Elizabeth A. Childs

EXETER - Elizabeth A. "Bette" Childs, 67, of 5 Smith Avenue, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born Aug. 8, 1934 in Nashua, N.H., the daughter of the late Bernard A. and Mary E. (Paradis) Hutchinson.

Mrs. Childs was raised in Milford, N.H. and graduated from Milford High School and Keene Teachers College. She moved to Exeter in 1966, where she taught fourth grade at the Lincoln Street School for 24 years. Previous to this she taught school for three years in Milford.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, a member of the Exeter Arts Committee, a volunteer at the Exeter Hospital in Short Term Stay, she was an avid Red Sox fan and she also enjoyed her gardens, walking, reading and she had a passion for children's books. She was a gifted teacher and enjoyed and shared in her husband's love of his art work and exhibiting his work. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and wonderful grandmother.

Family members include her husband of 42 years, William "Bill" F. Childs of Exeter; one son, Jay B. Childs and his wife, Arlene E. of Exeter; one daughter, Lisa Wilson and her husband, Michael C. of Exeter; two grandchildren, Katharine E. Wilson and Allison E. Wilson both of Exeter; and one stepsister, Florence Cooney of Springfield, Va.

Mrs. Childs was predeceased by her sister, Marilyn Hutchinson.

CHILDS - Elizabeth "Bette" A. Childs of 5 Smith Avenue, Exeter, died Nov. 1, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call Sunday, from 4-7 p.m., and Monday, from 6-9 p.m., at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Flowers are acceptable. If desired, donations may be made to the Lincoln Street School Library, 25 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833 or the Exeter Public Library Children's Room, 1 Founders Park, Exeter, NH 03833. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

Clarence W. Palm

LEE - Clarence W. "Swede" Palm, 83, husband of Helena (Fisher) Palm of 41 Belle Lane, and former resident of Exeter for 40 years, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 20, 1918, the son of the late Carl and Gunhild (Carlberg) Palm.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and served in the Army during World War II and Korea.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Palm was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a shipfitter general forman in Shop 11.

Mr. Palm was a 4-H Leader in Rockingham County for more than 35 years. He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge #56 F&AM of Portsmouth for more than 50 years.

Mr. Palm had an incredible artistic ability, which was seen in the paintings he did. He also was an excellent craftsman and enjoyed wooden shipbuilding.

Besides Helena, his wife of 48 years, survivors include a son, Thomas F. Palm of Exeter; three daughters, Harriet Hoffmann of Milton, Mass., Susan C. Armstrong of Kensington, and Cathy Lavery of Brentwood; a sister, May C. Smith of Rye; eight grandchildren, Mathew Armstong, Megan Armstrong, Andrew Armstrong, Ryan Palm, Roshelle Palm, Raulee Palm, Joseph Lavery and Sean Lavery.

PALM - Clarence W. "Swede" Palm, 83, of 41 Belle Lane, Lee, N.H., died Nov. 1, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, N.H. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home with Masonic services at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, by St. Andrew's Lodge #56 F.&A.M. Flowers will be accepted or donations in Mr. Palm's memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 662 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820.

Ferne Chadbourne

WESTBROOK, Maine - Funeral services for Ferne Chadbourne, who died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, were held Friday at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Kittery. The Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, Pastor, conducted services. Susan Utoh was the organist. Mrs. Chadbourne's grandchildren spoke of fond memories of their grandmother, and a grandson, Mark Chadbourne sang "Be Still My Soul," which was a favorite hymn of Ferne's. Mrs. Chadbourne's son, The Rev. Mervin Chadbourne, spoke of the precious final days of his mother's life and how very meaningful it was to him and family.

A graveside committal service and burial took place at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery where Rev. Carrico recited committal prayers. Pallbearers were Scott Chadbourne, Bradley Skellings, Justin Berry, Glenn Berry, Lloyd Graves and Michael Sinclair.

Alma H. Cricenti

NEW LONDON, N.H. - Alma H. (Whitman) Cricenti, 78, of County Road, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at The Clough Center, where she had resided for the past six months. Previously she had resided at Woodcrest Village in New London for five years.

Mrs. Cricenti was born in Kittery, Maine, on Dec. 4, 1922, the daughter of Robert C. and Hazel L. (Wasgatt) Whitman. She spent her early years in Kittery and graduated from Traip Academy in Kittery in 1940. Mrs. Cricenti received a bachelor of education degree from Keene Teachers College and taught in New London for many years. She moved to New London in 1945.

She helped her husband with Cricenti's Markets Inc. for many years and trained the cashiers as well as taking care of the many details it takes to run a business.

She was a member of The First Baptist Church of New London and had been secretary for the Residents' Council at Woodcrest Village. During her years in New London, she had been active in many civic and service organizations. Her husband, Frank N. Cricenti, died in 1990.

