Terry A. Gettelman

PORTSMOUTH - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Terry A. Gettelman, 66, of 350 Meadow Road, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on Sept. 19, 1935, a son of the late Milton M. Gettelman and Mildred (Crabbe) Gettelman Orr.

He received a bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, and a master's degree in business administration from New Hampshire College in Manchester.

He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He was commissioned in June 1957, served during Vietnam and retired from Pease Air Force Base in June 1986.

He was employed for 14 years as senior accountant for the city of Dover, retiring in October 2000.

A communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, he was very active in church affairs. He was a former member of the vestry and was a member of the church choir.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, the Seacoast Community Chorus and the York Singers.

Besides his wife, Helen (Goodwin) Gettelman, survivors include a son, Carl Gettelman of Portsmouth; a daughter, Gretchen Neubauer of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Matthew Ronco of San Antonio, Texas, and Erin Gettelman of Lee; a brother, Thomas W. Gettelman of Merritt Island, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Maralu Gettelman, and a brother, Kenneth Gettelman.

GETTELMAN - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Terry A. Gettelman, 66, of 350 Meadow Road, Portsmouth, died Nov. 18, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

COOK - Helen (Pruett) Cook, 83, of Meetinghouse Village, 143 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at York Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, from the Second Christian Congregational Church, on Government Street. Friends and family may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Kittery Lions Club, c/o Mrs. Donald Smith, Treasurer, 30 Philbrick Road, Kittery, ME 03904, or to the Rice Public Library. Ruth I. Brown

NEWMARKET - Ruth I. Brown, 84, of Neal Mill Road, died Nov. 19, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

Mrs. Brown was born on Jan. 16, 1917, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. She was the daughter of Morton J. and Ethel (Mullin) Reed.

She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Colby Junior College, and has resided in Newmarket since 1950.

She was a member of the Newmarket Community Church.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Dr. Irving E. Brown Jr. of Newmarket; a daughter, Virginia R. (Gigi) Brown of Newmarket; a son, Irving E. (Jack) Brown III and his wife Nancy of Newmarket, and their daughters, Jessica Bird and her husband Ronald and their daughter Kendall of Lee, and Angela Stafford and her husband Michael, and their children Connor and Heather of Portsmouth; a son, David S. Brown and his wife Tracy of Rye, and their children Reed Brown and Olivia Brown; two brothers, Carlyle Reed and Paul Reed, both of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

BROWN - Ruth I. Brown, 84, of Neal Mill Road, Newmarket, died Nov. 19, 2001. There are no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Family flowers only. Patricia A. Hayward

BATH, Maine - Patricia A. Hayward, 79, of Bath, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001.

Mrs. Hayward was born in Rockland, on Sept. 24, 1922, and graduated from Morse High School. She resided in Kittery while she was raising her family. She was predeceased by her husband Edmund C. Hayward in 1997. She moved to central Florida in 1988 and lived in Osteen, Fla., at the time of her death. She was a retired Home Health Aide, a member of the Bath Area Senior Citizen Club and a member of the Church of Christ.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Thelma Alexander of Sabasco Estates in Maine; two sons, Keith Hayward and his wife, Donna, of Berwick, Gary Hayward and his wife, Angela, of Kittery; two daughters, Sharyn Franz and her husband Gary of Osteen, Fla., and Lori Hall and her husband Dick, of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

HAYWARD - Patricia A. Hayward, 79, of Bath, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001. Interment will be at Maine Veteran's Cemetery Chapel, Augusta, Maine, on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the National Diabetes Society.

Carlton Wentworth

ROCHESTER, N.H. - A memorial service for Carlton Wentworth who died Nov. 14, 2001, in Rochester, was held Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road in Kittery, Maine. The Rev. Wayne Nelson, Pastor of the Rochester Church of God, conducted services. Family and friends spoke of Mr. Wentworth's life and shared memories. Two of Mr. Wentworth's favorite hymns, "Amazing Grace" and "Nearer My God To Thee" were played at the service.

