Joseph L. Desautel

DOVER - Joseph L. "Jake" Desautel, 85, formerly of 3 Earl Street, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home.

Born in Dover on Oct. 3, 1916, he was the son of George and Margaret (McArdel) Desautel.

He attended Dover schools and served in the Merchant Marines.

He was a lifelong resident of Dover and was a retired car salesman from Midway Buick.

Mr. Desautel was a member of the Dover Loyal Order of the Moose and the Benevolent and Protective Lodge of Elks. In his younger days, he was a member of Ringside 38 of Dover.

Family members include two daughters, Donna L. Smith of York, Maine and Dorothy M. Olson of South Berwick, Maine; two sisters, Celia Harvey of Dover and Margaret McMahon of West Palm Beach, FL; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Lorraine (Grenier) Desautel on Oct. 27, 1998.

DESAUTEL - Joseph L. "Jake" Desautel, formerly of 3 Earl Street, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick, Maine. Jeremiah R. Pomerleau

KITTERY, Maine - Jeremiah Robert Pomerleau, 21, of 8 Maple Ave., Kittery, died Friday as a result of a traffic crash in Eliot.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on Jan. 19, 1980, he was a son of Robert and Katherine (Coy) Pomerleau.

A lifelong resident of the Seacoast, he attended schools in South Berwick, Maine, graduating from Marshwood High School in 1999. Jeremiah enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting and four-wheeling. He enjoyed playing his guitar and hanging out with his friends. One of his favorite pastimes was tinkering with cars, a hobby he made into his career as a mechanic for Tri-City Dodge in Somersworth, N.H. where he enjoyed his job and the people he worked with.

A favorite quote written by Jeremiah that will bring comfort to his family in the time to come is: "When you look into the sky at night and see a star there really are two." This quote really spoke to his depth and enjoyment of writing.

He is survived by his mother Katherine Pomerleau of Portsmouth, N.H., his father Robert Pomerleau of Rochester, N.H., a brother Jacob Pomerleau of Kittery, his grandparents Shirley and Darwin Lien and William and Katherine Pomerleau, all of Kittery, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

POMERLEAU - Jeremiah R. Pomerleau, 21, of 8 Maple Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 5, 2001 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital as a result of a traffic crash in Eliot, Maine. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2001 from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Arrangements are by the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Lorena Maude Lizak

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Lorena Maude Lizak, 81, died peacefully on Saturday evening, Oct. 6, 2001, at home, with her family and friends by her side, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born June 11, 1920, in Hampton, N.H., the daughter of Lance Leroy and Vera M. (Cilley) Frye. She had been a lifelong resident of Newmarket, N.H., until moving to Burlington in July of 2000. She married Walter J. Lizak, who predeceased her in 1991.

She leaves three children and their spouses, Dorothy and Hillard Davis of Kannopolis, N.C., Eleanor and Kenneth Grant of Stratham, N.H., and Walter and Jean Lizak of Newmarket, N.H.; her grandchildren, Michael Davis, Vicki Foronda, Gary Grant, Jeff and Jim Davis, Donna and Michael Grant, and Kim and Melody Lizak; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers, Valerie Cote, Charles Wagner and Thomas Crossman, who also became her close friends. They would also like to thank the V.N.A. and Hospice.

LIZAK - Lorena Maude Lizak, 81, of Burlington, Vt., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. The family will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Lorena's home, 59 Murray St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the V.N.A. and Hospice, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446. Arrangements are by Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Home, 97 Elmwood Ave., Burlington.

Vard F. Hunker

ELIOT, Maine - Vard F. Hunker, formerly of Eliot, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Alternative Home in Kittery. His family and friends will always remember him as a loving and religious gentleman with a warm smile for everyone.

Born in Moline, Ill., on June 17, 1913, he was a son of the late Don O. and Minnie (Gist) Hunker.

He attended school in Rock Island, Ill. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1932, making riprap for the U.S. Army before returning home to graduate from Rock Island High School in 1934.

In 1936 he joined the Naval Reserve. In 1940, one week before his reserve enlistment was up, he was ordered to active duty. Then, in December 1941, one week before his active duty enlistment was up, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He served in the Navy during the war, stationed on ships patrolling the West Coast from San Diego to Alaska.