Mrs. Cricenti is survived by two sons, Robert J. Cricenti of New London, and Philip M. Cricenti of New London; two granddaughters, Soraya H. Cricenti-Collins of Burlington, N.C., and Johanna D. Nichols of Floyd, Va.; two sisters, Margaret Spinney of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Dorothy J. MacDonald of Taylors, S.C.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

CRICENTI - Alma H. (Whitman) Cricenti, 78, of County Road, New London, died Nov. 1, 2001. A service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London, with the Rev. Renee Kaufman, chaplain at Woodcrest Village, and the Rev. Scott Cousineau, associate pastor of The First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kearsarge Regional High School, Frank N. Cricenti Memorial Fund, North Sutton, NH 03260. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London is in charge of arrangements.

R. Pat Finan

SEABROOK - R. Pat Finan, of 944 Lafayette Road, Adams Village, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Rev. Peter and Lena (Perekrestenko) Pleshko.

Mrs. Finan was raised in North Dakota, where she graduated from local schools, and later attended New Hampshire College.

She was employed by the Selective Service Board in Petaluma, Calif., the Non-appropriated Funds Department at the former Pease Air Force Base in Newington, and later retired as finance officer with the U.S. Army Recruiting Office in Boston in 1991 with 25 years of service.

Mrs. Finan completed her training as a family mediator in 1991 and volunteered as a mediator for the Rockingham County Family Mediation Program until 2000. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls.

Family members include one son, Douglas A. Finan and his wife Sally of Brentwood; one daughter, P. Dure Alamed and her husband Gary of Stratham; two grandchildren; one brother, Peter Pleshko and his wife Luda of New York; and a niece and nephew and their children.

FINAN - R. Pat Finan, of 944 Lafayette Road, Adams Village, Seabrook, died Nov. 2, 2001. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Hampton Falls, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3 Lincoln Ave., Hampton Falls, NH 03844; or to the Free Medical Clinic, P.O. Box 625, Hampton, NH 03842. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Constance W. Hankin

RYE - Funeral services for Mrs. Constance W. "Connie" (Walsh) Hankin, 73, of 32 Dow Lane, were held Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. Theresa's Church in Rye Beach. Father Maurice Lavigne was celebrant. Altar server was David Duggan. Placing of the pall was done by Russell H. Hankin Jr., Deborah J. Hankin, Sean F. Hankin and Elizabeth Pacitti.

The readings were given by Deborah J. Hankin and Sean F. Hankin. Prayers of the Faithful were offered by Gregory W. Hankin. Presentation of gifts was by Russell H. Hankin Jr. and Janette Miksch. Words of remembrance were given by William R. Hankin. Cantor was Mary Lou Arcidi, and Judy Kish was organist.

In attendance were communicants of St. Theresa's Church.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Father Lavigne.

Bearers were Albert Field, Harry Marcotte, Jason Hankin, Patrick Hankin, Richard Semprini and George Moynahan.

Wake services were held Friday evening by Father Lavigne at the funeral home.

Frank E. Kovacs

YORK, Maine - Frank Edward Kovacs, 59, of Peter Weare Road, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born Sept. 25, 1942, in Everett, Mass., the son of Frank and Louise Gertrude (Lyman) Kovacs, and graduated from Everett Vocational School. He served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

He was a rigger in Shop No. 72 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 36 years, retiring in 1999. As a rigger, he especially enjoyed working on the USS Constitution, docked in Boston.

He moved from Everett to York in 1976. He was a member of the York Elks, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Affairs of Norfolk, Va., and the Portsmouth (N.H.) Moose Club. He enjoyed working around his house and spending time with his family, especially with his granddaughter, Jordan.

He was the husband of Sandra A. (Grover) Kovacs of York.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Michael J. Kovacs and wife, Kristen, of Waterford, Conn., and Nicholas Kovacs of York; two sisters, Maureen A. Thibodeau of Lynn, Mass., and Barbara R. Kovacs of Saugus, Mass.; and his granddaughter, Jordan M. Kovacs of Waterford, Conn.

KOVACS - Frank E. Kovacs of Peter Weare Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 3, 2001, at York Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

William J. Gourley

LARGO, Fla. - William J. Gourley, 86, died Oct. 25, 2001, at Largo Medical Center.

Born in Dedham, Mass., he had lived in Florida more than 25 years, having moved from Portsmouth.

He had been employed as a truck driver and plant manager for ESSO/Exxon in Portsmouth for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Four Seasons Community Club. He was also a Mason.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Sullivan of Wrentham, Mass.; one son, W. Dennis Gourley and his wife, Elaine, of Hudson; two granddaughters, Cheryl Heald and Michele Chamberlain; two great-granddaughters, Jillian Heald and Mackenzie Chamberlain; and several nieces and nephews.

Theodore L. Fitzgerald

GREENLAND - Theodore L. Fitzgerald, 89, husband of Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald, of 480 Great Bay Road, died on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Greenland on May 17, 1912, a son of Samuel and Annie (Stobart) Fitzgerald and was educated in the Greenland school system.

