George W. Barclay

FINDLAY, Ohio - George W. Barclay, 71, of Findlay, died Oct. 6, 2001.

Born June 16, 1930, in Montpelier, Vt., he was the son of William G. and Marion A. (Pickering) Barclay.

He married Lorraine F. Machia, June 24, 1952, in Barre, Vt.

He was a plant manager for Harris Corp., retiring in 1989 after 37 years. He graduated in 1948 from Montpelier High School in Vermont; 1952 from the University of Vermont with a bachelor of science degree; 1957 from Newark College in Newark, N.J., with a master's degree in electrical engineering; and attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., where he received a master's of computer science in 1963.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Glenn S. of Dayton, and Wayne D. of Dennison, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Fran (Barbara A.) Donohoe of North Hampton, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay, with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Marguerite Michaud

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Mrs. Marguerite Michaud, who died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, were held Thursday afternoon at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, conducted services. A graveside committal service and burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dover, N.H., with the Rev. Nadeau reciting committal prayers.

Pallbearers were Sean Herbert, Bob Herbert, Brian Pinault, Raymond Tanguay, Don Tanguay and Dean DelGrosso. Following the services, friends and family gathered at the Michaud home for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

Richard W. Peyser

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Richard W. Peyser, 82, of 260 Aldrich Road, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 30, 1919, Mr. Peyser was the son of the late Honorable Harry W. Peyser and Katherine W. Peyser. He graduated from Portsmouth schools in 1936; the Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y., Class of 1937; and Dartmouth College in 1941. During World War II, he served as lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy until released to inactive duty in 1946.

He was employed as a field representative for Prentice Hall Inc. and the New Hampshire and Maine Register, until joining Tom Fabisak Realty in 1978, retiring in December 1993.

As a young man, Mr. Peyser played hockey with the Rye Sea Hawks, later was a member of the Portsmouth Country Club, and was a current member and past president of the Warwick Club.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Bridle Peyser, sons Richard W. Peyser Jr., David H. Peyser and John G. Peyser, daughter-in-law Laurie Peyser, and cousin Laurence G. Peyser, all of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren, Katharine Peyser, Jennifer Peyser, Kevin Peyser, Keith Peyser, Darcy Peyser, George Peyser, William Peyser, Richard Peyser, all of Portsmouth; and Elisabeth Peyser and Lauren Peyser, both of Rye; two nieces, Barbara Riley of Norwood, Mass., and Kate Huntress of Dover.

He was predeceased by his brother, Frank W. Peyser, in 1997, and sister, Virginia P. Kunkle, who passed away in 1991.

PEYSER - Mr. Richard W. Peyser, 82, of 260 Aldrich Road, Portsmouth, passed away on Oct. 11, 2001. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Monday at 10 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel, Sunday 4-6 p.m. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196; or to the Arthritis Foundation National Office, 1330 W. Peachtree St., N.W., Atlanta, GA 30309.

Andrew H. Wright

ELLSWORTH, Maine - Andrew H. Wright, 49, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001.

A resident of Ellsworth, he had lived at various times in recent years in Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery and York, Maine.

Born in Stamford, Conn., Dec. 18, 1952, he was the son of the late David H. and Anne (Marchand) Wright of Darien, Conn. He was a 1969 graduate of Bethel Academy, Bethel, Maine, and attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The former owner of Andy Wright Earthworks, he was employed in landscaping and masonry and was an avid sailor, skier, biker and hiker.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Monica Mitchell, of Orono; his sisters, Bonnie Wright of Darien, Conn., and Nancy Wright Grossman of Portsmouth, N.H.; a brother, David M. Wright of Southern Pines, N.C.; and a nephew, Seamus Curvin Grossman of Worcester, Mass.

Michael E. DiFilippo

HAMPTON - The funeral for Michael E. DiFilippo, 78, of Hampton, was held Friday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, Senior Priest, was the celebrant. Nelson Ward was the organist and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The pall was placed on the casket by Michael E. DiFilippo Jr. and Carol J. Hughes. The readings were offered by James DePhilippo and Jeannette Pepi. The gifts were presented to the altar by David Hersey and Trishia Perin. Words of remembrance were offered by David Hersey. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with committal prayers by Rev. Griffin. Pallbearers were David Hersey, James Perin, Frank Acetta, George Prou and Michael DiFilippo.

