Simonne A. Lord

PORTSMOUTH - Simonne (Yergeau) Lord, 79, formerly of Ledgewood Commons in Raymond, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre. She was the wife of Alfred Lord, who died in 1972.

Born in Exeter, she was the daughter of Germain and Marie Louise Yergeau from Epping. She attended schools in Epping and Exeter, and she made her home in Sarasota, Fla., for more than 25 years before moving back to New Hampshire five years ago.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Epping, and she worked as a stitcher in Madbury Shoe in Rochester. While in Florida, she worked in the Sarasota Library System.

Survivors include one daughter, Yvonne Chainey, and her husband Frederick of Portsmouth; two granddaughters, Jennifer St. Germain of Cornwall, N.Y., and Patricia Wright of Stratham; three great-grandchildren, Danica St. Germain, Ellis Wright and Connor St. Germain; two sisters, Alice Bouchard of Deerfield and Theresa Hackett of Coolidge, Ariz; a sister-in-law, Theresa Yergeau of Epping; and a brother, Raymond Yergeau of Epping and Haines City, Fla. She was predeceased by her brothers Gerard Yergeau and Albert Yergeau.

LORD - Simonne (Yergeau) Lord, 79, formerly of Raymond, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre. Calling hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church on Route 27 in Epping. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Epping.

Cheryl A. Carey

CASCO, Maine - Cheryl Ann (Reddy) Carey, 52, died Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 2001, at a Portland hospital after a long and hard struggle with several illnesses.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Dec. 5, 1948, a daughter of James J. and Stasia Reddy, and was a 1967 graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery. She attended Fisher Junior College from 1968 to 1969.

She worked as a teacher assistant in special education at York High School from 1983 to 1993. She was a secretary-receptionist at Franklin Pierce College from 1993 to 1998 and was a secretary at Shaw Middle School in Gorham from 1998 to 1999.

She and her family were residents for 25 years of Sunrise Terrace in York. She and her husband fulfilled one of their lifelong dreams when they moved to Casco in 1998 to live at their home on Sebago Lake.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York and was a former volunteer for the church C.C.D. program.

She was a loving and caring wife and mother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Philip G. Carey of Casco; two sons, Scott J. Carey and his wife, Loretta, of Wells, and Steven M. Carey and his wife, Jennifer, of Saco; and her mother, Stasia Reddy, and sister, Paula Chase, both of Reading, Mass.

CAREY - Cheryl (Reddy) Carey of Casco, Maine, formerly of York, wife of Philip G. Carey, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in Portland. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will from 6:30 to 8:30 this evening at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Albert C. Edwards

SEABROOK - Albert C. Edwards, 67, of 67 Dows Lane, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.

He was born in Woburn, Mass., on Sept. 29, 1934, the son of the late Joseph and Veronica (Kelly) Edwards.

He worked as an auto body mechanic for many years and had resided in Seabrook since 1979, having moved from Portsmouth.

In his younger years he enjoyed car racing and continued as a race car enthusiast throughout his life.

A brother, Joseph Edwards, predeceased him.

He was the husband of Margaret F. (O'Brien) Edwards for 45 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include four sons, Albert C. Edwards Jr. of Exeter and John Edwards, Robert Edwards and William Edwards, all of Seabrook; three daughters, Donna Bogardus of Farmington, Vicki Ingram of South Berwick, Maine, and Carol Wilde of Newmarket; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Bowden of Milton and Minabell Bowden of Seabrook; and several nieces and nephews.

EDWARDS - Albert C. Edwards, 67, of 67 Dows Lane, Seabrook, died Nov. 30, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Rita M. Fernald

HAMPTON - Funeral services for Rita M. Fernald, 88, of 22 Tuck Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001. Graveside services were held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, Maine. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Jewell P. Shafmaster

HAMPTON - Jewell Philbrick Shafmaster, 93, a 50-year resident of Haverhill, Mass., died Sunday morning at the Partridge House in Hampton.

She was born in Haverhill on Oct. 29, 1908, daughter of the late Ernest P. and Addie F. (McGunnigle) McGrath.

She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Sanborn and graduated valedictorian from Lawrence High School, Class of 1925.

She was an active member of the Universalist Unitarian Church, Haverhill, where she was a 65-year communicant.

A voracious reader, she was also an avid and expert knitter of complicated sweaters and argyle socks.