During World War II, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was formerly employed as a truck driver for H&H Oil Company.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56, F&AM, of Portsmouth, for more than 50 years. He loved to garden.

Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Ruth R. Fitzgerald of Greenland and Nancy Fulford of Portsmouth; one son, Theodore R. Fitzgerald and his wife, Kay, of Greenland; two grandchildren, Dr. Linda Strout of Falmouth, Maine, and Howard T. White of New Orleans, La.; seven step-grandchildren, Susan Koury of Mansfield, Mass.; Jean Yurtseven of Rochester; John Fulford of Rockland, Mass., Robert Fulford of Rockland, Mass., Mark Fulford of Fayetteville, N.C., Sandra Papalardo of Virginia, and Kim Johnson of North Conway; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Samuel, Lester, Wallace, Howard and Wilfred.

FITZGERALD - Theodore L. Fitzgerald, 89, of 480 Great Bay Road, Greenland, died on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road, Greenland. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services at 5:45 p.m. by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56, F&AM. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Greenland Community Congregational Church.

Joseph W. Kane

YORK, Maine - Joseph W. Kane, 60, of 6 Yorke Ridge Way, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born on July 21, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of Joseph T.W. and Jean (Brown) Kane. He was a 1959 graduate of New London, Conn., High School and a 1963 graduate of the University of Connecticut, receiving a bachelor's degree in government.

He was a longtime employee of Curtis 1000 Company, serving the Maine territory. He later owned and operated Sebasco Paper and Envelope Company in Melrose, Mass., retiring in 1990.

He served on various town of York boards and was a past treasurer of the York Art Association and chairman of the York Republican Town Committee. He also served as a mentor in the York schools. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and contributed many hours to wildlife conservation. He was a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited.

He also had a residence in Cundy's Harbor in Harpswell, Maine, for the past 22 years and had formerly lived in Framingham, Mass., before moving to York in 1990.

He was predeceased by a brother, Leslie Kane, who died in 1998.

Survivors include his parents of Waterford, Conn.; his wife, Laurie Uff, of York; two sons, Michael David Kane and his wife, Michelle, of Gray, Maine, and James Joseph Kane and his wife, JoEllen, of Melbourne, Fla.; one daughter, Lee Ann German of Moodus, Conn.; and six grandchildren, Robert and Daniel German of Moodus, Conn., Matthew and Joshua Kane of Gray, Maine, and Zachary and Rachel Kane of Melbourne, Fla.

KANE - Joseph W. Kane, 60, of Yorke Ridge Way, in York, Maine, husband of Laurie Uff, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in York. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A prayer service will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Wednesday by the Rev. Paige Blair at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited, 1 Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120.

Helga C. Oian

YORK, Maine - Helga C. Oian, 86, formerly of Freeman Street, York Beach, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the Harbor Home.

She was born June 28, 1915, in Vardø, Norway, the daughter of Anders and Birgitte Mathiesen, and attended schools in Norway.

She had formerly lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., moving to York Beach in 1966. She had been employed at the University of New Hampshire dining halls for 16 years.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Newington, N.H., and was a member of the Sons of Norway. She was an avid skier and hiker and while in her late sixties spent two weeks hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Her husband, Morten Oian, died March 20, 1973.

Survivors include one son, Magne-Roar "Mike" Oian of Rye, N.H.; three daughters, Brit Dean of Chesterfield, N.H., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Kari Fernald of York Beach, and Tove Webber of Cape Neddick; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many family members in Norway.

OIAN - Helga C. Oian, formerly of Freeman Street, York Beach, Maine, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the Harbor Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Union Congregational Church of York Beach, Church Street, York Beach. Interment will be private. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Donna M. Reynolds

PORTSMOUTH - Donna M. (Zilch) Reynolds, 63, of 77 Marne Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Aug. 19, 1938, the daughter of Arthur and Mildred (Stauch) Zilch.

She was a dedicated, devoted and self-sacrificing mother and grandmother. Her faith in God sustained her throughout her life. Her strength, kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion touched the lives of everyone she knew or met. She was a renowned seamstress and would often donate many of her handmade items to various organizations, such as Birthright, with which she was actively involved.

She is survived by her husband, Jay S. Reynolds Jr., and her four children, Donna M. Edwards and her husband, Jayce, and their three children, Malia, Evan and Ben; Marianne P. Johnston and her husband, Ray, and their two children, Cody and Jennifer; Jennifer L. Edwards and her husband, Mike, and their son, Cameron; and Jay S. Reynolds III and his wife, Abby.

REYNOLDS - Donna M. (Zilch) Reynolds, 63, of 77 Marne Ave., Portsmouth, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Rye Bethany Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Flowers will be accepted. Donations in her memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 1309 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446-9918, or to Birthright, 323 Islington St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.