Jeremiah R. Pomerleau

KITTERY, Maine - A largely-attended memorial service was held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, for Jeremiah R. "Juck" Pomerleau, 21, of 8 Maple Ave. in Kittery, who died on Oct. 5, 2001, as a result of a traffic crash in Eliot. The service was held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

In attendance were family, many friends, co-workers and neighbors. The service included words of remembrance from his mother, father, grandmother, Shirley Lien, and his uncle, Sunny.

Ralph D. Eaton

SEABROOK - The funeral for Ralph D. Eaton, 59, of 76 South Main Street, was held Friday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, Pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Burial followed in the Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook, with committal prayers by Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Floyd Jones, Mike Demizo, Tim Brooks, Gerry Bouthillette, David Beaulieu and Jim Beaulieu. Masonic Services were held at the funeral home Friday night by the St. James Lodge #102 F&AM of Hampton.

Charles O. Best

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Charles O. Best, who died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, were held Friday morning at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, officiated.

Members of the Portsmouth Post No. 6 American Legion provided military honors. Members of the color guard were Richard Brooks and George McCall. The chaplain was Carl B. Walton, who presented the America flag to Mr. Best's sister, Helen Eldridge.

Friends spoke of his courage and patriotism, as well as his dedicated work ethics when he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Brooks Memorial Cemetery in Eliot, Maine. Pallbearers were James Earle, Robert Harris, David J. Cizmadia and the Rev. George Wardwell.

Flora A. Woodford

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Flora A. Woodford, 93, of 1324 U.S. Route 1, died Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Maine Stay Nursing Home in Sanford.

She was born on April 11, 1908, in York, the daughter of William and Laura (Woodward) Card. She was a graduate of York High School and Gorham Normal School.

Mrs. Woodford was an elementary school teacher beginning her teaching career at the Lincoln School on Cider Hill in York. She was later a teacher at the York Beach School and was a teacher and principal at the Cape Neddick Elementary School. Mrs. Woodford had also worked as a loom operator at the York Historical Society's Old Gaol.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach. Mrs. Woodford was a member of the Ladies Aid and was active sewing, knitting and baking for church events. She was also active in the Girl Scouts, the Audubon Society, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

She was predeceased by her husband, James "Eddie" Woodford, who died in 1990, and by a son, James Edward Woodford Jr., who died in 1976.

Survivors include one son, Warren Woodford of Bedford, Mass.; daughters Marcia Goodwin of Sanford, and Laura Edwards of Fishers Island, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

WOODFORD - Flora A. Woodford, 93, of U.S. Rte.1 Cape Neddick, Maine, widow of James "Eddie" Woodford, died Oct. 1, 2001 in Sanford, Maine. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York, Maine. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Flora Woodford to the York Community Service Assn., P.O. Box 85, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home.

E. Freeman Dunn

LOCHMERE, N.H. - Mr. E. Freeman Dunn, 75, of 19 Pine Grove, passed away after an extended illness, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H.

Born in Rye, N.H., on Aug. 18, 1926, he was the son of Edward F. and Jennie (Stevens) Dunn. He resided in Lochmere since 1988.

He was interested in New Hampshire wildlife and in his later years, formed a bird feeder supply business which served customers throughout the Lakes Region.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Quimby of Rochester, N.H., and Barbara Basham of Pensacola, Fla.; nieces and nephews; and the many friends he made in the greater Laconia area.

DUNN - Mr. E. Freeman Dunn, 75, of 19 Pine Grove, Lochmere, N.H., died Oct. 10, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminister Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with visitation one hour prior, from 10 to 11 a.m. Friends invited.

Barbara E. Dunlap

PORTSMOUTH - Barbara E. (Lane) Dunlap, 60, of 32 Blue Heron Drive, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born March 12, 1941, in Portsmouth, daughter of the late Laurence R. and Mary (Brown) Lane, and attended Portsmouth schools.

She was employed for Forsheda-Palmer-Cheard Inc. for 23 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah A. Gilker of Portsmouth and Zabrina Baker of Alabama; three grandchildren, Drucilla Brown, Cassandra Baker and Jamie Baker, all of Alabama; a sister, Patricia Shaw of Kittery, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

DUNLAP - Barbara E. (Lane) Dunlap, 60, of 32 Blue Heron Drive, Portsmouth, died Oct. 12, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Ralph A. Littlefield Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Ralph A. Littlefield Sr., 74, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1927, in Kittery, Maine, a son of the late Sidney H. and Irene L. (Bates) Littlefield.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1948 and graduated from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

He was a shop master in Shop #38 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 35 years. He was a member of the Emerson Hovey V.F.W. Post #168 of Portsmouth. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He had lived in North Hampton for 42 years, having moved from Portsmouth.