He married Edna (Johnson) Rogers on Sept. 10, 1942, in San Diego. They returned to Illinois after the war, where he worked as a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad. They moved to California a year later and he worked at Terminal Island Naval Shipyard in Long Beach, Calif. He transferred to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1959, and the family settled in Eliot. He retired in 1972.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eliot and was an active member of the Eliot Senior Citizens, the Eliot Lions Club and the American Legion Post 188. He and his wife were charter members and 20-year board of directors members and volunteers of the York County and Eliot Meals On Wheels program. He was in the Naval Reserve from 1956 to 1972.

He was presented the Fabyan Drake award in Eliot in 1981, and he and his wife were selected grand marshals of the 1996 Eliot Memorial Day Parade.

His wife predeceased him in 1997, and a brother, Donald Hunker, died in 1971.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Beverly Rogers of Berwick; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannie and John Blake of York, and Judy and Cone Leavitt of Eliot; six grandchildren, David Gerry, David Heilig, Douglas Gerry, Joseph Rogers, Marjorie Rogers, and Kibbie Leavitt. He is also survived by his twin brother, Virgil Hunker of Spokane, Wash.; a sister and her husband, Maxine and Karl Dickhoff of Seattle, Wash.; three step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

HUNKER - Vard F. Hunker, formerly of Eliot, Maine, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Alternative Home in Kittery, Maine. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, from the First Congregational Church of Eliot on State Road. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to York VNA, 42 Brickyard Ct., York, ME 03909, or to First Congregational Church of Eliot, State Road, Eliot, ME 03903.

David F. Mahoney

NORTH HAMPTON - David F. Mahoney, 76, of 9A Atlantic Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. After a brief battle with cancer, he died peacefully with his family at his side.

He was born on July 7, 1925, in Lowell, Mass., a son of the late David J. and Beatrice (McCann) Mahoney, and graduated from Lowell High School in 1944. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy.

He was the president of Granite State Minerals, an importing firm he founded more than 40 years ago. He was very active in the Propeller Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the Navy League, the Big Brother/Big Sister organization and the Emerson Hovey V.F.W. Post 168 of Portsmouth. He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach.

He had resided in North Hampton for 40 years and was the husband of Jaqueline (Reynolds) Mahoney for 42 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, David F. Mahoney Jr. and Sean Mahoney, both of Portsmouth; two daughters, Colleen Mahoney of Delaware and Kathleen Mahoney of San Francisco, Calif.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Leo D. Mahoney and Daniel F. Mahoney, both of Lowell, Mass; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Erin Mahoney, and one brother, Joseph S. Mahoney.

MAHONEY - David F. Mahoney, 76, of 9A Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 201. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Private burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, North Tewksbury, Mass. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Daniel Webster Council, 572 Holt Ave., Manchester, NH 03101, or to Brigham and Women's Hospital: Epidemiology of Rheumatic Disease, c/o Dr. Matthew Liang, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.

Bertha H. Quint

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Bertha H. Lawson Quint died at her home on Oct. 6, 2001, after a courageous battle with renal disease.

Born in Kittery, and raised in Eliot, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Bertha (Kelly) Lawson. She was the wife of the late Harland James Quint, who died in 1977.

She was a graduate of Eliot High School. During World War II, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She had been employed at the General Electric plant in Somersworth and was one of the very first employees to be hired there. At the time of her retirement in 1983, she was the longest-serving employee of the plant and received many honors. Since retirement she has attended nearly all of the retiree reunions.

She enjoyed summering at the camp she and her husband, "Unc," owned, which was named "Glad-2-c-u" and was located on Mousam Lake. She was an avid crafter and shopper and was very devoted to her family. She was known for never forgetting a birthday, anniversary, school graduation or family party.

She is survived by her sister, Irva Hinds of Eliot, and by a very large and loving family of her stepdaughter, and also nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Bertha (Kelly) Lawson, and by a brother, Charles Lawson.

QUINT - Bertha H. Lawson Quint, of South Berwick, Maine, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Family and friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Eliot United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Messer and Father John Clifton officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorials in her name to the South Berwick Emergency Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 157, South Berwick, ME 03908, or to the Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice, 125 Aviation Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

LIVINGSTONE - Valerie Kay Livingstone, 48, of Butterfield Lane, Stratham, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Private services will be held on Wednesday at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Maple Lane Cemetery in Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., Breast Cancer Research, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, (800) ACS-2345.

Robert Lance Hill

PORTSMOUTH - Robert Lance Hill, 58, of 618 Dennett St., died Sept. 25, 2001.

Born Jan. 11, 1943, in Portsmouth, he was a son of Shirley (Bridges) Hill and the late Alfred Lance Hill.

