Emaline H. Terry

EXETER - Emaline H. Terry, 76, of 2 Hall Place, Exeter, died on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

She was born April 15, 1925, in Pahl, Germany, a daughter of the late Max and Sofie Joa. She had resided in Exeter for almost nine years. Previously, she had lived in Glen Burnie, Md., for approximately 30 years.

She was predeceased by her brother, Max Joa Jr., of Weilheim, Germany, and a sister, Marie Haarpaintner, of Munich, Germany.

She is survived by three sons, Ilmar Shipman of Munich, Germany, James Shipman and his wife, Patti, of Durham, N.C., and Jack Shipman and his wife, Shelly, and their son, Jimmy, of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Emily Wright and her son, Michael, of Spokane, Wash., and Christy Utter and her husband, Phil, and their sons, Nick and Max, of Exeter; a sister, Charlotte Hager, and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Joa, both of Weilheim, Germany. She is also survived by her beloved Chihuahua, Teenzie.

TERRY - Emaline H. Terry, 76, of Exeter, died on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at St. Michael's Church in Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. SPCA in Stratham.

George S. Surpitski

IPSWICH, Mass. - George S. Surpitski, 82, of Ipswich, died Oct. 8, 2001, at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the life companion of Lorraine Cook, with whom he shared 30 years.

Born April 1, 1919, in Ipswich, he was the son of the late Charles and Victoria (Skeina) Surpitski.

He had been employed with the former United Shoe Manufacturing Co. in Beverly, from which he retired.

In addition to his joy in traveling the countryside and working on puzzles at home, his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his life companion, survivors include his daughter, Marie Cook of Kingston, N.H.; four grandchildren, Jestine Olsen of Kingston, Stephen and Kristen Olsen of Newbury, and Michelle Cooper of Danville, N.H.; five great-grandchildren, Joseph Abouzeid of Kingston, Ashley, Lindsay and Melanie Cooper, and Jonathon Smith, all of Danville, N.H.

A graveside funeral service was held on Oct. 11 from New Highland Cemetery in Ipswich. A bagpiper played and a letter in remembrance from Jonathon Smith was read.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

E. Freeman Dunn

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for E. Freeman Dunn, 75, of 19 Pine Grove, Lochmere, N.H., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Soloist was Harold Kellenbeck.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, in Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Gum.

Bearers were Doug Watson, Michael Feinstein, Gary Fogg, Bob Johnson and Jim Reneau.

Milan C. Miller

ELIOT, Maine - Milan C. Miller, 83, of 15 Goodwin Road, died Oct. 17, 2001, at his home. Born in York, Maine, on Feb. 25, 1918, he was a son of Harry and Alice (Moulton) Miller.

He was raised on Cider Hill in York and attended local schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star.

He was married in 1939 to his loving wife of over 61 years, Lillian (Fernald) Miller. They moved to Eliot, where they made their home and raised a family.

He was employed for more than 37 years at the National Gypsum Co. in Portsmouth as a millwright.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors cutting the grass, working in the garden and attending fairs. He was a hard worker, both at work and outside at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Eliot; two daughters, Judy Beth and her husband, David, of Eliot, and Betty Fitzsimmons and her husband, Henry, of Eliot; and five grandchildren, Lori Prunier, of Somersworth, N.H., Deborah Phillips, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Henry Fitzsimmons, of Newmarket, N.H., David Beth Jr., of Gloucester Township, N.J., and Adam Beth, of Eliot.

MILLER - Milan C. Miller, 83, of Goodwin Road in Eliot, Maine, died Oct. 17, 2001, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Chapel in Eliot. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Barbara E. Dunlap

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service for Barbara E. (Lane) Dunlap, 60, of 32 Blue Heron Drive, Portsmouth, was held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Wednesday. Bishop Smart of the Church of Latter Day Saints officiated.

Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, in Eliot, Maine, with committal services by Bishop Smart.

Ralph A. Littlefield Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Ralph A. Littlefield Sr., 74, of North Hampton, was held Wednesday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Timothy T. Rich, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, officiated. Ralph A. Littlefield Jr. offered a reading. Organist was Nelson K. Ward. Scottish laments were accorded to Mr. Littlefield by Donald A. Matheson.

The flag that covered the casket was presented to Mr. Littlefield's fiancé, Sharon Good, by Mr. Littlefield's brother, George F. Littlefield. Burial was private.

Allan D. MacDonald

EXETER - Allan D. MacDonald, 60, of 2 Wentworth St., died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born in Dover, the son of Ralph H. and Rosebell (Blanchette) MacDonald and was a 1959 graduate of York High School where he excelled in scholastics and football.

He attended the University of Maine at Orono and the University of New Hampshire, playing football at both universities. He continued his love of football by attending many professional and college games. He also attended Harvard, Dartmouth and Yale.

He was a mechanical engineer and had formerly been employed at Sprague Energy.

He was quadriplegic for the past 11 years, after a tragic auto accident in 1990. He remained socially and intellectually active with his family and many friends. He enjoyed sailing and the outdoors and caring for stray animals and birds. He also dedicated his time helping the homeless.

