Catherine M. Kezer

PORTSMOUTH - Catherine M. (Hemmer) Kezer, 95, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of 4 Mount Vernon St., Dover, died on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born May 23, 1906, in Roxbury, Mass., she was a daughter of Alfred and Ellen (Griffin) Hemmer.

She worked as a stenographer for Westinghouse in Massachusetts.

She loved running and playing bingo.

She is survived by three sons, Walter Kelly of Riverside, R.I., Joseph Kelly of Manchester, and Robert Kelly of Durham; one daughter, Eleanor Streeter of Portsmouth; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Myles Kelly, and her second husband, Frederick Kezer; a sister, Virginia; and three brothers, George, Edward and Alfred.

KEZER - Catherine M. (Hemmer) Kezer, 95, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, and formerly of 4 Mount Vernon St., Dover, died on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church or to a charity of one's choice.

Doris C. Stanley

TAUTON, Mass. - Mrs. Doris C. (Moran) Stanley, 84, the widow of Merwin R. Stanley, of 33 Summer St., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the Marian Manor Nursing Home in Taunton.

Born in Waltham, on March 5, 1917, she was the daughter of Thomas W. and Bertha F. (Morley) Moran.

She was a former communicant of St. Mary's Church in Waltham.

She was a volunteer with Senior Citizen activities and Council on Aging. As a resident at Marian Manor Nursing Home, she was an advocate for the other residents who needed assistance.

Survivors include three children, Thomas F. Hartwell of Salinas, Calif., D. Donna Bickford of Taunton, and Kenneth R. Stanley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Thomas F. Hartwell Jr., and Michael Hartwell, both of Colorado, Scott Bickford of New Bedford, Mass., Shannon Parente of North Smithfield, R.I., Stephanie Bickford of Derry, N.H., Cathie Stanley of Taunton, Mass., and Eric Stanley of Indiana; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Richard Moran.

Funeral services were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., with graveside services held at Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth. Father Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor of St. James Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Pall bearers were Kenneth R. Stanley, Walter A. Bickford Jr., and Scott A. Bickford.

Anthony Rollins

DOVER - A largely attended funeral service for Anthony Rollins, who died Oct. 22, 2001, was held at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery. Pastor Robert Cole, of the Bethel Christian Church of North Berwick, Maine, conducted the services.

Renown gospel singer, Kenneth Fernald, sang two of Mr. Rollins' favorite hymns, "In the Garden," and "Serenaded by Angels." A close friend of Mr. Rollins shared memories, and reflected on his life.

A graveside committal service and burial took place in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, Maine. Pastor Cole presided with the committal prayers.

Pallbearers were Jeff Rollins, David Perkins, Mike Dellolio, Danny Perkins, Bill Housel and Al Machardo.

A time of sharing, refreshment and fellowship followed the services at the Eliot Methodist Church.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to the Kittery Police Department, for their assistance in traffic control to ensure a safe procession to the cemetery.

David E. Hammond

OWLS HEAD, Maine - David E. Hammond, 85, of Owls Head, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Camden.

Born Nov. 11, 1915 in Rye, N.H., he was the son of John and Harriett Carew Hammond. He graduated from Hampton Academy.

During World War II, he served with the "Seabees."

He was a conservation officer with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department for 25 years. He later served as the director of the Loon Preservation Committee, a project of the Audubon Society, and as the director of the Squam Lakes Science Center.

He was a master hunter safety instructor and for many years, was a wildlife conservation instructor with the Boy Scouts.

In 1979, he and his wife moved from Moultonboro, N.H., to Owls Head, Maine. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary-Pen Bay Flotilla in 1982. He was active for many years and a member until his death. He was a lifetime member of the Moosehead Lake Fisheries Coalition.

He was an ardent, devoted and enthusiastic spokesperson for wildlife and wildlife conservation for his entire adult life.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1997. He leaves a son, Robert M. Hammond of Moultonboro; one daughter, Elizabeth Minehan of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Hammond of North Hampton, N.H.; and his good friend, Joan Bennett of Camden.

HAMMOND - David E. Hammond, 85, of Owls Head, Maine, died Oct. 10, 2001. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland, Maine.

Robert B. Richardson

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Robert B. Richardson, 78, of Cape Coral, died Oct. 23, 2001. He was born in Fleetwood, England. He joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the HMS Newfouland for the duration of World War II.

He married Ellian Lambert of Lawrence, Mass., in 1946 and moved to America. They lived in Methuen, Mass., until 1984 and then moved to Cape Coral.

He worked in public relations for Western Electric in North Andover, Mass. He earned a master's of education degree in psychology and English, and did clinical hypothesis.

In Cape Coral, he was a professor at Edison Community College. He also did some writing for magazines and wrote a book. He was well liked by all types of people and made many friends wherever he went. He volunteered to help at several organizations. His wife Ellian died in October 2000. He is survived by a son, Stuart; three grandchildren, Dylan, Dalton and Noah of Kittery, Maine; two sisters, Marjorie and Lila of England.

RICHARDSON - Robert B. Richardson, 78, of Cape Coral, Fla., died Oct. 23, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Nov. 5, 2001, at Coral Ridge Funeral Home.

Mary E. Jones

HAMPTON - Mary E. Jones, 94, of 22 Tuck Road, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001.

She was born in Rockland, Mass., on June 8, 1907, the daughter of Warren and Delia (McMorrow) Hamilton. She worked as a department store manager for the F.W. Woolworth Company and later worked for 20 years for the F.L. & J.C. Cod Company as a stitcher. She also worked with her husband at the Jones Gas Station in East Pembroke, Mass., which they owned and operated for 30 years.