He was a graduate of St. Patrick's School in Portsmouth; Portsmouth High School; the University of New Hampshire in 1965, with a B.S. in chemistry; and the University of California, Berkeley, in 1970, with an M.S. in political science.

In addition to his mother, family members include a brother, Paul Hill of Cleveland, Ohio; sister Gail Marino and her husband, Louis S. Marino, of Nashua; three nephews, Christopher, Jonathan and Daniel Marino; and niece Michelle Marino

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Marguerite Michaud

KITTERY, Maine - Marguerite (Dugan) Michaud, 67, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Camden, N.J., a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Ann (Hern) Dugan. She attended local schools in the Camden, N.J., area.

She was married in 1958 to Albert Michaud, and they moved to his hometown of Kittery, where they had been living for 43 years.

She was a devoted housewife and an excellent homemaker, who took pride in her home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Catherine McCarson and Theresa Herbert, both of Glouster, N.J.

She will be deeply missed by her many friends throughout the area.

MICHAUD - Marguerite Michaud, 67, of Kittery, Maine, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, in Kittery. Visitation hours will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor, St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Kittery, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dover. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Charles O. Best

PORTSMOUTH - Charles O. Best, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Jan. 18, 1919, in Lowell, Mass., the son of the late Joseph and Jenny (Fortune) Best. He attended local schools and later attended trade schools. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served his country proudly in World War II in the Pacific Theater of operations. Upon his discharge, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist. In his leisure time he enjoyed working on old cars and boats. He loved bicycle riding and watching television. He also looked forward to spending time at his camp in Maine.

He is survived by a sister, Helen Eldridge, of Portsmouth; his beloved nephew, Charles Eldridge and his wife, Debbie, of Tigard, Ore.; and his great-nephew, Robert Eldridge, also of Oregon.

BEST - Charles Best, 82, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Visitation hours will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Friday morning. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, Maine. Donations can be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.

Jonathan M. Bly

RYE - Jonathan M. Bly, 53, of 7 Holland Drive, died on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long struggle with cancer, which he fought courageously for the people he loved.

Born in North Conway on May 26, 1948, he was the son of Natalie (Waterman) Bly and the late Robert W. Bly.

He was a graduate of Milford High School and received his B.A. degree from New Hampshire College. He served in the U.S. Navy and saw action in the Vietnam War.

A resident of the Seacoast for the past 30 years, he was the general manager of Standard Plumbing and Heating Co., where he had been employed for the past 28 years. He was active with the Boy Scouts as a committee chairman, and was a member of the Rye Lions Club.

In addition to his mother of Pembroke, survivors include his wife, Judi (Dionne) Bly; a daughter, Jennifer VanBuskirk and her husband, Robert, of Michigan; three sons, Jeffrey Bly of Missouri, and Jared Bly and Jordan Bly, both of Rye; three grandchildren, Blythe VanBuskirk, Hannah VanBuskirk and Jacoby Bly; one sister, Judy Bly Davis of Pembroke; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Dionne of Rye; in-laws Nancy and Dennis McCormack of Florida and Maria and John Rowe of Maine; his aunt and uncle, Meredith and Roland Christie of Jackson; and a cousin, Gerry Christie of New York.

BLY - Jonathan M. Bly, 53, of 7 Holland Drive, Rye, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye Beach. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of New Hampshire, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Sylvia F. Detwiler

EXETER - Sylvia F. Detwiler, 65, of Exeter Falls Drive, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. Born June 16, 1936, in Batavia, N.Y., she was a daughter of Frances (Peri) Mancuso of Williamsville, N.Y., and the late Charles Mancuso.

She grew up in Leroy, N.Y., where she graduated from the local high school. She then attended Brockport State and received her master's degree from Buffalo State.

She and her husband spent 17 years in Fairfield County, Conn., until they moved to Exeter in 1990.

She spent 14 years as an elementary school teacher before taking on motherhood and homemaking.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Exeter and a member of the Relief Society Women's Auxiliary.

In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, scrapbooking, and family life.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, John L. Detwiler of Exeter; one son and his wife, Kurt and Sonya Detwiler of Concord; her mother; and one sister, Clarine Radt of Williamsville, N.Y.

DETWILER - Sylvia F. Detwiler, 65, of Exeter, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A time of viewing will also be held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 55 Hampton Falls Road, Exeter, in the Relief Society Room. The funeral service will follow in the chapel of the church at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter.