Survivors include a sister, Pamela Edwards of York, Maine;. two half-brothers, Peter Hughes of York Beach, Maine, and Patrick Hughes of Cape Neddick, Maine; two nieces, Kimberly Edwards and Brittany Hughes; and two nephews, Brett Hughes and Shane Francis Hughes.

MacDONALD - Allan D. MacDonald of 2 Wentworth St., Exeter, died in Dover, Oct. 17, 2001. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations maybe made to the Rockingham Visiting Nurse Association, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

Geraldine L. Stanley

HAMPDEN, Maine - Geraldine L. Stanley, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at her residence.

She was born July 2, 1925, in Linneus, the daughter of Edward and Nellie B. (Kitchen) Ivey.

She was a member of the Court Street Baptist Church in Houlton. She was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed a lifelong love of baking and sharing with others. Her family and friends will miss her homemade goodies for which she won many blue ribbons at the Bangor State Fair.

Throughout her life, she was involved in many community service organizations. She was a retired waitress from Pilots Grill. Many will remember her smile.

Survivors include one brother, Henry Ivey and his wife, Marcinne, of Houlton; five children, Donna Miller-Larsen and her husband, Robert Larsen, of Augusta, Charlotte and her husband, R.W. "Duke" Nolte, of Hampden, Walter P. Stanley III of New London, Conn., Wendy Stanley Jones and her husband, H. Turner Jones III, of Exeter, N.H., and William I. Stanley of Winthrop; 11 grandchildren, Louie Jr., Scott, and Troy Collins, Heidi Hickey, Kelle Choate, Nicole Pishkur, Shannon and Michael Stanley, and Stephani, Chris and Catherine Ivey Jones; 11 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Trevor, Lindsey, Zachary and Jordan Collins, Chelsey, Jake, Shane, Ryan and Meredith Hickey, and Jada Choate; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Christine, and one brother, John.

STANLEY - Geraldine L. Stanley, 76, of Hampden, Maine, died Oct. 17, 2001. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday (today) at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m., the Rev. Rick Dickinson officiating. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton. Gifts in her memory may be sent to Eastern Maine Charities, for the benefit of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Support Group, P.O. Box 404, Bangor, ME 04402-0404; or to a charity of one's choice.

Carol Hicks

VENICE, Fla. - The funeral for Carol Hicks, 81, of Venice, was held Thursday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Church. The Rev. Michael Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was soloist. Members of the Holy Name Society were the altar servers.

Burial followed in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook, N.H., with the committal service conducted by Father Griffin. Pallbearers were Paul Kevin, Steven Tibbetts, Moe Yugean and Jum Fay.

Michael E. Eastman

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Michael "Mike" Eric Eastman, 53, passed away unexpectedly of a massive coronary on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, while in Hawaii. He recently had relocated to Hawaii for its warmth and beauty in September of this year.

Born July 21, 1948 in Exeter, N.H., he graduated from Marshwood High School in 1968.

He worked for many years in the newspaper business, most recently as distribution manager at the Portsmouth Herald.

He leaves his mother and father, Robert D. and Hariet J. (Villars) Eastman of South Berwick; his daughter, Erica and her husband, Todd Amazeen, of Dover, N.H.; a son, Steven and his wife, Stella (VanDenHandel) Eastman, of Annerley, Australia. Both Erica and Steven are recent newlyweds.

He also leaves behind a brother, Robert (Bob) and his wife, Gini Eastman, of Exeter, N.H.; a sister, Kathleen and her husband, Michael Lorenz, with whom Mike was living at the time of his death, in Kapaa Kauai, Hawaii; a brother, Peter and his wife, Carole Eastman, of South Berwick; a sister, Linda M. Eastman of South Berwick; and a brother, John Eastman of Provincetown, Mass.; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a colorful array of many friends that he pieced together with fun, kindness, laughter and love.

Heaven has found a keeper in the life of Mike. God's hand reached out on that fateful day ... come Mike, I am taking you Home, to a better place ... Paradise. Perhaps, Heaven needed "a distribution manager, with ink in his blood ... to deliver, on time, the papers ... ."

EASTMAN - Michael "Mike" Eastman, 53, of Hawaii, formerly of the Seacoast, passed away Oct. 13, 2001. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donna Lee Muise officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in South Berwick. Arline F. Hughes

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Arline F. (Laderbush) Hughes, 81, of 55 Congress St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Friday. Mrs. Judy Bunnell, director of the Senior Center in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Hughes' son, George A. Hughes. Vocalist was Herbert Bunnell.

In attendance were representatives from the Senior Center in Portsmouth.

Burial was in the Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Maine, with committal service by Judy Bunnell.

Bearers were Nick Harrington, Kenneth Wilder, Joel Hughes, Jonathan Martin, Larry Laderbush and George White.

VFW services were held Thursday evening at the funeral home by the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168 Women's Auxiliary, including Brenda Walton, president; Shirley Lein, chaplain PDP; Pam Schmidt, conductress; and Joanne Paradis, senior vice president. Also assisting in services were Shirley Calvert, American Legion Auxiliary No. 6 dept. president; June Daley, American Legion Auxiliary No. 6 past dept. president; Carl Walton, Post 168 commander; and Paul Cushing, District No. 7 commander.