The American Flag was presented to Mr. Roy's widow in honor of his faithful service to his country.

Virginia W. Teague

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - Virginia Winn Hewitt Teague, 89, died on Oct. 7, 2001 in Albuquerque.

She was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Boston, Mass. Ginny had a mischievous sense of humor to the end. She thoroughly enjoyed people, often diving well beneath the surface to form real connections. Friends and family were always welcome in her home and were treated to scrumptious meals prepared with loving hands. She found joy in travel, bridge, interior design, flower arranging, reading, and long walks on the beach and in the mountains. She never quit growing and learning and had a genuine zest for life. We send our love as you journey in God's lands.

Her parents were Leonard H. Hewitt and Agnes Winn Hewitt. They had five children, Thelma, Mildred, Grace (Bowden), Virginia, and Leonard Jr. She grew up in Portsmouth, N.H., on the Piscataqua River. After graduating as valedictorian of her class, she worked for Granite State Insurance. She married George Deming Parker (a dentist) in 1945. They had two children, Janet and Russell Newell. After moving to Monte Vista, Colorado in 1951, Virginia started her own insurance agency. Later, she and her family moved to Denver, Colorado. After her husband's death in 1965, she moved back to Portsmouth, N.H. In 1972, she married Dr. Louis C. Theobald in Exeter, N.H., where she did volunteer work at the Exeter Hospital. Upon Dr. Theobald's retirement in the early 1980's they moved to Jensen Beach, Fla. He died in 1983, following problems with Alzheimer's. As fate would have it, a few years later, Virginia married her high-school sweetheart at a ceremony in Fla. She and Julian (Teague) enjoyed traveling and summers in their second home in Boone, N.C. After Julian's death from cancer (Feb. 27, 1996), Ginny moved to Albuquerque to be near her daughter.

She is survived by her children and two grandchildren, Ian Christopher Parker and Elise Christine Parker of Fort Collins, Colorado. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and husbands.

Virginia's wish is for her remains to be mixed with those of her late husband Julian H. Teague, and to be interred together in the Hewitt family plot at the Harmony Grove Cemetery. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001.

TEAGUE - Virginia Winn Hewitt Teague, 89, of Albuquerque, N.M., and originally from Portsmouth, died Oct. 7, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth.

George W. Hinman Jr.

DURHAM - George Willard "Bill" Hinman Jr., 79, of 3 Emerson Road, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at his residence of causes related to heart disease.

Born Jan. 19, 1922, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of George W. and Rachel (Vaughan) Hinman.

He attended the Newton, Mass., public schools and graduated from Gettysburg College in 1947. He was a fraternity brother of Alpha Tau Omega.

As a resident of Marblehead, Mass., Bill was a member of Rotary, eight of those years as its director, a trustee of the Old North Church and chairman of its Christian Education Committee. He was a mason with the Philanthropic Lodge, president of Glover School PTA, and chairman for both the Citizens for Public Schools and Physical Education Committee, Marblehead YMCA.

Throughout his life Bill actively supported youth sports programs and was an avid fan of the Boston Bruins becoming a friend of the players as he followed their hockey careers. He was also an enthusiastic friend of football and men and women's hockey at the University of New Hampshire.

A veteran of World War II, he accomplished thirty-five missions over enemy territory as a bombardier on a B17 aircraft, 486 Bomb Group, U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in England.

Following his father's establishment of the Hinman Asbestos Corporation, Bill covered the New England area as an insulator of commercial buildings and, in his capacity, he was active with the National Insulation Contractors Association; he was on the Board of Eastern Insulation Contractors Association, and was past president of Boston Insulation Contractors. He retired from the business when research showed that asbestos was a health hazard and worked to improve safety factors concerned with insulation.

Bill is survived by his wife of five years, Ann B. Hinman of Durham; a son, Richard A. Hinman and his wife, Karen of Guilford, Conn.; two daughters, Carol Ramsey of Wilton, Conn., and Ann LaFortune and her husband Paul, of Durham; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Hinman of Randolph, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, Rachelle and Margaux LaFortune, Scott and Julie Ramsey, Sarah, James, Daniel, Michelle, Rachel, Danielle, Jessica, Alyssa and Peter Hinman.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 48 years, Virginia (Robertson) Hinman and their son, Peter George Hinman.

