Norma I. Chisholm

NORTH HAMPTON - Norma Irene Chisholm, 86, formerly of Atlantic Avenue, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at the McCoy Home for the Elderly in Newport.

She was born in Claremont, Feb. 16, 1915, the daughter of Orson P. and Sadie (Lombard) Nichols. She resided in North Hampton for 45 years, moving to Claremont in 1999. She was 1932 graduate of Charlestown High School where she was the class salutatorian. She graduated in 1938 from Keene Normal School with her degree as an elementary school teacher. She taught school in Claremont, Westmoreland and Littleton. And after her marriage in 1954 she taught in North Hampton, Hampton Falls, Exeter and Stratham.

She was a 60-year member of the Grange, involved in local, state and national levels. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was the wife of the late James Alan Chisholm, who died in 1983.

Survivors include three sisters, Lillian French of South Acworth, Marion Forest of Liberty, N.Y., and Thelma Ferland of Claremont; one brother, Herbert Nichols of Claremont; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Vera LeClair, Doris Nichols and Nathalie Nichols; and one brother, Everett Nichols.

CHISHOLM - Norma Irene Chisholm, 86, formerly of Atlantic Avenue, North Hampton died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001. Services will be held at the North Hampton United Church of Christ on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Local arrangements are by Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton.

HANLON - Harry "Hardluck" Hanlon, 86, of Rye, died Dec. 6, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours are today (Sunday) from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

GOURLEY - William J. Gourley, of Florida, formerly of Dedham, Mass., and Portsmouth, N.H., died on Oct. 25, 2001. Beloved husband of the late Pauline (Billings); dear father of W. Dennis and his wife Elaine Gourley of Hudson, N.H.; brother of Dorothy Sullivan of Wrentham, Mass.; grandfather of Cheryl Heald and Michele Chamberlain; great-grandfather of Jillian Heald and MacKenzie Chamberlain. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 would be appreciated.

Alice J. Maynard

ELIOT, Maine - Alice J. Maynard, 79, of 91 Main St., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Portsmouth (N.H.) Regional Hospital.

Born June 21, 1922, in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of William and Alice (Pickup) Love and attended local schools.

She was married to Daniel Maynard and traveled to a number of military assignments with the U.S. Marine Corps before settling in Eliot in 1959 and raising their family.

She was an active member of St. Raphael Parish in Kittery and enjoyed her time at Edgewood Manor in Portsmouth, N.H., where she was an executive housekeeper.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, Daniel Maynard of Eliot, survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Maynard of Oakland, Calif.; a son, Daniel W. Maynard of Hanover, Pa.; a sister, Eileen Crowley of Pawtucket, R.I.; and four grandchildren, Kelly, Jocelyn, Jessica and Dennis.

She was predeceased by her son, Dennis Maynard.

MAYNARD - Alice J. Maynard, 79, of Eliot, Maine, died Dec. 8, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. today (Monday) from her church, St. Raphael Parish on Whipple Road, Kittery, Maine. Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. to noon today before the service, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04332-0346. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Ensley Joseph Tibbetts

NEWINGTON - Ensley Joseph Tibbetts, 73, of 19 Coleman Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Chester, Maine, on Sept. 18, 1928, and attended public schools there.

He was a member of the Newington Congregational Church and had served in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a shipfitter; he had also been employed as a truck mechanic for Hood's and had formerly owned the Exxon station in Newington.

He was a member and past Master of St. John's Lodge #1 F&AM in Portsmouth and also a member of Washington Royal Arch Chapter #3; Davenport Council #5; DeWitt Clinton Commandery, KT; the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dover; and the Bektash Shrine of Concord.

He is survived by two nieces, Terri Lynn Lyon and her husband, Richard E., of Newington, and Linda L. McMillen and her husband, Rex D., of Portsmouth; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

TIBBETTS - Ensley Joseph Tibbetts, 73, of 19 Coleman Drive, Newington, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. Graveside Masonic services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday by St. John's Lodge #1 F&AM at the Newington Cemetery, Newington. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Donations in his memory may be made to St. John's Operation & Maintenance Fund, 351 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Lillian M. Wilcott

MANCHESTER - Lillian M. (Montminy) Wilcott, 80, died Dec. 6, 2001, at the Elliott Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Suncook on March 22, 1921, she was a daughter of Ovila and Anna (Grandmont) Montminy. She was a lifelong resident of the Manchester and Suncook area.

She was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. In addition, she was a member of the Alpine Club.

