Ferne E. Chadbourne

WESTBROOK, Maine - Ferne E. (Salsbury) Chadbourne, 93, of Westbrook, and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born March 19, 1908, in Canaan, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Leonal and Rowena (Stedman) Salsbury. She lived in Kittery most of her life, having moved there in 1942. She moved to Westbrook in 1997. Over the years, she worked at a variety of jobs. She was a telephone operator, and then a nurse's aid at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and then worked as a shoe inspector in the footwear manufacturing and repair field.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, embroidery and loved music. She enjoyed playing piano. She was active with her church, having been a long-time member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Kittery. She was a member of the church's Altrua Club.

On Feb. 28, 1927, she married Roland Chadbourne in Skowhegen, Maine. Her husband predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Chadbourne-Looser; three sisters, Theda Johnson, Elizabeth Holt and Marilyn Reddiker; and three brothers, Bernard Salsbury, Mylon Salsbury and Afton Salsbury.

She is survived by a son, the Rev. Mervin Chadbourne of Portland, Maine; a brother, Erlon E. Salsbury of Hopkinton, N.H.; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends, who keep her in their hearts and minds forever.

CHADBOURNE - Ferne E. (Salsbury) Chadbourne, 93, of Westbrook Maine, died Oct. 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church on Government Street in Kittery. A public visitation will take place at the church from 1 p.m. to the time of the funeral. Burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

William J. Gourley

LARGO, Fla. - William J. Gourley, 86, died Oct. 25, 2001, at Largo Medical Center.

Born in Dedham, Mass., he had lived in Florida more than 25 years, having moved from Portsmouth.

He had been employed as a truck driver and plant manager for ESSO/Exxon in Portsmouth for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Four Seasons Community Club. He was also a Mason.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Sullivan of Wrentham, Mass.; one son, W. Dennis Gourley and his wife, Elaine, of Hudson; two granddaughters, Cheryl Heald and Michele Chamberlain; two great-granddaughters, Jillian Heald and Mackenzie Chamberlain; and several nieces and nephews.

John F. McGrath

HAMPTON - John F. McGrath, 76, of 19 Dumas Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on July 4, 1925, the son of the late Thomas P. and Mary G. (Rice) McGrath. He had resided for most of his life in Fitchburg before moving to Hampton in 1986.

He worked as a fireman boiler tender for both the Leominster Hospital in Massachusetts and for the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in their power plants.

He was a World War II veteran, having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a communicant of Saint Theresa Church in Rye Beach.

Family members include his wife of 46 years, Ann E. (Paton) McGrath of Hampton; three sons, John F. McGrath III of Manchester, Thomas P. McGrath of Merrimack, and Justin R. McGrath of New Salem, Mass.; three daughters, Ann M. Vienneau of Hamilton, N.J., Kathleen M. Hayward of Fitchburg, Mass., and Patricia A. Trick of Avon, Conn.; eighteen grandchildren; a sister, Mary Loen of Lunenburg, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

McGRATH - John F. McGrath, 76, of 19 Dumas Ave., Hampton, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Constance W. Hankin

RYE - Constance W. "Connie" (Walsh) Hankin, 73, wife of Russell H. Hankin Jr., of 32 Dow Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 6, 1928, a daughter of the late William H.J. and Sarah (Burchill) Walsh.

She was a graduate of the former Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.

Prior to her retirement, she had been employed at the Immaculate Conception Parish as a secretary for 12 years. She had also worked at the former Flagstone's for 11 years.

She was a member of St. Theresa's Church in Rye Beach. She had volunteered for many years in the special education class at Little Harbour School. She was a parent member of the Education Council at Portsmouth High School and was one of the original members of the Community Development Commission in Portsmouth.

Besides her husband, Russell, of 55 years, survivors include her children, Gregory W. Hankin of Exeter, Cheryl Stockman of Somersworth, William R. Hankin of Eliot, Maine, Deborah J. Hankin of Epping, Sean F. Hankin of Colby, Kan., and Elizabeth Pacitti of Boca Raton, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Norma Semprini of Brentwood, Eileen Semprini of Madbury, Janette Miksch of Grass Valley, Calif., and Jackie Salvatore of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Nancy L. Hankin, predeceased her on Aug. 15, 1981.

HANKIN - Constance W. "Connie" (Walsh) Hankin, 73, of 32 Dow Lane, Rye, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Theresa's Church, Central Road, Rye. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rob Pacitti Scholarship Fund, c/o Russell Hankin Jr., 32 Dow Lane, Rye, NH 03870.