HINMAN - George Willard "Bill" Hinman Jr., 79, of 3 Emerson Road, Durham, N.H., died Nov. 18, 2001. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the Community Church of Durham. Donations may be made in his memory to the Bill Hinman Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o Athletic Department, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03826. Arrangements are under the direction of Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee and Oyster River Crematory, Barrington.

Patricia Titus

ELIOT, Maine - A largely attended visitation hour for Patricia Titus, who passed away Nov. 17, 2001, was held at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. A graveside committal services and burial followed in Brooks-Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, where the Rev. Gordon Allen recited committal prayers. Pallbearers were John Titus, Fred Mergendahl, Walt Shackford, Bruce Ross, D. Lawrence Ross and Dan Vorce. The large attendance was a true testimonial that Patricia lived a meaningful life and touched the hearts and lives of those she came in contact with. She has now gone home where she is watching over all of her beloved family and friends.

Phyllis H. Remick

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, for Phyllis Hammond Remick of Eliot, who died on Nov. 13, 2001, in Portsmouth, N.H.

The service was held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. An Eastern Star Service was offered by the Sara Orne Jewett Chapter OES of South Berwick with Worthy Matron Priscilla Derochemont leading. The Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiated at the Funeral Service, offering words of remembrance for Miss Remick's life. The service continued at Mr. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot where the Rev. Dr. Avery offered committal prayers. Services were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Sharon Couture

BARRINGTON, N.H. - Sharon Couture, 56, of 111 Hall Road, also known as Horse Feather's Farm, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at Holy Family Hospital, Methuen, Mass.

Born Feb. 16, 1945, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Hugh and Easter (Nolan) O'Brien.

She was employed as an industrial electronic repair technician with Wall Industries of Exeter.

Sharon loved animals, especially horses and, at one time, was a veterinarian technician.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis, of Barrington; two sons, William Peter Kapsimalis and his wife, Helene, of Barrington, and Darren Kapsimalis of Dover; two daughters, Denise Newport and her husband, Mark, of Barrington, and Susan Hall and her husband, James, of Hartford, Conn.; one brother Hugh O'Brien of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Maureen Cozad of Liberty, Mo., and ten grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Nov. 13, 2001, at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee, N.H.

Brenda D. Ramsay

HAMPTON - Brenda D. Ramsay, 54, of Boar's Head Terrace, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.

Born in Ludlow, Mass., she resided in New York City for several years before moving to New Hampshire two years ago. She received her undergraduate and Master of Business Administration degrees from Boston University. She was a CPA and vice president for the consulting firm of Kap-Gemini/Ernst & Young of New York City and was a member of the New Hampshire Society of CPAs.

She is survived by a sister, Maureen Ramsay, of New Hampshire, and an aunt, Charlotte Focosi of Ludlow, Mass.

RAMSAY - Brenda D. Ramsay, 54, of Hampton, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in St. Michael's Cemetery, St. Joan section, 1601 State St., Springfield, Mass. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Cardiovascular Research, c/o Dr. Peter Stone, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115. There are no calling hours. Patricia C. McNamara

RYE - The funeral for Patricia C. McNamara, 74, of 55 Big Rock Road, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Joseph McNamara, brother-in-law of Mrs. McNamara, the Rev. George Morgan, and the Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, were the celebrants. Marjorie Scully was organist, and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. The readings were offered by Raymond A. McNamara Jr., and words of remembrance were offered by Michael McNamara. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. McNamara.