She was very involved in the community, belonging to the Hale Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Haverhill Public library and B'nai B'rith, and serving as a Cub Scout leader and a longtime supporter of the Universalist Unitarian Church Christmas Fair.

A lifetime master bridge player, she was the longest-standing female member of the Haverhill Golf and Country Club, where she had been the only woman to score two holes-in-one. She golfed and bowled until her late 80s and skied until her late 70s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Shafmaster, who died in 1980, and her son Lt. Col. Ralph Moore, who died in 2001.

She is survived by another son, Jonathan Shafmaster of Durham; a daughter, Anne Burer of Yellow Springs, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Moore of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Edythe Young of Santa Barbara, Calif.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SHAFMASTER - Jewell Philbrick Shafmaster, 93, of Hampton, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service at 9 a.m. today at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 South Main St., Bradford, Mass. Burial will be in Children of Israel Cemetery, Haverhill, Mass. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140-1102, or to Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

Helen F. Scammon

RYE - Helen F. Scammon, 80, of 8 Sagamore Road, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at her home.

Born in Portsmouth July 12, 1921, she was a daughter of Patrick and Joanna (Sullivan) Regan and was a lifelong resident here. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1939 and of the Portsmouth Business School.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the former Ladd's Restaurant and the Internal Revenue Service. She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after many years.

She was a member of St. James Church and NARFE.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Scammon, who died in 1969.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra Senf, of Venice, Fla.; two granddaughters, Brittney and Lyndol Senf; two sisters, Dorothy Katlen of Rye and Catherine Walden of Portsmouth; one brother, Lawrence Regan, of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

SCAMMON - Helen F. Scammon, 80, of 8 Sagamore Road, Rye, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. James Church. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the Portsmouth VNA and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Ruth E. Kimball

AMESBURY, Mass. - Ruth E. (Stokes) Kimball, 77, also of Venice, Fla., died Nov. 25, 2001, at home in Florida.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., and graduated from Haverhill High School and McIntosh Business School. She, together with her late husband, Richard E. Kimball, founded R.E. Kimball & Co. Inc. in 1955. The business manufactures fine jams and jellies and will be carried on by her children and grandchildren. She retired in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gay K. Lakin and Bruce H. Lakin and grandsons Troy K. Lakin and Tyler H. Lakin, all of Kittery, Maine; her daughter and son-in-law Joy Kimball and Hans R. deBruin and twin granddaughters Katherine and Kimberly Gilbert, all of Merrimac, Mass.; her brother and his wife, Emery T. and Eleanor Stokes of Freedom, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; her beloved friend and companion, Raymond Croft of Brampton, Canada; and many friends and neighbors.

KIMBALL - Ruth E. (Stokes) Kimball, 77, of Amesbury, Mass. and Venice, Fla., died Nov. 25, 2001. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at The Union Congregational Church, 350 Main St., Amesbury. Interment will be private. A memorial service will also be held in Venice, Fla., and announced at a later date.

Shirley A. DeLong

AMESBURY, Mass. - Shirley A. DeLong, 55, of 8 Amidon Ave., died Sunday evening at the Anna Jaques Hospital with her family at her side.

Born in Dover, N.H., on Nov. 28, 1946, she was the daughter of the late John and Leotto (Whittier) Leonard. She was the wife of Robert "Bobby" DeLong.

She attended Newburyport schools and was a graduate of Newburyport High School in the Class of 1964. A longtime Amesbury resident, she and her husband, Bobby, owned and operated Amesbury Coach and DeLong's Auto Body on Elm Street in Amesbury.

She was very active in her community and was past president of the Amesbury All-Sports Booster Club and was an active volunteer with the Amesbury Lions Club, of which her husband was a member. She was an avid doll collector, specializing in rare and limited edition German dolls. She enjoyed traveling and spending summers at Alton Bay, N.H., and Aruba in winter. She was a generous person and gave to many charities. She was loved by many and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Stephen DeLong and his wife, Sheri-Lyn, of Salisbury, Mass., and Jeffrey DeLong of Amesbury; her mother-in-law, Marie P. DeLong of Amesbury; her sister-in-law, Beverly DeLong; and many nieces and nephews.

