in church activities including putting on turkey suppers and the Christmas bazaar. She was best-known for her apple pies.

She was a member of Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star, in Portsmouth and a member of AARP. She loved craft fairs, yard sales, and game shows. She loved birds, had a green thumb for African violets, and was proud to be a Puddle Docker.

Her devotion to her family was well-known; while each child was unique, they all inherited her strength, courage and composition.

Survivors include her six children, Robert Syphers and his wife, Emily, of Burbank, Calif., Roger Syphers and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hampton, Zoe Ann Moulton and her husband, Leslie, of Wells, Maine, Richard Syphers and his wife, Bonnie, of Litchfield, N.H., Priscilla Zoffoli and her husband, Richard, of Rye, and Bruce Syphers and his wife, Wanda, of Greenland; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her beloved son, John Christopher, in 1978 and her first husband, Theophilous "Bud" Syphers, in 1979, and her husband, Ernest Hodgdon, in 1985.

HODGDON - Eleanor L. (McNabb) Syphers Hodgdon, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, N.H., died Oct. 4, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, at the First United Methodist Church, 129 Miller Ave., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Order of Eastern Star services by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 at 3:45 p.m., Sunday. Family flowers only. Maria Christina

PORTSMOUTH - Maria Christina (van der Werff) Pirie, died Oct. 4, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 11, 1964, in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of Dr. Jacob van der Werff and Anne (Gilmartin) van der Werff. Educated in Hartford public schools and Loomis-Chaffee, she was a 1987 graduate of the University of Connecticut.

She was employed for the last 12 years as the environmental education coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency in Boston. She surrounded herself with a wide circle of neighbors, friends and colleagues, who will miss her consummate professional abilities and her personal warmth and inclusiveness.

She is survived by her loving husband, J. Christopher Pirie; her beloved twin sons, Ethan and Graham of Portsmouth; her parents, of Portsmouth; brothers, Andreas of Ocean City, Md.; Jan Peter of Tolland, Conn. and his wife, Susan; Nicholas of New London, N.H. and his wife, Brenda; and many nieces and nephews. Other survivors include her husband's parents, the Rev. and Mrs. James G. Pirie of Durham; their daughters, Lisabeth Hudson and Sandra Pirie-St. Amour of Massachusetts.

William F. Thibault

SALEM, N.H. - William F. Thibault, 41, of Salem, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Holy Family Hospital, Methuen, Mass.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., where he grew up and attended school. He was a graduate of Whittier Regional High School, and was enlisted in the Delayed Enlistment Program and entered the Army upon graduation in June 1977. He served as a SP-4 in Germany and was honorably discharged.

He then graduated Summa Cum Laude from Salem State College with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a production planning and control manager for Textron Defense Systems in Wilmington, Mass., where he worked for 16 years. He was certified in APICS and MRP/Production Inventory Management.

He was devoted to his wife and family, and attended all practices and games of the Salem Rams football. He was a NASCAR enthusiast, and a gardener. He was also a life member of the Amvets Post 147 in Haverhill, Mass.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. "Betsy" (Albis) Thibault of Salem; one son, Derek B. Thibault of Salem; one daughter, Cayla A. Thibault of Salem; his parents, Bernard E. and Ann F. (LaGrange) Thibault of Greenland, formerly of Haverhill, Mass.; three brothers, his twin, James M. Thibault of Bradford, Mass., and Bernard J. Thibault and John R. Thibault, both of Haverhill; two sisters, Ann Marie Brooks of Haverhill, and Carol J. Plourde of Boynton Beach, Fla.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Deacon Leonard and Betty Albis of Salem; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

THIBAULT - William F. Thibault, 41, of Salem, N.H., died Oct. 3, 2001. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Salem. Burial will be at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem. Calling hours will be held from 4-8 p.m., Monday at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to the Derek B. and Cayla A. Thibault Scholarship Fund, c/o Salem Cooperative Bank, 3 South Broadway, Salem, NH 03079.

C. Frank Barnes

HAMPTON - The funeral for C. Frank Barnes, 87, of Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Jean Goss was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Ham. The U.S. flag was presented to his widow, Alice (Scott) Barnes.

Granville W. Curtis

HAMPTON - The funeral for Granville W. "Curt" Curtis, 73, of Glen, formerly of Hampton Falls, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. William R. Stockhaus, pastor of the Glen Community Baptist Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist.