Family members include her husband, Robert J. Wilcott Sr. of Manchester; four sons, Robert J. Wilcott Jr., Roger Wilcott, Wilfred Wilcott and Richard Wilcott, all of Manchester; a daughter, Patricia Gayotte of Portsmouth; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilfred Montminy, Normand Montminy and George Montminy, all of Manchester; three sisters, Gertrude Smith of New Mexico, Florence Dube of California and Constance Gagnon of Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

WILCOTT - Lillian M. (Montminy) Wilcott, 80, of Manchester, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., at the corner of North Street, Manchester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Anthony Church. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Hooksett. Johanna Sefcik

YORK, Maine - Johanna Sefcik, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at York Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Johanna Kurajda on the Feast of the Assumption, Aug. 15, 1914, in the present-day Slovak Republic.

She married the now deceased Andrew Sefcik in 1933 and resided in New Jersey before moving to York.

Before her last illness she led an active outdoor life and loved her gardening.

She was predeceased by her daughter Sylvia, who died in 1999.

She is survived by her other daughter, Rosalie, of York.

SEFCIK - Johanna Sefcik, of York, Maine, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at York Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Tuesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, N.H. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Doctors Without Borders USA, 6 East 39th St., Eighth floor, New York, NY 10016. Sarah H. Reed

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Sarah Hafford Reed, 24, of 306 Bauneg Beg Hill Road, died at her home on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Nov. 21, 1977, a daughter of Mark and Shirley (Richard) Hafford, she had lived in Portsmouth before moving to North Berwick.

She was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School with the Class of 1996 and was a student at McIntosh College, where she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

In addition to her parents, of North Berwick, she is survived by her husband, Brian F. Reed, and her daughter, Gwenevere Anastazie Reed, both of North Berwick; her paternal grandparents, Wilfred and Germaine Hafford of Hampden, Maine; her maternal grandfather, Nazaire P. Richard of Hampden, Maine; maternal great-grandmother Rose Lagase of Levi, Quebec; and one sister, Danielle Rene Hafford of North Berwick.

REED - Sarah Hafford Reed, 24, of North Berwick, Maine, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Family Church in Sanford, Maine. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Hampden, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an education fund for the benefit of her daughter, Gwenevere, in care of Mark Hafford, 306 Bauneg Beg Hill Road, North Berwick, ME 03906.

Susan L. Crosby

ROLLINSFORD - Susan Lee Nichols Crosby, 63, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the New England Medical Center in Boston after a lengthy and courageous battle with leukemia.

She was born May 6, 1938, in Newton, Mass., to loving parents, Richard and the late Mary (Wakefield) Nichols. She grew up in Georgetown, Mass., graduating as salutatorian of the Class of 1956 from Perley High School. She was a natural athlete, playing four years of softball and five years (8th grade included) of basketball. She was co-captain of the basketball team and league free-throw champ for two years. She was instrumental in two league titles for Perley, even being offered a women's pro basketball touring job.

She received a baccalaureate degree in music from UMass-Amherst in 1960. While studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, she became enamored with foreign travel, ultimately visiting more than 50 countries.

In 1977, she and her family moved to Durham. In addition to being a single mother, she was well known in the Seacoast area as a singer, musician, swimming/basketball mom and volunteer with various organizations.

She was predeceased by her eldest daughter, Elise Martin Crosby, who died in 1996, and by her mother, Mary (Wakefield) Nichols, who died in 1989.

She is survived by her father, Richard Nichols; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Allan (Pete) Perry; son and daughter-in-law Alex and Corinne Crosby; son Ben (Rick) Crosby; daughter and son-in-law Joanna Crosby and Stanley Pilgrim; daughter and her fiancée Dawn Crosby and Rodrigo (Jo-Jo) Maqueda Monges; grandchildren Shane and Will Crosby, Ngeende Pilgrim and three additional grandchildren soon to arrive.

A humble and selfless person, her strength, beauty and eternal optimism were experienced by all who came to know her. She will be missed dearly by those who were lucky enough to have shared any part of life with her.

CROSBY - Susan Lee Nichols Crosby, 63, of Rollinsford, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Church, 404 High St., Somersworth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Massachusetts Chapter, 495 Old Connecticut Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701-4567.

Judith A. Yudkin

YORK, Maine - Judith Ann (Sussman) Yudkin, 63, widow of Howard L. Yudkin, of 7 Ruch Lane, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the York Hospital.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on May 30, 1938, a daughter of the late Leo and Ruth (Goodman) Sussman.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1955; she did her undergraduate work at Boston University and her graduate work at George Washington University.

She is survived by two daughters, Laurie Yudkin of Newmarket, N.H., and Debra Yudkin of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a sister, Nancy Alexander of Portsmouth.