DeLONG - Shirley A. DeLong, 55, of Amesbury, Mass., died Dec. 2, 2001. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Holy Family Parish's St. Joseph Church on School Street in Amesbury. Burial will follow in the Mt. Prospect Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the 3-West Nurses' Station, c/o Catherine McDonald, Anna Jaques Hospital, 25 Highland Ave., Newburyport, MA 01950, or to the Amesbury Lions Club, P.O. Box 466, Amesbury, MA 01913.

Mary E. Sims

RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. - Mary Elizabeth Kinch Sims, 77, of 137 Cedar Lane, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at her home.

A native of Rockingham County, N.H., she was born July 9, 1924, daughter of the late Lawrence and Myra (Truman) Kinch.

She worked as a presser with the Tanner Corporation.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Thomas Sims of Rutherfordton; a daughter, Judith Arrowood of Ellenboro, N.C.; two sons, Robert Sims of Charlotte, N.C., and Arthur Sims Jr., of Rutherfordton; a brother, Ralph W. Kinch of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SIMS - Mary Elizabeth Kinch Sims, 77, of Rutherfordton, N.C., died on Dec. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2001, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 563 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Rutherfordton, with the Rev. William Swink officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at the church. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. The family requests no flowers please.

Mary F. Stevens

NORTH HAMPTON - Mary Fae Stevens, 68, of 27 Woodknoll Drive, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 4, 2001, at her home after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Auburn, N.Y., Oct. 4, 1933, the daughter of the late Carlton F. and Agnes G. (Butler) Bauer.

Raised in North Wolcott, N.Y., she was a graduate of Red Creek Central School, Red Creek, N.Y., with the Class of 1951.

She resided here since 1972, coming from East Penfield, N.Y. She worked as a home health aide, giving her clients loving care for 18 years at Area HomeCare & Family Services of Portsmouth and also as a physician's assistant at the North Hampton Family Practice for eight years.

She was an active member of the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth where she enjoyed singing and sharing her marvelous gift of hospitality. She also served in various roles for the children's Sunday school program including music and teaching. Many, many people will miss her loving cards and notes.

She was the loving wife of Norman A. Stevens for 49 years.

In addition to her devoted husband, family members include one son, Gary Stevens of Bloomington, Ill.; four daughters, Joan Croston of North Hampton, Susan Amnott of Pensacola, Fla., Kristin Stevens of North Hampton, and Julie Broderick of Dalton, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Carlton C. Bauer and John R. Bauer, both of Wolcott, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who was loved by all and devoted her life to nurturing her family and flower gardens.

STEVENS - Mary Fae Stevens, 68, of 27 Woodknoll Drive, North Hampton, died Dec. 4, 2001. Services will be held at the Advent Christian Church, Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Advent Christian Church, 634 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or Area HomeCare & Family Services, 1320 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Stephen A. Geraci

PORTSMOUTH - Stephen A. Geraci, 51, of 20 Islington St., died suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth Sept. 15, 1950, he was the son of Lennie (Silver) Geraci and the late Salvatore Geraci.

He was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in the Class of 1968, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the marching band. He also attended the University of New Hampshire.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Jessica Lynn Geraci; one sister, Sharon Geraci of Kittery, Maine; one niece, Alicia Webber of Portsmouth; two great-nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

GERACI - Stephen A. Geraci, 51, of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 29, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on Austin Street. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home.

Ralph Ells

YORK, Maine - Ralph "Bud" Ells, 85, died Dec. 4, 2001, at Harbor Home in York after a long illness.

He was born in Everett, Mass., to Harry and Janie (Lock) Ells and was a graduate of Everett High School. He served as a gunner's mate 1st class in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked as a color maker for Touraine Paints for more than 40 years. He had resided in West Peabody, Mass., before moving to York in 1983.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church.

For 60 years he was the devoted husband of Flora (Marin) Ells.

He was the beloved father of Thomas Ells and his wife, Jeanne, of Salisbury, Mass.; Alona Saladino and her husband, Frank, of Palm Bay, Fla.; Diane Ells and her fiancée, Thomas Melba, of Delray Beach, Fla.; and Thomas Ells and his wife, Pamela, of York. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Laurie Bishop, Sheri Blakeney, Lisa Ells, William Singersen and Christy Sheppard; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Bishop and Kendyl Blakeney; a sister, Janie Sletterink of Manomet, Mass.; and a brother, Elliott Ells of Manhattan Beach, Calif.

ELLS - Ralph Ells, 85, of Beechwood Avenue, husband of Flora (Marin) Ells, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160, Portland, ME 04101-2406.