The eulogy was offered by Wayne Elliot and words of remembrance were offered by family and friends. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Stockhaus, and full military honors were accorded. The firing detail was provided by the N.H. National Guard and taps was sounded.

The U.S. flag draping the casket was folded by personnel from the Marine Corps and presented to his widow, Mrs. Ethel L. (Magrath) Curtis.

Pallbearers were Al Eaton, Rick Merrill, Rick Pierson, Thomas McLaren, Tim Campbell and John Phillipe. American Legion services were conducted at the funeral home Wednesday evening by Hampton American Legion Post 35, under the direction of Joseph Kutt, commander, and John M. Holman, chaplain.

Ethel M. Emery

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Ethel May Emery, 18, of 11 Spring Lane, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Eliot, as a result of a traffic accident.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on Sept. 13, 1983, she was the daughter of Richard and Pamela (Bridgeo) Emery.

She grew up in Eliot, attending Eliot elementary school. She was a former member of the Odyssey of the Mind team, the Eliot Girl Scouts, and the Marshwood Junior High School Chorus. She attended Noble High School.

She will be remembered as the youngest of four children, always looking up to her siblings and trying to imitate them. She loved poetry and watching television. She was full of energy, and known to walk long distances, even in the rain, to visit friends.

She was employed at the Grant House in South Berwick.

She is survived by her mother, Pamela Emery of North Hampton, N.H.; her father, Richard Emery of South Berwick; her sisters, Judy Anweiler of Houston, Texas and Addrienne L. Emery of South Berwick; her brother, Allan Emery of South Berwick; and her nieces and a nephew, whom she adored, Morganne and Marissa Emery of South Berwick, and Steven Anweiler of Houston, Texas; and several aunts and uncles.

EMERY - Ethel May Emery, 18, of 11 Spring Lane, South Berwick, Maine, died Oct. 4, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, from the First Congregational Church of Eliot, State Road. Friends and family may call on from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/US Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine.

HUBBARD - Diane M. (Robert) Hubbard, 51, of 600 Kearsarge Way, Portsmouth, N.H., died Oct. 2, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, at Four Tree Island, Peirce Island, Portsmouth. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, 66 Hanover St., Suite 101, Manchester, NH 03101. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

PIRIE - Maria Christina (van der Werff) Pirie, died Oct. 4, 2001. There will be a memorial service and celebration of her joyful, abundant life at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 292 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Friends are requested to omit flowers. Donations in her name may be sent to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 1309 Beacon St., 3rd Floor, Brookline, MA 02446. Phyllis A. Strout

HAMPTON - The funeral for Phyllis A. Strout of 15 Anns Lane was held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Service were held at the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The Rev. Deborah B. Knowlton, pastor of First Congregational Church, Hampton, officiated. Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C. and Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C., both of Our Lady of the Miraculous Church, Hampton, read the 23rd Psalm.

Michael J. Rossetti

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Michael J. Rossetti, 49, of 6 Mill Lane was held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. John MacKenzie, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Jean Goss was the organist and Patrice Chaisson was the soloist. Members of the Holy Name Society were alter servers. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

David F. Mahoney

NORTH HAMPTON - David F. Mahoney, 76, of 9A Atlantic Avenue, Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. After a brief battle with cancer, he died peacefully with his family at his side.

He was born on July 7, 1925 in Lowell, MA, the son of the late David J. and Beatrice (McCann) Mahoney.

Mr. Mahoney graduated from Lowell High School in 1944. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was the president of Granite State Minerals of Portsmouth, an importing firm he founded more than 40 years ago. Mr. Mahoney was very active in the Propeller Club, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Emerson Hovey V.F.W. Post #168 of Portsmouth. He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach.

Mr. Mahoney resided in North Hampton for 40 years, hailing from Lowell, MA.

He was the husband of Jaqueline Mahoney for 42 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, David F. Mahoney Jr. and Sean Mahoney, both of Portsmouth; two daughters, Colleen Mahoney of Delaware and Kathleen Mahoney of San Francisco, CA; three grandchildren, two brothers, Leo D. Mahoney and Daniel F. Mahoney, both of Lowell, MA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Erin Mahoney and a brother, Joseph S. Mahoney.

MAHONEY - David F. Mahoney, 76, of 9A Atlantic Avenue, North Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Private burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, North Tewksbury, MA. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.