Mildred E. Reed Gay

PORTSMOUTH - Mildred E. Reed Gay, age 88, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in Minister, Pa., in 1917, the daughter of Harry A. and Irma Archer Smith. She attended Bradford, Pa., schools and received degrees from the University of Cincinnati, MA in sociology, and an MLS from Pratt University, in New York City. She taught writing and art privately and at the University of Cincinnati and other institutions.

She resided in the Seacoast area for the last (nearly) 40 years, where she continued her private tutoring. She retired from the Rochester Public Library in 1985, where she worked part-time in both the adult and children's departments. She served our country for over three years as an officer in the WAAC and the WAC, being assigned to the Air Corps.

She is survived by one brother, Frederick H. Smith of Hoffman Estates, Ill. "The thing of it is, when I get the call to take over the planet of the angels, I don't want to be draggin' my feet!" At Milli's request there will not be any funeral or memorial services. You may make a donation in her memory to the Rochester Public Library, Children's Room, Rochester, NH 03867.

Joan A. April

SEABROOK BEACH, N.H. - Joan A. (Gallant) April, 89, of 7 Manchester St., died Oct. 18, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 3, 1912, in St. Alexis, Canada, the daughter of the late Octave and Josephine (Petre) Gallant. She formerly resided in Hamilton, Mass., where she had attended St. Paul's Church. She had resided at Seabrook Beach since 1952, and was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter, and a volunteer at Exeter Hospital.

She was the widow of Arthur J. April who died in 1973, and was also predeceased by a son, Arnold A. April who died in 1973.

She is survived by three daughters, Joan M. April of Rye, Carole April Binette of Hampton Falls, and Sally April Bowman of Kingston; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Amelia Jeffery of Salem, Mass.; one brother, Joseph Stanley Gallant of Beverly, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

APRIL - Joan A. (Gallant) April, 89, of 7 Manchester St., Seabrook Beach, N.H., died Oct. 18, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday at St. Michael's Church, located on the corner of Front Street and Lincoln Street in Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Webster At Rye Health and Retirement, 795 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870; or to St. Vincent DePaul, c/o St. Michael's Rectory, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Shawn M. Brigham

PORTSMOUTH - Shawn M. Brigham, 32, of 57 Concord Way, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth, Sept. 21, 1969, he was the son of John C. and Sheila A. (Mahoney) Brigham. He was a graduate of Marshwood High School, Class of 1988, and Valley Forge Christian College in Pennsylvania.

He worked as a carpenter and enjoyed sports. A member of the Well of Living Water Christian Fellowship, he was involved with the youth ministry there.

In addition to his parents of Eliot, Maine, he is survived by his wife Pamela A. (Bothwick) Brigham; one son, George "Randy" Brigham; a brother, Christopher M. Brigham of Portland, Maine; a sister, Kelly A. Brigham of Eliot, Maine; his in-laws, Harold M. and Cynthia A. Bothwick of Alton, N.H., and their children, Harold M. Bothwick III, Elaine F. Bothwick, Ian P. Bothwick, Isaac W. Bothwick and Ruth O. Bothwick.

BRIGHAM - Shawn M. Brigham, 32, of 57 Concord Way, Portsmouth, died Oct. 17, 2001. A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Greenland Road, Portsmouth, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. with the Rev. Garrett Lear conducting a service at 6 p.m. Donations may be made to a memorial fund for Pamela and Randy, c/o Harold Bothwick, 7 Old Wolfeboro Road, Alton, NH 03809.

Lillian Goldin

PORTSMOUTH - Lillian (Deitch) Goldin, 84, of Middle Road in Portsmouth, widow of Rabbi Aaron Goldin, died at her home on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.

Born in Natick, Mass., on June 15, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Goldie (Berman) Deitch. Both parents were natives of Lithuania. She graduated from Boston Teachers College (now UMass Boston) with the class of 1938.

After graduation, she taught school briefly before her marriage to Rabbi Aaron Goldin, with whom she moved to Pawtucket, R.I. in 1942. In 1960, her husband took his second professional position as Rabbi of Temple Israel, and the family moved to Middle Road in Portsmouth.

After the sudden death of her husband in 1966, she returned to teaching by becoming a full-time substitute at Portsmouth High School, a role she loved until she stepped down at the age of 79.

As the wife of the leader of two separate congregations, she dedicated herself to community service with passion, compassion, joy and grace. As a teacher, she continued that commitment by bringing those same qualities to the classroom and her students and through special and devoted friendships with all who worked there.

All who knew her loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Goldin, of Portsmouth; a son, Stephen Goldin, of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Cecilia Adler, of Newton, Mass.; several nieces and nephews; and a number of cousins.

GOLDIN - Lillian (Deitch) Goldin, 84, of Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Oct. 19, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lillian's memory may be made to the Lillian Goldin Education Scholarship Fund, c/o Richard Gremlitz, Portsmouth High School, 50 Alumni Circle, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.