He was the husband of the late Joan A. (Hartford) Littlefield.

Family members include two sons, Ralph A. Littlefield Jr. and his wife, Christine, of North Hampton and Jeffrey L. Littlefield and his wife, Patricia Denke, of Belgrade, Mont.; one daughter, Heather L. Good of Rye; one brother, George F. Littlefield of Great Falls, Mont.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his fiancée of 16 years, Sharon Good of Rye; and several nieces and nephews.

LITTLEFIELD - Ralph A. Littlefield Sr., of North Hampton, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Burial will be private.

Joan M. Pierce

PORTSMOUTH - Joan M. Pierce, 70, of Bedford Way, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born in Millinocket, Maine, on Aug. 2, 1931, she was a daughter of Alphy and Jeannette (Levasseur) Grivois and had been a resident of Portsmouth for most of her life.

She was employed for many years as a dietary aide at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A former member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, she was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Rae Harris of Goleta, Calif.; two sons, David Pierce of Irvine, Calif., and Raymond Pierce Jr. of Delray Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Chelsea and Brendan Pierce; two sisters, Marilyn Heroux of Portsmouth and Linda Grivois of Dover; one brother, Ronald Grivois of Berwick, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

PIERCE - Joan M. Pierce, 70, of Portsmouth, died Oct. 11, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Richard W. Peyser

PORTSMOUTH - A funeral service for Richard W. Peyser, 82, of 260 Aldrich Road, was held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Monday. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church, in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance offered by Mr. Peyser's wife, Barbara Bridle Peyser, and son John G. Peyser were read by the Rev. Shippee. Mr. Peyser's son Richard W. Peyser Jr. also gave words of remembrance.

Burial was in Proprietors Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Bearers were Richard W. Peyser Jr., John G. Peyser, George Peyser, Kevin Peyser and Tom Fabisak.

Honorary bearers were Laurence Peyser, Albert Bergeron, Dr. William Wilson, Leighton Remick, C. Richard Williams and William Devine.

Gerald E. Workman

DOVER - Gerald E. "Gene" Workman, 64, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, following an extended battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 6, 1937, in Thebes, Ill., a son of the late Gerald and Nelda (Benifield) Workman.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

A retired master electrician, he had worked many years locally through Local #490 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

He was a member of Moose Lodge #443, the Dover Elks Lodge, American Legion Post #8 and the Sportsmen's Club of Rollinsford.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jo-An M. (Steuerwald) Workman; three sons, Michael of Apopka, Fla., Larry of Starkville, Miss., and James and his wife, Maureen, of Hampton; one daughter, Kelly Hubbard of Somersworth; one granddaughter, Nicole Workman of Hampton; one brother, Phil of Lawson, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

WORKMAN - Gerald E. "Gene" Workman, 64, of Dover, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of New Hampshire. To send condolences, go to www.csnh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.

Anthony J. Marcuri

SARASOTA, Fla. - Anthony J. (Joe) Marcuri, husband of Jeanette (Williams) Marcuri, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, following a short illness.

His early years were spent in Portsmouth, including graduation from high school. He started working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1941 and was soon furloughed to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he served during World War II. He returned to the shipyard in 1945, where he remained until retiring in 1977 as a reactor plant general foreman after nearly 36 years of service. He worked on every nuclear submarine constructed at Portsmouth, from the Swordfish (SSN579) to the Sand Lance (SSN660), and on every nuclear submarine overhauled at Portsmouth, beginning with the USS Nautilus (SSN571). His many, broad talents and personable communication skills were particularly suited to the challenges of the nuclear propulsion program as it developed at PNS. When a job just had to be completed, he got it done - on time and within the unyielding demands for perfection

Before retirement, Joe and Jan resided on Haley Road in Kittery, Maine. They were members of the Portsmouth Country Club, where they enjoyed many fine acquaintances. He was active in the Masonic Bodies in the Portsmouth area, including: St. Andrews Lodge #56, F&AM; Washington Chapter #3, RAM; Davenport Council #5, R&SM; and DeWitt Clinton Commandery #2, KT. He was also a Noble of Kora Temple, AAONMS, of Lewiston, Maine.

His retirement years in Sarasota were filled with the usual golf and good food, and included the exercise of his considerable talents for creating superb leaded-glass articles, from sun catchers to lamps to elaborate wall hangings and curios. He was happiest when he was busy, the mark of a true craftsman.

He leaves his wife; his sisters, Judy Wayne of Portsmouth and Rose Hodgdon of Smithsfield, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and warm friends.