Robert B. Nicholson

PORTSMOUTH - Robert B. Nicholson, 78, of 928 South St., formerly of Deerfield Drive, Dover, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born in Winthrop, Mass., May 20, 1923, he was the son of Harry and Beatrice (Towle) Nicholson and had been a resident of the Seacoast for the past 36 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps.

He was the founder of the Rockingham Driving School and was also employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years, retiring in 1986.

A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Dorley) Nicholson; a daughter, Susan Petroulis and her husband, John, of Portsmouth; two sons, Paul Nicholson and his wife, Barbara, of Dover, and Peter Nicholson of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Kerri Nicholson, Nicole Winn and her husband, Andrew, Gregory Petroulis and his wife, Kari, Kevin Nicholson and William Nicholson; three sisters, Arlene Duff of Kentucky, Audrey Nicholson of Wilmington, Mass., and Betty Carter of Reading, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

NICHOLSON - Robert B. Nicholson, 78, of 928 South St., died Nov. 7, 2001. A funeral service will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Saturday at 9 a.m. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

C. Warren Barker Jr.

STRATHAM - C. Warren Barker Jr. 76, of 218 Portsmouth Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at his home in Stratham.

Born Dec. 28, 1924, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Carl Warren Barker Sr. and Florence Louise (Odell) Barker.

A lifelong resident of Stratham, he was a vegetable farmer and started Barker's Farm Stand in Stratham in 1965. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid bird watcher, hunter and fisherman. He was predeceased by his wife, Grace L. Barker, who died in 1993.

He is survived by three sons, Bruce W. Barker and his wife, Jan, Eugene A. Barker, and Gordon L. Barker and his wife, Edith, all of Stratham; and his granddaughter, Forrest G. Barker of Stratham.

BARKER - C. Warren Barker Jr., of Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, died Nov. 7, 2001. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032; or to the Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Doris M. Hanscom

LARGO, Fla. - Doris M. Hanscom, 71, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Largo Medical Center.

Born in Portsmouth, she moved to Largo in 1980. She was a homemaker, a devoted mother and a friend to all. Also, she was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Largo,

Survivors include two daughters, Roxane H. Aldhizer of Clearwater, Fla., and Jodie M. Hanscom of Dover, N.H.; two sons, Rick Hanscom of Plantsville, Conn., and Chris Hanscom of Seminole, Fla.; three brothers, George Boisvert and Alfred Boisvert of San Diego, Calif., and Robert Boisvert of Portsmouth, N.H.; three sisters, Rita Ellkewicz and Pearl Provost of Largo, Fla., and Mary Jane Cochrane of Oldsmar, Fla.; and one grandchild.

Barbara B. Cutler

NORTH HAMPTON - Barbara B. (Batcheller) Cutler, 83, formerly of Andover, Mass., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 16, 1918, in Andover, Mass., and retired from Raytheon in Andover.

An avid golfer and former member of Andover Country Club, she was a member of Wentworth by the Sea Country Club.

She is survived by one son, Gran Cutler of New Hampshire; one daughter, Sharon Hegarty of Andover; one sister, Jeanette Hogan of California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CUTLER - Barbara B. (Batcheller) Cutler, 83, of North Hampton, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 9, 2001, at West Parish Garden Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Donna M. Reynolds

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Donna M. (Zilch) Reynolds, 63, of 77 Marne Ave., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Thursday. Memorial services were held at the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. John Solie, senior pastor of Rye Congregational Church, Pastor Fred Cheney and Mrs. Reynolds' son-in-law Pastor Jayce Edwards, officiated.

Words of reflection were given by Lisa DeGuire. Guitarist was Pastor Edwards. In attendance were members of the Rye Congregational Church.

Clarence W. Palm

LEE - Funeral services for Clarence W. "Swede" Palm, 83, of 41 Belle Lane, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Wednesday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Tammy Martel.

In attendance were members of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Gum.

An honor guard was formed at the cemetery by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division (LI), 3-17 Calvary Squadron Fort Drum, N.Y., under the direction of OIC 2nd Lt. Gray Hassmann, including NCOIC Staff Sgt. Jerry Andrew, Sgt. Wendell Gooden, Sgt. Ramiro Castro, Spc. Joshua Yonnally, Spc. Robert Stallings, Pfc. Kelly Cobb, Pfc. Dustin Birge, Pfc. Juan Bonilla and Pvt. Phillip Martinez.

