Jean P. Field

EXETER - Jean Pierce Field, one of the earliest residents of RiverWoods at Exeter, died peacefully at The Lodge at RiverWoods on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, following a long and difficult struggle with osteoporosis.

Born in Portland, Maine, on Jan. 2, 1917, she was one of three daughters of the late John Higgins Pierce and Mildred Archibald Pierce. She graduated from Waynflete Latin School in 1934, and Connecticut College for Women, with a degree in economics, in 1938.

Following graduation, she worked in the Office of the Dean at Dartmouth College and at the East Boston Airport (Logan) during its infancy, where she had an opportunity to meet and work with several of the early pioneers in aviation.

In June 1941, in Portland, Maine, she married Lt. j.g. Robert B. Field of Brockton, Mass., who was then serving on active duty with the U.S. Navy aboard the newly commissioned battleship USS North Carolina. While her husband was assigned to the Pacific Theater during World War II, she resided in San Francisco, where she gave birth to her first child and performed volunteer service with the Junior League of San Francisco and the American Red Cross.

In 1950, war again intervened in her life, and during the Korean Conflict, she and her family moved to Washington, D.C., while her husband served at the Office of Naval Research, which was then engaged in the development of the Polaris Missile Program.

At the end of the conflict she returned to Massachusetts and resided for several years in Brockton and Norwell, where she worked as an administrative assistant with the school department and town offices. She retired to South Yarmouth, Mass., traveled extensively internationally, and enjoyed playing golf, being with her grandchildren, and living on the Cape for several years prior to her move to RiverWoods in 1994.

Marjorie A. Pickering

NEWINGTON - Marjorie Alice Pickering, age 79, died in Newington on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001. Born in Newburyport, Mass. on April 18, 1922, she was the product of her generation.

Raised in Portsmouth's North End throughout the Great Depression, she developed a strong work ethic and lifelong love and respect for the Salvation Army. During World War II and the 1940s, she worked in the dietary kitchen at the Portsmouth Hospital where she met her lifelong friend, Arline Crown Rawson. Many times she said that these years were some of the happiest and most carefree of her life.

She loved rural Newington where her grandparents lived on Little Bay Road, and in her teens, she often walked the eight miles to their farm and then back to Portsmouth. Her mother could never understand her love of the country. "But what is it in Newington that you like?"

Marjorie knew great tragedy in her life, caring for her dying mother at age 18, losing her only sister and younger brother by her early 30s, and then the death of her husband, two of her sons and, as she grew older, many of her friends. She especially missed Margherita Mazeau and their hours and hours of telephone conversations.

Margie also knew great happiness. One being her love for Alfred Pickering, whom she wed Dec. 19, 1951. He was 24 years her senior, and a confirmed bachelor of 53 years of age who was living with his bachelor brother, Frederick, aged 51 years, in their old farmstead in Newington. Margie brought love and light to that old house. She loved the history, the men, her newborn son, Alfred Jr. (Judd), and the farm.

Chaos soon arrived with the birth of her triplets 15 months later, and her third son, Curtis, when she turned 40. The household grew to comprise five young children, two men and Mom. The barn held a dozen or so dairy cows and one bull that supported the self-sufficient livelihood that was shared by most Newington neighbors at the time.

The work never stopped, but the house and barn resonated with life and living. Margie loved growing things in her garden, then canning, making butter, cottage cheese and ice cream. Many a meal, she was proud that she had grown or made everything on the table except for the bread.

A great disappointment for her was that she was unable to go to college. Her intellectual salvation was to become the librarian at the Langdon Library in Newington for more than 25 years. She loved Newington's children and watching them grow. She also loved books and reading, and often read favorite poems to her children when they were young.

She loved to sing in an alto voice, her most favorite songs being the hymns that she remembered singing in harmony with three generations of older relatives at her grandparents' farm in Newington.

She helped start and became co-editor of the Newington Neighbor, writing about town news, history and politics for more than 28 years. No matter the subject, she staunchly believed in the First Amendment and the need to get news and information out to everyone to read and think about. And oh, did she hate Pease Air Force Base for making her deaf and then several times threatening to take her house away from her. She always told you exactly what she thought on that subject and all others.

For now, we will all miss her dearly. As long as she was with us, the world was right. With great sadness, it is now our turn to give her up.

Survivors include one son, Curtis Jon Pickering; two daughters, Judith Annette Poulin and Lulu Arline Pickering; five grandsons, Steven, Thomas and David Poulin, and Frederick and William (Jamie) Pickering; and two sons-in-law, William Gilbert and Michael Poulin, all of Newington; a granddaughter, Sarah Nielsen of York, Maine; a niece, Barbara Ann Haigh of Easton, Pa., and her children; and several wonderful Rawson cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred T. Pickering, who died in 1968 at the age of 69; her son, Alfred T. Pickering Jr., who died in 1972 at age 20; and Frederick Mathes Pickering, a triplet who died in 1984 at age 31.

The family gives many thanks and hugs to Linda Fallon for her kindness and help to all of us over the last few months.