YUDKIN - Judith Ann (Sussman) Yudkin, 63, of 7 Ruch Lane, York, Maine, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Temple Israel, State Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Mary F. Stevens

NORTH HAMPTON - Well attended funeral services for Mary Fae Stevens, 68, of 27 Woodknoll Drive, who died Dec. 4, 2001, were held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted in the Advent Christian Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. Russell Carle, pastor, officiated. Priscilla Marshall was organist. Special music was provided by Gary Stevens and Kristin Stevens for their mother. Special words were read by the Rev. Carle, titled "Those Hands," which was written by Kristin Stevens. Words of remembrance were offered by several of those in attendance. Burial followed in the Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Carle. Pallbearers were Joel Amnott, Jason Amnott, Frank Amnott, Peter Stevens, Jacob Stevens, Dylan Croston, Nathan Stevens and Benjamin Stevens, all grandchildren of Mrs. Stevens.

Winnifred P. Wyndham

ROCHESTER - Winnifred P. Wyndham, 84, of 7 South Blueberry Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 5, 1917, in Lisbon Falls, Maine, a daughter of the late Carl and Mathilda (Stein) Goddard.

She was a graduate of Lisbon High School. She was a 1999 charter member of the World War II Memorial Program.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Wyndham, in 1994; two sons, Charles A. Wyndham and Jon Wyndham; two brothers, Norton Goddard and Keith Goddard; and her sister, Lois Glasford.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jeana Wyndham of Eliot, Maine, and Carlene Wyndham of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Lynda Clayton of Portland, Maine, David Wyndham of Brewster, Mass., and Lorri Wyndham of Texas; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

WYNDHAM - Winnifred P. Wyndham, 84, of Rochester, died Dec. 9, 2001. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the World War II Memorial, P.O. Box 96766, Washington, DC 20090-6766.

Norma R. Pirisi

STUART, Fla. - Norma R. (Beauregard) Pirisi, 64, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at her home.

Born in Burlington, Vt., she resided in Portsmouth, N.H., for 30 years.

She worked at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Alfonso Pirisi of Stuart; four daughters, Regina Fredericks and husband Bob, Pamela Orr and husband Bill, Tina Atley and husband Scott, and Monica Barker and husband Nick; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Joan Howe, Loretta Goodreau, Lillian Duchanine, and Lucille O'Neil; and two brothers, John Beauregard and Robert Beauregard and their families.

PIRISI - Norma R. Pirisi, 64, of Stuart, Fla., died Nov. 19, 2001. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and burial was in Fernhill Memorial Gardens of Stuart. Those who wish may contribute to Hospice of Martin and St. Lucie, P.O. Box 1168, Stuart, FL 34995.

Gladys I. Sadler

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Gladys I. Sadler, 85, formerly of North Hampton, N.H., died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after a period of failing health.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Feb. 4, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles D. and Freda (Godfrey) Flanagan.

She had resided in Portsmouth until moving to Hampton in 1938 and to North Hampton in 1940. For the past year, she had resided with her daughter in Florida.

She was the widow of Edward P. Sadler, who died in 1975. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Malissa Greeley, formerly of Kingston, N.H.

Family members include two sons, Edward P. Sadler Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Donald C. Sadler and his wife, Antoinette, of Davenport, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia G. Sadler, of Jensen Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

SADLER - Gladys I. Sadler, 85, of Jensen Beach, Fla., formerly of North Hampton, died Dec. 4, 2001. Services will be held at the Center Cemetery, North Hampton, at 10 a.m. today. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home–Crematory Hampton.

Margaret E. Brown

NORTH HAMPTON - Margaret E. Brown, 88, of 34 Maple Road, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare.

She was born in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, on Jan. 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Roy C. and Hattie J. (Naves) Nesbitt.

Moving to Exeter as a child, she attended the Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter before moving to North Hampton in the early 1930s. A homemaker, she was very active with the North Hampton Women's Club and the Ladies Union of the United Church of Christ of North Hampton. She was a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church in Hampton for many years. She also volunteered at the North Hampton School Library and the Nearly New Shop at Trinity Episcopal Church for many years.

She was the wife of Hayden M. Brown, who died in 1970.

Family members include two daughters, Beverley Frenette and her husband, George, of North Hampton, and Pauline Waters and her husband, Richard, of Hampton; four grandchildren, Garrick and Timothy Waters, both of Wilmington, N.C., G. Michael Frenette of Exeter and Donna Souther of Rochester; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Dining of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Todd N. Carter, Viva N. Brown and Evelyn N. Callahan.

BROWN - Margaret E. Brown, 88, of North Hampton, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High St., Hampton, NH 03842. Private burial will be in the Little River Cemetery, North Hampton. Assistance with arrangements is by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