A volley was fired under the direction of Sgt. Gooden, including Sgt. Castro, Spc. Yonnally, Spc. Robert Stallings, Pfc. Cobb, Pfc. Birge, Pfc. Bonilla and Pvt. Martinez.

Taps was sounded and the American flag that draped the casket was folded under the direction of Staff Sgt. Andrew, including Sgt. Gooden, Sgt. Castro, Spc. Yonnally, Spc. Stallings, Pfc. Cobb, Pfc. Birge, Pfc. Bonilla and Pvt. Martinez. The flag was then presented to Mr. Palm's widow, Mrs. Helena (Fisher) Palm, by 2nd Lt. Hassmann.

Bearers were Lou Hoffmann, Mike Armstrong, John Lavery, Floyd Palm, Don Wilson Jr. and Tom "Butch" Smith.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Tuesday evening by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM, including worshipful master, Philip Fraser; senior warden, Craig I. Brown, PM; junior warden, John L. Whalen, PM; senior deacon, Brian R. Sanderson, PM; chaplain, Nelson D. Hersey, PM; secretary, Donald H. Ladd, PM; assistant secretary, Edward J. Conway, PM; marshal, Thomas G. LaBerge, PM; and Richard Staples.

James H. Colton

RAYMOND - James H. Colton, 67, of Raymond, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of the late James and Mary Colton of Sutton, Mass.

He graduated from South High School, Worcester, and received an associate's degree in tool engineering from Worcester Junior College and completed a five-year apprenticeship as a toolmaker at Whitin Machine Works, Worcester.

He was in the service during the Korean Conflict, traveled through Europe and later joined the Peace Corps. As a Peace Corps volunteer, he taught automotive mechanics in India. He learned to speak Hindi and grew to love the people and culture. Lately, with the growth of Indian restaurants in this area, one of his favorite activities was to go out to eat Indian and converse in Hindi with the Indian staff.

He realized a boyhood dream of working on the Green Mountain Railroad, then went on to become a plumber/mechanic at Phillips Exeter Academy where he was employed for the past 30 years. There he was known as the "bearded elf" who could fix just about anything, meeting all situations with patience, kindness and good humor.

He belonged to the Church of the Transfiguration of Derry (Episcopalian) for more than 20 years.

He was a Mason for 40 years, belonging to Quinsigamond Lodge of Worcester and Tucker Lodge of Raymond.

He leaves his wife of 30 years, Linda A. Colton; his daughter, Debra A. LeClair; son-in-law, William; and grandson, Michael; a sister, Grace Smith; and a nephew and several nieces.

COLTON - James H. Colton, of Raymond, died Nov. 1, 2001. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Phillips Church, Main Street, Exeter, on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. Donations in his name may be made to Habitat for Humanity.

Janet C Duffy

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Janet Cameron Duffy, 72, of Elm Street, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 10, 1929, she was the daughter of Malcolm and Janet (Jordan) Dill.

She was a graduate of Vassar College and obtained a master's degree from the University of New Hampshire.

She had been a staff writer-editor for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; a teacher of history at the Brearley School in New York City and at Exeter High School in Exeter, N.H.; a free-lance writer for the New York Times; director of public information for New Hampshire Public Television; and before her retirement, travel program manager at the University of New Hampshire.

She was an avid gardener, herbalist, potter and mountain climber. She loved all creatures and provided a home for many stray animals. She especially enjoyed watching and feeding wild birds at Pine-Apple Farm, her home in North Berwick.

Survivors include her two daughters, Anne Kimball and her two children Joshua and Jessie of Worcester, Vt., and Robin Jackson, her husband Roy and their two children Allison and Daniel of Tallahassee, Fla.; her two sons, David Duffy, his wife Maria, and their two children, Dominique and Alexander, of Kailua, Hawaii, and Jonathan Duffy and his wife Jamie of Newmarket on the Fergus, County Clare, Ireland; a sister, Elizabeth Hume of Seattle, Wash.; her best friend, Patricia Ames of North Berwick; nieces and nephew, grandnieces and nephews, and a circle of caring friends.

DUFFY - Janet Cameron Duffy, 72, of Elm Street, North Berwick, Maine, died Nov. 4, 2001, at York Hospital, York, Maine. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Dover Friends Meeting House in Dover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marlee Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906.