She had resided in Hampton since 1981, having come from East Pembroke, Mass. She was a member of the former Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary of Rockland, Mass.

She was the wife of the late LeRoy E. Jones, who died in 1971. Surviving her are her daughter, Nancy A. DesRochers, and her husband, Horace "Buddy" DesRochers, of Hampton; a sister, Arlene Leckstrom of Whitman, Mass.; and two nephews.

JONES - Mary E. Jones of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, formerly of East Pembroke, Mass., died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Troop 177 BSA, 19 Forrest Drive, Hampton, NH 03842. Burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery, Rockland, Mass.

Stanley E. Ernest

NEWMARKET - Stanley E. Ernest, 79, of New Road, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born in Garland, Maine, on Oct. 18, 1922, he was the son of William H. and Eva (Haskell) Ernest. He was raised in Garland and was a 1940 graduate of Garland High School before coming to Newmarket in 1954. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy, and he was a 48-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket. He was a heavy-equipment operator for 38 years with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 4 in Boston.

His wife, Constance D. (Little) Ernest, died in 1989.

Survivors include four sons, William O. Ernest and Kevin D. Ernest, both of Newmarket, Glenn E. Ernest of Baltimore, Md., and Brian S. Ernest of Rochester; four grandchildren; one sister, Geraldine Clark of Bangor, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

ERNEST - Stanley E. Ernest, 79, of Newmarket, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St. in Newmarket. An American Legion service will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service with the Rev. Robert Collinge officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Newfields Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Collinge officiating. Flowers are acceptable, or, should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Catherine M. Kezer

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Catherine M. (Hemmer) Kezer, 95, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of 4 Mount Vernon St., Dover, were held on Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Edward J. Kelley, pastor, was the celebrant, and altar server was Richie Curry. Placing of the pall was done by Patty Smith and Peggy Franceschini. The crucifix was placed on the casket by daughter Eleanor Streeter. Presentation of the gifts was done by Natalie Smith and Eleanor Streeter. Readings were given by Nel Leading and Melissa Smith. Susan Bove was the vocalist, and Marion Arnoldy was the organist.

In attendance were communicants of the church, including members of the Bereavement Committee.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Kelley.

Bearers were John Leaming, Jeff Kelly, Paul Franceschini, Tony Streeter, James Smith and Allen Smith.

Wake services were held at the funeral home on Friday evening by the Rev. Kelley.

Betty J. Scales

HOLLIS - Betty Jane (Witham) Scales, of 42 Pierce Lane, died at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack on Friday evening, Oct. 26, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Portsmouth on Nov. 20, 1940, daughter of the late Walter I. and Frances (Butler) Witham. A resident of Hollis for the past 25 years, she had previously lived in Hampton and Stratham.

She was the wife of Samuel W. Scales of Hollis.

She had worked for Sears for many years before she opened her own business. She owned and operated the Printwell Copy Shop in Dracut, Mass., for 17 years until her retirement last year.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who will be dearly missed. She enjoyed traveling and sailing and always had a smile.

She was educated in Exeter and graduated from Exeter High School in the Class of 1959.

In addition to her husband of 38 years, survivors include two sons, Richard Scales and his friend Susan of Waltham, Mass., and Brian Scales and his wife, Jennifer, of Merrimack; a grandson, Eric Scales of Milford; a sister, Marjorie Fisher and her husband, Robert, of Eliot, Maine; a brother, Walter R. Witham and his wife, Janice, of Portsmouth; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Albert and Paula Scales of Merrimack and Cornelius and Sylvia Moynahan of Eliot, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

SCALES - Betty Jane (Witham) Scales, of 42 Pierce Lane, Hollis, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Merrimack. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St., Nashua. A funeral service in her honor will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Davis Funeral Home. Friends are invited to attend. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider: Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054; American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101. Arrangements are in the care of Davis Funeral Home, Nashua, (603) 883-3401.

Ramona T. Sedoric

EXETER - Ramona Trout Sedoric, a RiverWoods resident and civic leader, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001.

She was born in a log cabin in Lawson, Mo., to Hazel D. Trout and Clyde S. Trout. She attended local schools and worked the family farm with her father and older brother, James Truman Trout. Sedoric attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. She enjoyed a gift of considerable strength and beauty and often graced and enlivened dance contests and pageants in the early 1940s. Before World War II, she worked in the U.S. Department of Agriculture as fellow Missourian Harry S. Truman became a senator and later the vice president. After Truman became president, Sedoric served in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

After the war, she moved to the Chicago area, where she met and married John Sedoric. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on Oct. 5, 2001, with friends and family at RiverWoods.

John, Ramona and their son, Tom, spent many years in Beloit, Wisc. There she devoted her time, energy and talent to the United Way, YWCA, Beloit Hospital, Junior Women's Club and The First Congregational Church. She later worked for Beloit College and as a residential Realtor in Columbus, Ohio, during retirement. She and her husband also resided in Pinerolo, Italy, and Libery, Mo., during their many years together.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John, of Exeter; her dearly loved son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Barb, of Rye Beach; grandchildren Holly and Boone Davis and Annie Sedoric; as well as many friends and other family members who will miss her engaging smile and her zest for life.

SEDORIC - Ramona Trout Sedoric, of RiverWoods of Exeter, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in the Great Bay Room at RiverWoods of Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Seacoast Hospice or to The Seacoast Young Team (a bicycle team devoted to raising funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) at 170 Commerce Way, Suite 202, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