Dorothy Roy

STRATHAM - A well-attended funeral for Dorothy Roy, who died Nov. 16, 2001, in Emporia, Va., was held Wednesday afternoon at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, conducted the service. Family members eulogized her, and a special poem was read by her daughter, Jeannine.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, with the Rev. Nadeau reciting committal prayers. Pallbearers were Shawn Roy, Michael Roy Jr., Jason Roy, Derek Hodgdon, Joseph Roy, Michael Roy and Arthur Bernstein. A celebration of her life continued at the Days Inn in Kittery, where family and friends shared memories.

Preston Reed Porter

PORTSMOUTH - Preston Reed Porter, infant son of Anthony L. and Iris E. (Duff) Porter of 5 Freedom Circle, died Nov. 19, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Christina C. Porter of Portsmouth; paternal grandparents Christina L. Bayliss of Portsmouth and Rudy J. Porter of Lake Charles, La.; maternal grandparents Richard and Doris Duff of Lake Charles, La.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

PORTER - Preston Reed Porter, infant son of Anthony L. and Iris E. Porter, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 19, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the South Cemetery in Portsmouth. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

James A. McIntyre

WATERVILLE VALLEY - James A. McIntyre, 74, formerly of Deerfield, died Nov. 19, 2001, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester after a lengthy battle with lung disease. Born in Norwood, Mass., on Oct. 10, 1927, he lived most of his life in Deerfield but recently moved to Waterville Valley. He graduated from LaSalle Academy in New York City in 1945 and was accepted as a Navy V-5 student attending Tufts College for two years of engineering studies prior to Navy flight training at NAS Pensacola, Fla. He subsequently flew with the Pacific Fleet and then returned to Columbia University to earn his degree.

Hired by Pan American World Airways in early 1952, he flew to Africa, South America and the Caribbean. He then joined TWA and flew U.S. domestic and international routes before retiring as a Boeing 747 captain in 1987. During this time he remained affiliated with the Naval Air Reserve and was called to active duty with the U.S. Navy in late 1961 for three years. He flew with the Fleet Tactical Support Squadron assigned to the Pacific Fleet and afterward rejoined the reserves. He retired as a Navy captain.

He was very active in air safety work throughout his career. Awarded the Air Line Pilot Association Air Safety award in 1985, he continued his air safety efforts in retirement. He was president of the U.S. Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI) and chaired the ISASI Human Factors Working Group.

In 1999 he was presented the prestigious Jerome P. Lederer Award in front of 130 delegates from 35 nations for his lifetime devotion to aviation.

He served as town moderator in Deerfield for 18 years and was the director of the Deerfield Fair Publicity Department for over a quarter of a century.

He was predeceased by his brother John.

Family members include his wife, Anna, of 48 years; a daughter, Mary Ames of Lebanon; three sons, James of Park City, Utah, Jeffrey of Grafton, and Christopher of Moultonboro; a brother, Harry of Reseda, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

McINTYRE - James A. McIntyre, 74, of Waterville Valley, formerly of Deerfield, died Nov. 19, 2001. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2001, at the Waterville Valley Conference Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Waterville Valley BBTS Ski Educational Foundation, Box 277, Waterville Valley, NH 03215. This endowment fund supports promising athletes in Olympic ski sports. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. Norman L. Hanson

PORTSMOUTH - Norman L. Hanson Sr., 90, of the Edgewood Centre, retired U.S. Army Veteran, died Nov. 21, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Millinocket, Maine, and had resided in Portsmouth for the past 48 years.

Mr. Hanson retired from the U.S. Army as a master sergeant in 1953 with over 23 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and received the ETO Ribbon with three Battle Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star.

He also was a former employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the former Pease Air Force Base. He was a member of the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 American Legion of Portsmouth.

Survivors include a daughter, K. Gloria Marsh of Concord; two sons, Norman L. Hanson Jr. and his wife Judith of Hernando, Fla., and Steven M. Hanson and his wife Linda of East Kingston; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.; a sister, Kathleen Hansen of Portsmouth; and a brother, Oscar Hansen of Berlin, N.H.

HANSON - Norman L. Hanson Sr., 90, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 21, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday morning at 11 a.m. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of New Hampshire, 20 Merrimack St., Suite No. 1, Manchester, NH 03101-2244.
